Are the Faroe Islands one of the most dramatic places on earth to watch football? German journalist Steffen Trumpf wrote a book all about his experiences watching football in this breathtaking part of the world, and we examined what makes it truly special. We discussed: - Why football is so important to the people of the Islands - How the team punches above it's weight on the international stage - Some of the unique clubs that make up it's leagues - and what it's like running a marathon in these conditions! #faroeislands #faroeislandsfootball #footballpodcast #fifa #uefa #islands Learn more about your ad choices. Are Greenland on the verge of joining CONCACAF and finally joining the FIFA international community? This and many other questions I put to the Danish Manager of the Greenlandic side. We discussed: - The unique culture of football on the Island - How he goes about selecting his squad under the unique challenges that the country provides - His aspirations for the team in the coming years - The importance of representing their country to the Greenlandic people It's a really interesting conversation covering an often uncovered topic of a team outside of the #greenland #greenlandfootball #footballpodcast #fifa #uefa #concacaf Learn more about your ad choices. On this special interview episode, I spoke to Philip O'Rourke about his upcoming book "Forgotten Football Clubs: Fifty Teams Across the World, Gone but Never Forgotten." We also touch on how a fan feels when their clubs ceases to exist, and the conflicting emotions of having to find another team to support. In our now annual tradition, we assembled to tackle the most bizarre football quiz questions imaginable!
On this episode of the podcast, I spoke to Shaul Adar, Israeli journalist about his book "On the Border: The Rise and Decline of the Most Political Club in the World." The book tells the story of Beitar Jerusalem, an infamous club both in Israel and globally. Famous for its racist fans, spearheaded by the ultra group "La Familia", the club has never fielded an Arab player. We spoke about how this club was able to court political influence in the Likud party of Netanyahu, how attempts to bring the club in a different direction have failed and what the club's story tells us about Israeli politics. We also spoke about the fallout from the documentary "Forever Pure", which shows how the fans reacted to an attempt by their former owner to bring in two Muslim players from Chechnya (spoiler alert: not good). It is a fascinating story into an area of the world's football culture that is not too often discussed, and Adar speak eloquently and thoughtfully on the subject. I really enjoyed both reading the book and discussing it with Shaul, and hope you enjoy it too! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
On this very special episode, we dived deep into the story of Chagos Islands football. Its an incredible story of how football can be used to represent a people who have had their rights ignored. The Chagos Islands are a tiny archipelago in the Indian Ocean, who's inhabitants were illegally removed in the early 70s. With many of the refugees descendants living in the UK, we examined how the representative football team is being used to raise awareness of the issue and the importance of giving people the opportunity to represent their own heritage. This episode includes two interviews, first with Sabrina Jean, the Chair of the UK Chagos Refugees Group and Jimmy Ferrar, the coach of the Chagos Islands National Team. It is a sobering and important story to tell, and we are delighted to be able to bring the story to you. This week I was joined by Gary Thacker, author of the book Beautiful Bridesmaids Dressed in Oranje. The book charts the unfulfilled glory of the Dutch National side. An exciting and thought provoking conversation for you on our newest podcast. In January this year Bohemian FC in Ireland made news around the world when they appointed Seán McCabe as the world's first climate justice officer at a football club. Having worked with climate issues for close to a decade, the partnership with the fan owned club with the aim to incorporate more climate focused policies into the club's plans. In a conversation that had the failed super league in mind, we talked about what it means for a community focused club to take the lead on this issue, the banter which followed his appointment, and Seán's hopes for what football can do to tackle the coming climate crisis. A fascinating conversation which tackled everything from the decline of trade union support to what football club's can do in their communities. In a lighter episode, we sat down with the guys from the Field of Screens pod to discuss the infamous FIFA propaganda film, United Passions. Recorded on the Monday of the ill fated SuperLeague attempt, we looked for some beauty in the story of a few men, who's only dream was that the whole world would play football by the same rules and regulations. Seriously. We discussed what exactly they were trying to achieve with this project, how Tim Roth got Sepp Blatter's walk down and whether commercial deals are in fact the most exciting aspect of the beautiful game. This week on the podcast, we are excited to be joined by Kyra Carusa, HB Køge and Ireland striker. Kyra is at the centre of an exciting project in Danish women's football, with the club rapidly developing the women's game, by opening up equal resources to the Men's team. With the team flying high at the top of the league at the time of recording, and Kyra currently the league's top scorer, they are seeking to become the first team outside of the big two of Brøndby and Fortuna Hjørring since 2001 to win the title. All this in their first season in the top flight, after being promoted to the first division last year. We spoke about what this project means to Kyra in practice, as well as adjusting to life in the small Danish town. Conor O'Keefe has not had a stereotypically normal football career so far. A very special episode as we spoke to the brilliant Israeli journalist Uri Levy about a fascinating story. Uri is the founder of the Middle Eastern football website babagol.net. He was the perfect person to talk to about a remarkable story of the takeover of Beitar Jerusalem by a UAE Sheikh, who's fan group La Familia are regularly viewed as having some of the world's most racist fans. (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/07/world/middleeast/israel-soccer-uae-beitar-jerusalem.html) The club has never had an Arab player and the vicious reaction of the fans to the purchase in 2013 of 2 Muslim Chechens was documented in the documentary forever pure. Uri told us how this incredible takeover story has gone down, how everything does not appear to be as it seems, as well as gave his insights on the view on the controversial Qatar World Cup from the region. How does it feel when your first game for your country results in a 31-0 loss and a World record that stands to this day? You keep trying despite all the odds. At least, that's what you do if you are Nicky Salapu, our guest for this week's podcast. We spoke to him about that harrowing Australia game and how he reacted afterwards. We asked him what has kept him going through an almost 20-year career for his country, playing for the ultimate footballing underdog and Nicky explained what it felt like committing yourself at a personal cost to keep playing and fighting for your country, through all the pain. And finally, we found out how it felt when finally the curse was broken, and he experienced victory playing for his country in 2015. Along the way, we asked about his experiences of the Next Goal Wins documentary, how Thomas Rongen was as a coach and how he still dreams of a rematch against Australia. We have all kind of heard the story of Australia vs American Samoa in 2001. Of the team at the bottom of the FIFA World Rankings so bad that they set a record that still stands for most goals conceded in a single game. But as with all great football stories, once you scratch the surface, there appears so much more than what meets the eye. This week on the show we dove deep into this infamous game from 2001. To accompany the game we watched the brilliant documentary Next Goal Wins, which charts the attempts a decade later under a charismatic coach of the Samoan's attempts to win their first official games. This is an amazing story which shows all that is good about the beautiful game, as the ultimate underdogs battle for redemption on the global stage. With two Germans on the pod, we watched their country's first world cup win, as West Germany pulled off one of the biggest World Cup shocks. Along the way we battled with a 1954 World Cup quiz, heard one of the most remarkable stories about a footballing curse and found out about the manager who gave up on his team to read a racing newspaper from the stands mid match. South Korea's run to the 2002 World Cup Semi-Finals was clouded by accusations of biased refereeing to help the host nation progress. In particular, their last 16 match against Italy caused international outcry as the Italians alleged a FIFA stitch-up perpetrated by referee Moreno. But is this a case of the reaction having no relation to the reality?
