Folks may be familiar with our HalloWing M4 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4300) fancy eyeballs demo code - it's very dependent on the wired-up hardware. But of course, with our new round displays (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6178), we wanted to try wiring one up to see how it looks. That ended up being 2 days of hacking, but at least it's done now - we've refactored the code to support any SAMD51 board and any SPITFT display. It's not ready for publication yet; We juuuuuust got this working like 3 minutes ago... We want to abstract out the SAMD51-dependant parts so it could be run on chips like the ESP32 or RP2350 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6055)! On my flight to NYC last week, I casually asked if there were any events happening in the city while I was there. Reggie, who you may remember from his New Hardware video, and as the person who coined the term “indie-pilled”, replied that we should do one of our own. So we did. Thankfully we had our cameras in tow and were able to record the conversation. It turned into a nearly 2hr Q&A on all things indie, the current state of venture, the evolution of seed, the role of secondaries in venture, and some funny untold indie lore. In the video, Reggie mentions a piece he recently wrote titled “Lies My Teacher Told Me”, which set some timely context for this event. From the essay:"The point of this is short. The new thing has to look like the new thing, which makes it hard to pattern match to the previous new thing. But pattern matching is at the heart of de-risking. This creates a weird loop of advice. The previous advice of zero interest rates and Snapchat as the last big thing for consumer software was to grow at all costs / monetize later / find novel behavior. Nikita Bier showed all of this was wrong with Gas App. Monetize directly in the V1. De-risk through known behavior. Growth inputs must be advantageously proportional to the monetization in the V1. There wouldn't be a single VC that could share this advice. As a result, we've only had 1 US consumer internet win since Snapchat."My sense is that that's why indie is resonating so strongly this time around. As we wrote in our FACTS section:"The game has changed. ZIRP-era playbooks of VC treadmills, pump and dump schemes, and growth at all costs have aged like milk. The future belongs to real builders, building real businesses. There's a time-tested playbook for building generational companies — less time fundraising, more time building, with a focus on the fundamentals. Most of the iconic companies of the past, think Amazon, Microsoft, and Google as well as emerging leaders like Midjourney, Vanta, and Zapier, have followed a similar playbook. We've built our firm from the ground up with this playbook in mind."This is the future we're been building towards, and it seems to be hitting an inflection point. Thanks to Reggie and the team at Earshot for hosting us and making this happen on short notice. Hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed having this conversation.

