    Ep 84: Spoke Safety

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2025 66:31

In this episode, I sit down with Jarrett Wendt, CEO of Spoke Safety (https://www.spokesafety.com/) and founder of the nonprofit Coalition for Cyclist Safety (https://www.coalitionforcyclistsafety.org) —two organizations committed to a simple but powerful mission: prevent collisions, save lives, and make cycling safer for everyone. We know that when cycling becomes safer—and feels safer—more people ride. More kids bike to school. More families go for joyrides. More adults leave their cars at home and choose the bike for commuting and exercise. It's a ripple effect that benefits everyone. But the benefits don't stop there. A safer cycling environment means a stronger bike industry, as we saw during COVID when empty roads made riding feel immensely safer, bringing new (and hopefully lifelong) riders into the fold. And beyond that? The impact on human health and the planet is undeniable. We're happier, healthier, and more connected when we ride. And Mother Earth? She wins big when we swap car trips for bike rides. The truth is simple:

“Coaches are so much more than just a program. It's someone that listens, someone that has been there (oftentimes) and they can drawn on both academia and peer reviewed studies, and also from our experience and what we know works, like evidence -based practices…” — Adam Mills Hey listeners, please meet my friend and cycling coach, Adam Mills! We've known each other for over 20 years, from the early 2000s, when he first began his cycling coaching career as an intern at Carmichael Training Systems and I first began my cycling-racing career. Through the years we've stayed in touch as fellow bike racers, fellow midwest-raised folks, our mutual respect for one another as we've both evolved and grown has always been present, and now I'm once again fortunate to call him my coach. After spinning my wheels the last few years through injuries and self-coaching, I am back under his “supervision” and I benefit tremendously from his oversight, his experience and his willingness to teach me what I don't know, but need to know ;) Tune in to this episode as we talk about what's on the cutting edge forefront of cycling coaching, performance, fitness, technology and of course, AI! If you have follow-up questions for Adam, please visit his website and reach out to get answers. From his coaching website Source Endurance: “Adam Mills, MSED, RCEP — Adam earned his Bachelor's in Exercise Science at the University of Kansas in 2003 and immediately began his career at Carmichael Training Systems as a cycling coach. He returned to the University of Kansas, completing his Master's in Clinical Exercise Physiology in 2005. During his graduate studies, Adam was a regular on the Dean's List, and a recipient of multiple academic scholarships. During his studies, Adam discovered his passion for both coaching cycling and competition, which quickly led him to the elite ranks of cycling. Adam has competed with top ranked amateur and collegiate cycling clubs since 2001. Adam has competed in international competition, countless NRC races, innumerable elite races, and national championships in many different disciplines of the sport. Adam's true talent comes as a cycling coach with his ability to combine his vast experience with his knowledge of sport. He is indeed a student of science, sport, athletic performance, strategy, and tactics, continually educating himself by keeping up to date with current trends and methods in sport. Adam is able to incorporate these attributes to help his clients reach and exceed their goals.  Adam's clients have earned 25 national championships in 11 disciplines on two continents. He truly feels a sense of pride when his clients realize their potential. “I ride my bike to connect with humans.” - Duzer Hey you guys, please meet Ryan, aka DUZER, Lover of the Adventuresome (Bike) Life! This guy is the definition of FULL STOKE — I've been following along with him online for years, always uplifted and encouraged by his posts, adventures, authenticity and vulnerability. He's 45 and never owned a car-which I just appreciate and respect for SO many reasons. So… I was really happy when he said HELL YES to being on the show. I really wanted to talk to him about his bike-centric (car free) life, his recent Tour Divide race attempt, his enthusiasm for life, his ability (and thoughts about how) to handle negative commentary online, and so on and so on… and the interview did NOT disappoint! I could go on and on, but it's honestly far better to just listen and hear him tell you, as well as to check out his amazing content online (which is how he earns his living, and I find THAT also so inspiring and encouraging). Episode 81: Hayden Lee, Enneagram

