Endurance News: Making swimming pools safer by reducing chlorine disinfection byproducts Swimming in indoor or outdoor pools is a healthy form of exercise and recreation for many people. However, studies have linked compounds that arise from chlorine disinfection of the pools to respiratory problems, including asthma, in avid swimmers. Now, researchers reporting in ACS' Environmental Science & Technology have found that using a complementary form of disinfection, known as copper-silver ionization (CSI), can decrease disinfection byproducts and cell toxicity of chlorinated swimming pool water. Disinfecting swimming pool water is necessary to inactivate harmful pathogens. Although an effective disinfectant, chlorine can react with organic matter and compounds introduced by swimmers, such as those in sweat, urine, sunscreens and cosmetics, to produce disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Epidemiological studies have linked DBPs to health problems, including respiratory issues, bladder cancer, and pregnancy and birth complications. One way to reduce the amount of added chlorine is through the use of complementary disinfection strategies, such as CSI, which involves generating antimicrobial copper and silver ions by electrolysis. Susan Richardson and colleagues wondered whether using CSI along with reduced chlorine levels could disinfect pool water while also reducing DBP formation and toxicity. To find out, the researchers collected water samples from two pools treated with CSI and chlorine -- one outdoor and one indoor. They detected 71 DBPs, some of which were quantified for the first time in pools. In experiments with mammalian cells in the lab, the team found that the indoor pool samples were more toxic to cells than the outdoor samples, likely because outdoor DBPs can volatilize in the open air or degrade with sunlight over time. In indoor pool water, the lowest levels of DBP formation and toxicity were observed when the lowest amount of chlorine was used in combination with CSI. To control for factors such as number of swimmers, temperature and pH, the researchers also conducted experiments in simulated pools with a solution added that mimics human body fluids, and they observed similar results. These data suggest that using CSI with lower amounts of chlorine could be a way to make swimming safer, the researchers say. Since it's appearance at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing kinesiotape has become all the rage among amateur athletes as a means of rehabilitating injury, preventing new injuries and enhancing performance. But aside from accessorizing the athlete's look with colorful racing stripes, is kinesiotaping really all that? What does the science say about these claims? I take a look and fill you in. Bill Plock is the owner and operator of a Colorado social media success story. 303Cycling and 303Triathlon are well known repositories for all things on 2 wheels as well as multisport in the Rocky Mountain Region and he joins me to talk about the impact of 2020 on local race organizers as well as his thoughts on what might come to pass in 2021.

Liposomal Encapsulation Technology consists of microscopic healthy fat particles called phospholipids along with vitamins. This technology has been used for many years to deliver certain drugs to specific tissues within the body without affecting the other parts of the body. What does full-spectrum hemp extract mean you ask? Hemp oil can refer to a full-spectrum oil from the Cannabis sativa plant or hemp seed oil, which is oil that comes from just the seeds of the hemp plant. ... Full-spectrum hemp oil that also contains plant matter may add other effective compounds, which may help with certain health issues, such as inflammation. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324450.php How Does Hemp Work? Hemp is rich in compounds known as cannabinoids. Research shows cannabinoids like cannabidiol may help treat everything from eczema to epilepsy. Cannabinoids interact with The Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. The ECS is a biological system present in all mammals. It impacts almost every system in the human body including: Memory Appetite Inflammation Fertility Pain Mood The primary purpose of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis, which means that aiding this regulatory system helps your body return to normal after periods of intense stress–including hard workouts. The ECS is comprised of endogenous cannabinoid receptors. Two of these receptors have been identified, CB1 and CB2. Cannabinoids like hemp extract interact with these receptors, helping to achieve homeostasis. Maintaining a healthy endocannabinoid system is vital to our well-being. Substantial evidence shows a strong link between disease and endocannabinoid deficiency. While our bodies cannot produce cannabinoids on their own, we can support our ECS by integrating supplements like hemp recovery products into our diets. https://ikorlabs.com/ikor-blog-athletes-guide-to-cbd Announcements: Joanna Zeiger is going to be in the house next weekend! Looking at course data, The Sole Supplier analysed average finish times, medical stations, toilets, entry fees and how good local accommodation was, as well as environmental factors, such as air quality, temperature, rainfall and altitude. They then collated data to give each of the 81 marathons on the list a score out of ten, naming the best and worst marathons in the world. https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/marathon/a30135094/best-worst-marathons-in-the-world-study/ Methodology How did we pick the marathons for the study? All IAAF-certified marathons (476) were considered for the index. In order to refine the list, each country featuring in the list were allowed up to three marathons for inclusion. These