The turn-around on this podcast was about as fast as Ben Kanute's race at Ironman Arizona yesterday. When we saw Ben announce, just one week after 70.3 Worlds, that he was going to race IMAZ, we reached out to see if he was up for a YTP three-peat experience. And so here we are. Less than 24 hours after claiming the third podium spot and a Kona slot, Ben arrived at our hotel this morning to share his experience with this community. What a guy! We are so grateful to Ben and to all of our listeners. This community is amazing, thank you for being a part of it. In this episode we discuss: - takeaways from Ironman 70.3 World Championship - Slowtwitch distractions - working with a mental coach - the monkey mind - racing his first Ironman - how the day unfolded at Ironman AZ - being strategic but staying within himself - patience - the longest miles of the day - racing in his backyard vs. traveling - Briella's first Ironman race - getting his Kona spot - Dad strength, is it real? US athletes, Sam Long, Matt Hanson and Chris Leiferman, will challenge for a podium spot along with Great Britain's Joe Skipper and South Africa's Kyle Buckingham. A stacked field of pro females will include American athletes Sarah True, Skye Moench, and Lauren Brandon, who will go up against Canada's Jen Annett, Australia's Renee Kiley and many more. IRONMAN Arizona 2022: Preview, start times and how to watch LIVE 14 Nov 2022 by John Levison Last week we highlighted our top five races for the remainder of 2022, and the first event on that list comes up on Sunday, the Biostarks IRONMAN Arizona. Start time and how to watch live The Pro Men will kick-off their day with the 2.4-mile, single-loop swim in Salt River, Tempe, at 0640 local time, with the Pro Women starting five minutes later at 0645. With Arizona on Mountain Standard Time, that means global race start times of: 1340 UK / 1440 CET / 0840 Eastern / 0540 Pacific. The event will benefit from full live broadcast coverage, the final race of the 2022 IRONMAN long-distance season to be featured on their IRONMAN Now platforms via Facebook Watch and YouTube – and also embedded on this preview. As always, the ever reliable IRONMAN Tracker is the perfect data addition to support your viewing. If you haven't got it on your phone already, where have you been?! IRONMAN Arizona Pro Men A dominant winner at IRONMAN Wales and a career-best fifth at the IRONMAN World Championship suggests that Great Britain's Joe Skipper will arguably start as favourite, in what is a deep start list in Tempe. Big races in September, October and November might be considered sub-optimal for many, but based on history at least, there's little reason to believe that the Brit won't be physically and mentally ready to perform at his best, once again. Looking back to 2019 for example, sixth in Kona was followed just over three weeks later by a fantastic victory at IRONMAN Florida, capped off with a 2:39 marathon. Success in back-to-back racing has proven to work for the six-time IRONMAN champion time after time. Even last year, he was totally dominant at IRONMAN Chattanooga, three weeks after second place IRONMAN Switzerland. He's seemingly at home racing in the U.S., too. Joe Skipper 2022 photo credit IRONMAN Wales [Photo credit: IRONMAN Wales] The USA's Sam Long made plenty of headlines at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, but with that very contentious penalty on the bike, not the sort that he wanted. Winner in Gdynia, strong at the Collins Cup and a podium at the PTO US Open, the form is there – hopefully we'll get to see it on Sunday. Sam Long St George photo credit Tom Pennington Getty Images for IRONMAN Sam Long at St George [Photo credit Tom Pennington/Getty Images for IRONMAN] The full-distance debut of Ben Kanute will be of particular interest, especially having turned around what was a mid-season of relatively under-whelming results by his standards. He put on a brilliant show at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking a second silver medal at the championship. Strong across all disciplines, he should be at the front of the race for much of the day. Ben Kanute 2nd at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2022 Photo: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN When you then add Matt Hanson, Chris Leiferman, Kristian Hogenhaug, Bart Aernouts, Justin Metzler and plenty more into the mix, then the way that racing has been going over the last few years, you have to think that the course record figures of Lionel Sanders (7:44:29 from 2016), will be under threat. You can be sure that Great Britain's Andrew