Chief Royal Ramey moved 3,000 incarcerated individuals into public service careers through wildland firefighting. Here is exactly how he built the pipeline.SummaryThe Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program is a nonprofit workforce reentry pipeline that has moved over 3,000 current and formerly incarcerated individuals into public service careers through wildland firefighting. In this episode, Donald Thompson sits down with Chief Royal Ramey, a 12-year firefighting veteran, 2024 TED Fellow, and the program's co-founder, to examine how a fire line became one of the most measurable career pathways in the United States. After serving six years in prison, Ramey discovered that the discipline and identity structure of wildland firefighting provided what the traditional reentry system had never offered. Today his program operates across multiple states, and he is building toward a national model.Episode Long DescriptionChief Royal Ramey spent six years incarcerated before wildland firefighting gave him a framework for purpose, discipline, and leadership that the traditional reentry system had never provided him. As a 12-year firefighting veteran, 2024 TED Fellow, and co-founder of the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program, Royal has built one of the most measurable workforce reentry pipelines in the United States, moving over 3,000 current and formerly incarcerated individuals into public service careers across multiple states. In this episode of High Octane Leadership, Donald Thompson sits down with Royal to examine how California's wildland firefighting infrastructure became an unlikely but highly effective model for workforce equity, legislative advocacy, and community reinvestment. The conversation covers Royal's four-step goal achievement framework, the economic argument for expungement, and what organizational leaders can learn from a culture that trains people to run toward the hardest problems. Housing one person in a California state prison costs close to $130,000 annually. Royal's program routes that same public investment toward a six-figure career that generates tax revenue, reduces recidivism, and creates measurable community financial stability."The most destructive conditions produce the most qualified leaders," argues Chief Royal Ramey, 2024 TED Fellow and co-founder of the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program.Key Talking Points:Wildland Firefighting as a Workforce Reentry Model: The Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program fills a structural gap that exists in 13 states: incarcerated firefighters who serve on the line have no guaranteed pathway into the profession after release. Chief Ramey's nonprofit directly addresses that gap, with documented career outcomes for over 3,000 participants across California and partner states. Expungement as an Economic Investment, Not a Social Handout: Housing one person in a California state prison costs close to $130,000 annually, while a wildland firefighting career generates tax revenue, reduces recidivism costs, and creates a multiplier effect on family and community financial stability. Four-Step Goal Achievement Framework for High-Stakes Environments: Chief Ramey's Four-Step Goal Achievement Framework asks individuals to define the goal, confirm the desire behind it, build a concrete blueprint, and execute without exception. Developed on the fire line, the framework now drives career transition, leadership development, and organizational culture work inside Ramey's program. .Wildland Firefighting Discipline Applied to Business Leadership and Retention: The mindset that produces effective incident commanders maps directly onto corporate retention challenges. Radical accountability, mission clarity, and a culture where every team member understands their contribution are not firefighting-specific virtues; they are the conditions that reduce turnover in any high-performance organization. Climate Crisis and Incarcerated Firefighters as a National Workforce Imperative: Western wildfire frequency is increasing, and the incarcerated firefighter population represents a trained, available, and deeply motivated labor force. CAL FIRE workforce planning and state emergency management agencies have only begun to formally invest in this population as a climate infrastructure asset.Published: May 21, 2026 | High Octane Leadership with Donald Thompson, Episode 184.Chapter Markers0:00 - Intro: Chief Royal Ramey01:40 - From Fire Camp to Public Service: The Journey Out of Incarceration03:30 - Co-Founding the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program05:00 - How Chief Ramey's Four-Step Framework Moves People from Incarceration to Public Service07:15 - How Wildland Firefighting Converts a Criminal Record into a Public Service Identity10:00 - Focus on What You Can Control: The Leadership Mindset That Changes Everything12:00 - Firefighting as a Lifestyle, Not a Nine to Five14:40 - Legislative Advocacy and the Case for Expungement18:00 - Why Expungement Costs Less Than Incarceration: The Economic Case for Second Chances20:00 - What It Feels Like to Change 3,000 Lives23:00 - Why Purpose-Driven Leadership Produces Lower Recidivism Than Job Placement