The levels of deep conversations-- that people can share vulnerably in such a quick way-- is so amazing and so transformational. It's the core motivation but also the core fears, which helps them understand why they do what they do. Most important though, Enneagram provides a path to development. Not only yes, I know my type … now what do I do about it?” - Hayden Lee ************ Hi everyone! Please meet my amazing guest (and coach!) Hayden Lee, of Hayden Lee Coaching International. I had the really fortunate opportunity to connect with Hayden back in 2020 when my then-coach introduced us so that I could dig into my Enneagram type with Hayden. After years of identifying as a “3” I re-took the test with Hayden and learned that I am actually a “7.” Now- Hayden says we don't change types, even as we grow and evolve in our lives. So why the change? Interesting, with some self-reflection, I had previously taken the test and answered in the way I THOUGHT I should answer. I've been an achiever, learner, doer, leader my entire life and therefore thought the questions orienting me towards being the ACHIEVER were the ones I was supposed to choose. As it turned out however, when I took the test and answered honestly with how I really feel, without giving any care to what the “others” may think or expect of me… I learned I am a “7.” So what is a 7? And what is Enneagram?? Well —that's the point of this episode! What if you could learn your CORE MOTIVATION!? And your CORE FEAR?! The Enneagram is a really great tool for self-knowing and self-discovery. And Hayden is an EXPERT. He delivers the info in such an easy to understand and digest way- and for his help and coaching, I am BEYOND grateful. (*On the heels of this episode recording, Hayden did a really powerful 90-minute coaching session with me and as a result I FINALLY pressed go on some things I've been wanting to LAUNCH, not the least of which are some Maximum Enthusiasm retreats!). PMA = positive mental attitude and when I think of PMA, I think of Rob ... Please meet my friend Rob Kelley. While we share a love of bikes, racing, and other interests... the main reason I asked Rob to come on the show was because I wanted to ask him about his laid-back-ness... his "don't sweat the small stuff" attitude and positive vibes that are so consistent and so reliable- and so contagious. How does a person get like that, and what are his practices, mantras, beliefs that lend themselves to his positive mental attitude? We talk about this and of course, about bikes, and so much more! Thanks for listening! PS— in my intro I mention BOHO Vans, a great company that builds out incredible camping vans for rent as well as purchase. He is the author of The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life, and he set a record (since broken) for Leadman, an epic endurance event consisting of a trail running marathon, 50-mile mountain bike race, Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race, 10k road run, and Leadville 100 Run, all above 10,200' in the Rocky Mountains." Whew! And on top of all that, he's an amazing and REAL human. On this episode, we talk about what it's like as we hard-charging, high-achieving athletes move from an era of aiming for podiums, to redefining what success looks and feels like as life takes on new meaning with its brevity and we employ gratitude in every workout or race just celebrating that we're alive, healthy, and still getting after it. Travis has also written a 2nd book about his journey with his Dad and the Alzheimer's diagnosis and unfolding that has changed their family dynamic in big and heartbreaking ways. We talk about that, as well as Travis' approach to coaching and so much more. Thanks for being here and giving this one a listen! Visit: TravisMacy.com for his books, coaching, courses and more! Growing up, my parents always told me that if I couldn't pay cash for something, I couldn't afford it. With few exceptions, like my law school loans and my first few home, that has been my life motto. Yes, I do use credit cards as a way of leveraging points, perks and privileges, but I pay my balances off each month. Also yes, I am one of those “weirdos” that MMM talks about: I am debt-free, very much on purpose, I don't buy things I can't afford, I don't need the latest, newest, greatest stuff (ok, unless it's a bike, then I do, and I splurge! )… I drive fewer miles than I ride on my bike each year, I live in towns where I can bike commute or walk to the places I need to frequent, and …one other money-saving life hack: I quit alcohol back in late 2017 and according to my “I'm done drinking app,” I've saved over $32k- enough to buy a car! Ok, I digress, this isn't about me, it's about my guest, but hopefully this preview gives you a small inkling as to why I was SO doggone excited to connect with this guest and to interview him!! ********************************************** I am so excited to bring MMM to your ears!! I've been a long-time fan and follower of MMM and have read his blog posts and newsletters time after time, always learning and always appreciating his approach to things. I