Horsfall-Turner will be pushing the pace in the water from the get-go – and with Kanute likely wanting to be a part of that too, that would benefit the man from Wales too. Pro Women The USA's Skye Moench (#10) is the PTO's top-ranked female professional set to race in Tempe, a race where she has previously finished 11th (2016) and fourth (2018). Winner of three IRONMAN titles since then – and having finished fourth in St George, ninth in Kona this year – she will rightly start as favourite. skye-moench-kona-2022-bike (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images for IRONMAN) Illness ruined her Kona prospects, but Sarah True still has the class to be a factor in Arizona. A winner this year at Eagleman 70.3 and IRONMAN Lake Placid, the two-time Olympian now juggles triathlon alongside being a mother and studying. Entering Arizona with a, ‘one race, one win' history over the distance after her debut performance at IRONMAN Lanzarote, Great Britain's Lydia Dant has made rapid progress inside her first year in the Pro ranks. On the bike in particular – aided by her skills as a bike fitter – Lydia has excelled, and will be looking to make progress on that fast roads of the IRONMAN Arizona course towards the front of the race, once out of the water. Lydia Dant - IRONMAN Lanzarote 2022 finish Photo Credit: James Mitchell for Club La Santa After finishing 10th (St George) and 12th (Kona), you can't write off the podium prospects of the consistent Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN) either. The Dane is really consistent across all three disciplines. Jen Annett (CAN) has taken second place this year at both IRONMAN Des Moines and IRONMAN Mont Tremblant, and so is another athlete sure to be chasing the podium positions in the late stages. You can find the full start list here. Recent IRONMAN Arizona Pro winners 2019: Sara Crowley (AUS) – Pro women only race 2018: Eneko Llanos (ESP) / Heather Jackson (USA) 2017: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Kaisa Sali (FIN) 2016: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) 2015: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) Prize Money: What's on the line? The prize purse on offer this weekend is $100,000 – with each of the winners collecting a $15,000 share of that total. In addition to money, there will be a total of four qualifying slots (two MPRO* / two FPRO) for the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii, 12 and 14 October 2023. A valuable opportunity to get the KQ box ticked well in advance. (* Note – Joe Skipper is already qualified by virtue of his victory at IRONMAN Wales). The total funds will be paid ten-deep, as follows: $15,000 $9,000 $7,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,500 $2,000 $1,500 $1,000 Of course, thanks to the formation of the Professional Triathletes Organisation, financial rewards from performance are not solely from on-the-day performances, and this is one of the few 2022 races remaining to improve your ranking. The PTO World Rankings will see a total of $2million awarded at the end of 2022, based up on the final standings in those points tables. The rewards there can be substantial, with a move up or down the rankings system potentially earning you more than any individual event. Before taking on Alcatraz, you should be able to do this distance in a pool (140 lengths of a 25-yard pool) or during our regular group open water swims in Berkeley without stopping. Feel free to contact us if you're not sure if you are up for it. Alcatraz swims are $245 per event. There is a $50 late registration fee within one month of the swim. In addition to the swim itself, registration includes an event t-shirt, an Alcatraz Swim sticker, and a yellow silicone Alcatraz swim cap. All Alcatraz swims will take place in the morning, usually meeting in San Francisco between 5 and 8am. The registration page shows an approximate check-in time, but swimmers will receive an email prior to the event with finalized details. Many triathletes say that they've "learned a lot" while training for an IRONMAN. But what exactly did they learn? On today's episode, host Andrew Harley interviews two athletes who belong to the IRONMAN class of 2021. Why did they choose to race the 140.6 distance, and how did they choose which event they wanted to complete? What did the physical and mental preparations teach them? Is there anything they would have done differently? What wisdom would they pass along for others considering the full distance? What lessons from IRONMAN can be applied to other areas of your life?

Ojalá podamos volver a hacer básquet pronto”.