Alone27:45 - What Scaling the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program to 13 States Actually Requires30:00 - How the Prison-to-Public-Service Pipeline Works and What Other States Can Replicate32:00 - From Fire Camps to the Daily Show and Jeff Bezos: What Notoriety Did for the Mission35:30 - Closing: Chief Ramey's Legacy and Magic Wand MomentAbout the GuestChief Royal Ramey is a 12-year wildland firefighting veteran, 2024 TED Fellow, and co-founder of the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program, a nonprofit workforce development pipeline recognized by CAL FIRE and California workforce development agencies as one of the most effective reentry-to-public-service models currently operating in the United States. After serving six years in prison, Ramey built an organization that has guided over 3,000 current and formerly incarcerated individuals into careers in wildland firefighting and public service. His advocacy contributed to the passage of California AB 2147 (signed September 2020, authored by Assemblymember Eloise Reyes) allows formerly incarcerated firefighters to petition to have their records expunged and pursue state fire certifications for the first time. Ramey has appeared on The Daily Show, discussed the economics of second chances with Jeff Bezos, and spoken internationally on the argument that people who have survived the most destructive conditions are frequently the most qualified to lead during a national climate emergency.Resources:Donald Thompson LinkedInDonald's Books: https://donaldthompson.com/books-resources/Chief Royal Ramey LinkedInForestry and Fire Recruitment Program: [Link]Workplace Options 2026 Psychological Safety Study: https://psychsafety.workplaceoptions.com/resource/the-coe-2026-psychological-saf...

California passed a landmark law in 2022 prohibiting cities from mandating minimum parking requirements near major transit stops. Amy Lee explores how cities and developers have responded.Show NotesLee, A., Millard-Ball, A., & Manville, M. (2025). State Preemption in Theory and Practice: The Case of Parking Requirements. Urban Affairs Review, 1–31. https://doi.org/10.1177/10780874251385240Abstract: In U.S. law, states can override actions of local governments that contravene state interests. In practice, preemptions are often more ambiguous nudges, and local responses can vary by interpretation and interests. This paper explores one such case of state preemption: California's 2022 law that limited local governments' ability to require automobile parking. The authors find that the law's complexity and ambiguity created intense debates about interpretations, in all jurisdictions, leading to heterogeneous implementation across cities. Local interests also motivated strategic responses to the law, which the authors present in a threefold taxonomy: cities interested in parking reform used it as a springboard; cities interested in parking reform but facing local resistance used it as a protective shield; recalcitrant cities treated it as an obstacle or subverted the law.California AB 2097 (2022): https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB2097City of Sacramento History of Parking Mandates Memo https://www.cityofsacramento.gov/content/dam/portal/cdd/Planning/parking-revisions/A-Short-History-of-Sacramentos-Parking-Mandates.pdfHCD AB 2097 Technical Advisory: https://www.hcd.ca.gov/sites/default/files/docs/policy-and-research/ab-2097-ta.pdfUCLA Center for Parking Policy https://its.ucla.edu/programs/parking-center/
Welcome to The Turf Zone Podcast. This episode features the article “Autonomous Mowing on Trial” written by Landon Erbrick, Paul Bartley, Mark Hoffman and Tanzeel Rehman of Auburn University and J. Bryan Unruh of the University of Florida. As the landscape industry faces mounting labor challenges, tightening environmental regulations, and growing pressure to improve efficiency, the emergence of mowing technologies are generating widespread attention. But do these machines actually deliver on their promises of cost savings, labor efficiency, and sustainability? A multi-disciplinary team of researchers from Auburn University, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia has launched a multi-year research initiative to answer that very question. Supported by industry partners and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), this effort is part of a larger grant-funded project titled “Landscape Equipment Sustainability Strategies: Do More with LESS.” The project involves a comprehensive evaluation of large-platform autonomous mowers to assess their real-world performance, cost-effectiveness, and operational safety across a variety of landscape conditions. Why This Research Matters The adoption of automation in turf care is no longer a theoretical discussion. Manufacturers have introduced commercial autonomous platforms, and early adopters are already deploying them on sports fields, university campuses, and business parks, yet independent research remains scarce on the topic. Most prior studies have focused on small-platform robotic mowers primarily used in residential settings. Traditionally, these machines relied on perimeter wires and random navigation patterns, limiting their efficiency