At our upcoming AALC conference later in April, we will be giving away copies of Writing a Letter to the Asian American Church. This book wouldn't have been made possible without Pastor Steve Chang of Living Hope Community Church (SOLA Council Chairman) and Aaron Lee (SOLA Editorial Curator). Aaron and Steve discuss the story behind how the book idea began, and how it all came together. In this episode, we go through the timeline of what has transpired since the LCMS — largely at the behest of Matthew Harrison — published the so-called “Annotated Large Catechism”. The behavior of Synod has been anything but Christian, and wicked deeds should be exposed to the light of day. Satan is on the move, and far too many men in collars are far too willing to do his bidding. Subscribe to the podcast here. Errata At one point, I (Mahler) state that I handed the AALC a hard drive with information pertaining to Jordan Cooper, but I misspoke, because what I handed them was, in fact, a flash drive.
Tom Lin is president and CEO of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He is the author of Pursuing God's Call (2012) and Losing Face, Finding Grace (1996), as well as co-editor of the Urbana Onward book series (2012). Tom Lin spoke during the ninth session of the AALC Conference. His talk was titled, “Resilient Leadership and Submitting our Asian American Idols to the King.” In his talk, Tom Lin asks the question: “What does leadership look like in this post-COVID, cultural moment of the church?” He shares the primary calling of Asian American leaders to submit all of who we are and all of our leadership under the authority of Christ the King. Only then can we respond to two invitations for leaders in this season – resiliency and collaboration in leadership. Watch the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/XYzI1hLldOs
Pastor Cory Ishida was the senior pastor of Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley (Evergreen SGV) for over 40 years before retiring in 2018. He spoke during the eighth session of the AALC Conference. His talk was titled, “The Way of the King.” In his talk, Pastor Cory focused on the moments that Jesus was King here on earth and how it applies to us today as leaders of His Church. Jesus was a manufacturer of furniture. He was a maker of disciples. He was a miracle worker. But he was also a king. Pastor Cory shared examples of kingship from his 42 years of senior pastoral ministry. Watch the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/dDXGU5Y1EQ8
Dr. Christopher Yuan is the author of Holy Sexuality and the Gospel: Sex, Desire, and Relationships Shaped by God's Grand Story. He spoke during the seventh session of the AALC Conference. His talk was titled, “Sexual Identity: False Identity.” In his talk, Christopher Yuan articulated a biblical view of sexuality through the narrative of his personal transformation from an agnostic gay man to a Bible professor. He shared how one of the most important things when engaging with our LGB friends is how sexuality has become the core of our being: “Being gay” means “This is who I am.” But how does the Bible communicate who we are? Dr. Yuan articulates the correct understanding of personhood through the lens of Scripture—particularly the image of God and the doctrine of sin—and explains the consequences of an incorrect understanding of who we are. Kim Kira, the primary teaching elder at Lighthouse Church and SOLA Council member, led the sixth session of the AALC Conference. His exhortative message was titled “Gospel Ministry: More than Evangelism.” In his talk, Kim Kira reminded church leaders that the gospel is not just about changing our eternal destination but changing our hearts. So he exhorted them to develop a culture of care and counseling within their churches. By doing so, church members could help one another find help and hope in Christ “as we see our sin and suffering clearly, but see the gospel clearest of all.” Watch the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/QBiiEzXGNX0

The Asian American (AA) church is good and beautiful, and the calling to minister in the context of an AA church is a wonderful and joyous thing! In addition, the AA church can do community, discipleship, leadership development, and mission in ways that are culturally contextualized, needed, and strategic. Therefore, the AA church ought to be embraced and celebrated! Owen serves as the Senior Pastor of Christ Central Presbyterian Church in Centreville, VA. He received his BA in Rhetoric at U.C. Berkeley and his M.Div at Westminster Seminary, CA. Before his call to serve as the Senior Pastor of Christ Central in 2012, he served as the English Ministry Pastor of New Life Mission Church in Fullerton, CA from 2000 to 2002, and then as the church-planting pastor of New Life Mission Church in Burbank, CA from 2002 to 2011. This podcast is a conversation about the subject of women's ordination. I defend the view of the AALC that ordination is to be limited to properly examined and called men.
In this episode we are continuing our journey of introducing you to key community health partners and resources by introducing you to the leaders behind a statewide nonprofit called The Arizona Alliance for Livable Communities. In case the name didn’t give it away, the AALC focuses on making our communities more livable, more healthy, and more likely to support all aspects of well-being. And they do it by focusing on community design, the built environment, and policy levers like municipal general plans and zoning. In other words, the Arizona Alliance for Livable Communities is all about the intersection of planning and health. On today's program, I was joined by Dr. Curtis E. Leins, the presiding pastor of the AALC, to talk about the American Association of Lutheran Churches. We discussed the history and some of the things happening right now with our church body.