really like how he breaks down the math on dollars and cents saved by doing things like riding a bike versus driving a car, how his family budgets their funds for groceries and living less-expensively so that they can live MORE expansively. FIRE = Financial Independence Retire Early is a movement I've been studying, following, living myself personally and embodying for awhile now. Save more, spend less, live more of your life and spend less of it buying/storing/selling crap... I learned even more about MMM and what drives him, as well as what he's into these days (like Peter Attia's book Outlive) and I'm so excited to share it with you here! Please give his website a look: https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/ Subscribe to his free boot camp and his newsletters, and follow him on IG as well. Be inspired to think outside the box and set down your consumerism mindset while ponding the possibilities of what else might be possible! Here's just one of many great quotes from his blog: "These days, it's totally normal for even the most indebted people to go out to enjoy acres of Sushi and lakes of Sake on Friday nights, laughing and having a grand old time without the smallest thought about the deepening grave of debt they are digging. It doesn't even strike them as a problem that they don't own their own houses and even their cars are borrowed... It can be pleasant to indulge in these things, and it sure is easy. But there's another path available: the more difficult yet far better one. Certain rare people live in the same society, and work the same jobs as the folks described above. But they're a little bit better at math, and they can think a little bit further into the future. They see that money is useful for spending, but even more useful as a tool for earning more money. So they train themselves to master finance, and hard work, and self discipline. And they figure out how to have just as much fun as the big spenders, while being sure to do it in a way that allows them to save at least 50-75% of their income."

Today's guest is a new friend I met - no surprise- through bikes! I had the good fortune of parking next to Gavin at a mountain bike stage race back in March and thanks to the ‘gram & Strava, we connected and stayed in touch… Fast forward a few months and I noticed some content he was posting regarding a very difficult topic — femicide. While we talk about the bike's transformative role in Gavin's life (since that is a through-line of most of my guests' stories, and my lifelong love affair, after all), we pivot quite quickly to a far more serious topic that is really on Gavin's heart right now to discuss and bring out into the light: Femicide. "Femicide is generally understood to involve intentional murder of women because they are women, but broader definitions include any killings of women or girls." - W.H.O. I admire Gavin for raising awareness of this topic both for me and for others in his social circles, and for being willing to have the hard conversations… after all, that is what allows things like femicide to not only exist but persist. Talking about it feels like a good first step for those of us just becoming aware of this global and catastrophic issue. We don't need to be an “expert” in a topic to be able to bring it up and have candid talks about it. Arguably the worst thing we can do with topics like this is ignore them or brush them off as “inapplicable” to our lives. Thanks, Gavin, for shining a light on a discussion we all need to be having. I hope this encourages you to do some research or to have some conversations with people in your life the way Gavin has with people in his life. ***************************** Thank you thank you thank you to our newest sponsor, Gavin Payne, of Haven Properties— with his support, we've brought this podcast back to life! Also, meet Maureen O'Keefe: victim of a crash caused by a negligent motorist. Maureen went for a bike ride one day and she came home weeks later a very different version of herself. She sustained serious injuries, including a shattered shoulder and knee, in the collision. Instead of finding a justice system ready to punish the person who did this- a young driver (who to this day has yet to apologize to Maureen) - Maureen was appalled to find the system all-too-eager to blame HER. She witnessed both the DA and defense counsel victim-blaming HER and she experienced a criminal/traffic case where the players in the game seemed more concerned with keeping the young driver driving and going to school, than it did with punishing the driver who left Maureen forever maimed, impaired and altered. Maureen's tenacity from day one is what left such an impression on me and given the various hurdles faced in her case with the DAs, defense counsel, even the cops' body cam footage, we felt this interview would be hugely informative and helpful to anyone who may ever find themselves in a similar position. Hey