On this episode of the podcast, I spoke to Shaul Adar, Israeli journalist about his book "On the Border: The Rise and Decline of the Most Political Club in the World." The book tells the story of Beitar Jerusalem, an infamous club both in Israel and globally. Famous for its racist fans, spearheaded by the ultra group "La Familia", the club has never fielded an Arab player. We spoke about how this club was able to court political influence in the Likud party of Netanyahu, how attempts to bring the club in a different direction have failed and what the club's story tells us about Israeli politics. We also spoke about the fallout from the documentary "Forever Pure", which shows how the fans reacted to an attempt by their former owner to bring in two Muslim players from Chechnya (spoiler alert: not good). It is a fascinating story into an area of the world's football culture that is not too often discussed, and Adar speak eloquently and thoughtfully on the subject. I really enjoyed both reading the book and discussing it with Shaul, and hope you enjoy it too! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In December 2020, an Israeli football club made worldwide headlines. The news that a UAE royal had bought 50 per cent of Beitar's shares shook Israel and the football world. Beitar, proclaimed by some of its own fans as 'the most racist club in the country', is a club like no other in Israel. While Israeli football as a whole is a space where Israelis of all ethnicities and foreigners can co-exist, Beitar won't even sign a Muslim player for fear of its own far-right supporters' group, La Familia. In this episode I talk to Shaul Adar the author of On the Border a the fascinating tale of a club that began as a sports movement of a liberal national Zionism party and became an overt symbol of right-wing views, Mizrahi identity and eventually hardcore racism and nationalism. With the author we explored explored the radicalisation of Beitar and the fight for the soul of the club between the racists and open-minded fans. Founded in 1936, the club took its name from a Zionist organization set up in 1923 by students in the capital of Latvia, Riga, following a visit by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the Zionist Revisionist and founder of the paramilitary group Irgun. For thirty years, under the British Mandate, impoverished young Mizrahim (Jews from Arab countries) had kicked a ball around Jerusalem's Musrara neighbourhood with Arab friends. The war of 1948 radically changed that. Subsequent events sharpened the divide, leading to the unrepentant racism of La Familia, Beitar “ultras” who began by making monkey noises at a player from Cameroon and graduated to chants threatening death to Arabs. Employing violence and intimidation, they ensured no Muslim could play for Beitar.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/jerusalemunplugged. Beitar Jerusalem Vs Hapoel Kfar Saba |Israel Premier League | Monday 5.4.21 19:15 CETIn this episode, I picked one match from tomorrow’s matches and shows how I use the bet builder to place a good bet on this match. The method that I am using for this Bet builder bet combined from picking the correct match result winner and number of goals that will be in this match.I always use 2 or 3 combinations in my bet builder bets. NEVER more.In this match, I know that both teams have tons of problems. Both teams sacked their coaches 2 weeks ago. But, with one big difference. While the home team decided to give the position to Yossi Mizrachi – Big name in Beitar Jerusalem. Former head coach and former Capitan of Beitar as a player. In the away team’s side, the situation is different. The owner sacked his 10th coach in the last 3 years. No one wants to come and coaching Hapoel Kfar Saba. From two main reasons:1) The are the worst team in Israel. Their squad is weak – 75% that they will be relegated this season2) The owner of the club is not OK with coaches – he thinks that he knows it allSo, Hapoel Kfar Saba, the away team are training with their young coach assistant, Ravid Gazal. Following this reason, and the fact that the squad of the home team is better. The home team will win this match. Moreover, both teams played the same match 2 weeks ago. It was in the regular season. The home team Beitar Jerusalem beat Hapoel Kfar Saba 2-1. For a home win the odds are 2.00. So, I decided to combine it with the bet builder bet.I know that both have major problems with their defense. They both conceded 1.25 goals per `match from the beginning of the season (only 2 clubs are worse than them in this parameter). Now, both teams don’t play with their best CBs following injuries. The home team, Beitar Jerusalem conceded at least a one goal in their last 6 matches and the away team Hapoel Kfar Saba concede at least on goal in 9 from their 11 last matches. With this fact, I will add this bet for the bet builder combination: both teams to score in full match – YES. Now the bet is looking like this:- Match result: Home Win- Both teams to score in the Full Match – YESThis bet builder combination provides odds of 4.754.75 – it means that the bookmakers give 21% chance for this probability to happen. I don’t think that it will happen for 100%. From my calculation. This can happen in a probability of 40% (it happened 2 weeks ago as I mentioned before). 19% difference is an amazing difference for odds of 4.75 To summarize the combination Method of Match result + goals:You pick the team that you think will win and the add to it the most likely situation that can happen from goals aspect.

