Forget the vampire tropes this week; let's hallucinate and appreciate. Horror scholar Lea Anderson (Fangoria, Shudder) is here to look deep into 1973's "Ganja & Hess" (and honestly, help me understand it). This beguiling Black vampire story stars Marlene Clark and Duane Jones as a pair of cursed, blood-craving immortals reckoning with the beauty and horror of forever togetherness. We break down ‘70s movie blood, this film's complex take on theology, and why Marlene Clark's performance “is everything” to Lea.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)Other than some narrative pacing issues and some annoying characters, this film holds up surprisingly well, still providing some creepiness and tons of spooky atomsphere. I gave this an 8/10 for being the first zombie movie and still be very entertaining. Lots of great cinematography and a wonderful leading man in Duane Jones. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/ You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews

Synopsis Night of the Living Dead is a zombie movie about a group of strangers who are funneled into a farmhouse and forced to work together for survival. Ben, our protagonist played by Duane Jones is a strong and courageous man who takes it upon himself to lead the group as they struggle to escape the zombie hoard entrapping them in the home. Through twists and turns they learn that friendship was what they really needed all along. Review of Night of the Living Dead Night of the Living Dead is a foundational horror movie that deserves to be a classic. It has a classic zombie movie feel and did a lot to inspire zombie movies in the future. Despite my enjoyment of the film, there are still points in the movie that feel slow, and the dialogue seems to repeat itself a lot when trying to explain the situation. The makeup isn't always very convincing, at least not compared to modern zombie movies, but it's almost refreshing to see zombies that aren't completely covered in blood and gore. Duane Jones gives a fantastic performance as Ben, and it's easy to root for his strong character. Judith O'Dea's acting is a little over the top for me at times, and her character becomes pretty annoying, but hey maybe if I was in a zombie apocalypse I'd be just as scared and useless as her.  Score 8/10

This week, Dave and Bryan celebrate Black History Month with a look at Bill Gunn's delirious 1973 vampire movie, Ganja & Hess, which stars Gunn, Marlene Clark, and Duane Jones from Night of the Living Dead. It's a sleepy, dreamy art film about black identity, gender, class, and the loneliness of a man without ancestry as damaged people deal with themes of blackness in America through the gauzy lens of a vampire movie. Often lumped in with blaxploitation movies like Blacula and Shaft, it is anything but. Calling all ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and goodhearted scaredy cats! Overlapping Dialogue's 2nd annual Spooktober Spooktacular kicks off with a horror duology as iconic as they come: Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, George Romero's prescient codas on the decaying state of human flesh and the, you know, larger state of humanity. But before we devour those, join us for a discussion of a twisted modern day pairing in Don't Worry Darling and Blonde, new releases that have generated a great deal of debate and controversy in their own right. Our inevitable breakdown of Romero's zombie classics prompts us to talk about the sociopolitical contexts in which these films were made, admire how their director found novel ways to continually resurrect all things undead, and just get giddy reflecting on the sights and sounds inherent to a rowdy biker gang running riot on a zombie horde in an abandoned suburban mall. This episode represents a new format and era for Overlapping Dialogue, sans audio commentary, with a focus on simply ruminating on and having fun communing over the latest double feature in question. We hope you have as much joy listening as we had recording it, whether it's your first time or first time in a long time.  On this episode we look at a genre and a sub-genre within that - Blaxploitation horror films! Blaxploitation was a genre that existed for only a short time in the 70s, but had a major impact. Together with our guest, Lord Blood-Rah, we'll discuss the origins of the genre and then take a look at several horror films that spun out of it.Blacula (1972) is probably the best-known of these films, and it's a well-done vampire story. William Marshall plays Prince Mamuwalde, who is turned into a vampire by Dracula himself. He awakens in modern day (1970s) Los Angeles and discovers what he believes to be his reincarnated wife. Of course, carnage ensues! It's a terrific, even scary film and you should see it if you haven't.It was followed up the next year by Scream Blacula Scream, which saw Blacula brought back to unlife by means of voodoo. Blacula once again stalks LA, but he tires of being a vampire and seeks a cure via voodoo priestess Pam Grier. Definitely the most unusual of the films we cover is Ganja and Hess (1973), which has been described as an experimental horror film or an art film. Whatever you want to call it, it is in a category all its own. The creation of writer/director Bill Gunn (who also acts in it), it tells the story of Dr. Hess Green, who is an expert on the ancient Myrthian people of Africa, who drank blood. He gets a new assistant who is completely insane and attacks him with a Myrthian artifact, which turns Hess into a vampire himself. Eventually Hess begins a relationship with Ganja, the wife of his former assistant, and she too becomes a vampire. The film is extremely moody and stark. Duane Jones, best known for his role as Ben in Night of the Living Dead, plays Hess.We follow these up by looking at Abby (1974), a take on The Exorcist, Sugar Hill (1974), a zombie revenge flick, and last but certainly not least, Rudy Ray Moore's Petey Wheatstraw, The Devil's Son-in-Law (1977), where the Dolemite actor takes on Satan himself. Certainly a variety of films to choose from! For our Sensor Sweep, Commander Larry shares a very appropriate book: Horror Noire: Blacks in American Horror Films from the 1890s to present by Robin R. Means-Coleman. This tome takes a deep look at the history of African Americans in horror films, and how their roles changed over time. There's also a documentary of the same name. Check it out!Don't forget, you can catch Lord Blood-Rah on LordBloodRah.com. There you can find links to his long-running series, Lord Blood-Rah's Nerve Wrackin' Theater, as well as his podcast, his Patreon series, and more. Cyberpunk 2077 is nigh and goodbye to being social! Shoutout to Mike Pondsmith and CD Projekt Red for ruining so many relationships and making so many people broke at the end of 2020. Who knew Cyberpunk 2077 was a self-fulfilling prophecy? This episode I sit down with Gail D Taylor and talk about the fate of Black people, from Jim Crow, to Alisha Wormsley, to the zombie apocalypse according to Duane Jones. We chat about afrofuturism and how morphogenic fields continue to guide Black traditions, new and old, like an invisible hand of the ancestors. Tonight, we're shuffling through the one that started it all: Night of the Living Dead. We'll be discussing the making of process, its cultural impact, and themes, Duane Jones' legendary performance as Ben, as well as covering Tom Savini's 1990 remake, Tony Todd's sick karate skills, and how each played a part in our growing obsession with horror.