and scalability. However, recent technological advancements—such as real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning and EPOS (Exact Positioning Operating System) navigation—have dramatically improved the precision, reliability, and adaptability of small autonomous mowers. This rapid evolution in positioning and sensing technologies has expanded the potential for autonomy in turf management far beyond the homeowner market. Building on these advancements, large-platform autonomous mowers, that is, commercial-scale machines capable of operating both manually and autonomously, have now entered the market. These systems aim to address many of the industry's most pressing challenges, including labor shortages, rising operational costs, and increasing sustainability demands. Our research seeks to evaluate these emerging technologies through a rigorous, data-driven approach to help landscape contractors, municipalities, and turf managers make informed decisions about integrating autonomy into large-scale operations. What We're Testing & Why It Matters This project is evaluating large-platform commercial mowers across four equipment categories: Manual gas-powered Manual battery-powered Autonomous gas-powered Autonomous battery-powered We're conducting real-world field trials using standardized test plots with varying levels of landscape complexity, from open square acres to obstacle-rich environments designed to mimic trees, bed edges, and other site constraints. Our goal is to understand how different combinations of power source (gas vs. battery) and operator mode (manual vs. autonomous) influence performance, cost, safety, and usability in professional landscaping scenarios. What We're Measuring Across hundreds of acres of mowing in diverse conditions, we're tracking: Labor Efficiency – Time per acre, supervision requirements, and total operator hours Energy or Fuel Consumption – Gallons or kilowatt-hours per acre Mowing Productivity – Speed (acres/hour) under manual vs. autonomous operation Cost of Ownership – Lifetime return on investment (ROI) including equipment price, maintenance, energy, and labor Operational Safety & Setup Time – Issues related to autonomous deployment, landscape variability, and required oversight Adaptability to Landscape Types – How autonomy performs in simple vs. complex site conditions Together, these data will help landscape contractors, fleet managers, and municipal buyers evaluate whether, how, and when to adopt autonomous and battery-powered equipment based on real numbers, not hype or pressure. Safety and Supervision Under the Microscope We're also conducting obstacle detection trials using mannequins and field hazards at multiple approach angles to understand how these machines interpret and react to real-world variables. Our team is especially interested in hybrid operation strategies, where a single operator supervises an autonomous unit while mowing with another, significantly boosting productivity without a full leap into autonomy. Implications for the Green Industry This research comes at a critical time. As noise restrictions, emissions regulations (e.g., California AB 1346), and labor shortages reshape the industry, many contractors are asking: What's the smart next investment? By delivering field-tested, brand-agnostic insights, our goal is to help professionals: Make evidence-based equipment choices Optimize labor deployment strategies Understand technology limitations and serviceability Prepare for future regulations and automation trends. California AB 835 was signed into law in October 2023 and it directs the State Fire Marshal to research and develop recommendations for building standards that would allow “single stair” multifamily buildings above three stories, then report back to the legislature and the California Building Standards Commission. So this is not yet a statewide code change that suddenly makes single stair buildings legal everywhere tomorrow. It is a state-driven pathway to rewrite a very specific rule that has shaped apartment design for decades. And that rule is simple: once you go above a small building size, most codes require two enclosed stairways. That requirement drives the floor plate, the building core, the hallway length, the number of units you can fit, and the economics of what is even possible on a narrow or oddly shaped lot. Any time you touch fire and life safety code, you will get pushback, and some of it will be sincere and valid. The pro-single-stair argument is that many global cities allow this form safely with modern fire suppression, compartmentalization, smoke control, alarms, and design standards. There is ample research pointing to a strong safety record for small single stair apartment buildings and arguing the U.S. code is out of step with the evidence.------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

