Alô, alô! Os nossos corpos não são habitados apenas por nós mesmos. Nós os compartilhamos  com trilhões (!) de microrganismos que vivem praticamente em todas as partes do corpo humano. Cientistas estimam que mais da metade das nossas células não são, de fato, humanas: são células de micróbios, seres vivos microscópicos, como bactérias e fungos. Quando ouvimos falar em micróbios, a nossa primeira reação geralmente é de medo. Afinal, não faz muito tempo que saímos de uma pandemia, né? Porém, apenas uma pequena fração dos microrganismos conhecidos, menos de 1%, causa doenças. A grande maioria desses micróbios desempenha funções essenciais para a nossa saúde e bem-estar. Eles ajudam, por exemplo, na digestão, protegem contra outros microrganismos nocivos e podem até auxiliar na melhora de sintomas de ansiedade e depressão. Devido a todas essas funções, o estudo dessa comunidade de micróbios associada ao corpo humano  (microbioma humano) vem crescendo muito nos últimos anos. Pesquisadores estão tentando entender quem são os microrganismos que vivem nas diferentes partes do nosso corpo, quais moléculas eles produzem e quais funções essas substâncias desempenham. Esse conhecimento é importante não apenas para desenvolver novos medicamentos e melhorar a saúde e o bem-estar da sociedade. Ele também nos ajuda a responder uma pergunta fundamental: já que temos mais células microbianas do que células humanas no nosso corpo, entender essas comunidades é também uma forma de entender quem somos nós.