friends, please meet Pete! (Today (11/10) is also his birthday so let's please give him a shout-out, some thanks and virtual high-fives today ! I know Pete as a result of being in the bike advocacy world - he's the ED of Bicycle Colorado, Colorado's top and most effective statewide bicycle advocacy organization. He's been there for a few years now and our paths have understandably crossed as a result of our work in this realm. Yet somehow I've also always known he came from outside of the world of bikes prior to taking this role, and I felt called to host him on the show here once I announced my retirement. I don't know why I had that idea, it just felt like the right time to sit down and have this chat with him -and it was! Also yes you read that right - on 10/21/21, I announced my retirement from my work as TheCyclist-Lawyer. The truth inside me has been welling up for some time and I was honestly making myself sick trying to outrun it, avoid it, out work it, muscle through it. More on this for another time and show- I've got a lot to share as I continue to unpack this transition I'm in. So Pete and I —we barely skimmed the surface on the bike advocacy questions and topics I wanted to cover with him so I'm hoping we can do a part 2 soon. For now- check this one out and be inspired— to pivot in life and in work, AND, to get involved in ANY WAY you possibly can, in bike advocacy or in whatever realm of service in any topic that touches you. The world needs us ALL rolling up our sleeves getting more involved! I welcome Demi back for her THIRD interview -- yes, three. She's that good, she continues to grow and stretch my thinking and I'm so thankful for her friendship, coaching and the thought-provoking conversations we have. Awhile back she'd mentioned something to me about the leap from the hamster wheel onto the "magic carpet," or letting go of things that no longer serve us, moving on from chapters of past callings and looking ahead to the new ventures and seasons and chapters that call us, beckon us, but usually -without all of the information that we want or "need" to be "ready" to make the leap. (Yes, lots of air quotes to indicate these ephemeral things we get so wound up in our heads about)... she said to me once, there's always a gap, Megan.... there's always a gap between the leap and the landing... between leaving the shore of the known, swimming out into the vast ocean and then eventually seeing the sights of the new shore where we are headed -- perhaps that space of the magic carpet, the calling, the dharma, the Gift of our life.... There is almost always a gap - -this almost always requires a leap into the unknown, jumping and building wings on the way down... Demi is the perfect person to unpack this for us and it's so beautiful that I happened to be re-reading "The Great Work of Your Life" at this time. Yes, there's a lot here, but I am positive something here will land with you, will expand your awareness - will cause you to perhaps close a door behind you even as you seek the next door to open. You can find Demi here: TheAuthenticleaderinYou.com Take her Leadership quiz – learn more about your leader personality type ! Are you ready to make your leap of faith? Several years ago, a very serious traumatic brain injury (TBI) landed Lauren in Craig Hospital for several months where she had to relearn basic things like how to walk. She went from being a pro cyclist to someone who said she was done with cycling forever... understandably, given the extent of her injuries. She went back to school, getting her masters degree in epidemiology and then a short while later found herself on COVID task forces during the height of the COVID pandemic in 2020. Feeling that itch once again, she decided to try cycling again and actually set the women's WR for Everesting --which is where a cyclist rides the equivalent of the elevation gain of Mt Everest on their bike in one sitting/one ride. This sparked something inside her and the desire and urge to again race at the top of the sport returned … at the same time her paths crossed with CINCH Elite when she appeared on their podcast, and the next thing you know... Lauren won Unbound Gravel (formerly known as DK), then she won Steamboat Gravel, and then she won Gravel Worlds, setting a new women's course record. She's had several other podium finishes in there as well. It's been an incredible season for her. Her team offered her full support so she was able to leave her dream job to focus on racing full time. All of these things sound like reasons to celebrate - -redemption, road to recovery, comebacks, overcoming the odds and so much more... Oh yeah and in the midst of all of this, she was also married this summer, in May. And yet--this series of successes has been clouded by much online negativity and really caustic commentary about women's gravel racing. Regardless of who is right or wrong, or what side you align with (if that's even a thing), the online and