AB 495 is a troubling bill in California that's just passed the legislature and is heading to the governor's desk for his signature or veto. The bill would allow for any adult to make custody-like educational or medical decisions for any minor child, simply by signing an affidavit claiming they are “related to the child by blood, adoption, or affinity within the 5th degree of kinship.” No proof would be required for this process to take place. Welcome back to the EPPiC Broadcast! Today, Greg Burt, Vice President of the California Family Council, is here with us to discuss this bill, its ramifications, and potential consequences. Pastor Jack Hibbs, Calvary Chapel, Chino Hills, CA released an alert concerning pending legislation that is in the California Senate and is expected to pass. The bill allows anyone to bring a form to a school, without any I.D. and take the child under the pretence of providing medical care, etc. All of this can be done without the parent being notified or the form being made public. In response, Pastor Hibbs has told his congregation to leave California if the bill passes. The problem with that is that the Lord already told me in Dec 2024 to declare to anyone with ears to hear is called to leave while you still can. This warning was followed by His command for me to "get the word out!" To everyone in California: GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!Mark C. Today we're joined by Harrison Tinsley, who is fighting for custody of his young son Sawyer, whose mother is raising him as "non-binary." Harrison shares his story of being denied the chance to meet Sawyer until he was over a year old, as well as his contentious custody battle for him. Currently, Harrison has half custody and spends every second of his custody time with Sawyer, choosing not to work those days. He shares about his ideological differences with his son's mother, which he never imagined would become such a big issue. Now Sawyer's mother is raising him "non-binary" and posting on social media about his supposed "gender identity," when in reality, Sawyer has expressed that he is, in fact, a boy. This, along with the mother's concerning multiple mental health problems and a previous safety incident, led Harrison to file for full custody, which he was denied. Harrison claims his son knows he's a boy and wants to be a boy, and Harrison is fighting to keep him safe and happy with who he is. Mark and Dr. Drew pick up right where they left off, paying off Dr. Drew's outrage at CNN by harkening back to their April 2020 report highlighting the dangers of Jacksonville Florida's dangerous decision to re-open their beaches. They go on to discuss the legalities of new standards in public health messaging using the recently passed California AB 2098 as an example of what may be to come. They also discuss the situation in Iran as they explore how the women of that country may be the ultimate driving force behind any change that may come. Before diving into the heavier but necessary topic of analyzing the Buffalo shooter's manifesto, Carter discusses the implosion of USDTerra (and its sister token, Luna) in the crypto market, wondering whether the crash was an intentional move by banking industry insiders in an attempt to gain legitimacy. Next, he discusses three cases of "medical authoritarianism": 1) Biden's proposed expansion of WHO power; 2) California's bill to silence and punish dissenting doctors (AB2098); and 3) the recent revelation that Justin Trudeau's invocation of the Emergencies Act in response to the 2022 Freedom Convoy was not requested by law enforcement after all, contrary to Trudeau's claims at the time. Finally, Carter spends most of the episode discussing the Buffalo shooter's manifesto and how it relates to that of the Christchurch shooter, separating legitimate claims and concerns from philosophical errors and collectivist vitriol, and addressing some uncomfortable but important subjects. California AB 1771 will charge an additional 25% capital gains tax on almost EVERY RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY sold within 3 years of purchase. The additional tax would decline in annual increments until the property has been owned for more than seven years.Legislators proposed AB 1771, also known as the California Housing Speculation Act, on the misguided notion that soaring prices of California homes are driven by investor-purchasers of residential properties in California. In this webinar Nema Daghbandan is a Partner with Geraci LLP and Aaron Norris discuss the bill and what it could mean for "Main St" California investors. It is also a call to action. Eviction law in California has changed quite a bit over the past year, first with “just cause” legislation introduced as part of State Assembly Bill 1482, the Tenant Protection Act of 2019, and then with moratoriums introduced as part of the Governor Gavin Newsome’s state orders by signing the Covid-19 Tenant Relief Act (AB2088) into law in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Is California's AB-890 good for NPs? What does it really mean?I had the honor of speaking with Melanie Balestra, NP, JD in California on the law signed by Gov. Newsom on September 29, 2020. According to the CANP website, it states that "AB 890 allows NPs to work without physician supervision, removing the supervisory requirement in existing law so NPs can provide the same high-quality care they do today and care more directly for patients."But of course, there is a lot in the details, and (IMHO) not all of it is good.Visit https://npbusiness.org/podcast/ this and all the episodes.