Our guest this week is pro triathlete Sarah Crowley. She's all over the podium these days with a 3rd place in Kona and a win at IMAZ, we are stoked to have her on the show this week to talk about her career, season and future. Thanks to last week's guest Marcus Smith is going to sharing his inspirational story from the documentary "Fighting For Every Breath". From the peak of endurance fitness to fighting for his life in an instant. The story is about how he held on and fought his way back from immobilizing and near-fatal injuries. He found the mental strength to find reasons to celebrate the smallest of victories. Liposomal Encapsulation Technology consists of microscopic healthy fat particles called phospholipids along with vitamins. This technology has been used for many years to deliver certain drugs to specific tissues within the body without affecting the other parts of the body. What does full-spectrum hemp extract mean you ask? Hemp oil can refer to a full-spectrum oil from the Cannabis sativa plant or hemp seed oil, which is oil that comes from just the seeds of the hemp plant. ... Full-spectrum hemp oil that also contains plant matter may add other effective compounds, which may help with certain health issues, such as inflammation. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324450.php How Does Hemp Work? Hemp is rich in compounds known as cannabinoids. Research shows cannabinoids like cannabidiol may help treat everything from eczema to epilepsy. Cannabinoids interact with The Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. The ECS is a biological system present in all mammals. It impacts almost every system in the human body including: Memory Appetite Inflammation Fertility Pain Mood The primary purpose of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis, which means that aiding this regulatory system helps your body return to normal after periods of intense stress–including hard workouts. The ECS is comprised of endogenous cannabinoid receptors. Two of these receptors have been identified, CB1 and CB2. Cannabinoids like hemp extract interact with these receptors, helping to achieve homeostasis. Maintaining a healthy endocannabinoid system is vital to our well-being. Substantial evidence shows a strong link between disease and endocannabinoid deficiency. While our bodies cannot produce cannabinoids on their own, we can support our ECS by integrating supplements like hemp recovery products into our diets. https://ikorlabs.com/ikor-blog-athletes-guide-to-cbd Announcements: Joanna Zeiger is going to be in the house next weekend! Looking at course data, The Sole Supplier analysed average finish times, medical stations, toilets, entry fees and how good local accommodation was, as well as environmental factors, such as air quality, temperature, rainfall and altitude. They then collated data to give each of the 81 marathons on the list a score out of ten, naming the best and worst marathons in the world. https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/marathon/a30135094/best-worst-marathons-in-the-world-study/ Methodology How did we pick the marathons for the study? All IAAF-certified marathons (476) were considered for the index. In order to refine the list, each country featuring in the list were allowed up to three marathons for inclusion. These were decided by taking city population size into account (http://worldpopulationreview.com). The marathons taking place in each country’s three “largest cities” were included in the study. During the data collection phase, any marathons missing more than 1 data point (due to no data available) were removed, leaving a final list of 81 global marathon courses. https://thesolesupplier.co.uk/news/up-for-a-challenge-these-are-the-worlds-best-marathon-courses/ The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is the worldwide governing body for professional level athletics and track and field. A couple of months ago some friends encouraged me to try our first draft-legal triathlon. I’ve been doing non-draft triathlons for nearly 15 years, and thought it was time to try something new. “First” experiences at my age are rare! I tapped into a rush of adrenaline yesterday that almost made vomit at the finish line! That’s cool!! Not the vomit part, but the tapping into that much human drive. I want more of it and I’ll be back for it next year! From “Perhaps this is a sign,” Teri Ward on winning another 303 contest–with Rinny surprise Of all times, during the week of the 2019 IRONMAN World Championships, Teri lost her beloved husband Chuck, after a battle with cancer. 2019 has been a tough year for Teri. She also attempted IRONMAN Boulder in June and was not able to finish. With hopes of qualifying for Kona, her summer turned upside down with the disappointing race, but much more importantly, with a turn for the worse as Chuck’s battle with melanoma cancer worsened. When told of winning Teri said, “A couple of friends pointed out that I had won a Kona bag. What a surprise! You see, I had DNF’d at IRONMAN Boulder this year, missing a Kona slot, then my husband’s fight against cancer took a turn for the worst in August and my motivation to train was very limited and my darling husband passed the week of Kona and I haven’t been sure if I would ever train again. Perhaps this is a sign that I am meant to use his determination and strength as motivation to keep up my Kona quest.” From Endurance News: Races this weekend include Ironman Arizona and Ironman Cozumel There are tons of Coloradans racing in Arizona this Sunday. I ran into Melanie Mitchell from Poppy Sports in the village. She's here with Lori Pacheco and Maureen Kennedy. We also know TO is racing in Cozumel. Solos Smart Glasses - Our goal is to bring information about products like this to our audience and give them insights that they might not otherwise be able to find on their own. I've read some online comments and want to comment on a few of them. "I’m not sure that these Smart Glasses will help the wearer stay present, if they’re taking calls, checking email, social media etc." I've used