were decided by taking city population size into account (http://worldpopulationreview.com). The marathons taking place in each country’s three “largest cities” were included in the study. During the data collection phase, any marathons missing more than 1 data point (due to no data available) were removed, leaving a final list of 81 global marathon courses. https://thesolesupplier.co.uk/news/up-for-a-challenge-these-are-the-worlds-best-marathon-courses/ The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is the worldwide governing body for professional level athletics and track and field. In 2007, three partners came together to take bike fitting to another level. Cliff Simms was a medical device engineer who had come up with a prototype of the 3-D bike fit system and Todd Carver was a bike racer and bike fit expert who knew how to apply the technology to help cyclists get the most out of their body and bike performance. Franko Vatterott was the third partner who was selling high altitude tents at the time, but knew how to market and sell the ground breaking 3-D fit technology. Their business plan intended to bring the system to market, make it the most in-demand and respected bike fitting system, and then eventually sell it to a major bicycle company. In September of 2012, the trio sold RETUL to Specialized and now Todd Carver is the Head of Human Performance at Specialized and Cliff Simms is the Head of the RETUL division. Franko Vatterott is the Founder of The Human Interest Group, agency for developing brands and partnerships like RETUL, Sansego and others. Welcome back. A Case for Zone 1 - by Laura Marcoux https://d3multisport.com/d3-university/article/a-case-for-zone-1 Based on article in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance Purpose: To describe training loads during an Ironman training program based on intensity zones and observe training–performance relationships. Methods: Nine triathletes completed a program with the same periodization model aiming at participation in the same Ironman event. Before and during the study, subjects performed ramp-protocol tests, running, and cycling to determine aerobic (AeT) and anaerobic thresholds (AnT) through gas-exchange analysis. For swimming, subjects performed a graded lactate test to determine AeT and AnT. Training was subsequently controlled by heart rate (HR) during each training session over 18 wk. Training and the competition were both quantified based on the cumulative time spent in 3 intensity zones: zone 1 (low intensity; AnT). Results: Most of training time was spent in zone 1 (68% ± 14%), whereas the Ironman competition was primarily performed in zone 2 (59% ± 22%). Significant inverse correlations were found between both total training time and training time in zone 1 vs performance time in competition (r = –.69 and –.92, respectively). In contrast, there was a moderate positive correlation between total training time in zone 2 and performance time in competition (r = .53) and a strong positive correlation between percentage of total training time in zone 2 and performance time in competition (r = .94). Conclusions: While athletes perform with HR mainly in zone 2, better performances are associated with more training time spent in zone 1. A high amount of cycling training in zone 2 may contribute to poorer overall performance. Our interview today is with former ITU professional triathlete and coach Sara McLarty. Sara joins us a couple of weeks after ITU Stockholm August 26th. Check it out at Inside Specialized Triathlon - Ben Hoffman Youtube video Ben on heat adaptation Training over 100 degrees in Tucson and sauna training The primary goal of head adaptation is building blood volume Articles on heat adaptation SportSci.org Article by From Lawrence E. Armstrong, Ph.D. Department of Sport, Leisure, and Exercise Science University of Connecticut Complete heat acclimatization requires up to 14 days, but the systems of the body adapt to heat exposure at varying rates. The early adaptations (initial 1-5 days) involve an improved control of cardiovascular function, including expanded plasma volume, reduced heart rate, and autonomic nervous system habituation which redirects cardiac output to skin capillary beds and active muscle. Plasma volume expansion resulting from increased plasma proteins and increased sodium chloride retention, ranges from +3 to +27%, and is accompanied by a 15-25% decrease in heart rate. This reduction of cardiovascular strain reduces rating of perceived exertion, which is proportional to central cardiorespiratory stress, also decreases during the first five days of exercise-heat exposure. Plasma volume expansion is a temporary phenomenon, which decays during the 8th to 14th days of heat acclimatization (as do fluid-regulatory hormone responses, see below), and then is replaced by a longer-lasting reduction in skin blood flow that serves to increase central blood volume. Gatorade Sports Science article Heat acclimatization gradually disappears if not maintained by continued repeated exercise-heat exposures (Pandolf, 1998). The benefits of heat acclimatization are retained for ~1 wk and then decay with about 75% lost by ~3 wk, once heat exposure ends. During this period, re-acclimatization occurs more rapidly than the initial acclimatization when re-exposed to heat (Weller et al., 2007). A day or two of intervening cool weather will not interfere with acclimatization to hot weather. In addition, after achieving heat acclimatization, train-ing and heat acclimatization can be interspersed by every second or third day (Périard et al., 2015; Sawka et al., 2003). Our interview today is with top age grouper and Kona veteran Tim Hola This will be Tim's 16 time in Kona He has broken the 9 hour mark with an 8:58:57 Tim lives in Highlands Ranch with his wife Nicole and