video: https://youtu.be/9P4ki0yBVb0 This week in Linux, we've got a solid mix of kernel news, desktop progress, application releases, and even a little bit drama thrown in for good measure. Several Linux LTS kernels are getting extended support, COSMIC Desktop 1.0.8 has landed with more polish, Firefox 148 is out with some notable changes, and the Ladybird browser project is making a big move by adding Rust to its development strategy. On top of that, Discord has officially delayed its global age verification rollout after significant backlash, so we'll break down what happened there and what it means going forward. video: https://youtu.be/2188McQBnHg This week in Linux, was a HUGE week for Linux news and it was also a HUGE week for me because today marks the 10th anniversary of TuxDigital. That's right I started TuxDigital back in 2016 so it's just crazy to think I've been making content for 10 years. Also KDE has a brand new version of their desktop with Plasma 6.6. We've also got a new version of Linux game manager, Lutris. Then we've got an update from the Asahi Linux project for their work on getting Linux on Apple hardware. Later in the show, we've got everyone's favorite with Legal News, although seriously this is good news about Valve winning a lawsuit against a Patent Troll. video: https://youtu.be/qMIdMJnqNkE This week in Linux, we have a brand new version of the Linux kernel with Linux 6.19. Discord is in the news this week because they decided to roll out age verification to the entire world and received a lot of backlash for it... which is very much deserved. Linux Mint is talking about changing how they do releases of their distros and how they might do fewer of them. Then we'll take a look at the upcoming KDE Linux distro and what they've got cooking in their immutable oven. video: https://youtu.be/5T1Frk70LTQ Comment on the TWIL Forum (https://thisweekinlinux.com/forum) This week in Linux, we have a lot of news to cover. We have some good news and some bad news. Well, people like to start with bad news first, I guess. So there is a fiasco happening with Secure Boot and how it may be affecting Linux users. Also, the EU is proposing a law that is pretty close to being passed that is very scary and a step towards mass surveillance. We'll talk about that. Then also we have some good news and that the Pebble watches are back and we have some beta releases from Linux Mint and Ubuntu Touch as well as SyncThing is back, which is a really cool tool to sync your files across multiple devices. video: https://youtu.be/ucGrNLdsql0 Comment on the TWIL Forum (https://thisweekinlinux.com/forum) This week in Linux, we've got a bit of bad news from Intel as they abruptly ended Clear Linux out of no where and Arch Linux warned users that malware was found in the AUR. It's not all bad this week though because Wayback is back on the show with the first preview release for keeping X11 desktops alive in our future Wayland powered world. Plus according to one source, Linux usage is even higher than we already thought it was. A couple of episodes ago I reported that we broke the 5% threshold on the US desktop market based on StatCounter data but according to one source it's already climbed passed 6%. What source you ask? The analytics of U.S. federal government websites. Speaking of governments, GitHub is trying to get EU lawmakers to scale Germany's Sovereign Tech Fund into a EU wide program to fund critical open‑source projects. video: https://youtu.be/GH18mp-2d90 Comment on the TWIL Forum (https://thisweekinlinux.com/forum) This week in Linux is packed! It's an extra long episode. So if you were wanting more and more TWIL, then you're going to get it this week because Steam Summer Sale is here and it is torching bank accounts. Fedora developers are talking about getting rid of 32-bit support and there's a little bit of controversy around that. We're going to break all of that down. Also, Fairphone 6 has been announced and it comes with kernel patches, an upstream Linux kernel on day one. Firefox 140 has arrived as the new ESR, and there's also some exciting news coming in the next release of Firefox as well. And later in the show, KDE's Wayland wave is continuing to grow to about 70% of users these days. Kubuntu drops X11 by default, and KDE is working on a slick first run wizard. video: https://youtu.be/F_imR-7E9ps Comment on the TWIL Forum (https://thisweekinlinux.com/forum) This week in Linux, was just crazy... I just got back from the Red Hat Summit last night, now I'm making a jam packed episode of TWIL with stuff from the Red Hat Summit like them announcing RHEL 10. While I was out of time, we entered into the Twilight Zone because Microsoft apparently open sourced WSL, kind of. Mozilla announced they are shutting down some services. And the giant guitar company Fender, announced a new music creation tool that, yep, it supports Linux. With the walking through airports, a convention center, and the streets of Boston...my feet hurt but you want TWIL right so I'm powering through to bring you all of this and more on This Week in Linux, the weekly news show that keeps you up to date with what's going on in the Linux and Open Source world. video: https://youtu.be/PtP_jOlAIHE Comment on the TWIL Forum (https://thisweekinlinux.com/forum) This week in Linux, we have a lot of cool stuff to talk about. First, we're going to talk about the future of KDE Plasma. Then we're going to go into the future of OpenSUSE because Leap 16 beta has been released and the final version will be coming out this year. Then we'll also have a new version of Mozilla Firefox. And also we have some interesting news from the Oregon State University because there's some potential risk of closure of their Open Source Lab, which would be a shame. And then we're also going to talk about Redis because they're back in the news this week because they want to redo with Open Source. It's kind of ridiculous even. We have huge distro releases from Ubuntu with Ubuntu 25.04, Fedora 42, and Manjaro 25. If that wasn't enough for a stacked episode, LXQt desktop has released version 2.2 and the KDE team have released new versions of all their apps in the KDE Gears app suite. There's so much I couldn't fit at all on the show. And even one of the things I wanted to fit in the show, it's by itself too big to be in the show. So I'm going to split that off into a separate video. And there's also a new release of KDE Plasma 6.3. There's a new website for the GNOME project. GIMP 3.0 has another release candidate with RC3. video: https://youtu.be/v7ZLEAxoW14 Comment on the TWIL Forum (https://thisweekinlinux.com/forum) This week in Linux, we have a lot to talk about with the Linux kernel getting, or maybe not getting, Rusty. There's a little bit of drama there. Also, the Void Linux project has a new release of their distribution. EA has provided an update regarding Apex Legends and Linux. It's not great news, but we're gonna talk about it. There's also a tiny Linux kernel tweak that could save 30% on power use for data centers. AMD announced something called the AMDGPU Composition Stack and it has a ton of potential for positively impacting the Linux desktop. Intel announced a modular PC idea they are trying to push that could positively impact everyone even including the environment. Then we got the latest release of SDL which will positively impact gamers and so many more. video: https://youtu.be/qAHxogc8QTc Comment on the TWIL Forum (https://thisweekinlinux.com/forum) This week in Linux, we have a brand new version of the Linux kernel to talk about. Well, maybe. Technically, the 6.13 release is not until this Sunday, and I'm recording this before Sunday, so we're just going to roll the dice, and hopefully it doesn't get delayed. Also, we have some distro news this week to talk about with a new release from Linux Mint, MX Linux, and OpenSUSE. We also have some security news related to the rsync project, as well as a big flaw that was found in the Linux kernel. We're gonna talk about all of this and so much more on This Week in Linux, your weekly news show that keeps you up to date with what's going on in the Linux and Open Source world.