social media vitriol surrounding these events has really been something to witness-- and it's been heartbreaking to see, also. Lauren has been subjected to some really pointed criticism. Somehow, she seems to thrive in adversity (which I think she readily admits about herself) and she's doing her best to put one foot in front of the other as she navigates this growing -pain-season in women's gravel bike racing … a relatively new sport which historically has been one race, where all racers start together. Hear her chime in on her thoughts about TBIs and recovery, gravel racing, the online commentary and how she is processing all of this. An energy bar that boasts clean label, meaning … we can actually identify and pronounce the ingredients, and they make us feel good before/during/after exercise? A brand that builds community around its products? YES. YES that is an actual thing! Meet Ryan Naboshek, today’s show guest. He did the corporate job thing… and on the side, his passion kept him busy on nights and weekends while he hand-made healthy bars in his kitchen … that’s right. He started his passion project on the side and he cared about it so much, he spent his free time working on it. Until the day came when his corporate job employer laid off the bulk of its workforce - including Ryan. And instead of it being a panic moment, it was the launchpad for CRAFTED to really become a legitimate endeavor for Ryan and his two co-founders. I find this story so inspiring because it shows that when you truly love something you’re working on- it doesn’t HAVE to be your full time job, or at least, not right away. You can nurture it and experiment with it and then maybe something happens that catapults it one direction or the other. But bottom line when you’re passionate and enthusiastic about it, it feels very worthwhile… and you’ll hear that in Ryan’s energy and tone. It’s really exciting to see what they’ve done with their bars and where they want to go - -they’ve got another new flavor waiting in the wings ready to launch, in fact, and they continue to build communities of runners, cyclists and climbers with their branding and products. More than that, though, is the impact they are working to have -they are disrupting an industry replete with products filled with sugars, sugar substitutes (GROSS), preservatives for longer shelf life … and instead they’ve come to the athletic and healthy/vegan communities with legit fueling sources full of legit and REAL foods, which sit well in the tummy and which provide sustained energy…. YES PLEASE. I love the bars — the cyclist bar especially since I am a cyclist at my core. But yes I also eat the runner and climber bars too and they’re delish. I also recommend and use these bars for life activities- like hiking, courtroom and work time, travel — those times when I want to eat something that will keep my blood sugar levels constant, provide me food for fueling without a sugar/insulin spike and resulting crash…. I found this interview super inspiring and uplifting- Ryan’s energy is contagious!! I hope it boosts your day like it did mine. Happy listening! I had this incredible honor and privilege of writing the eulogy for my beloved Grandmother, Jane Hottman. In this era of COVID, funerals are not held in churches, attended in person by all of her loved ones. Instead, they are delivered virtually, online, via a slideshow of photos, songs, and recorded eulogy audio. And so it came to be that I had the opportunity to reflect on my 41 years with my Grandmother Jane... to undertake the impossible mission of reducing her incredible life to words and to attempt to impart her lessons, wisdoms, and strengths, on anyone who may listen. I have always believed strongly in Stephen Covey's "begin with the end in mind" principle- to envision your OWN funeral, who is attending, and what you might wish they would say about you. And then- to go out and to live your life in accordance with those remembrances. If you want your spouse to say that you were a loving, kind, supportive partner -then each day, live in such a way that those sentiments are spoken authentically about you. So many people say their family comes first in their lives, and yet so few people live and act as though that is really true. My Grandma Jane truly did put family first -in everything she did and said- in the plans she made, in the way she ran her businesses, her finances, her schedule. Her family TRULY did come first -and we all knew how much she loved us. How many of us can say that will truly be our legacy? Well here's a tip: each day we can shape our legacy by the way we lead our households and the way we live our lives. Starting now. Starting TODAY. If you prefer the written word over audio to truly soak up my message about Grandma Jane, please visit MaximumEnthusiasm.com to read the eulogy. Thank you for letting me tell you about our amazing Jane- our family matriarch and guiding light. May she rest in peace.

