This week I go in depth on one of the best value regions of Portugal -- Alentejo. These wines are mainly blends and they are as easy on the palate as they are on the wallet -- a perfect combo! Photo: Vineyards in Alentejo outside of Évora. Credit: WFNP Located in southern Portugal, a two hour drive east of Lisbon, Alentejo is huge -- representing almost one-third of the Iberian nation. Although in the past the region was known only as the breadbasket of Portugal and as the world's largest supplier of cork (nearly half of the world's corks come from Alentejo's cork trees), today the region is experiencing a wine renaissance. After a rocky history, Alentejo has grown and its reputation has expanded with it. Known for fruity, lush and plush red blends (about 75% of the wine) of grapes like Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez (Tempranillo), Trincadeira, Alfrochero, and Castelão, there are some higher end versions that sometimes contain Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah as well. The whites are in the minority and are fruity, soft, yet balanced blends as well. The tropical, tangerine noted and soft Antão Vaz is Alentejo's most important white with Arinto used for acidity, Fernão Pires for aroma and soft textures and Roupeiro for aroma as well. Hello, Catholic Pilgrims. Today's letter is a continuation of what happened on October 15th. Because I'm a history nut, you get another history lesson today. Mother Cabrini is going to describe steaming past “Fortune Island.” This is Long Cay Island located in the Bahamas. It's a tiny thing and today it only has roughly around 50 people living on it. It was named “Fortune Island” by Christopher Columbus because he found a conch shell there. I'll link a website to Long Cay in the show notes. Mother then describes passing another island called Castel or Castle Island. This island is directly south of Long Cay. It doesn't look inhabited today from what I can see, but it does have a lighthouse that reportedly was the hideout location of pirates looking to attack ships that passed by. Why am I telling you all this? Well, I think it's super cool and I think it puts us back in time with her. She is describing real places that she saw and I think that helps connect us to her through all the years between us. Ahead of United Nations (UN) International Women's Day, the national STEM Teacher Internship (STInt) programme, coordinated by Dublin City University (DCU), is urging teachers and businesses to get involved and inspire the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) leaders. One primary teacher will impact 1,000 learners in their career, while one secondary teacher will impact 5,000. Now in its 10th year, 310 teachers have engaged with the STInt programme to date and their involvement has the potential to impact over 1.2 million learners over the course of their careers. The STInt programme is supported by Skillnet Ireland, along with Research Ireland, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science; Connecting Women in Technology; the 30% Club; CASTel and Intel. The initiative provides primary and post-primary teachers with paid summer internships in STEM roles, in a wide variety of industries across Ireland. It helps student and early-career teachers gain real-world insights and equips them with the knowledge of what it is like to work in STEM in Ireland right now. Dr Eilish McLoughlin, Associate Professor DCU School of Physical Sciences and founder of the STInt programme said: "Encouraging young people, particularly female students, to engage in STEM from an early age is crucial for inspiring them to pursue future careers in Ireland's growing science and tech sectors. Over the past decade, the STInt programme has provided unique opportunities to over 310 teachers to experience STEM roles and careers and empower them to design innovative learning experiences for young learners based on real-world contexts. More STEM graduates are needed to tackle societal challenges, such as, climate change, energy, health and issues we have yet to imagine. Organisations and businesses are strongly encouraged to collaborate with the STInt programme and help shape a brighter future for individuals and societies." Skillnet Ireland, the national talent development agency, has been a programme partner since 2023, providing support for the STInt programme to contribute to a lasting impact on the future workforce. Tracey Donnery, Director of Policy & Communications at Skillnet Ireland, said: "The mission of the STInt programme reflects Skillnet Ireland's commitment to building a diverse and highly skilled STEM workforce that will drive Ireland's future economy. With industries like biotechnology, engineering, and AI shaping the country's economy, empowering young people in STEM ensures a more inclusive, competitive workforce and inspires the next generation of leaders and innovators." The UN is dedicating International Women's Day 2025 to a call for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all