Hello and welcome to episode 00022 of the Ten Thousand Heroes Podcast. I recorded today's interview with Robert MacNaughton. Robert MacNaughton is an executive coach and facilitator who specializes in balancing interpersonal development alongside individual performance. Robert founded the Integral Center in Boulder, Colorado in association with renowned philosopher Ken Wilber, which hosted an international community of thought leaders, practitioners, and "evolutionaries." He now hosts a podcast and works as an executive coach, supports leaders in resolving the gaps between their vision, roadmap, team alignment, and sustainable execution. I got Robert to give me a watered-down digestible overview of integral philosophy, complete with a simple color coding system, and then to present some of the best and worst features of each level of development. The invitation to the listener is not to try to categroize yourself or the people you dislike, but rather to widen your perspective to the point where you realize every perspective has beauties and flaws, or, as Robert's own podcast is called, “disasters and dignities”. What are the negative consequences of my own worldview? How can I address them by integrating aspects of worldviews that I have heretofore despised. That's the point, as far as I'm concerned… Thanks again for listening to today's show. Stay tuned after the interview for the debrief with my co-host Nathan Ramos. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1982 science fiction film "E.T. - the Extra-Terrestrial" produced and directed by Steven Spielberg - which tells the story of Elliot, a 10 year-old boy, who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth after their spacecraft accidentally leaves them while they are conducting a secret botanical specimen mission near a California forest. "E.T - the Extra-Terrestrial" is a firm family favourite for all generations and is widely regarded as being one of the greatest films ever made. The film stars Henry Thomas as Elliot, Dee Wallace as Mary (Elliot's mother), Drew Barrymore as Gertie (Elliot's younger sister), Robert MacNaughton as Michael (Elliot's older brother), and Peter Coyote as Keys (a government agent attempting to capture E.T.). In this episode of Dignities and Disasters, Robert MacNaughton and Michael Porcelli wade into the murky waters of capitalism. What evokes a bitter taste in the mouth for some, is to others an ideology that has advanced society in the direction of innovation and prosperity. From financial mechanisms through free market exchange and privatization of production, what exactly is capitalism? What has it done right and where has it fallen down? Some of the topics we explore: Context: - Semantics, healthy debate, and mutual understanding Dignities: - Private ownership of the means of production, and operation for profit as a way of getting goods and services into hands that need them - Voluntary exchange--freedom to inter a transaction without government intervention - The pricing mechanism, aka the market, which informs supply & demand, and leads to innovation - Real-Estate vs “Un-Real”-Estate (fictitious monetary instruments) - Market efficiencies - Collectivization of ownership -- e.g. the Dutch East Indies Company - Decentralized “planning” - Profit incentive & efficiency of capital accumulation - Wage labor is better than slave/serf labor - Complex industrial division of labor - Property rights - Keynesian macroeconomic perspectives - Socially responsible (ESG) investment funds - The Montreal Protocol (not the Moscow treaty
In this episode of Dignities & Disasters, Robert MacNaughton and Michael Porcelli discuss one of the topics on the tips of the tongues of the United States these days. When it comes to Socialism, the definition itself seems to be loosely adopted by the political agenda it is pushing. We drive to the heart of socialism in many of its forms and unpack the good, the bad, and the confusing. We call this version 0.1 of addressing this topic since we're not political or economic authorities, and we're just scratching the surface of this far-sweeping and divisive area of discussion. Some of the topics we explore: The Basics: - Social ownership of the means of production - Marx defined and popularized “Capitalism” in Das Kapital - Authoritarian socialism (Eastern bloc) vs democratic socialism (Western bloc) - The Nordic model is not socialism, but a social democracy or “cuddly capitalism”; free market capitalist with a more generous welfare state and a high personal tax burden shared by medium and low income households The Dignities: - Humans are inherently equal, and everyone should have an equal opportunity to thrive - We spread the benefits of social membership to those whose own efforts do not suffice to obtain basic welfare - We enjoy the fruits of society only if we are also ready to share them - Nobody suffers from their basic needs not being met due to no fault of their own - Why you should be a socialist: wealth disparity; crony capitalism; obvious distribution problems ; basic social welfare The Disasters: - Creation of a class of dependents - Antagonizes those that live responsibly and separates dependents from a full experience of citizenship - Open ended budgets with ever increasing costs and borrowing from the future - The issue is politicized -- e.g. Marx's war language; an essential antagonism between proletariat and bourgeoisie; class war, only when fomented by political leaders: e.g. Lenin in Russia, Mao in China - Measuring Poverty -- Poverty is defined relatively -- “Relative Deprivation” e.g. the British Labor govt defined poverty as “people with 60% of median income”. Whereas the World Bank defines poverty in absolute terms -- defining extreme poverty as living on less than US$1.90 per day - The “zero sum vision” -- a fallacy that sees life where every success requires someone's failure, i.e. winning requires losing - The over involvement of the state paid by taxes on working classes - Cannot admit that the poor benefit from the wealth of the wealthy - Lenin: October Revolution, Stalin: the kulaks, and Hitler: the Jews - The failed socialist nations, Communism, The totalitarian temptation to remake society - An attempt to realize a heaven that inevitably leads to hell Resources mentioned: - Roger Scruton - How to be a Conservative - Why You Should be a Socialist - Nathan Robinson - Proven Practices for this Pandemic Crisis with Daniel P Brown (re: learned helplessness vs virtuous cycle of self-improvement) from the State of Emergence podcast with Terry Patten - Countries that have tried socialism and failed - Forbes
Join us for this nuanced investigation of the postmodernism worldview as Robert MacNaughton and Michael Porcelli unpack what's worth keeping and what's gone over the edge in this late 20th century movement that questions all that would normally be considered "True." There's a lot of discussion these days about all of the dangers of postmodernism if you're plugged into the “Intellectual Dark Web”--e.g. identity politics, political correctness, partisan politics, and cancel culture. What you won't easily find is an appropriate nuanced acknowledgement of what's important about how postmodernism has up-leveled our culture and therefore shouldn't be disregarded wholesale. The aim here is to distinguish both sides as fairly as we can--acknowledging our biases where we're aware of them--and giving you the best opportunity to recognize where and how these elements live in your own world. As this is the first episode in this series, we decided to start with some philosophical foundations. In many ways, helping our clients, friends, and community with the “pitfalls of postmodernism” has been a primary inspiration for this project, and the principles explored here will likely echo through the series. E.T.: The Extraterrestrial starts in a forest outside a California suburb. An alien spacecraft lands, and several extraterrestrials emerge, gathering flora samples. Suspicious humans arrive, the aliens escape, leaving one behind. He hides in a backyard shed, discovered by a 10-year-old boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Startled and scared, Elliott hides the alien, whom he dubs “E.T.,” in his room, and they become friends. E.T. determines to find his way back to his world by gathering the materials necessary to build a transmitter and “phone home” for his kin to come back and get him, as he appears to be growing weaker the longer he remains on Earth. However, Earth’s scientists aren’t going to let such an extraordinary creature get away quickly. STeven Spielberg directs. Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, and Peter Coyote also appear.

