For this second archive episode, Chris and Alex revisit Episode 81 of the podcast that gave listeners a quickfire journey through Sub-Saharan African animation with Paula Callus, a Professor in the National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University and an expert in Sub-Saharan African animation. The films covered in this instalment were Moustapha Alassane's Bon Voyage Sim (1966), Ng'endo Mukii's Yellow Fever (2013), Iwa (2009) from Nigerian filmmaker, illustrator and art director Kenneth (Shofela) Coker, the British/Kenyan animated television series Tinga Tinga Tales (2010-2012), and the science-fiction allegory Pumzi (2009) from writer and director Wanuri Kahiu. Lots here on the cultural and historical specificity of fantasy storytelling, global animation practices, and the post-colonial legacies that guide how African animation has been culturally and critically understood. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Two years before William Gibson's novel Neuromancer coined the term “cyberspace” the Disney corporation unleashed a bold and daring vision of anthropomorphic distributed computing gone wild. Featuring a young and wildly talented Jeff Bridges, and more dance belts and BMX armor than you can shake a data disc at, Steven Lisberger's ground-breaking proto-CGI extravaganza, Tron, is a bizarre and beautiful vision of a future that never came to pass! Join Javi, Paul, and - needless to say - Producer Dumont as they get digitized into the gaming grid to marvel at Syd Mead's generation-defining production design, do battle with the nefarious Master Control Program, and struggle to make sense of the movie's plot!

Computer graphics (or CG) has changed the way we experience the art of moving images. Computer graphics is the difference between Steamboat Willie and Buzz Lightyear, between ping pong and PONG. It began in 1963 when an MIT graduate student named Ivan Sutherland created Sketchpad, the first true computer animation program. Sutherland noted: "Since motion can be put into Sketchpad drawings, it might be exciting to try making cartoons." This book, the first full-length history of CG, shows us how Sutherland's seemingly offhand idea grew into a multibillion dollar industry. In Moving Innovation, Tom Sito--himself an animator and industry insider for more than thirty years--describes the evolution of CG. His story features a memorable cast of characters--math nerds, avant-garde artists, cold warriors, hippies, video game enthusiasts, and studio executives: disparate types united by a common vision. Sito shows us how fifty years of work by this motley crew made movies like Toy Story and Avatar possible. Tom Sito has been a professional animator since 1975. One of the key players in Disney's animation revival of the 1980s and 1990s, he worked on such classic Disney films as The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and The Lion King (1994). He left Disney to help set up the Dreamworks Animation Unit in 1995. He is Professor of Cinema Practice in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. Tom Sito is a master animator and a walking encyclopedia of animation—not only for his credentials, which range from Who Framed Roger Rabbit to Scooby-Doo—but for seeking out pioneers and masters of the art form and telling their stories. He's a teacher, a scholar, a union leader, an author and also a terrific guy who used to drop in to Leonard's animation class at the New School for Social Research in NYC back in the 1970s! Jessie marvels at the longevity of their friendship, which shows no sign of ceasing anytime soon. Tom's books include Drawing the Line: The Untold Story of the Animation Unions from Bosko to Bart Simpson, Moving Innovation, A history of Computer Animation, and Eat, Drink, Animate: An Animator's Cookbook.

Episode 101 confronts the animated representation of disease and illness via Warner Brothers' 2001 cel-animated/live-action hybrid Osmosis Jones (Peter Farrelly & Bobby Farrelly, 2001), which tells the story of a white blood cell policeman who joins together with a cold pill to stop a deadly virus from destroying their human host. Joining Chris and Alex to talk about the film's imaginative depictions of a body's internal workings is Osmosis Jones' animation director Tom Sito, a veteran of the Hollywood animation industry who has worked on numerous animated fantasy films at the Walt Disney, DreamWorks, and Warner Brothers studios, from Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and The Lion King (1994) to Shrek (2001) and Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003). Tom is currently Professor of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, and author of the books Drawing the Line: The Untold Story of the Animation Unions from Bosko to Bart Simpson (2006), Moving Innovation, A History of Computer Animation (2013), and, more recently, Eat, Drink, Animate: An Animator's Cookbook (2019) containing the food recipes of famous animators such as Walt Disney and Chuck Jones. Listen as they discuss the production of the animated sequences for Osmosis Jones and the industrial and aesthetic stakes of hybridity; celebrity voice acting, “audio discipline,” and how the film's casting practices feed into its bi-racial buddy cop narrative; the creative representation of human biology as a bustling and hyper-modern urban space; the affordances of animation for shifting scales and fantastical perspectives; and how Osmosis Jones reveals the medium's metaphorical abilities in allowing spectators to grasp the often intangible shape of things. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

If you're an artist, sometimes looking back on your earliest work can be – well – somewhat embarrassing. But as Edinboro University professor Karabo Legwaila explains in today's episode of “Tartan Talks,” that's one of the best ways to improve as an artist. Karabo Legwaila joined the Art Department in the fall of 2016 as a professor of Computer Animation. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as a lead technical animator and dynamics specialist. Originally from Botswana, Karabo received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Computer Animation at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He discusses what it's like seeing your work in front of millions of people and how the field of animation has come a long way with inclusive culture. World-renowned professor Dr. Gino Yu unlocks the science of consciousness and presents his vision for the next stage of human evolution. He shares his personal awakening experience that led him from computer science and digital entertainment to exploring the world of mysticism and consciousness. His amazing work over decades draws together neuroscience, developmental and humanistic psychology, phenomenology, epistemology and eastern spiritual practices and philosophies. As humanity collectively goes through the ascension, Gino offers his inspiring vision for how to support and guide this developmental process through his innovative projects - cutting edge as well as deeply humane and compassionate, they recognize entrepreneurship as a spiritual path, nurture future growth and evolution, and engender much needed community for people having awakening experiences around the globe. Well it's the movie of today's episode, A Bug's Life. Released in 1998, A Bug's Life tells the story of an oddball ant named Flik who only wants to help his colony. When they are harassed by a gang of grasshoppers, Flik will go out of his way to find "warrior" bugs to help fight off the grasshoppers. Will he find these "warriors"? Will he fight off the grasshoppers? Will hilarity ensue?A Bug's Life was the sophomore effort from the upstart animation studio. They set out to prove that they were not just a one-shot wonder, and boy did they prove it. Not only did Pixar expand the technical bounds of what was possible with computer animation, they also set out to do a more complex story with more complex characters than had ever been seen with computer animation. The result was (and still to this day is) one of the best looking computer animated films of all time.Listen along as we dive into this film that has largely taken a back seat to Pixar's subsequent films, but that still holds a dear place in the hearts of those who know of its greatness...Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast

In our last Pixar Shorts episode, we explored how Pixar built their animation techniques and technology that led them to an unprecedented run of success in the late 90's and the 2000's. For a while after the studio made their short film Knick Knack, they paused the production of short films to eventually make the feature-length hit Toy Story. They picked up production in 1998 when they released the short film Geri's Game. Thus, a tradition was born. Pixar has released a short film with every feature length film release starting with Geri's Game and A Bug's Life in 1998 and continues to do so to this day.For this episode, we are going to pick were we last left the Pixar short films. Starting with Geri's Game in 1998 to Day and Night in 2010, we are going to watch the wonderful short films Pixar has produced. From interesting behind the scenes stories, to interesting directors who got their start at Pixar by creating one of these great films. It's a short one but a good one!!
