1973's Slither was the directorial debut of Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin, My Girl) and the screenwriting debut for W.D. Richter (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Big Trouble In Little China). In the freewheeling comedic thriller, James Caan goes on the road looking for a stash of embezzled money with Peter Boyle, Louise Lasser and Sally Kellerman in tow. Famously, Caan was quoted saying he took the role for the money and had little understanding of the story. Dan and Vicky discuss the film along with lots of recently seen including Nosferatu, The Front Room, Shudder's doc series Horror's Greatest, Better Man, Leigh Wannell's Wolfman, Trim Season and The Brutalist. *Sound issues exist in this episode. When Australian director James Gunn and his writer friend Leigh Wannell graduated from film school, they decided to work together on a low budget horror film after being inspired by “The Blair Witch Project.” Another film titled “Pi” by Darren Aronofsky convinced them they could self-finance the film and they started coming up with ideas. They decided the cheapest film possible would involve two characters being locked inside of a room together. Wan then pitched the idea about two men being chained on opposite sides of a bathroom with a dead body in the middle as they scramble to figure out how they both ended up there. It wasn’t until months later when Whannel was convinced he might have a brain tumor after experiencing excruciating migraines that he came up with the concept about a character who only had a year or two to live and he decides to put other people into that same situation with only a few minutes to choose their fate. After making a short film with a scene that would later be used in the full length movie, they were given funding and 18 days to shoot it. The end result was the start of a horror franchise that would go onto produce seven direct sequels and a new film called “Spiral” due out in 2021.In anticipation of the new film “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” opening in theaters, Rewind of the Living Dead goes back to 2004 to review the original movie in the franchise — “Saw”….
In this special edition of Rewind of the Living Dead, we discuss the 2021 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, breaking down all of the winners and giving some of our picks for the best in horror for the past year and what's coming next in 2021.

Dracula. Frankenstein. The Wolfman.. These were all staples of the Universal Monsters line made famous by performances from actors such as Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. Years later, Universal decided to relaunch a new monstrous universe based around those same iconic characters but a disastrous attempt at remaking The Mummy starring Tom Cruise cast doubts that the great monster of old would ever rise again. That was until 2020 when Leigh Wannell, previously known as the creator of the “Saw” universe, wrote and directed a movie co-produced by Blumhouse on a small budget of just $7 million. Starring Elisabeth Moss in the lead role as a wife desperate to get away from her abusive husband, “The Invisible Man” put a tech-spin on the old classic from H.G. Wells. In the latest episode of “Rewind of the Living Dead,” we’re going to put some flour on the floor and keep the paint cans ready as we talk about the 2020 horror film “The Invisible Man”…

Soooo, I was asked to watch Insidious. I took a while to do it because I don't like scary movies. For a different style of episode, I decided to record an episode in which I kind of made fun of the film while I watched it (ala Mystery Science Theatre 3000). From the minds of James Wan and Leigh Wannell, the creative duo behind the Saw franchise, comes Insidious. The film follows the Lambert family as their oldest son Dalton enters into a coma. Thought to be a normal coma at first, the family soon discovers that there are more sinister forces at bay. This leads the family to confront its own history and venture into the Further to save their son. Will this new style be funny? Tune in to be (more than likely) disappointed!!!Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast

An effort to flee an abusive relationship leads to a battle with an enemy who always seems a step ahead...and can't be seen. This is a review of The Invisible Man... Cecilia's been planning her escape from her husband, the rich and brilliant Adrian...thing is, he's been planning, too...attacking everything she loves while invisible to the naked eye... The Blumhouse guys tag Leigh Wannell, the writer behind a bunch of the Saw movies, to write and fill the director's chair for what's being called a contemporary adaptation of the H-G Wells novel of the same name...while also rebooting the film series and Universal Monsters series. Like in his other films, Wannell is great at using the camera almost as a character...building a level of tension that's tough to maintain while also not relying on cheap jump scares. I was seriously on the edge of my seat, grabbing the armrest and preparing for what might come next. And a lot of that had to do with star Elisabeth Moss who was really stellar in this part...she's smart, all action and no nonsense and didn't just fold despite the physical and mental attacks...very much in the spirit of Lori Strode from the original Halloween movie. Aldis Hodge as James and Storm Reid as his daughter were also both very good and tried to have the back of their longtime friend who appeared to be losing it. I'll say it again...at more than two hours, it was too long...but you can see that for yourself... ...and it's still not a reason to skip this one...and big screen is the way to go. And because of that I give The Invisible Man, four stars out of five on the Rob Rating Scale...this one is something to see.

When Saw came out in 2004 no one expected it to rapidly become the premiere horror franchise of the 21st century, but since then Saw has laid claim to the Halloween holiday, with each year seeing the release of a new installment in this horror series. It all started with Carey Elwes and Leigh Wannell waking up in a dirty bathroom, chained at the leg, and one is told to kill the other. With Danny Glover, Monica Potter, Michael Emerson, and Shawnee Smith rounding out the cast, does this movie deserve to be the modern day epitome of the horror film?
