Send us a textFinding your dream job isn't always a straight path – just ask Dr. Kristen Brown. What began as volunteering to be an "embedded actor" in simulation scenarios designed for medical residents transformed into a career-defining passion that now shapes healthcare education at Johns Hopkins and beyond.Dr. Brown takes us behind the scenes as Associate Dean for Simulation and Immersive Learning at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, where she's pioneered simulation education across all advanced practice nursing programs. Her innovative approach has expanded simulation capacity through virtual reality, adding thousands of additional training hours while maintaining the pedagogical integrity that makes simulation effective. From standardizing simulation curricula to leveraging cutting-edge technology, Dr. Brown reveals how simulation has evolved from a supplementary teaching tool to an essential component of clinical preparation. The power of simulation comes to life through Dr. Brown's personal experience responding to a roadside emergency. Drawing on skills practiced countless times in simulation scenarios, she instinctively managed a critical airway situation despite being outside her specialty area. This real-world application perfectly illustrates why simulation matters – it creates lasting behavioral changes that translate directly to improved patient outcomes. As Dr. Brown emphasizes, regardless of technological advancements, effective simulation must drive behavior change through meaningful engagement and evidence-based practices.Dr. Brown's work extends beyond Hopkins through her leadership roles with the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, where she serves on the Board of Directors and multiple committees. Her recent policy initiative brought together presidents of major simulation organizations, healthcare education leaders, and policy experts to develop a consensus statement that will shape simulation's role in addressing workforce development challenges. Join us for this fascinating conversation about how simulation is revolutionizing healthcare education and why staying true to its foundational principles ensures it remains transformative for learners and patients alike.Innovative SimSolutions.Your turnkey solution provider for medical simulation programs, sim centers & faculty design.

Accusations, reasons, excuses & subjunctive II with hätte. At the party, Fritz hid the book under his sweater and took it away. That actually saved it from falling off the balcony, he says. When Paul upset everybody there was no chance to give it back secretly. And the option to admit that he was the one who had the book without losing his face was gone, too. So he handed the book over to the caretaker who's doing the lost-and-found for Paul's apartment building. But that was already 3 weeks ago. That's why he's so shocked that Paul doesn't have it back yet. Fritz thought Paul would surely assume that it had fallen down and ask the caretaker if someone found it. And he thought that the caretaker probably told him it was Fritz who gave him the book. That - and the fact that he is together with Paul's ex-girlfriend - is the reason why he isn't surprised that Paul is angry at him. He shows him his phone and SIM card: They're burnt. It looks like Fritz's electronics really got wet in a rain. And in Berlin, Fritz was apparently on the phone all the time because he bragged to his new girlfriend about "his" new holiday home - which actually belongs to his uncle. Paul calls Anna. She goes to the caretaker and gets the book. He is very happy, but the glued-in page with the important info is missing. Without it, Grandpa won't be able to find the new address of the hiding place of the painting. Fritz says he doesn't have it, and stays in denial till the end: "I didn't do anything wrong." The book is back, but what will Grandpa say about the missing page and the important info being lost? D and D can help with environmental education by creating immersive, story-driven learning experiences that engage students on a deeper level. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Andrew Thaler, who's using Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) to teach environmental concepts in a way that feels more like play than a lesson. Through world-building, role-playing, and strategic storytelling, students aren't just learning—they're adventuring through ecosystems, facing climate-related challenges, and discovering how natural systems work in real time. Environmental education is often limited to textbooks and lectures, but D&D turns abstract concepts into living, breathing quests. Whether it's battling pollution monsters or restoring magical coral reefs, players develop a better understanding of ecological relationships and environmental issues while having fun. If you're a teacher, game master, or environmental advocate, this episode will show you how fantasy and education can combine to create a lasting impact in and out of the classroom. Christian opens with a prayer, setting a reflective tone before he and Deb share their backgrounds, highlighting their diverse work in church leadership, nonprofits, digital marketing, and coaching. Their firsthand experiences with high demands make them well-equipped to discuss burnout from multiple angles. They identify three key burnout triggers: stress, circumstances, and resources—with stress coming from external pressures, circumstances being life's misalignments, and resources reflecting a lack of support or tools to manage challenges. Rather than just treating symptoms, Christian emphasizes the need to address burnout at its root for lasting change. A core takeaway is the “Win the Day” practice—starting the day with structured routines including physical activity, contemplation (prayer, scripture, journaling), and learning. This approach shifts the mind from anxiety to creativity and productivity, helping prevent burnout. Deb shares her own strategies for maintaining balance, distinguishing between self-care and soul care. She advocates for intentional daily rhythms, such as walking with God, weekly sync times with her spouse, and observing a weekly Sabbath. Setting boundaries is also key—she and Christian are intentional about protecting their Sabbath by saying no to extra commitments. The discussion moves to goal-setting and clarity as antidotes to feeling stuck, a common side effect of burnout. Christian explains that having a clear direction reduces stress and that immersive learning—actively filling gaps in knowledge and skills—helps maintain forward momentum. Christian also challenges the idea that burnout stems from a lack of resources, arguing that more often, it's about not leveraging existing resources effectively. He suggests that when used wisely, resources tend to multiply. Closing with a Scriptural perspective, Christian references Romans 12:2, emphasizing the power of a renewed mind in transforming one's life. The episode reinforces the idea that while stress is unavoidable, burnout is preventable through intentional routines, clear goals, and a mindful approach to spiritual and personal well-being. This conversation blends practical strategies with personal stories and faith-based insights, offering listeners a roadmap to resilience, balance, and empowered leadership.