two children (Connor and Spencer) As with our last week's guest (Matt Chrabot), Tim is in Chattanooga for the 70.3 World Championship. We'll be talking about his career, season, key training sessions and juggling being a working age-grouper. Thanks of course to last week's guest, Matt Chrabot, pro triathlete who we've been seeing on the podium all season. It was great to catch up with him and hear about his prep for Chattanooga. Coaching discussion topic - I had a coaching question come up and I'd like to share that with you all and a practical solution to the question. Topic of hydration - there are a number of theories on what works because everyone is different. The first thing you need to understand is what works for you To understand what works for you, you can do everything from your own experimenting to getting a professional assessment done in a lab to determine sweat rate, salt concentration, metabolic rate, etc. Some say drink to thirst and I say drink to need. I personally do not get particularly thirsty training or racing, but I have a high sweat rate. I know what my fluid loss is. While I don't try to replace it completely with fluid consumption, I do try to prevent losing too much weight to fluid loss during a race and becoming dehydrated. I keep a log of hydration notes in Excel and know how many ounces of fluid I want to consume at various temperatures on each the bike and run. The way I keep track of that is by knowing the various fluid sizes of my bottles (bike, hand and holster). Scenario - race with hand held, using ice and water to cool. The question - my hand held is dual purpose (hydrate and cool). How do I keep track of the ounces that are going to my stomach versus my skin. The answer - is simple. On your next practice run, take that hand held bottle and when you take sips try to make them consistent in terms of the duration of suck or squirt. Then count and keep track of the number of sips/squirts that it takes to consume the contents of the bottle. Divide the bottle size (16 oz) by the number of sips (eg 20), and you now know how many sips it takes to consume 16 ounces. When you race and you don't have another way to measure your consumption, count the sips and you'll have a good idea. Make sure you practice and get your estimate with what you will be using in the race. The previous example was with a hand held running bottle, but the same can be done with a paper cup. Our interview today is with Matt Chrabot, pro triathlete who we've been seeing on the podium all season and we're excited to catch up with him before he heads out to Chattanooga for the 70.3 World Championship. We're your hosts Rich Soares, Khem Suthiwan and Bill Plock. We are glad you are joining us from where ever you enjoy your endurance sport. Coaching discussion topic - tapering and cramps From "But there is something about those last couple of weeks before the marathon, when you are cutting back your mileage, getting more rest, and preparing for the big race, when everything, and I do mean everything, seems to bother you more." Call them taper tantrums--the phantom pains, panic attacks, and much more--that plague most marathoners during the three-week period of decreased training just before the race. "Runners develop not only a physical but also a psychological dependency on running," says Troy Smurawa, M.D., a 2:46 marathoner and physician at Akron Children's Hospital Sports Medicine Center. "So when runners take time off, they go through withdrawal." Hence, the weird constellation of mental and physical symptoms that crop up during the taper. From Roughly half the athletes I work with begin to notice little aches and pains they never noticed before the taper period. The pains show up for no apparent reason. In fact, these pains were nonexistent during the high-volume training phase, making it tempting to resume longer training hours. If aches and pains emerge, resist the urge to increase training volume. From Tapering: In the three days prior to the race, the crampers trained 1.1 hours on average, while the non-crampers trained 0.6 hours on average. This despite the fact that the non-crampers actually did marginally more training overall in the final week (31.8 km versus 26.5 km). Each day is centered around a different theme, starting with a spotlight on each discipline of triathlon: Monday, July 17: Swim Day Tuesday, July 18: Bike Day Wednesday, July 19: Run Day Thursday, July 20: Recovery Day Friday, July 21: Member Appreciation Day Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23: Race Weekend The complete schedule—including ideas for how to participate from just a few minutes to a full day—are available at usatriathlon.org/triweek. #TriWeek is largely a social media-based initiative, as aspiring triathletes, age-groupers and elites are all encouraged to share their multisport experiences online. Prize packs will be awarded each day to randomly selected participants who share questions, advice or inspiring stories on social media using the hashtag #TriWeek. In addition, triathletes can submit stories of how they got started in the sport by using #WhyDoYouTri and #TriWeek on social media or by emailing communications@usatriathlon.org. On Member Appreciation Day, USA Triathlon Staff will select one of the #WhyDoYouTri participants to receive a USA Triathlon Lifetime Membership. The week culminates with Race Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, in which first-timers and experienced triathletes alike are encouraged to complete a race, register for their next event, or simply volunteer to staff an on-course aid station. The fourth weekend of July typically boasts one of the highest participation rates in multisport events across the country, with more than 160 USA Triathlon-sanctioned races taking place this year, including 55 youth races.
