Afie Jurvanen – more famously known as Bahamas! A fascinating artist and human. Never satisfied to remain in the same groove or attitude. What's constant is his ability to create memorable songs, surrounded by sonic texture that is his territory alone. You know it's him as soon as you hear the song. He'll be doing summer festivals and supporting his album Bootcut - a heavily inspired classic Country record which has recently seen his catalogue surpass a billion streams. He was awarded a pile of gold/platinum/double platinum singles while attending the JUNOs this year. . Rolling Stone covered Bootcut saying that a Canadian indie rock kid made one of Nashville's most Country records of the year: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/bahamas-bootcut-country-music-album-nashville-1234826097/ Oh..and he was featured on The Bachelor and released an album on Valentine's day called Repackaged Love Songs. And best of all, he's guesting on Mulligan Stew Saturday 4 Pacific / 5 Mtn at CKUA RADIO ckua.com
Remember when Easy Listening became the Smooth Jazz section of pop and rock n' roll? But maybe we could use things a little easier these days. In the second part of my epic talk with Bahamas from his cozy cottage in Nova Scotia - we lean into embracing that softer side of ourselves as songwriters, fathers and edgy citizens just trying to make sense of a changing world. Afie Jervanen isn't shy about it: he would LOVE his records to be in the Easy Listening section of your local record store. While Afie's newest record Bootcut may seem like a warm country-tinted collection that you can safely put on in the background at a dinner party with everyone wearing turtlenecks and sweatpants - underneath, there are needles and shards of memory glass sticking up through the softness. Look no further than “Sports Car” maybe about his absent father who would have preferred a fast muscle car to a new kid in the house - or “Gone Girl Gone” the banger of the LP which takes a squinting look at what that crazy (but exciting) ex is up to now (yes he references Only Fans). Wonder how that one went over at his Opry debut a few months back? Feel free to dive into the first part of our conversation to jump into more songs from Bootcut or stay right here as Afie and I discuss how travel, social media and the tricky financial realities of being a touring musician and dad mess with our sense of self as partners, fathers and creators - and how the music can always be there like a magic potion - no matter who you choose to be in the future.
What's the first thing you think about a mustachioed songwriter who enjoys rocking wind-breaker sweat suits and lives and creates on the edge of icy Nova Scotia? That he's going to write maybe the best old-school Nashville country record of the year, of course. Maybe the warm, slightly humorous diversion is right in his tropical name. But with his newest LP Bootcut, beloved Canadian singer-songwriter and ace guitarist Afie Jurvanen AKA Bahamas might have thrown some long-time listeners (like this podcaster) for a loop by channeling his inner Alan Jackson and George Strait, but in a nice, warm way. I'll admit I was concerned at first. Must everyone go country? Sliding steel guitars, twangy solos, his signature low-drawl and gorgeous lady-led harmonies? You bet. But it feels serenely natural on him. And yes, Bahamas did make his Opry debut a few months back so he is fully diving in and it shows. In this first part of our dive into Bootcut and beyond - we hear how Bahamas brings his daughters into his songwriting, how he's had to let go of his younger “hunk” guitarist roots and how he's connected being a songwriter and a quirky online “content-creator” into his art. In these fractious times, especially as the seasons get darkest - maybe we all need a new LP that doesn't try and reinvent every sonic wheel or show off with shredding guitar histrionics (he used to tour with Feist) and rapid-fire poetic gymnastics. Is Bootcut like a warm hug reaching out from your car speakers? Maybe. Try listening to the heartfelt, soft opener “Just A Song” and the yearning piano-ballad closer “Nothing Blows My Mind” - to hear how he's trying to be at peace with the chaos and mystery of being a father, a son and a citizen who is just doing his damn best. With his second time here on our show, it's easy to hear how comfortable Afie has gotten in his skin. Thankfully, his music has never been better.