Dr. Tom Habib is a clinical psychologist specializing in couple’s therapy. Tom has published papers on a Couple’s Line of Development (Integral Leadership Review, Aug-Nov, 2016, revised 2018) in addition to other publications on other topics. He has presented at the Integral Theory Conference, at the Integral European Conference where he was recognized for the Best Practitioner Paper, Honorable Mention. Tom is currently serving as the chair for the International Consortium of Integral Scholars for IEC 2020. Tom has been recognized by Academia.edu as achieving the top 1% researcher in recognition of how often his work is viewed by researchers all over the world. In this episode, Dr. Tom Habib and Dr. Jessica Higgins discuss: Exploring the developmental stages of couplehood, along with the challenges and opportunities. How a couple’s intimacy is dependent on each person’s developmental history. Society’s glorification of the exciting first stage of relationships and how that adds to the challenges of surviving the next phase of relationship (where reality sets in). Two common fantasies we have in relationship and how they pose a barrier to true intimacy. “People are blowing up their lives because they are so hungry for connection.” Dr. Tom Habib Getting to the place where you recognize and value each other’s strengths and weaknesses and figure out how to use those to work together. Working towards an abundance and gratitude mindset, understanding your inner world more fully, and a willingness to be transparent with your partner. Embracing moments of emotional vulnerability to develop resonance and build moments of connection and intimacy with your significant other. What we can learn from the last developmental stage of relationship. How to determine what stage you are in and how to grow your relationship. “As Ken Wilber talks about, the ability to show up fully means that you have cleaned up, you've grown up, and you've woken up. There's enough trust to not overreact to that moment, then the enlightenment really starts to build, because when they reveal something, you begin to go, ‘Wow, I didn't even see that. I wanna see more.’ ...because you're aware that it's always unfolding. And when you can unfold it with two people, it really gets special." — Dr. Tom Habib Mentioned: A Couples Line of Development by Dr. Tom Habib Integral European Conference: IEC ONLINE 2020 First Love Vs Spiritual Love Relationship Map to Happy Lasting Love – Free Guide ERP 197: How To Engage In More Conscious Communication - an Interview with Robert Macnaughton (podcast) ERP 159: What Happens When Your Partner is at a Different Stage of Development? BTB's Al Sotto interviews actress Dee Wallace and actor Robert MacNaughton from the iconic movie, ET The Extraterrestrial, on-location at the Monster Mania Convention (www.monstermania.net) in Cherry Hill, NJ! Dee and Robert talk about whether they would be on board with any sequel, ET reunions across the country, keeping in touch with co-star Drew Barrymore and more!
Steven Spielberg's blockbuster "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" has been a part of the world's consciousness since it debuted in 1982, but when you take off those nostalgia goggles and look at it with fresh eyes, you'll realize it's nothing more than a story about a boy and his dog, a horror movie aimed at kids, and, strangely, a story with strong Jesus Christ parallels. This movie gave us many things: Reese's Pieces (one of the dozens of product placements in this), Drew Barrymore, the Amblin logo, and, of course, "Mac and Me." Henry Thomas plays the main character, a child named Elliott, who creepily gets taken over by an alien botanist who was left behind on Earth by his species. Elliott enjoys not dissecting frogs, screaming, and being mentally brainwashed by a beer-drinking, Speak-&-Spell-ing, wax-candy-eating monster. Dee Wallace plays Elliott's frazzled single mother, who is falling apart because her husband recently left her and then took off to Mexico with some woman. Her likes include: barely miss seeing E.T. at every step, dressing up as a sexy cat, and leaving children unattended. Her dislikes include: Mexico, pizza, and kids showing up minutes late of their vague curfews. Robert MacNaughton plays Elliot's older brother, Michael, who looks like a mix of Charlie Bucket, Eddie Haskell and Steve Buscemi. He helps Elliott hide E.T. and heroically aides in his ultimate survival and homecoming. Michael loves Dungeons & Dragons, Space Invaders, yet also plays on the football team. A real Renaissance Man. Drew Barrymore plays Elliott's little sister, Gertie, who says cute things, teaches E.T. to talk, and agrees to allow E.T. to take her place while they pretend to go trick-or-treating. And Peter Coyote plays an unnamed (and mostly unseen) government official who is hunting E.T. and has a bunch of keys attached to his belt. Join us as we dive deep into all the product placement in this movie, discuss Spielberg's daddy issues and really dissect this whole "E.T. is Jesus" thing. We talk with Robert about social issues, structure-stages, and the latest craze of Jordan Peterson's popularity. Robert is a leader within the Integral Theory "movement" initiated by Ken Wilber's philosophical work. He led the Integral Center in Boulder, and has fresh insight from both a practioner view and leadership view. We look at the clash between post-modernism and modernist thinking: in Integral terms, Orange and Green. We also dive into the different spiritual paths Robert has pursued and taught. This is an interesting episode, especially for those concerned about the intersection of spirituality with the socio-political landscape. And!
