Just in time for Remembrance Day, we tell the story of a Collingwood veteran, Captain Alan Telfer, whose time in the service during World War 1 took him to fascinating locations on multiple continents and embroiled him in the very stuff of later Hollywood movies. From England and France to India and Palestine, from trench warfare to espionage and Lawrence of Arabia ... see how this Collingwood native left his mark on the world. Following the story we invite our listeners to join us at the Collingwood museum over the month of November to see three temporary exhibits all related to the legacies of Canada's military history and the stories of local men and women who served their country. Each exhibit builds upon the others in a very profound and meaningful way. We also highlight a very special Collector's Night in partnership with the Collingwood Legion, to be held on November 21 at the Legion's Military Museum. fWotD Episode 2642: Yugoslav monitor Sava Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 29 July 2024 is Yugoslav monitor Sava. The Yugoslav monitor Sava is a Temes-class river monitor that was built for the Austro-Hungarian Navy as SMS Bodrog. She fired the first shots of World War I just after 01:00 on 29 July 1914, when she and two other monitors shelled Serbian defences near Belgrade. She was part of the Danube Flotilla, and fought the Serbian and Romanian armies from Belgrade to the mouth of the Danube. In the closing stages of the war, she was the last monitor to withdraw towards Budapest, but was captured by the Serbs when she grounded on a sandbank downstream from Belgrade. After the war, she was transferred to the newly created Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia), and renamed Sava. She remained in service throughout the interwar period, although budget restrictions meant she was not always in full commission.During the German-led Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in April 1941, Sava served with the 1st Monitor Division. Along with her fellow monitor Vardar, she laid mines in the Danube near the Romanian border during the first few days of the invasion. The two monitors fought off several attacks by the Luftwaffe, but were forced to withdraw to Belgrade. Due to high river levels and low bridges, navigation was difficult, and Sava was scuttled on 11 April. Some of her crew tried to escape cross-country towards the southern Adriatic coast, but all were captured prior to the Yugoslav surrender. The vessel was later raised by the navy of the Axis puppet state known as the Independent State of Croatia and continued to serve as Sava until the night of 8 September 1944 when she was again scuttled.Following World War II, Sava was raised once again, and was refurbished to serve in the Yugoslav Navy from 1952 to 1962. She was then transferred to a state-owned company that was eventually privatised. In 2005, the government of Serbia granted her limited heritage protection after citizens demanded that she be preserved as a floating museum, but little else was done to restore her at the time. In 2015, the Serbian Ministry of Defence and Belgrade's Military Museum acquired the ship. She was restored by early 2019 and opened as a floating museum in November 2021.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:49 UTC on Monday, 29 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Yugoslav monitor Sava on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Gregory.

LIBERTY IN AMERICA - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE: A PRESCRIPTION FOR AMERICA by Dr. Bill Choby. In Liberty in America: Past, Present, and Future, renowned dentist and health policy expert Dr. Bill Choby presents how America, as the empire of liberty, has achieved freedom through the Godliness and goodness of its citizens. Providing an essential insight into America’s past, it demonstrates how the country’s great forefathers fought against an oppressive government and sought freedom from political bondage through their selflessness and God-fearing personalities. Dr. Choby also seeks to distinguish liberalism from liberty and define what true liberty is by highlighting what made the American government unique in all of history—faith, courage, discipline, and personal sacrifice. In this book, he offers the ongoing challenges faced by freedom in the present and how the American people can secure the blessings of liberty for the future generations Although Dr. Bill Choby is a practicing implant surgeon and dentist in Greensburg, PA. he also has been a first-person re-enactor of a middle-aged Col. George Washington reflecting on his adventures during the French and Indian War. The connection between Col. Washington and Dr. Choby is a common interest for mounted fox hunting, a love of God and country, and a nearly identical physical stature of 6’3” and 225 lbs. The euphoria rush of galloping over hill and dale in pursuit of a pack of hounds is a treasured shared experience with G.W. As Col. Washington, Bill has been a frequent sight riding his horse in the Fort Ligonier Days parades. Bill has given first-person presentations at school assemblies, Pennsylvania’s Military Museum, civic luncheons, church assemblies, tea parties, and the numerous reenactments commemorating the French and Indian War in Western Pennsylvania. Bill was also the standing model for John Buxton’s 250th anniversary commemorative painting of Washington crossing the Allegheny River in December of 1753. Bill’s replica uniform was custom made from an actual portrait of Col. Washington by Charles Wilson Peale painted in 1772. Bill added his own custom riding boots just like George would have used. https://www.amazon.com/Liberty-America-Past-Present-Future/dp/1452000832 www.silverliteraryagency.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/sillit101.mp3

Arizona National Guard Historical Society The Arizona Military Museum is operated by the Arizona National Guard Historical Society, a private non-profit corporation. The officers and directors serve as docents, and they perform other necessary functions in conjunction with National Guard support to operate and maintain the museum. The Historical Society’s purposes are: “To enhance the appreciation of the military history of Arizona and the contributions of the Militia of Arizona and the Arizona National Guard to the State of Arizona and to the Nation…” (Bylaws, Article I, Section 1). To accomplish its purposes, the Historical Society shall strive: “…to discover and memorialize the history of the Military of Arizona, the Arizona National Guard, and the general military history of Arizona, and to establish and maintain a museum on land leased, owned, or otherwise controlled by the Society.” (Id.). The policy statement states that the Historical Society is “…to portray events, persons, and other historical information relating to…the military service of Arizonans in wars and other military actions in Arizona and around the world”. On September 30, 2006, the Arizona Military Museum celebrated its 25th anniversary. The museum building is a significant part of Arizona's military history. The raw adobe building was constructed in 1936 as a Depression-era public works project. It served as a National Guard arsenal until World War II, when it was converted into a maintenance shop for German prisoners of war confined at a nearby POW camp. Arizona Military Museum 5636 E. Daniel Baisden and Becky Brown-Hogan received the medals on their fathers' behalf. A new report has found that donations to charity from home and abroad surpassed the 100 billion yuan mark last year, without any major disasters occurring during the period. The figure is roughly 16 billion U.S. dollars. However, according to the annual charity report, donations from the public only accounted for 11 percent, dropping for a third consecutive year. The report was released by the China Charity and Donation Information Center, an organization affiliated with the Ministry of Civil Affairs. It has researched charity donations and issued annual reports since 2008. China received around 104 billion yuan in total donations, accounting for 0.2 percent of the nation's GDP last year. The largest single donation in China's history was made in April 2014, when Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma and Vice-Chairman Joe Tsai together donated 2 percent of Alibaba's stock rights to establish a charitable trust fund, accounting for almost 25 billion yuan calculated by the share prices at that time.
