DISCLAIMER: This episode contains graphic depictions of harm done to animals. While no animals were harmed in the making of this podcast and of this miniseries, there are some graphic descriptions. These descriptions are based on real-life testimony from the people who served as liquidators in Chernobyl exclusion zone. We venture further into the clean-up effort inside the "exclusion zone" as the top ranking officials make tough decisions on how to clean up very radioactive material. We also follow along with a few "liquidators". Even though this story is mostly fictional, these men and women who served inside the "exclusion zone" risked potential health factors to prevent any further catastrophe. Walt Disney was riding high in the late 30's. He had just released the first ever feature length animated film and had built a new state-of-the-art animation studio. Now, he was tasked with capturing lightning in a bottle again. He decided on another fairy-tale, about the wooden puppet who wanted to be a real boy. This story, along with groundbreaking animation that had never been done before resulted in the 1940 timeless classic, Pinocchio. Have a movie recommendation?DM me on Instagram or Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcastEmail me: themoviecommentarypodcast@yahoo.comIn the history of cinema, there are certain films that come along that seemingly define their genre. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for spaghetti westerns, Ben-Hur for the epics, The Shining for horror films, and so many more, but no film defined its genre better than the 1968 Science-Fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The making of 2001 is almost as interesting as the movie itself. In 1964, legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick met best-selling science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke. Together, they started working on a story that was based on a previous short story that Clarke himself had written. In a very unique development process, Kubrick made the movie as Clark wrote the novel. Not only the writing process, but the filming of the movie itself was groundbreaking as well. Specialized sets had to be designed to give the illusion of being in space. Groundbreaking camera tricks were designed to help with the illusion. The special effects were the best of the time, and still somewhat hold up even today, including a special photography trick that gave us the most famous sequence in the movie. (Kubrick won his only Oscar for the effects on 2001) The story of 2001: A Space Odyssey is honestly too convoluted to be typed out in a few short paragraphs. It spans millions of years, beginning in the pre-man era of Earth all the way to the first year of the 21st century. There's feuding man-ape tribes. There's a space station and a moon-base. There's a mission to Jupiter. There's a malfunctioning (or not) computer. There's a bunch of stars. And in the middle of all of it, a big black rectangular monolith. How is all of this connected? Well it's the movie of today's episode, A Bug's Life. Released in 1998, A Bug's Life tells the story of an oddball ant named Flik who only wants to help his colony. When they are harassed by a gang of grasshoppers, Flik will go out of his way to find "warrior" bugs to help fight off the grasshoppers. Will he find these "warriors"? Will he fight off the grasshoppers? Will hilarity ensue?A Bug's Life was the sophomore effort from the upstart animation studio. They set out to prove that they were not just a one-shot wonder, and boy did they prove it. Not only did Pixar expand the technical bounds of what was possible with computer animation, they also set out to do a more complex story with more complex characters than had ever been seen with computer animation. The result was (and still to this day is) one of the best looking computer animated films of all time.Listen along as we dive into this film that has largely taken a back seat to Pixar's subsequent films, but that still holds a dear place in the hearts of those who know of its greatness...Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast

In our last Pixar Shorts episode, we explored how Pixar built their animation techniques and technology that led them to an unprecedented run of success in the late 90's and the 2000's. For a while after the studio made their short film Knick Knack, they paused the production of short films to eventually make the feature-length hit Toy Story. They picked up production in 1998 when they released the short film Geri's Game. Thus, a tradition was born. Pixar has released a short film with every feature length film release starting with Geri's Game and A Bug's Life in 1998 and continues to do so to this day.For this episode, we are going to pick were we last left the Pixar short films. 109 years ago…… At 11:40PM on April 14th, Titanic met her match, in the shape of an iceberg. At 2:20 AM April 15th, after only 5 days on the sea, she slipped beneath never to see the light of day again.Living forever in a perpetual world of darkness…..In memory of the 1,496 who didn't make it...In a special memorial episode of The Movie Commentary Podcast, I bring you the episode that I have been waiting to do ever since I saw this podcast. James Cameron's film Titanic became a landmark point in film history when it was released in 1997. It became the first film to gross over $1 billion at the box office. It held the record for highest grossing film of all time for over 10 years. It tied the record for most Oscars won for a film (11). It is also seen by many as one of film's last great epics. Movies that are made on a big scale, with giant set pieces and thousands of extras. For fans of the actual ship itself, it brought the ship back to life. Never before had people seen the RMS Titanic sail in beautiful sunlight in living moving color. It brought us the joys of sailing to a new world for hundreds of immigrants. It brought us the elegance of the first class. It brought us the suspense of hoping, pleading that she would somehow miss the iceberg. It brought us the crushing realization that this beautiful ship, thought to be unsinkable by some, is going to sink. It brought us the horror of how terrible that night must have been for those who couldn't get a lifeboat. And finally, it brought us the grief and sadness that the real passengers felt when they realized the people they grew to love didn't make it. Simply put, no movie, no experience puts you on Titanic like this movie does.Listen along as we dive into several key components of this great film. From several key historical events to fictional components to interesting behind the scenes stories, this is an episode you won't want to miss.Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/