them for a few weeks now. While you can receive or make a call, you can do that if you have your phone in your pocket anyway. You have the same choice to answer or not. If you do decide to answer it, you can do it without taking your hands off the handlebars or without looking at your phone, making it safer in my opinion. You can not check email or social media, so that comment is simply misinformed speculation. "Durability and long term reliability are my concerns like if dropped on accident, or cold rainy weather scenarios." I have to say that's a concern of mine as well. I am constantly dropping my glasses and I worry that I would do that with these. "Need a view from what's behind you and I would by them in a second!" Scott addressed this in the interview and it sounds like this is something that is on their roadmap, assuming it meets the "not distracting" test. This post from Meredith Kessler to her son Mak after a rough day at the office in Kona was the original inspiration to have Meredith back on the show. Part of being a good athlete is keeping perspective. There are races that go well and races that don't. "Dear Mak: Sometimes cherished dreams come true and other times they repeatedly slip away. This picture symbolizes both. You and your dad are my most sacred dream while a dream of a quality race with gusto in Kona fell yet again by the wayside. Today your mom couldn’t finish what I started. It was not my best nor proudest moment in sport. While this may continue to haunt me, as Kona usually does, I will keep learning, growing and recalibrating from it all. On repeat! And always relentlessly hug you in between

Walking into the unknown is getting to be the norm around these parts and this week's show is dedicated to BJ's recent experience with this preferred flavor of adventure. For years he has talked about traveling and racing an Ironman by his lonesome and last week he did just that. Putting it all out there yet again, BJ raced hard at Ironman Wisconsin and pulled out great knowledge from his experience to move him closer to reaching his goals. On this month's Ask the YTs, we take listener questions about Beej's experience and he opens up about what went down in Madison, how he plans to move forward into IMAZ and his skillful navigation of the days leading up to the race, his execution, and recovery. BJ continues to step into his warrior self and there should be no question in anyone's mind that his continued achievement will lead to nothing less than the fulfillment of his dreams. I know that watching his journey is like indulging in a movie that I can't take my eyes off of and living vicariously through his athletic greatness will make all of us better competitors. So listen up because he drops the wisdom bombs in this episode. Deep thanks for your support. Go to Apple Podcast and leave a review for the show, if you've already done that then please share this with your friends, especially those who are contemplating IM Wisconsin next year. We are accepting new athletes now so if you feel you are ready to tap into your inner badass, contact us to get the dialogue started.

Mi Amigos. I told you that early in my career I did a couple projects in Chihuahua Mexico, right? That was before it got a bit dicey with the los drugos down there. More innocent times. So we made it to February! Old Man Winter has shown up with a vengeance up here in New England. It’s ok, I like winter. Or at least I can deal with it when it’s really only a couple months out of the year. That’s one of the joys of living here is that you get 4 real seasons, but not enough of each to make them annoying. Makes us flexible and tough. Since we last talked it’s been snowing almost every other day. Last weekend we got a cool 2-day blizzard that dumped 3 feet of snow. Since it was cold too, zero degrees Fahrenheit, it was that fluffy snow that is great for winter sports and fairly easy to move, but we got a lot of it. It’s over Buddy’s head and he’s confined to a short path in the front yard. He’s got cabin fever and is quite bothersome. I took him for a walk during the blizzard but it was over his head and up to my thighs so we could only break trail for a couple hundred feet before we had to turn around. I’ve been having to get most of my runs in on the treadmill which is not optimal. After we last talked I ran the Derry 16 miler and felt pretty good. The weather was good at just around freezing. I took it super easy and ran/walked the big hills then closed it nicely in the last 5k. I ended up running around 2:17 and felt pretty strong. That capped a 53 mile week for me on 4 runs. The following weekend I went out for a 3 hour easy run. I took it super easy and did loops around my house. I felt like I could keep going at the end so my base is good and strong. It’s a bit dismal with the snow and cold and darkness but you know how it is; the only way out is forward. Besides, the cold weather slows the zombies down. Thanks to those of you who threw me some donations for my Team Hoyt campaign for Running the Boston Marathon this year – I appreciate it. Those of you who haven’t, now’s a good time. I still need your help. I’m only ¼ way to my goal. Come on now, I don’t ask you folks to buy t-shirts, I don’t give a rat’s ass if you give me a review on iTunes or vote for me in whatever podcast awards are the thing of the day. This isn’t a commercial venture for me, it’s a creative hobby. So, cough up the cabbage and we’ll call it even…quid pro quo Clarice…quid pro quo. Today we have a most excellent show for you. I interview SherAnne Nelson who is the captain of a team that is going to take on the Patagonia Expedition Race next year which is a super hairy race in South America. It’s a run-bike-paddle-mountain climbing survival type thing. Hard core. I feel like I could have done a better job with SheriAnne. I feel like I should have asked, “Are you nuts? Leavingyoru comfy life and family for this misadventure? How do you feel about that?