"...what can be a deterrent is, when you look at these marketing pieces, there is nobody that looks like us. At all. Cycling apparel on Instagram feeds- you don’t see any black people, you don’t see any minority groups, period. I think that’s an inaccurate depiction of cycling – I don’t know why there isn’t more representation, but that’s something that motivated me. I’m going to do a photoshoot to show some nice gear and we’ll take shots to give people imagery of two dudes riding bikes- maybe cycling isn’t just for white people, maybe I can do this! It sparks inspiration. They get intrigued. They give it a shot." - Calvin Smith Today’s guest is my friend Calvin, aka C-Smith (@seesmith on IG). We met riding bikes down in Scottsdale awhile back, he’s one of those cyclists you gravitate towards in groups— smiling, energetic, friendly, engaging — and I’ve been following along in his cycling adventures and conquests ever since. A “former hooper, now cyclist,” as he says, it’s clear he has serious athletic talent and excels at anything he puts his mind to. As I began watching his IG posts closely I learned he was trying to send a far more important message than simply, “go fast on your bike” … his message: yes, cycling has black athletes in the sport— we just need to do a far better job showing them in cycling marketing pieces and online campaigns. Calvin decided to do something about it by compiling his own sponsors and photoshoots with friends, to make it more enticing and welcoming; to bring in more cyclists. He is sparking inspiration, indeed. Give him a follow and you’ll see the passion, energy, enthusiasm he exudes. He’s a joy to host on the show, I enjoyed learning even more about him and his life off the bike, and want to share his current fundraising effort here in the hopes you’ll take part: It’s called 10 for 10 (read more here). He posts, “The goal is simple: Raise $10,000 to buy 10 laptops for 10 kids from underserved communities to help close the Digital Gap. The money that is raised will go directly to The Hidden Genius Project (@hiddengeniuspro) who will purchase these computers to train them on computer technology, software development and entrepreneurship in the growing tech sector.” As of June 24, he updated by saying, “Together, WE, have raised over $6400 on Bonfire (including direct donations that were given to The Hidden Genius Project) and over $5400 on GoFundme! "I came up on this mountain. Then I realized the universal truth – the thing that I learned is that you always have to have a positive mindset. Because if you don’t, everything will be difficult, it will be a challenge. If I started griping about the mountain, I would’ve probably been stuck at the next few mountains.  Keep your head down, keep plugging away, eventually you’ll get to your destination- but you gotta have a positive mindset about it. " My guest this episode is Corey Hilliard, aka “Corey the Courier.” (https://www.instagram.com/coreythecourier/) We met out on the race course at Gravel Worlds in 2015 and then again as we rode up a hill side by side in the 2018 Dirty Kanza 200 mile race. I was on my singlespeed- and I looked over at his bike and he was on his FIXIE! I’ve been following along with Corey and his adventures and endeavors. He is inspiring and funny and it seems there is NO challenge that he won’t tackle! I was so excited to pick his brain about cycling, diversity in this sport that we love, how and why he does these crazy bike events and challenges and what keeps fueling his fire. Friends, I am so excited to introduce you to my friend Cajardo Lindsey... Lawyer, husband, Dad, actor, and now movie-writer and producer! Prior to this podcast I did not know about the events that led to Cajardo’s decision to attend law school. This event- traumatic and awful - led to him becoming this powerfully-persuasive and compassionate attorney with his acting background lending itself to him being an amazing story teller and very effective advocate. He’s incredible to witness in the courtroom. Learning about Blackface The Movie also really touched me - the premise behind this movie really really impacted me. The anti-racism movement is on FIRE in our country right now and this movie is on point with that movement and frankly on point as we all decide what we will do about it to make our world better - and also perhaps, how we will choose to live life differently coming out of COVID as well. From the movie website: https://www.blackfacemovie.com/ How many of us struggle with feeling like an impostor, asking ourselves questions like: Who am I to start a business?  