Matt Dye and Adam Keith discuss a recent study by Dr. Craig Harper on deer bedding blocks using hinge cuts and canopy manipulation. The study, conducted in Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, involved 3, 10-acre hardwood blocks with 10-acre treatment areas and 5-acre control areas. Deer activity increased significantly, with daily detections rising from 1.4 to 7.5 after treatment. The study found a 435% increase in deer activity in treated areas and a 41% decrease in predator detections. They emphasize the importance of strategic placement and management of bedding thickets for effective deer hunting.

Adam talks about growing up and the different stages he went through on his way to being someone who is concerned with the land around him. As he grew he noticed some of the animals he loved hunting started to suffer and he started thinking of what he could do to help, thus starting that transition for him. We get into the turkey population issue a bit and go through our opinions as to why they might be suffering. Adam also talks about a few things someone who is new to land management can do to help their property for all types of wildlife. Product has been pushed over the past few decades to hunters when natural habitat manipulation is far more important. If the week couldn't get any better, the same morning that Michael Schupbach (brother-in-law) killed, Adam Keith also tagged out on a fine Missouri 8-pointer. This buck came in right at daylight and worked a scrape over hard. Thrashing antlers, breaking limbs, and pawing the ground, he did it all at just 35 yards. After looking over the buck Adam decided it was an go-time. A well-placed shot with the Deer Season XP Copper Impact only allowed the buck travel 35 yards. After we all were able to get hands-on this buck, we identified him as a buck Matt had an encounter with last year during late bow season. Although the encounter took place close to where he was harvested, the buck has been seen on camera many hundreds of yards away and by a surveyor, as this buck chased does in the pasture in the other direction. We know very little about where this buck summered, but we know the last two falls, he was a regular, but a regular with a big range! It was anyones guess which camera location this buck would show up at next. It's always enjoyable to have success each season, but it's special to connect the dots with a familiar buck! #ForLoveoftheLand Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

This week's podcast is special as you will hear from two different groups of Land & Legacy hunters hitting the turkey woods. This Part 1 podcast is focused around the scouting, land management, and hunting strategy leading into the opener of turkey season. One team will consist of Seth Harker, Trace Harker and Matt Dye, while in an adjoining county, Adam Keith and Chad Keith will be joining forces. This is no competition, however, just two farms that require two different strategies to not only scout effectively, but to also hunt. First, you will hear from Seth and Matt and how they plan to capitalize on consistent images from the Cuddelink system. However, despite several years of success from this location, a massive habitat management project just went underway. So this will surely plan into the setup and hunt. In contrast, Chad and Adam are hunting a cattle farm with tillable acres and large pastures. The turkey numbers are high, but the consistent changes of cattle, farmers harvesting, spraying, etc, may play into the strategy of the hunt. So we just got together and said, “Let’s do a little series this spring,” and that’s what we’re doing. And today is Part 1 and this is land management, Part 2 is going to come up later on and we’re going to talk about food plots with Land & Legacy. But today we’re going to break it down in three parts. We’re going to break it down into, one, why land management. Two, boots on the ground. And, three, the plan. And it will be a 30-minute segment, so I’m going to break them up into three different segments for your listening to make it easier so you don’t have to listen to the whole thing straight through and wonder, “Oh, I want to get back to that place.” So we’re going to make it easy. On today's episode I continue the conversation with Matt Dye and Adam Keith of the Land & Legacy podcast about what it takes to grow, hold, and harvest big bucks on a regular basis. We discuss the big buck equation and what necessities a whitetail buck needs in order to get to big buck status. Those topics include nutrition, age, and security along with a variety of subcategories. My Cube, the new album by Cube (a.k.a. Oakland resident Adam Keith), begins with "First," somehow a lethal subconscious variation on "Undercover of the Night" that's built on shaky ever-shifting soil, on tape jams and spool tangles. The potential for electronic collapse is as real as the possibility of total alignment. Screws are loosened just to see if they'll stay and for how long. It's a rowdy entrance, tipping its cap for turbulence and saying, "Howdy, you can relax now, you're in it already." Cube's guest mix is not a giveaway as to why any of this happens.
