Whale and dolphin researcher, Barry McGovern's love of sea creatures started in Clare, Ireland, when as a child he met the county's solitary, friendly dolphin, named for the singer Dusty Springfield.Barry grew up in a tiny surfing village where he knew all the bird calls off by heart. His interest in animal science led him to Edinburgh Zoo, where he fed cassowaries and regularly, accidentally spooked a flock of Chilean flamingos. He assisted on a mammal research trip in Namibia, where he learned just how many people are required to take biopsy sample from a giraffe. Eventually he settled on whales, and he learned the lesson that while animals can be lots of fun to study, they come with a heavy research load, and not much time spent out in the wild.Barry has been slapped in the face by a whale's tail and watched mother humpback whales squirt-feed their calves breast milk like cottage cheese. And he couldn't be happier. Today, Barry works at the Pacific Whale Foundation, Australia. This episode was produced by Alice Moldovan. Conversations' EP is Nicola Harrison. In this powerful episode, we're joined by Kevin Lowe, an inspirational speaker and podcast host who shares his remarkable journey of losing his sight at 17 and discovering an entirely new way to "see" the world. Through launching his own travel agency, creating a podcast during the pandemic, learning how to 'see' through sound and now inspiring others through speaking, Kevin exemplifies resilience in its purest form. His personal equation—"faith plus family equals a life worth living"—reminds us all to identify what gives our lives meaning, especially during our darkest moments. Kevin's story isn't just about overcoming blindness—it's about transforming limitation into possibility and finding purpose in pain. As he puts it, "Through the vulnerability of the brain that I became blind, but it's also through the power of the brain that I learned to see again." Follow Kevin's journey on his podcast "Grit, Grace and Inspiration" or learn more about his speaking at kevinspeaks.org. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I love the recording of bats in a cave because it's a reminder that heritage isn't just about monuments and structure, but about life and the continuation of both humans and animals to exist within ancient landscapes. As an artist who uses a lot of convolutional reverb in my work, I love the idea of taking a huge natural space and augmenting that natural reverb into something otherworldly.  "To make the composition, I wanted to create a sense of movement, so I used delays that travel within the stereo field and also manipulated the panning of the recording itself to wander about. I have memories of seeing fruit bats in the Seychelles at dusk, and the wonderful smell of guava in the air as they fed in the trees. It's a time when I felt extremely calm and alive amongst the stresses of my life at the time. Both nature and music and essential to my mental wellbeing.  "I'm currently working as my alter ego Elim Rae with film maker and writer Joe French on more traditional songs. These have their roots in wellbeing, healing from trauma and the joy of existing in nature. I used some guitar harmonics Joe played for one of our tracks to suggest the pings of echo location within the expanse of the bat cave. I loved the idea of pulling threads of another collaboration into this one, to enhance the sense of connectedness with my experience of the word." Canadian bird flu case raises potential pandemic concernsA teen in BC critically ill with H5N1 bird flu has raised concerns about a new pandemic, since it's not clear how they acquired the virus. Researchers are closely monitoring the virus as it spreads, primarily among animals for changes that could indicate it spreading more easily in humans. Matthew Miller, the Canada Research Chair of Viral Pandemics from McMaster University, says the timing of this case is particularly concerning given the potential for influenza viruses to mix now that we're heading into flu season and wild birds are migrating. Sighted and blind people can learn to echolocate equally wellEcholocation — using sound reflections to sense surroundings — is best known among animals like bats and dolphins. But many blind people have also learned to echolocate, and a new study has shown that sighted people can learn to do it just as effectively as those without sight. Dr. Lore Thaler, a professor in psychology and director of the human echolocation lab at Durham University in England, and her team published their findings in the journal Cerebral Cortex. An elephant's shower shows sophisticated tool useAn elephant at the Berlin Zoo has learned to manipulate hoses to wash herself, and is fascinating researchers, including Humboldt University PhD student Lena Kaufmann, who is investigating tool use in non-human animals. In a recent study, published in the journal Current Biology, Kaufmann and colleagues gave Mary the elephant different hoses to test her abilities, and she quickly either adapted to use the hoses to meet her end goal, or got frustrated when the hoses didn't work and bit the hose in anger. What's also interesting is a companion pachyderm that has apparently learned to sabotage these showers by kinking the hose. Pesticides used on farms attract bumblebee queens, not to their benefitResearchers were surprised and disturbed to discover that in tests, young queen bumblebees hibernated in pesticide-contaminated soils. During her PhD studies at the University of Guelph, Dr. Sabrina Rondeau found that bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) queens seemed to prefer soil samples containing pesticides, even when presented with a pesticide free soil option. They're not clear on why the bees would prefer soils with pesticides, but are concerned with the impact this might have on their reproduction and survival. The study is published in the journal Science of the Total Environment.A writer speaks for the trees, and says we have much in common with themThere are about three trillion trees on our planet — about four hundred for each of us. And we literally couldn't live without them. They take in millions of tons of carbon dioxide each year, and provide us with oxygen. Saving our forests is a big step toward saving our planet from the challenges from climate change. Dr. Daniel Lewis, an environmental historian at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California writes about just twelve of the the most exotic, important and interesting species we share the Earth with in his book The Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of our Future.