Who am I to go to college?  Who am I to try to make a difference in this world?  Who am I to do one of the millions of things we as human beings desire for ourselves?  This film flips those questions on their head and asks, who are you not to do one of the millions of things we as human beings desire for ourselves? And if, and when, you do - what does it mean?   https://www.blackfacemovie.com/why-this-film I am proud to say that I contributed $1000 to this movie and I hope you’ll consider supporting it as well. Here are a few of the film festival awards he mentions: Austin Film Festival: https://austinfilmfestival.com/submit/screenplay-and-teleplay-submissions-2/2019-script-competition-semifinalists-second-rounders-2/ We ScreenPlay: https://www.wescreenplay.com/blog/announcing-the-fall-2019-diverse-voices-semifinalists/ Cajardo’s Bio: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1540125/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm  The book that Cajardo and I reference and both appreciate at this time in our lives: The Surrender Experiment Finally -the scholarship I mention in my intro is now called the Megan M. Hottman scholarship at Creighton University School of law and if you’d like to get involved we’d love to have your involvement! My contribution was matched and a few others have also added to it, so we’re now up to $11,200/year for three years! This episode SPONSOR: Aspire Medical Spa ! Well, Steve and I talk about how athletes can use this pause and reset time to really ramp up their ambassador-athlete-brand game in this time of an extended-off-season. How can athletes be better at branding themselves - at leveraging their image and influence? Well - Steve has a few thoughts about that. And spoiler alert: it has a LOT more to do with the athlete as a person and their entire platform, than it does about just the results and performance alone. “I consider myself really lucky and really blessed - to even be on this podcast today. I have this strong desire to get this message out to as many people as possible... if just one person hears this story and can live, I feel like I’ve done the world better.” - Walt Bleser Today’s episode is an interview with my friend Walt. Walt and I met through cycling- specifically, bike racing, back in the early 2000s… probably around 2004, when I was living in Kansas City racing bikes in the midwest and he was doing the same. I moved to Denver in 2006 and a few years later Walt and his wife “Mel B” also moved out here and we’ve been riding bikes ever since. Walt takes part in our Lookout Week every June, and if we get our schedules aligned, we usually nab a few other rides together here or there. Last year, Walt and Mel B welcomed Freddie B into the world, he’s the CUTEST little guy. So yeah - as you’ve probably guessed from the title of this episode, we’re talking about a near-death experience related to heart health… except the catch is this- Walt is HEALTHY. He’s only 40 and he’s been an endurance athlete for the last 20+ years…. cycling, running, skimo …. he’s an exercise fiend. So to say that this problem doesn’t fit the patient, is an under-statement. Hence, our desire to get this message out, in case it does impact you or someone you know. Hopefully this will help you pay closer attention to the subtle warning signs — the signs that Walt tried for a couple years to rationalize away…. Walt also did an article with our friends at 303 Endurance, check that out here: https://303cycling.com/walt-bleser-40-year-old-strong-cyclist-lucky-to-be-alive-heart-attack-barely-prevented-his-story/ Related Books- Haywire Heart by Leonard Zinn –Walt hasn’t read the book yet and it may not even apply to his actual situation, but this also points to the glaring absence / rarity of info about this topic out there. At the end of the day, I’m so glad the stars aligned for Walt to get the care and intervention he needed— there were many opportunities for this to have gone MUCH worse. I’m so thankful he’s been fixed up and is healthy and around to parent that cute new son of his and so stoked to ride LookoutWeek 2020 with him!