A very special episode as we spoke to the brilliant Israeli journalist Uri Levy about a fascinating story. Uri is the founder of the Middle Eastern football website babagol.net. He was the perfect person to talk to about a remarkable story of the takeover of Beitar Jerusalem by a UAE Sheikh, who's fan group La Familia are regularly viewed as having some of the world's most racist fans. (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/07/world/middleeast/israel-soccer-uae-beitar-jerusalem.html) The club has never had an Arab player and the vicious reaction of the fans to the purchase in 2013 of 2 Muslim Chechens was documented in the documentary forever pure. Uri told us how this incredible takeover story has gone down, how everything does not appear to be as it seems, as well as gave his insights on the view on the controversial Qatar World Cup from the region. It was a fascinating discussion bringing together culture, racism and society. If you have enjoyed the podcast please leave a rating or review, follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date on our coming releases and tell a friend about the show. My guest is Sophia Solomon, a PhD student in political science at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, Israel. Her current research focuses on civil-military relations in Britain, Canada and Israel, with a particular focus on so-called “shooting soldiers”, i.e. soldiers who killed suspected terrorists after they were captured. However, Sophia and I talk about her previous research, for her MA thesis, which focuses on the Israeli football club Beitar Jerusalem, its infamous ultras/hooligans La Familia, and the connections to and significance for the far right in Israel.
The matches of the podcast:Hapoel Kfar Saba – Hapoel Tel Aviv | Premier league | Saturday (29.8) 19:30 CETThis is the first match of the season. Hapoel Kfar Saba the home team kept most of their squad from last year. While, Hapoel Tel Aviv the away team changed most of their squad. They have new goalkeeper and new central back. In the Pre-season tournament, The Toto Cup. The home team finished 8th and the Away ream finished 10th. Both team did not performed well. The away team scored one goal in four games. Both teams won only one time against bottom league teams. This year both teams will fight against relegation. They will not win a lot. It feels like they do not know how to win. From the odds that the bookmakers give to this match, it looks like Hapoel Tel-Aviv, the away team has an advantage. However, it is a fiction. I believe that both teams prefer not to lose this match. It will end with a Draw. If the odds for under goals were good. I would suggest going on under goals too. But, the Odds are low.Hapoel Haifa – Beitar Jerusalem | Premier league | Sunday (30.8) 19:15 CETUntil yesterday, the away team Beitar Jerusalem was total favorite to win this match. In my option. They had a good Pre Season tournament. They finished third with 2 wins and 2 draws in four matches. They did not concede any goal in this 4 matches. While the Home team, Hapoel Haifa finished in the last place in the Pre-Season tournament. With 1 draw and three loses. The bookies gave high odds (2.10) for an Away win. This is a very good odd. If you take in your mind that there is no effect to the Home venue when there is no crowd on the stands. But!! , two days ago, Beitar Jerusalem lost in the first round of the Europa League to a small club from Albania. The owner got crazy and fired the coach. Following this act, the general manager decided to finish his part in the club. With no coach and general manager. There is a big chaos in the club. I believe that even the chaos that the away team have. They still will win this match. The player will want to comfort their fanatic crowed and their Boss. The away team is a crazy club and this kind of incident can give them the power to win. Not with a great football, but they will win it. Hapoel Nof Hagalil – Beitar Tel Aviv | National league | Monday (31.8) 18:00 CETThis is the match to put your high stakes in this episode. The home team Hapoel Nof Hagalil finished first in the second division Pre-Season tournament with four wins from four matches with 11-0 goals difference. They won 3-0 in the finals last week. The home have a crazy squad and the really believe they can win the league and play next year in the Israeli Premier league. The away team Beitar Tel Aviv has a brand new squad, young squad. They finished 4th in the Pre-Season tournament with 2-1-1 The bookmakers give 2.13 to a Home win. Very high odds. 2.13 it means that the bookmakers give 47% probability for a Home team. I believe that the probability is closer to 65%-70% for a Home win.