Afie Jurvanen, better known as Bahamas, joins me on the show today. Afie has made 6 records as Bahamas, and the newest one, “Bootcut”, just came out a few weeks ago. It's a great record with inventive melodies, killer guitar playing and singing, and I guess will be sort of pinned as his “country” record, although I don't think it's that. But he did make it in Nashville, and used a bunch of seasoned session players for the recordings, including Vince Gill, Dave Roe and Russ Pahl on steel (who's been on this show), so it has some country flavor. But Afie's vision is to incorporate elements of country music into what he does without changing his own approach or sound that much, and it works really well. Afie has always made interesting choices when making records - almost as if he's challenging himself and working out of his comfort zone. We talk a bit about his “Earthtones” album, which features Pino Paladino on bass and James Gadson on drums, and how touring as a duo for years influenced his guitar selection. We get into Nacho Guitars, fuzz tones and how Feist helped him developed a quieter, more intimate way of singing. Afie also spent some time as a side-guy and did a bunch of sessions around his old hometown of Toronto through the early 2000's before landing a touring gig with Feist. But after that he set out on his own and that's where the Bahamas adventure begins with “Pink Strat” in 2009 and continues through to the new album. You can keep up to date with his touring at bahamasmusic.netPlease enjoy my conversation with Bahamas!Be sure to listen to the Accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Considering how much he shares of himself through his frank, tender songs, and how down-to-earth and open he is in live performance and in conversation, Doug Paisley has always seemed to be a bit of an enigma. For one thing, his music seems so truly timeless. It's like the Toronto troubadour's lastest album Say What You Like could just as easily have been released in 1973 as in 2023. His unique blend of the cryptic and plainspoken - along with the specific, cinematic details - gives the sense that he's on a distinct creative journey of his own, seemingly unrelated to trends in the larger musical world. And yet, there are plenty of luminaries from that larger musical world that have collaborated with Doug on his greatly-acclaimed albums. In the past, Doug's records have been graced by contributions from revered artists like Mary Margaret O'Hara and the keyboard genius from The Band, Garth Hudson. On his new album, Doug's evocative songs, expressive guitar playing, and beautiful tenor voice are treated to some stellar production help from his old friend Afie Jurvanen and his band, Bahamas. On tour through Alberta in summer 2023, Doug Paisley stopped by CKUA's Edmonton studios to serenade us with a pair of songs, and to trace his one-of-a-kind creative career. He told us about his musical beginnings with buck-a-Beatles LP buys; the lasting lessons learned in his early onstage experiences, ranging from bluegrass to reggae to performance art; the influence of everyone from outsider folk great Bonnie “Prince” Billy to ‘70s AM country's “Gentle Giant” Don Williams; the way Afie's and Bahamas' support helped unlock the creative breakthrough of Say What You Like; and how writing songs and playing guitar are a great release for the feelings that move you when, as the title track says, “those bygone times come back to visit.” Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Host: Grant Stovel | Graphics: Shaun Friesen | Music: Doug Hoyer | Sound Engineer: Duke Paetz This episode of Hidden Track features live performances from Doug Paisley. Here's the challenge: how do you distill an artist down to 5 songs for a first time listener? When introducing someone to an artist or band they've never heard, it can be tricky to pick a playlist. Too many songs can overwhelm the listener - so Adrian and Leon have developed the technique of choosing five for the unfamiliar. Five songs that impart a sense of what the artist is about. Not your five favourite songs. Not the five best songs. Five songs that hint at the flavour of the artist without delivering the full course. If done correctly it should be enough to leave them wanting more if they like what they're presented with. This is the experiment: to pick only five songs of an artist you love that are tailored to hook the uninitiated. In this episode, your hosts put this into practice for each other. Adrian recommends the cool, catchy compositions of Bahamas. Leon recommends the esoteric, sonorous sounds of Beirut. Both artists filed under the letter 'B'. Both artists with monikers you'll find on the world map. Featured Songs: Bahamas No Expectations from Earthtones, 2018 Caught Me Thinking from Barchords, 2012 Lost in the Light from Barchords, 2012 Never Again from Barchords, 2012 All the Time from Bahamas is Afie, 2014 Beirut Nantes from The Flying Club Cup, 2007 Postcards From Italy from Gulag Orkestar, 2006 Scenic World from Lon Gisland, 2006 Gibraltar from No No No, 2015 Two Blue Eyes from Berlin- Albuquerque Sessions, 2022 Socials Fb: https://www.facebook.com/supersonicchat Electronic mailing system: supersonicchat@gmail.com The Twits: https://twitter.com/chat_sonic Insta: https://www.instagram.com/supersonicchat --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/supersonicchat/message

This is, I believe, the 4th interview I've had the pleasure of doing with Afie Jurvanen! From the very first listen I heard a unique and gifted singer and songwriter. Blessed with a voice that is like no other and a great personality that allows him to make fun of himself – in song. Ah but what songs. Get prepared to love the songs you love -even more. Imagine the confidence it takes to create music with some of the world's best musicians but doing it long distance in separate studios. Best of all this is just Volume 1. The rest of these sessions may set my hair on fire. Afie takes us through several tracks. How they got recorded and best of all his place in today's music. We also include his Canadian Tour Dates starting in November in Victoria on our website www.mulliganstew.ca Enjoy

PODCAST EXCLUSIVE - Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) - I’ve been fan of Afie’s music for a long time but over the last couple years we've become good friends. I admire and respect Afie a lot and I’m grateful to be able to go to him to have serious conversations about all sorts of things. So, naturally, getting to have this conversation was a real treat. We got into it about the importance of boredom, connecting to the eternal through art, being a motivated parent and more. Also, check out Afie’s new record Sad Hunk, it’s rad.