And he has a red BMW - there are certainly not many cars like this on the island. Then Laura writes Paul. Her Oktoberfest police operation is now over and she is free. She wants to know if Paul has time. Paul doesn't know what to do: He has no time, but he can't tell her why he has no time because that would shurely make her angry.

He's always seeking new ways that technology can engage people to absorb learning and become more engaged—not just a boring, traditional training program, but something that would really involve learners in a more immersive way, sparking their curiosity and excitement.Andrew and his team successfully prototyped a solution in which learners get an immersive learning experience through a headset and talk to a coach avatar who can teach just about anything. So, if you're interested in finance, investing, sales, leadership, career preparation, and just about any topic matter, you'll find it on the app. This includes job-related skills, general management and leadership courses, and personal development topics. You can obtain information at your fingertips through generative AI and large language models. What sets the application apart is the combination of artificial intelligence and a VR experience. Through simulations, role plays, or evaluation, learners can master any particular topic or get support in any particular challenge. Unlike mobile device applications, VR experiences significantly reduce distractions, leading to more focused and practical engagement. The solution is also unique because it is curated and configured to the expert level. You teach the avatar, and the avatar then teaches others. It ingests your content to become a master in your subject and attain the same level of intelligence as you.Learners who use the solution talk to someone as if they're talking to you in an interactive, dynamic environment. If something is unclear or learners want to probe further or even get additional guidance or resources, the solution will facilitate that. Learners get videos and information transcripts and don't have to take notes.Andrew's solution is a smart choice for mid-to-large-sized corporations or even smaller corporations that can't afford expensive training or trainers. We are delighted to have the great Koreen Pagano join the podcast for the furthering conversation on skills. We get Koreen's perspective and definition of skills.  Matt alludes to the earlier LDA Podcast, The “What the Skills” Episode with Paul Kirschner, as well as the research work he did with John Sweller and Richard Clark published in their article: Kirschner, P.A., Sweller, J., & Clark, R.E. (2006). Why minimal guidance during instruction does not work: An analysis of the failure of constructivist discovery, problem-based, experiential, and inquiry-based teaching. Educational Psychologist. 41(2), 75-86. In the episode, we dig into whether one can teach, and how one can teach, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and even tease the subject of teaching leadership. The debate really gets playfully heated when they talk about critical thinking. Clark uses the famous phrase, “yes… and…” Matt references the great improv in business practitioner, Kat Koppett. Her first book, Training to Imagine is a great source to go into yes, anding… in more depth. Matt references evolutionary skills and brings up the references from Sweller: Sweller, J. (2016). We also explore how to assess whether a person has a skill or the potential to develop a skill. We debate transferability and whether skills— especially complex skills need be taught within a contextual domain. Matt argues yes. Koreen argues no. Clark argues “It depends.” They also debate whether, and how much, talent plays into skill development. Heck… is talent even a thing? The big argument centers around Carnegie Hall and playing golf! And of course, Anders Ericsson is a part of the conversation. Ericsson, K. A., & Charness, N. (1994). Expert performance: Its structure and acquisition. American Psychologist, 49: 725–747. Matt referenced the Human Development expert, Richard Lerner. Koreen references the hostage negotiator, Chris Voss and his book, Never Split the Difference. And we even debate how transferrable the skill of game design is! And we talked about so much more!!! Of course, we run out of time because we had so much fun chatting with Koreen… that we didn't get to Best and Worst! Next time… and Koreen will be back!