Hapoel Beer Sheva – Maccabi Tel Aviv | Israeli Premier League | Tuesday (7.7) 19:00 CETMaccabi Tel Aviv won the championship 3 matches ago. They beat Maccabi Haifa in an away game with half the squad not dressed up. A day before this match, their coach announced that he would leave the team after this match. However, it is something that all knew for weeks. The achievement "Full Season with No Lose" is one match ahead. Only one club in Israel made it. Maccabi wants to get it too. To make this season historical.Everybody in Hapoel Beer Sheva are thinking only on the Cup Final that will be played in six days. They have not win the Israeli Cup since 1997. In this match, they will keep their legs and will not want to receive a red card. That a player will not miss the Cup Final.I have seen that the bookmakers give 2.00 for an Away win. 50% chance that Maccabi will win is very low. I think is closer to 75%.I would go on an average stake on an away win.Beitar Jerusalem – Maccabi Haifa | Israeli Premier League | Tuesday (7.7) 19:00 CETMaccabi Haifa come to this match after losing the fourth time this season to Maccabi Tel Aviv, that played with almost their 2nd team.In the last days, they are talking and thinking about only 2 two things:1) The distance that they have from Maccabi Tel Aviv in a perspective of the next season.2) When the management will declare on Barak Bachar as the new coach.I think that they just wait to play this match and finish the season. They will not come with a focus in this match. Adinionaly, they come with no without any motivation. This is a classic combination to lose this match. While in Beitar Jerusalem. They won 3-0 against their nemesis. Therefore, they will come with a good mood for this match. This match is important for many entities in the club. and to beat Maccabi Haifa will give a good push for next season.Because of the reason that I am no 100% sure, that Beitar will win. I will go on Double chance bet 1X - home win or a draw. The odds for that bit low. Therefore, I will make the odds higher with the Bet Builder (2.05)- Match result - Double chance 1X - home win or a draw +- Over 0 goals in the match for both teams combined+ - Over 6 corners in the match for both teams combined.I believe this match will be open. There will be goals in this match. I truly believe that seven corners for this match is under the average.
Hapoel Haifa, Maccabi Haifa, Beitar Jerusalem.
Peter Vermes has added another piece to his midfield ahead of the 2020 season with the arrival of Gadi Kinda. In this episode Cody, Robert, and Thad cover all your questions about the 25-year-old out of Beitar Jerusalem. As it often goes, there has been some confusion around the terms of the deal. Is Kinda here on loan or is it just a straight transfer? His agent and former coach have referred to the deal as a transfer, while Sporting Kansas City says it is a loan. We also talk about the money and whether he is a Designated Player or not. But how important are those labels anymore anyway? Vermes sees Kinda as a box-to-box, #8 midfielder who possesses the strict defensive standards he requires from his players, while being dangerous going forward as well. So where will he play? Will he fight Roger Espinoza for playing time? Robert wonders what this means for the plethora of young talent with SKC and if it will be another year where the likes of Felipe Hernandez & Gianluca Busio aren't able to get enough first team minutes. The move gives Vermes options on all lines now. They can be adaptable as is required by the league now. We look at different ways Kinda can be used and who he might play with. The question that will always be asked.... is he worth the money? The league has changed and what it takes to get a younger player with potential costs a pretty penny. SKCII have also added a key piece. Kaveh Rad featured heavily last year and now the 18-year-old academy kid got a professional contract. Thad explains that his path could set the example needed to keep prospects from going to play in the NCAA. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Storied and crowned soccer club Beitar Jerusalem was for decades a pillar of the Israeli right-wing and an often-extreme symbol of Israel’s lurch towards the right as well as its`` ever more uncompromising attitude towards an equitable peace with the Palestinians and approach towards its Israeli Palestinian minority. Today, in an anti-cyclical development, Beitar Jerusalem, with its acquisition by technology entrepreneur Moshe Hogeg, is at the forefront of the fight against racism, including anti-Arab sentiment and Islamophobia.