First we have an update on an old startup as Worldcoin changes its name to World and redesigns its Orb to be more than just an eyeball scanner but also now an identification service called Deep Face. Repeat the satanic mantra after me: World, Orb, Deep Face. We then sit back as Prof Ed walks us through an in-depth investigation into how Uber and Lyft used driver lockouts—preventing them from logging on, seemingly at random and for long periods—as a cynical response to minimum pay laws in New York City. This regulatory arbitrage and brutal optimization resulted in significant impacts on drivers and major savings for the companies. ••• Sam Altman's Worldcoin Gets a New Name, and New Hardware https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-10-17/sam-altman-s-worldcoin-gets-a-new-name-and-new-hardware ••• How Uber and Lyft Used a Loophole to Deny NYC Drivers Millions in Pay https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2024-uber-lyft-nyc-drivers-pay-lockouts/?srnd=phx-technology Subscribe to hear more analysis and commentary in our premium episodes every week! https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills Hosted by Jathan Sadowski (www.x.com/jathansadowski) and Edward Ongweso Jr. (www.x.com/bigblackjacobin). This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we discuss Nintendo's big new hardware announcement - and no, it's not Switch 2. Despite months of frenzied rumour that Nintendo was ready to reveal its next-generation Switch, the company instead revealed... Alarmo, a new interactive alarm clock. It costs £90/$100, and is currently only available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Alarmo looks fun enough, and I love that Nintendo has wrong-footed everyone's expectations with a left-field new product once again. (Remember Ring Fit? Remember Labo?) On the other - what exactly is the point? Apart from the fact that alarm clocks are found on every smart device you already own, why is Nintendo launching this specific product? And why now? Joining me this week are Eurogamer's Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy to discuss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nearly a couple of years back - as I saw ChatGPT - just like everyone else who had been in the AI industry for the last decade, it was super clear that it was a turning point. To be sure, from within the industry, from GPT-2 onward, it was clear that something massive was happening, as for the first time (even if at the time the AI still generated a lot of non-sense), the paradigm was changing, as the output wasn't any longer stitching together of existing phrases, from a text the AI had somehow found. But it generated it independently, unsupervised, by “making sense” of the underlying text. That was mind-blowing!When ChatGPT came out, it was only the confirmation that the underlying model (GPT-3) with a new technique (InstructGPT) could be a game changer. It's nearly two years after the fact, and we've reached a point where tools like NotebookLM are so impressive that it's hard to imagine what's coming next!Indeed, the AI-generated this whole podcast episode after feeding it into our book AI Business Models! Before we get to it and understand its implications, remember you can download the AI Business Models book, if you subscribed to our premium newsletter. We invited our friend, Reggie James, to help unpack what's happening in hardware and break down what's behind many of the recent negative viral product review videos currently hitting the internet. Reggie is a longtime friend to indie and prolific advisor to many of this new crop of hardware startups in market and in development. He cuts right to the point with strong opinions and spicy takes that may not be obvious to the casual observer. You'll also hear a view on technology and culture that extends far beyond any single device. In this one, we touch on —The disconnect between the world of venture capital/tech startups and the reality of many creatives/builders who don't view capital as a tool for building. With AI enabling code generation, this group could potentially produce venture-scale outcomes without relying on traditional funding. The tech industry has struggled with effectively communicating and branding themselves, especially after the era of Steve Jobs and Apple's lifestyle branding. This has led to insular narratives and misunderstandings around emerging technologies like crypto and AI.Physical products and hardware still hold importance for branding and communicating a clear lifestyle/use case, unlike software companies that often neglect this aspect. Successful hardware brands like Teenage Engineering have a distinct identity tied to their products.Devices like Humane's are attempting to break people's "addiction" to smartphones by offering an alternative that frees the user's hands and gaze, challenging the narcissistic nature of current mobile devices.Niche hardware products like USB Club's file-sharing network cater to specific communities (DJs, designers, etc.) and could enable new economic models by tying hardware to digital networks and data storage. There is a potential cultural shift happening around the perception of manufacturing/trade jobs, with younger generations being more open to these paths instead of defaulting to universities and white-collar work.

In today's Daily Fix: A new software update for the PS5 is available now. This adds a few features that were previously in beta, namely improved mic audio from the DualSense and the ability to adjust the brightness of the PS5's power indicator. Neat. In other PlayStation news, March's PS Plus games have been revealed, and this month's offerings include the acclaimed Marvel's Midnight Suns. The card-based game earned solid reviews, but did not perform well commercially. You can also download the Resident Evil 3 remake, as well. Other titles coming include NBA 2K24, Lego DC Supervillains, and Mystic Pillars Remastered, among others. And finally, Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest 2024 has officially been revealed, with the event going live on June 7 at 2pm PT. And don't forget, IGN's own event, IGN Live, is also coming in June, with dates TBA.

Today on the show, Steven and Shaun discuss the major announcements from Microsoft following their big event on Thursday, 21st September. Also joining the guys is Robin Christopherson, to mull over the big news of AI Copilot support coming in Windows 11, and to raise concern about the new Outlook app that replaces the existing Mail and Calendar apps. Will the new app be accessible for users who are blind? Also, there's much discussion on how AI will transform accessibility; does this let developers of inaccessible websites off the hook? Robin and the guys discuss. And of course, there's the usual fawning over new hardware, from the new Surface Laptop Go 3 to the big upgraded Surface Laptop Studio 2. This week, we begin the conversation around Google's upcoming hardware event slated for October 4th. We're just a few weeks away, and now that Google has made all the new stuff we already expected official, we can begin looking forward to the event and seeing how the new Pixel phones and the new Pixel Watch 2 fit into Google's larger vision for what they'd like to do on mobile for the next year. For the second half, we begin by talking about a recent experiment where we tested out the decoupled Lacros Chrome browser on a Windows laptop running ChromeOS Flex, but we quickly diverge into a longer chat about the need for Google to address the rising e-waste problem coming from education-focused Chromebooks. While ChromeOS Flex would seem to offer the clearest path forward there, it doesn't look to be on Google's roadmap, and I'm beyond confused as to why that is. Links Google finally gives us a look at the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2 on purpose The latest Pixel 8 Pro “leak” doesn't feel like an accident this time around An updated Chromecast with Google TV may be on the way: here's what I'd love to see Yes, I have iMessage working on a Chromebook with Beeper for Android [VIDEO] Testing the new Lacros browser on ChromeOS Flex: it works!