In this episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty had the pleasure of speaking with two talented children's book authors - Michelle Schaub and Ty Trotter.  Michelle Schaub shared insights into her two latest books, "A Place for Rain" and "Leafy Landmarks: Travels with Trees." "A Place for Rain" is a lyrical story about a classroom that comes together to build a rain garden, teaching kids about the importance of green infrastructure and capturing rainwater to prevent pollution. Michelle emphasized her goal of empowering young readers to take small, impactful actions to help the environment.  "Leafy Landmarks" is a unique poetry collection that takes readers on a family road trip to visit historic and remarkable trees across the United States. Michelle drew from her own childhood memories, like climbing a beloved sycamore tree in college, to inspire the book's warm, personal tone. Listeners were fascinated to learn about "Moon Trees" - tree seeds that were sent to space and then planted back on Earth. Debut author Ty Trotter discussed his new picture book, "Welcome to My World," which celebrates diversity and educates children about different experiences of visual impairment. Ty's personal connection to the topic, as the child of blind parents, shines through. The book covers techniques like echolocation that some visually impaired people use to navigate the world. Ty's goal is to inspire empathy, understanding and open communication between sighted and visually impaired individuals. Both Michelle and Ty's books offer valuable lessons for young readers, whether it's environmental stewardship or embracing human differences. Their passion for creating meaningful, impactful children's literature is truly inspiring. Echolocation is a noun that refers to the location of objects by reflected sound.  Our word of the day combines two words of Greek origin. Echo, which refers to the reflection of sound that occurs when sound bounces off a surface, and location, which means ‘place.' Animals like bats that possess the ability to locate things without seeing, are skilled at echolocation. Here's an example of its use: Learning about bats at school was both fascinating and disappointing. It was fascinating to learn about the echolocation that these animals do because of their limited vision. But it was disappointing to not learn anything about Batman.

As we walk through Scripture and walk through the story of our church, we'll also consider the story of our neighborhood, Walnut Hills, and the way it has shaped our ministry journey. Find where your own faith journey intersects with ours. Sermon by: Kelly CarrConnect with us: echochurch.org

Ever imagined navigating the world of podcasting without sight? Blind podcaster Kevin Lowe is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Stripped of his eyesight due to a brain tumor at the age of 17, Kevin has not only overcome his limitations, but he continues to shine a positive light and inspire those who are fortunate enough to cross his path. In this episode, we discuss the challenges Kevin has endured in the creator space as a result of his disabilities, how he continues to thrive in building his brand and business despite these challenges, the unbelievable technique he studied that allowed him to unlock an untapped section of the human brain and see in a whole new way (the same way bats do!), and so much more! Despite losing his sight after a life-saving brain tumor surgery in 2003 at age 17, Kevin Lowe embodies leadership by example as a Life & Business Coach and host of the Grit, Grace, & Inspiration podcast. Kevin's unique perspective and valuable insights on resilience, perseverance, and embracing the beauty of life's challenges empowers his audience to overcome their own challenges and achieve their fullest potential. Through his inspiring story and contagious optimism, Kevin is redefining what it means to live a life well-lived – one where leaving a positive impact and making a difference in the lives of others matters more than anything else.CONNECT FURTHER WITH GUEST:Website: https://www.gritgraceinspiration.com Live Challenge July 17-21, 2023: https://gritgraceinspiration.com/challenge (referral: ANGIE)Podcast: https://apple.co/3O2TZkbInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/gritgraceinspiration Connect on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kevin.lowe.754CONNECT FURTHER WITH ANGIE:Podcast: https://www.yougetwhatimsaying.com Listen Early and Dynamic Ad-Free on Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/44Y6rbYSocial Media: https://beacons.ai/theactualangie/socialmedia Contact: yougetwhatimsaying.podcast@gmail.com Monetize Your Podcast: https://beacons.ai/theactualangie/monetizeSupport the Show: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/yougetit/membershipPARTNER:This podcast is recorded using Riverside.