When Israeli journalist Maya Zinshtein took on a four-day assignment to cover the arrival of two foreign players to a local soccer club, she had no idea that it would turn into a year-long making of a feature documentary that dramatically reveals the skeletons in her own country’s closet. But this was no ordinary soccer team—and this is certainly not your average sports documentary. The team at the center of the film is Beitar Jerusalem, which had been historically known for the right wing politics and even racist tendencies of its fan base. In fact, It was the only team in Israel’s premier league never to sign an Arab player. When two Muslim players from Chechnya were brought onto the team, the resulting backlash exposed the ugliest parts of Israeli society, and threatened to tear the team and country apart. Rarely does a documentary—especially about something as apparently innocuous as soccer—expose so many layers of one society, from race to class to politics to economics. But it didn’t come without Zinshtein’s own battles. In her conversation with No Film School's Liz Nord, she is very candid about how she overcame the challenges she faced making the film, especially in trying to convince people to let her turn vérité cameras on them in the midst of personal and national crises.
The year is 2012 and Beitar Jerusalem, the favored soccer team of Israel's right wing, is on its way to its first national title in years. Quickly climbing the rankings from week to week, the team can almost taste the sweet flavor of victory and national pride. However, Beitar's owner, Arkady Gaydamak, has other plans for the team - plans that will shock the players, the fans, the entire Israeli soccer community and the nation as a whole. Stretched to its limits along racial lines, the story of Beitar Jerusalem is a sort of microcosm of Israeli society. The team prides itself on its racially pure past and present roster and its right-wing Zionist political alignment. Maya Zinshtein, director of the film “Forever Pure” which follows the team through its most dramatic crisis, joins 2NJB to talk Israeli soccer, politics and filmmaking. Plus great music by Quarter to Africa!
We look at the sexual abuse scandal that has engulfed gymnastics in the USA. We hear from former gymnast Rachael Denhollander on waiving her right to anonymity to accuse former USA national team doctor Dr Larry Nassar of sexual abuse. We also hear from John Manley the lawyer representing two gymnasts, including an Olympian, who are suing Gymnastics USA for their failure to act on allegations brought to them about Dr Nasser. Mark Alesia one of the investigators from the Indianapolis Star, the paper that broke the story, also joins us. "I feared for my own safety" The documentary 'Forever Pure' centres on Israel's most notorious football club, Beitar Jerusalem. The film follows the team, its fans and owners after signing two Muslim players from Chechnya. The first Muslims to play for the team... The angry reaction of fans shocked the country with director Maya Zinshtein receiving death threats. Acting the part of captain Ed Rolston had two dreams growing up, to play international rugby and to be a star of the big screen. There was a time when neither seemed attainable. He left professional rugby before his career ever really got going, but now he is the captain of the Hong Kong national side and the first half of his ambitious double is complete. So what happened to his attempt to conquer Hollywood? Sporting Witness: It is 60 years since a love affair between a Czechoslovak discus thrower and an American hammer thrower made the headlines at the Olympic Games in Melbourne. The discus thrower was Olga Fikotova, who won gold in her event but was then ostracised by Czech officials for starting a relationship with a westerner. At the height of the Cold War, Fikotova was treated as a potential defector and virtually ignored on her return to Prague despite winning Czechoslovakia’s only gold of the Olympics. In this week's Assignment David Goldblatt travels to Israel to meet the fans of Beitar Jerusalem football club. As you'll hear in this programme the fans pride themselves on their extreme nationalist views and anti-arab chanting at matches. Beitar fans boast that an Arab never has and never will play for the club. Now under the ownership of flamboyant Russian Billionaire Arkadi Gaydamak Beitar is top of the Israeli league, but the behaviour of its hard-core fans continues to cause trouble. Since this programme was recorded, Beitar fans have been punished for a pitch invasion, and are now banned from their own stadium for the rest of the season. Beitar remain top of the Israeli league.