It starts here in California. If things go well with the coronavirus, expect leftists to tout it as a way to go for the whole country.
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Over the past decade, Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft have shifted the role of ridesharing from cool to necessity within the modern movement economy. However, as TNCs start to expand their services - through e-scooters, e-bikes, and even public transit connectivity - dynamics within their user base, driver pool, and overarching business models are, in turn, affected. In this episode, host Dennis Wisco speaks with ridesharing expert and entrepreneur Harry Campbell, and CoMotion MIAMI's Jonah Bliss, to answer the ever-looming question: Has ridesharing plateaued? Entrepreneur and ex-aerospace engineer Harry Campbell is the founder of TheRideshareGuy.com, a blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to reaching rideshare drivers and enthusiasts alike to serve as a platform for drivers to connect and share their experiences. Always having been drawn to uncovering the inner-workings of our modern world, Harry studied aerospace engineering at UC San Diego and then worked for six years at Boeing. After a while, Harry realized a yearning to embark upon his own entrepreneurial endeavors and entered the gig-economy. When Harry started driving for Uber and Lyft in 2013, he quickly realized that there's a lot more to getting people safely from Point A to Point B. Harry started blogging about his experiences and conversations, and TheRideshareGuy.com was born. In addition to his dedicated content on TheRideshareGuy.com, Harry continues to write for top tech publications, like WIRED, Forbes, Fusion & Business Insider. His first book, “The Rideshare Guide,” was published in 2018. Since then, Harry has continued to work on creating educational content and reference materials to help new drivers navigate the industry. The Rideshare Guy was founded in 2014 and has quickly grown into a thriving community for rideshare drivers across the globe. Harry and his team post monthly content on their blog, podcast, and youtube to help hundreds of thousands of drivers work smarter and not harder to capitalize on their full potential in the gig economy. TheRideShareguy.com is a well-informed source for not only Uber and Lyft drivers but also food delivery providers like Doordash and PostMates, scooter services like Bird, and more. TheRideShareGuy.com also offers advice and services beyond the basics of rideshare culture, and has resources for drivers spanning from insurance, taxes, policy information, mileage tracking, and even “Life After Ridesharing.” Tune into this episode as Dennis, Harry, and Jonah address trending topics in the rideshare economy, including regulatory policies and outcomes like California AB-5 and Congestion at the Curb white paper. Through these conversations and more, listen as they uncover the bigger picture of how TNCs have become a critical business model for the mobility of people and goods. Tremors, in and of themselves, cause minimal damage. But sometimes those tremors are the precursor to something a whole lot bigger. Organized real estate is ripe with these little shakeups, and whether you’re a brokerage, franchiser, vendor, portal or agent, the Tinder-ization of everything WILL impact your business. It’s already changing the way we generate leads and may very well eliminate outbound marketing as a viable option. On this episode of Industry Relations, Rob and Greg discuss a few of the current tremors making waves in organized real estate, starting with the new FCC rule allowing mobile carriers to block unknown callers. They explain how the iOS 13 update might impact lead generation and why inbound and content marketing will become crucial in light of these changes. Rob goes on to explore how the death of outbound marketing could make agent teams that much more important and challenges the idea that agents working with teams qualify as independent contractors under California Assembly Bill 5. Listen in for Greg’s insight around how high agent turnover impacts the way SaaS vendors do business and learn why nimbleness and brand recognition are key to survival in the real estate space. What’s Discussed: The new FCC rule allowing mobile carriers to block unknown callers How the iOS 13 update will impact lead generation in real estate Greg’s insight around the value of inbound + content marketing How the death of outbound marketing will make agent teams even more important The distinction between independent contracts and employees in California AB-5 Rob’s argument that team leads qualify as employers under AB-5 How 30% agent churn impacts the way real estate vendors do business Why SaaS companies in real estate must focus on customer experience The idea that every day is Day One in establishing brand recognition Why being nimble is the key to survival in the real estate industry Connect with Rob and Greg: Rob’s Website Greg’s Website Resources: CMLS Annual Conference GVLAR MLS Tech Forum Reimagine! 2019 Los Angeles REALTORS with Guns Facebook Group Rob’s Interview with Chris Drayer Greg’s Post on Telesales FCC Rule on Blocking Unknown Callers California Assembly Bill 5 Chris Drayer’s Post on the Death of Lead Gen CallAction’s Post on iOS 13 Our Sponsors: Cloud MLX The Red Dot
Due to the passage of California AB-11, which puts a mandatory waiting period on issuing hot takes, this week’s show was recorded a day late for compliance purposes. Please enjoy these cogent, room temperature takes. This week: mixed recycling, the villains of the Trader Joe’s line, and a new way to make cold brew.