“ but I didn’t. Even with my love of a good adventure, I’d be terrified. I haven’t been traveling and that always makes me a little itchy. But I’m getting a lot done, in between angsty episodes of over eating and over sleeping...But the days are getting longer and I’m hitting the road next week. In section one I wrote a bit of a tongue in cheek piece about some of the myths surrounding marathon running that we have to watch out for. In section two we’ll talk about the philosophy of time. So, keep on shoveling, but don’t shovel straight lines because as we all know evil spirits love straight lines and will follow them right to your door. Shovel crooked lines. It will confuse the walking dead too. On with the Show! I am a Fitness and Nutrition Coach that believes in helping people realized their untapped potential. I believe too many people go through life wondering if, and wishing they could do something magnificent. Everyone's "magnificent something" is different, mine just happens to be epic adventures. Everything I do, I think about my children and the example I am setting for them. Setting goals is critical to being successful in life and I love to set big goals that make my heart beat a little faster and make me wonder if it is possible because I love nothing more than busting past that mental barrier. Anything is possible. What I bring to the 2016 Patagonia Expedition Race Team is the desire to succeed. Once I set a goal I will do whatever it takes to accomplish it. The hope and inspiration that I bring to others when sticking through the thick and thin of an event brings me great pleasure. Not only do I want to accomplish my goals for me but for everyone else watching me. I want to be the name that comes off of people's lips when they say, "I didn't quit because of you." The other attribute I will bring to the team is the ability to solve problems under pressure. I deal best when there is pressure, I have the ability to compartmentalize the situation and accomplish what needs to happen in order to move on. I have the ability to keep people calm and focused on the situation at hand. SheriAnne Nelson Fitness and Nutrition Coach KonaMom.com CoachSheriAnne.com Section two – Life Skills “Time” http://runrunlive.com/time Outro Hey folks we have shoveled a crooked path to the conclusion of yet another RunRunLive Podcast. Episode 4-305 in the can! I think we’re short on time so I’ll keep it brief. When it gets really cold out I like to wear a balaclava. Unfortunately a couple years ago I lost my balaclava. Maybe one of you could knit me one? I hate to buy one because I we only need it 2 or 3 days a year and I know as soon as I get another one I’ll find the old one. My wife in her Yogi Berra moments, (not the picnic basket bear – the catcher with a proclivity for malapropisms) always asks me if I’m wearing my baklava – which gives me a hilarious visual of having my head wrapped in Greek pastry. The new book is getting typeset into a beautiful e-book by a nice gentleman in Pakistan – should be able to ship some promo copies next week. I have to get it converted to Kindle too so I can post it up on Amazon. And remember If you haven’t donated a couple bucks to my Hoyt cause – now’s a good time! https://www.crowdrise.com/TeamHoytBoston2015/fundraiser/christopherrussell We’ve got the Groton Road Race coming together for April 26th this year. I’m working to set up a virtual race category so folks can run it remotely. We’ll send you one of the super sweet tech shirts that we’re putting our ‘wearable art’ on this year. http://www.grotonroadrace.com/ I was talking with my daughter last week. She had started a new job and was complaining that she didn’t sleep well because she had too many things going on in her head. This is another version of the Tetris problem. You lie awake at night going over all the things you have to worry about and trying to fit them together in a way that makes sense. Your brain is working on that puzzle and can’t sleep until it gets resolution. The way to address this problem is to get out a piece of paper or the equivalent handful of electrons, and write down all the things that are on your mind. You purpose here is not to solve the Tetris problem. Your purpose here is to capture all the bits so your subconscious knows that they are in safe keeping. You do this before you go to bed and it allows your brain to take a break and sleep. So sleep tight, and I’ll see you out there. Closing comments http://runrunlive.com/my-books

I think we're short on time so I'll keep it brief. When it gets really cold out I like to wear a balaclava. Unfortunately a couple years ago I lost my balaclava. Maybe one of you could knit me one? I hate to buy one because I we only need it 2 or 3 days a year and I know as soon as I get another one I'll find the old one. My wife in her Yogi Berra moments, (not the picnic basket bear – the catcher with a proclivity for malapropisms) always asks me if I'm wearing my baklava – which gives me a hilarious visual of having my head wrapped in Greek pastry. The new book is getting typeset into a beautiful e-book by a nice gentleman in Pakistan – should be able to ship some promo copies next week. I have to get it converted to Kindle too so I can post it up on Amazon. And remember If you haven't donated a couple bucks to my Hoyt cause – now's a good time! https://www.crowdrise.com/TeamHoytBoston2015/fundraiser/christopherrussell We've got the Groton Road Race coming together for April 26th this year. I'm working to set up a virtual race category so folks can run it remotely. We'll send you one of the super sweet tech shirts that we're putting our ‘wearable art' on this year. http://www.grotonroadrace.com/ I was talking with my daughter last week. She had started a new job and was complaining that she didn't sleep well because she had too many things going on in her head. This is another version of the Tetris problem. You lie awake at night going over all the things you have to worry about and trying to fit them together in a way that makes sense. Your brain is working on that puzzle and can't sleep until it gets resolution. So sleep tight, and I'll see you out there. Closing comments http://runrunlive.com/my-books