Today's podcast is a Q&A program that covered a large variety of topics. Among them were: discernment ministries, why I don't like getting into the creation debate, the differences between the AALC and the LCMS, and many other important topics.
Today's podcast is a lecture from Dr. Joel Biermann on the subject of humanity in creation. This is a talk given at the 2018 National Convention of the AALC in Minneapolis, MN. It will be followed with three further talks to be uploaded in the future. I have also provided a video of this talk on YouTube.
On this program, I play a lecture from the Rev. Dr. Curtis E Leins who is the presiding pastor of the AALC. This lecture was given at the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in October of 2017. A video is also going to be available on Youtube along with the other talks at the conference.
In today's episode, we interview Geoffrey Blackwell from the American Atheists Legal Center. First, the guys break down the recent lawsuit filed by two LGBTQ advocacy organizations challenging President Trump's tweets regarding transgender service in the military. During the main segment, we ask Geoff what the AALC does, what kinds of cases are on his plate, and whether Trinity Lutheran v. Comer is as bad as we think it is. After that, Andrew answers a question from listener Thomas S. regarding Google's firing of an employee who wrote a bizarre, 10-page anti-woman manifesto. Finally, we end with an all-new Thomas Takes the Bar Exam Question #36 about defamation. Remember that you can play along with #TTTBE by retweeting our episode Tweet along with your guess. We'll release the answer on next Tuesday's episode along with our favorite entry! Recent Appearances None! Have us on your show! Show Notes & Links Give Geoff's podcast, All Too Common Law, a listen! Here is a link to the Doe v. Trump lawsuit filed Aug. 9, 2017 challenging Trump's tweets. This is the Slate piece calling the lawsuit "ingenious"; Andrew disagrees. And this is the (weird) Mattis internal DOD memo about "ethics" to which the guys refer during the show. Finally, this is the Google manifesto referred to during the "C" segment of the show. My latest guest for 'On the Issues' is Frederic C. Hof, director of the Atlantic Council's Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East and a specialist on Syria. Prior to becoming director, he was a resident senior fellow with the Center. On March 28, 2012 President Obama conferred on Hof the rank of ambassador in connection with his new duties as special adviser for transition in Syria. Hof was previously the special coordinator for regional affairs in the US Department of State's Office of the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, where he advised Special Envoy George Mitchell on the full range of Arab-Israeli peace issues falling under his purview and focusing on Syria-Israel and Israel-Lebanon matters. He joined the State Department in 2009 after serving as the president and CEO of AALC, limited company, an international business consulting and project finance firm formerly known as Armitage Associates LC. Hof's professional life has focused largely on the Middle East. In 2001 he directed the Jerusalem field operations of the Sharm el-Sheikh Fact-Finding Committee headed by former US Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell and was the lead drafter of the Committee's 2001 report. In 1983, as a US Army officer, he helped draft the "Long Commission" report, which investigated the October 1983 bombing of the US Marine headquarters at Beirut International Airport. Both reports drew considerable international praise for fairness and integrity. A 1969 graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Hof began his professional career as an Army officer. He is a Vietnam veteran and served as a US Army Middle East Foreign Area Officer, studying Arabic at the Foreign Service Institute in Tunisia and receiving a master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School. He served as US Army attaché in Beirut, Lebanon and later in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as director for Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestinian Affairs. Hof has written extensively on Arab-Israeli issues. He is the author of Galilee Divided: The Israel-Lebanon Frontier, 1916-1984 (Westview Press, 1985); Line of Battle, Border of Peace? The Line of June 4, 1967 (Middle East Insight, 1999); and Beyond the Boundary: Lebanon, Israel and the Challenge of Change (Middle East Insight, 2000). He has also written many articles on Jordan Valley water issues. His writing on the Israel-Syria, Israel-Lebanon, and (by virtue of his work on the "Mitchell Committee") Israel-Palestinian tracks of the Middle East peace process has contributed positively to the body of literature promoting Arab-Israeli peace. His awards include the Purple Heart, the Department of State Superior Honor Award, the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, and the Defense Superior Service Medal. He resides in Silver Spring, Maryland with his wife, Brenda. A full transcript of this conversation is available here: http://alonben-meir.com/audio/issues-episode-9-frederic-c-hof/