Today, we'll take a look at one of the earliest big-budget studio films to tackle the Titanic disaster. The 1953 film titled Titanic was produced by 20th Century Fox and starred Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck, Audrey Dalton, and a very young Robert Wagner. The film follows a woman named Julia Sturges who boards Titanic in an effort to take her kids to America to live a more grounded life instead of the wealthy first class life they were living in Europe. At the last second, her husband Richard discovers the plan and boards Titanic in an effort to talk her out of it. Their strained relationship will be tested throughout the entire voyage. Secrets will be revealed. Loyalties will be tested. Love will blossom. How will it all fare when the ship hits its destined iceberg?Although not the most historically accurate re-telling of the Titanic disaster, the 1953 film remains an important part of the Titanic story as it was the first major American made film about the disaster, and is a must see for any Titanic history buff.Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast

Imagine yourself in the shoes of the Fab Four from Liverpool (also known as The Beatles) in 1964. You've just released a single that has reached number 1 in the US. You've went on a tour of the United States, which included a stop on the legendary Ed Sullivan Show. You are already lighting the world on fire with your music. Surely there is nothing more that you can do. Except for making one of the greatest jukebox Comedy films of all time. That's exactly what happened when John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr starred in their first feature film outing. A Hard Day's Night follows 36 hours of they days in the lives of these 4 brits. There's a short-tempered manager they have to deal with, and an apparently cranky clean old grandpa. Will their TV performance go off without a hitch? Will Ringo get the respect he deserves? Will Shake ever stop being taller than Norm?Produced by United Artists, A Hard Day's Night was an interesting project to say the least. Mostly created to sell records in the US, no one knew the impact this film would have on music in film and the style of filming music. Listen along as four boys from Liverpool do a whole lot of singing, dancing, and parading. Find out why the director Richard Lester is considered the grandfather of MTV and so much more!!Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast

You have some weird, psychotic killer going around killing horny teenagers and then one final girl stands up to them at the end. However ultimately, the killer comes back the next movie because they can't die for some weird reasons.John Carpenter's 1978 Horror Icon Halloween didn't invent the slasher genre, but it pioneered several tropes about the genre and ultimately turned the genre into the lucrative money-maker that it is today.Halloween follows Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis in her first feature length film) and her friends being stalked by escaped mental institution patient Michael Myers (Nick Castle, among others) on Halloween night. Along the way, Michael is being pursued by his doctor Samuel Loomis (played by Donald Pleasance). Will Laurie and her friends survive the night? Will Loomis stop Michael? Will Michael ever breath out of his nose?(seriously, his breathing is a tad ridiculous)With Halloween turning into a landmark horror film, its hard to imagine that it's the product of a 27 year-old film school drop-out as director with a cast and crew working on their first ever feature film on a budget of 325,000 dollars. But, using clever film tricks, brilliant cinematography, and an iconic score composed by John Carpenter himself, the film turned into a icon for all horror fans to see. Disclaimer-The YouTube version of this podcast will contain the full film with my commentary recorded over. If you would like to watch that version, here is the link to the video:https://youtu.be/sK1eoPuChMUWhen newcomer director George A. Romero embarked on his first feature length film, an independently produced picture going by the production name of Monster Flick, he and his fellow cast and crew had no idea the impact that they would have on modern day horror. Later changed to Night of the Living Dead, this film was the catalyst for modern day zombie movie phenomenon such as 28 Days Later, World War Z, and so many others.Set in rural Pennsylvania (30 miles outside of Pittsburgh), Barbara and her brother Johnny are attacked by a devilish looking Ghoul (they don't use the word zombie in this film). After Johnny is killed, the ghoul chases Barbara to an old looking farmhouse where she meets up with other survivors. As the people hunker down in the old farmhouse for the night, they must make several decisions that will ultimately lead to life or death. Not only revolutionary in its portrayal of cannibalistic flesh-eating corpses, Night of the Living Dead is also lauded as the first movie to cast an African-American in the leading role (Duane Jones as Ben).Listen along as I dive into the interesting history behind the film. From its bare-bones production, to interesting special effects, to even a historic mistake that cost the makers of this film millions of Dollars. Soooo, I was asked to watch Insidious. I took a while to do it because I don't like scary movies. For a different style of episode, I decided to record an episode in which I kind of made fun of the film while I watched it (ala Mystery Science Theatre 3000). From the minds of James Wan and Leigh Wannell, the creative duo behind the Saw franchise, comes Insidious. The film follows the Lambert family as their oldest son Dalton enters into a coma. Thought to be a normal coma at first, the family soon discovers that there are more sinister forces at bay. This leads the family to confront its own history and venture into the Further to save their son. Will this new style be funny? Tune in to be (more than likely) disappointed!!!Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast
What happens when you mix a story by one of the greatest horror writers of all time with the film savviness of one the greatest film directors of all time? The result is 1980's The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick, adapted from Stephen King's book of the same name. The Story of The Shining sends us to the Overlook Hotel in Colorado, to where Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the hotel's winter caretaker. He moves in with his wife Wendy (Shelly Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd), who unknowingly has a great telepathic ability to see and hear things others can't. As the winter rages, the Torrances find out that the hotel is not all that it seems, and that will turn out to have deadly consequences. While some moviegoers see The Shining as a simple story about a family tormented by an evil hotel, I see a movie chalked full of behind the scenes stories and hidden messages to be explored. Listen along as we dive into this curious film. From the stories origins, to the long arduous production Stanley Kubrick put his cast and crew through, to the eventual feud between the two titans of their respective mediums. By 1974, Steven Spielberg had just released his first feature length film and Peter Benchley published his first novel. Little did these two rookies know that they would combine to make one of the most famous movies of all time. What started off as an idea about a fish, turned into a New York Times bestseller and an Academy-Award winning film. Jaws tells the story of small-town police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider). When he is confronted by a string of shark attacks, he must recruit the marine biologist Matt Hooper (played by Richard Dryfeuss) and the grizzled shark hunter Quint (played by Robert Shaw) to hunt down and destroy the beast. While the story of Jaws has become engrained into our modern Pop-culture, the story of how the book became a movie has become the stuff of Hollywood legend. The over-blown schedule. The doubled budget. The hair-pulling decision to shoot the film on the REAL Atlantic Ocean. And of course, to top it off, the main star of the show, the shark, would not work. It is from this tattered production that the titan known as Steven Spielberg was born as he had to craft a movie that was in a lot of trouble without the main "star". Listen along as I dive into the behind the scenes story of how Jaws became a film. How was the film different than the book? What was the USS Indianapolis? Why was the shark not working a blessing instead of a curse?Tune in to find out!!Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast
Recommended by Madison Ferriell and joined by my lovely sister Mackenzie, the next episode of The Movie Commentary Podcast sees us watching the sixth Harry Potter movie: Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince. Harry Potter has become a pop-culture phenomenon ever since the first book was released in 1997. Since then, there have been seven books, eight movies, one play, several spin-offs and legions of fans. Starring the longtime trio of Daniel Radcliff as Harry Potter; Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley; and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, the sixth movie in the Harry Potter series sees our trio heading back to Hogwarts as the wizarding world is rife with war against the Dark Lord Voldemort. Harry must navigate the perils of being the most famous wizard in the world who is under constant danger, along with the usual hijinks that every 17 year old gets involved with when at school. Listen along as Mackenzie and I (attempt) to talk about all things Harry Potter. Our information and details may not be correct, but it's still a fun time!!Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram: @themoviecommentarypodcast
For a bit of a shorter episode this week, I am taking a look at the dynamic plasticine duo of Wallace and Gromit by watching their first two film outings. A Grand Day Out released in 1989 and The Wrong Trousers released in 1993 both garnered Oscar nominations for the duo's creator, Nick Park, with The Wrong Trousers winning in 1994.Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) is an eccentric inventor and his faithful (and also mute) dog Gromit are always up to some sort of hijinks. From going to the moon to get some cheese, to renting a room to a criminal burglar penguin, it is never a dull moment at 62 West Wallaby Street!Listen along as I also dive into some of the history of the creation of this duo. From humble beginnings to a worldwide phenomenon, listen in as we take a look at Wallace and Gromit!!The Movie Commentary Podcast now on iHeart Radio!!! The 1982 classic E. T. is a beloved movie the world over. Its heart-warming story about the friendship between a lonely boy and a lost alien has delighted movie-goes for almost 40 years. Along with great performances by Henry Thomas as the lonely boy Elliot, a very young Drew Barrymore as his sister Gertie, and a mature-looking Robert MacNaughton as Elliot's older brother Mike, and one of the greatest film scores put to cinema, E. T. is on many's list of one of the greatest films of all time. But when looking at what inspired the creation of E. T., we gain a whole new appreciation for not only the film, but it's acclaimed director, Steven Spielberg. In 1995, after 9 years of struggling to make ends meet in selling computers and making short animated films, PIXAR animation collaborated with Walt Disney Studios to fulfill their lifelong goal of creating the first computer animated film. Toy Story eventually went on to pave the way for the animation industry that we know today. Not only is it a landmark film in the history of cinema, but it's also a warm, light-hearted comedy with great characters and and terrific performances by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, Jim Varney, Annie Potts, and so many more. It's a film with an interesting history that almost never happened. Released in 1958, A Night to Remember may not be as well known as James Cameron's 1997 "Titanic", but to Titanic historians and history buffs, it is highly regarded as one of the most historically accurate film adaptations of the night of April 14-15th, 1912. As I sit down to watch A Night to Remember, we'll talk about some of the events surrounding the night of the sinking, to a far off ship that passengers could see in the distance, to miscommunication among the crew, all the way to an overturned lifeboat that saved 30 men. Told through the eyes of Titanic's second officer Charles Hebert Lightoller (played by Kenneth Moore), A Night to Remember is a must watch for any of those interested in the Titanic story.Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastInstagram: @themoviecommentarypodcast