women. Central to this vision is empowering the next generation -particularly young women and adolescent girls - to act as catalysts for lasting change. Celine Fitzgerald, Interim CEO of Research Ireland, said: "We are delighted to support STInt through the Research Ireland Discover Programme, providing teachers across both primary and post-primary education with the unique experience of a STEM internship in industry. El Papa Francisco celebró la liturgia de este 2 de noviembre para la Conmemoración de los Fieles Difuntos en el Cementerio Laurentino, en la zona de Castel di Decima. Antes de la celebración, se detuvo en el «Jardín de los Ángeles», zona dedicada a la sepultura de los niños que no han visto la luz, donde hizo oración ante las lápidas rodeadas de juegos y estatuillas y saludó a un padre que perdió a su hija. No hubo homilía en la Misa, sino un momento de meditación y oración. Los restos fueron hallados en julio pasado, pero fue a finales de septiembre cuando las autoridades uruguayas anunciaron haberlo identificado. Se trata de Luis Eduardo Arigón Castel, un militante comunista desaparecido durante la última dictadura militar en el país sudamericano, hace 47 años. Luis Eduardo estaba casado con Sara y era padre de dos hijas, Sabina y Estrella, que esperaron siempre su regreso. Entrevistada por RFI, Sabina reacciona cuando se identificaron los restos de su padre: “Me estremeció porque cada vez que aparece una persona, todos los que tenemos algún familiar nos provoca como una especie de terremoto.”Un terremoto que cierra 47 años de búsqueda desde ese 14 de junio de 1977 cuando miembros de las fuerzas conjuntas llegaron a la casa de Sabina:“Lo llevaron preso de su casa, de mi casa, donde vivíamos, en la madrugada lo vinieron a buscar un equipo de militares y de personas de civil; bueno, se lo llevaron y no dijeron a dónde lo llevaban. Mi madre les preguntó y le dijeron que iba a tener noticias y que quedaba a disposición de las fuerzas conjuntas y desde ese día hasta el día de hoy nunca más supimos nada.“Tuvimos digamos una información de lo que podía haber pasado con él cuando el presidente Batlle -estoy hablando acerca del año 2000-, cuando el presidente Batlle, el tercer presidente democrático, abre un poco la puerta para darle cabida a este tema y genera lo que lo que se llamó la comisión para la paz.”Arigón fue torturado y desaparecido; sus restos fueron hallados en Batallón 14 del ejército, cerca de Montevideo. Ricardo Perciballe, es el fiscal especializado en delitos de lesa humanidad: “En este batallón en particular se encontraron cuatro y de esos cuatro dos pertenecen este año y el año anterior. Que era Amelia Sanjurjo, o sea Luis Eduardo Arigón y Amelia Sanjurjo, tienen una misma lógica, de enterramientos, porque ellos fueron víctimas, ambos del centro clandestino de detención y torturas, que se conoce como La Tablada y ambos fueron del año 77 y precisamente en ese centro clandestino hay más detenidos, no sólo en el 77, sino en el año 81 y 82.“Por eso, si nosotros podemos establecer un patrón de enterramiento, podemos primero afirmar que el Batallón de Infantería 14 se utilizó como centro clandestino. Eso está absolutamente acreditado porque cuatro hallazgos nos muestran éso; y segundo, que nos permitiría establecer la lógica de enterramiento de aquellas personas que desaparecieron en ese centro clandestino de la Tablada. Y en ese centro restan ubicar por lo menos a 5 personas más, por eso es una zona sensible que se está trabajando y es probable entonces que podamos encontrar otros cuerpos en ese lugar.”En Uruguay hay registros de 197 personas desaparecidas por el estado entre 1968 y 1985. Una buena parte de ellos fueron detenidos en Argentina en el marco del plan Cóndor. Hasta ahora se ha logrado identificar a una treintena, ocho de ellos encontrados en Uruguay.

Enter developer Tour De Pizza and their love letter to Wario Land, Sonic the Hedgehog and all manner of 1990s cartoons, Pizza Tower. That set of inspirations creates a high bar to reach, but Pizza Tower clears that bar by several pepperoni lengths. It's fast, it's fluid, it allows you to create your own level of challenge, the animation captures that older cartoon style, and the music is incredible. Pizza Tower was a treat to play. He completed his Ph.D. in the history of science at Johns Hopkins University in 2021 after earning an M.Sc. in Physics at the University of Lisbon. Previously, he was a Research Fellow at Harvard University's Villa I Tatti in Florence and at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. He has spoken about Galileo, Copernicus, and science and religion to broad audiences in the United States and Europe. His first book, The Traveling Anatomist, uses Nicolaus Steno as a tour guide for science, medicine, and religion in seventeenth-century Europe. His writing has appeared in places like the Wall Street Journal and Scientific American, as well as in research journals such as Notes and Records of the Royal Society, and Annals of Science.