Michael Lotito and Jim Paretti of Littler’s Workplace Policy Institute discuss pending California legislation – Assembly Bill 5 or “AB 5” – which is fast-tracking its way through the state legislature. The bill would codify portions of last year’s California Supreme Court decision in Dynamex v. The Superior Court of Los Angeles County, in which the court instituted the “ABC test” for determining whether a worker is an independent contractor under state law. The speakers explain how AB 5—if enacted in its current form—could dramatically alter the legal landscape of California’s employment classification law.

Do you tend to overreact? Are you prone to misrepresenting another's position in order to shine a light on yours? Congratulations...you may be a sensationalist! We joke, of course, but that seems to be the goal of a good amount of "evangelicals". The Pastors have California AB-2943 (aka 'The Bible Ban') in mind; a bill that has a lot of people up in arms. However, there are a good amount of people that misrepresent what the bill is actually trying to enact. While The Pastors do not agree with the implication of the bill, they speak to those who are lying about its contents. As Christians, we are instructed to speak, walk, and worship in truth. Are we going to act like Christians or Sensationalists? Show notes available at theconnectcast.com/show-notes/sensationalism

S2E13: Justice Had Just Begun: Stories From The 2017 Innocence Network Conference, Part Two This special edition of Wrongful Conviction was recorded at the 2017 Innocence Network Conference in San Diego, CA, where 170 exonerees and 750 members of the innocence movement gathered to honor newly freed people and learn about the latest developments in freeing the wrongfully convicted. Part Two features interviews with Kristine Bunch and Obie Anthony. Kristine Bunch was 22 years old and pregnant when she was charged with setting a fire that claimed the life of her three-year-old son, Anthony, on June 30, 1995, in a trailer home they shared in Decatur County, IN. She was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of 60 years for murder and 50 years for arson and languished behind bars for more than 17 years until her exoneration in 2012. Obie Anthony was 19 years old when he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1995. There was no physical evidence connecting him to the murder, and prosecutors relied on the testimony of John Jones, a convicted killer and pimp who ran a house of prostitution near the scene of the crime. He was exonerated in 2011 after serving 17 years in prison. Obie Anthony is the founder and president of Exonerated Nation, a non-profit organization that offers exonerees a variety of support services so that they may successfully transition to life outside of prison and reintegrate back into society. His activism was instrumental in the passage of California AB 672 in October 2015, now known as Obie’s Law, which requires the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the DMV to provide up to one year of transitional services including job training, housing assistance, and mental health services to all eligible exonerees released from state prison. wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co. In 2001, the DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) was first introduced in the U.S. Senate. This legislation sought to grant citizenship to current college students and military enlistees brought to the U.S. as dependent children. Numerous versions of the federal DREAM Act have been introduced but failed to win passage. On the state level, similar legislation has passed in states like California (AB 130) in 2011, while Georgia and Alabama have moved to restrict access to institutions of higher education for undocumented students. Recent announcements by President Obama's administration that ""low priority"" undocumented immigrants may not be targeted for deportation signals yet another chapter in this struggle. Our panelists discuss the DREAM Act in the broader historical context and meaning of citizenship and the immigrant experience in the United States. They also examine debates and activism surrounding the DREAM Act as illustrating the conflicting legal, political, and socioeconomic landscape of immigration reform. Featured panelists: Lisa Garcia Bedolla, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Education; Chair, Center for Latino Policy Research, UC Berkeley Kevin Escudero, doctoral student, Department of Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley Aarti Kohli, Director of Immigration Policy, Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy, UC Berkeley School of Law