To launch season four, we bring you a special cross-continent episode with acclaimed Canadian singer and guitarist Afie Jurvanen, known as Bahamas. Born in Ontario and now residing in Nova Scotia, Z. caught up with Afie from LA to discuss his playful and powerful newest record Sad Hunk - how he's transitioned from brooding globe-trotting guitar wiz (he first became known as Feist's right hand man) to a to cheerful, mustachioed family man, breaking out as a solo act making squirmy vocal-rich albums like Barcordes that made him a headliner across Canada, once playing recorder in front of Beyoncé at the Grammys, (the best story of the interview) and how he has let his recent songwriting get more personal and introspective during the 2020 upheaval where he was surrounded by his kids during his writing. Seth and Rob sit down with one of Weiner's absolute favorite musical artists, Bahamas. This is the performance name for Afie Jurvanen, a brilliant Canadian (with strong roots to Finland) singer/songwriter. The band's fifth release, "Sad Hunk" is a continuation of this artist's brilliant studio career. We also hear about the Robbie Robertson and others are among his listeners, how his Nova Scotia province avoided COVID and how much he learned touring with more established artists - particularly Feist.
Afie Jurvanen talks about love, empathy, depression, and his new record Earthtones. The Toronto based musician talks about learning to love his absent father after years of anger, which informed the track “Bad Boys Need Love Too”. “I think there’s probably some way to hold people responsible, and hold people accountable for their actions,” Afie tells Terry, “but do it with empathy, and do it with compassion, and realize we have to live on this planet together. It’s just the realization that things can be done with love as opposed to hate.”

Afie Jurvanen is the man behind Bahamas. Before striking out on his own, Afie cut his teeth playing for Feist, Jason Collette and Zeus and this experience is evident in all aspects of his work. Afie and I crammed ourselves into his tour van after soundcheck with a hot cup of tea. It was fun to test his “Aw shucks” persona when I brought up some strange quotes from his past. Listen to our chat! Tracks played on the show... 1) Bahamas, Barchords “Caught Me Thinkin'” 2) Bahamas, Pink Strat “Hockey Teeth” 3) Bahamas, Barchords “Lost In The Light” 4) Bahamas, Barchords “Your Sweet Touch” ALL songs CANCON
We're really glad to have Bahamas - aka Afie Jurvanen - on this week's show. Bahamas is set to release his third album, Bahamas is Afie, on August 18, 2014 via Universal Music Canada and Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records worldwide. The album title even is a big part of the story here - a symbol of Afie taking ownership of the name Bahamas. It’s a self titled record of sorts, that for lack of a better term is kind of a revealing moment in his career which has come with some high acclaim both here in Canada and the US and overseas. The music is expansive, thoughtful, full of huge catchy hooks that are at the same time beautiful and a really fun listen. He also unleashes some incredible guitar playing to boot. Be sure to keep an eye for that... We've also got an interview with Nathan Gill, frontman of Charlottetown rock outfit The North Lakes, talking about the band's in-the-works third release. They've had a busy summer, performing tracks from 2012's stellar Grand Prix at fests like Evolve and Big Red Music Festival. And on that note, we also catch up with Jeff Squires and Alex Douglas, two of the organizers behind Big Red Music Festival, which this year brought massive acts like The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, Marianas Trench, Sam Roberts Band, and Lights to Canada's smallest province. Join us for a quick peek behind the scenes of yet another great Canadian music event.
Bahamas is the brainchild of Afie Jurvanen, not exactly a band and not exactly a solo project. Bahamas latest CD is called Barchords, the record is an intimate affair where the song and the singer are at the core. For this session Bahamas is made up of drummer Jason Tait of The Weakerthans fame with vocals by Carleigh Aikins and Felicity Williams and Afie on guitar and vocals.
