Episode 269: Acquiring An Entrepreneurial Business Acumen, Part 3 of 4 How would you rate yourself in these four emotional intelligence areas: social awareness, social skills, self-awareness, and self-management? Jim Conn said he lacked two of the four skills. The consequences have been significant for him, as you will hear. An honest assessment provides an opening for Jim to have some new insights into himself during our conversation about business acumen and situations that test his emotional intelligence. “Self-inquiry helps us recover from habits while reflection helps us recover from thoughtlessness,” writes Deepak Chopra, M.D. (Total Meditation, 2020). Jim reflects on what was underneath his self-proclaimed cockiness and identified what caused him to mess up and burn a bridge in a significant relationship. I felt it was one of those tender moments in the conversation when I would have given Jim a hug. You will learn the meaning of a helpful acronym to investigating your feelings, R.U.L.E.R. We start this conversation where we left off; Jim Conn was forging a comeback over ten years joining Mark Johnson at Rice Lake Weighing Systems, Inc. in Rice Lake, WI. As Vice President of Sales and Distribution, Jim helped build the business from an $8M business to $40M in annual sales with 300 employees and eight salespeople. Jim was the company pilot. In 1985, Jim raised over $500,000 to fly both polls in 11 days with a fellow pilot out of Nigeria. The PolarFlite from the North Pole to the South Pole earned them 16-certified world records. While Jim generated the money, Anita raised their three children: Laurie, Brian, and Jackie. The strain of imbalance takes its toll on the family. Tension grew after the PolarFlite trip with Mark to the breaking point. What broke Jim’s spirit? After Jim resigns, he works with a Venture Capital firm and with partners buys into BW Integrated Systems, an industry leader in the design and manufacture of end-of-line packaging equipment and robotic automation solutions and the execution of integrated packaging systems. The attributes Jim says for its success boiled down to people, products, and performance. Jim’s longtime friend and mentor, Dick Harper, a clinical psychologist, comes into his life again. They work together to implement an open-book management system that attributed to a more empowered workforce. Jim explains how they educated employees on how money was generated in the company and how they used a rating system to reinforce their cultural values. While Jim was there, the revenues went from $7M to $13M with 60 employees. Things did not end well at the end of those five years. Jim forges ahead with his optimism and resiliency. Jim and Stew discuss how to handle roadblocks in business or life. After Jim's Facebook jail sentence, Stew was inspired by Jim's 24 hour turnaround answer to no longer having to rely on social media to go live with podcasts, webinars, and live videos. See Podcast 106 and 106B for more details of that process. But roadblocks can often become Internal Problems without proper preparation and emotionless reactions to them. For instance, most roadblocks can be expected such as knowing the regulations, learning the rules, even facebook jail, computer issues - failing to prepare, having backup, or procrastinating deadlines make these internal problems. They also wonder just how restrictive government officials are going to get as they down society in an effort to confront coronavirus now that San Francisco is ordering residents to shelter in place, groups larger than 10 people are discouraged, and New Jersey is dabbling with curfews. Finally, they weight both sides of the furious political and legal fight in Ohio after Gov. Mike DeWine ordered Tuesday's primary to be postponed.

Widows - have you been finding BIG questions coming up in your mind? The kind of questions we rare ask in the normal hustle bustle of life. But nothing is "normal" anymore for us. After Jim suddenly died and as the weeks began to pass, I started asking the BIG questions. Who am I now? What is the meaning of all this? Why did Jim die when he did? Why am I still here and he’s not? What am I doing here? What’s my purpose? What’s the *MEANING* of all this? Is there really a God with a design and a master plan? The answers did not come all at once. But slowly I was able to start unraveling the answers. It started with toilet paper and a box of jigsaw puzzles. No kidding. Officer Mike Flamion was a nine-year law enforcement veteran when a routine traffic stop changed the trajectory of his life forever. Through their unwavering love, hope and spirit, Mike and his wife Sarah share how they've embraced a new normal + find joy and adventure in every day. Today's conversation will show you that in the midst of the storm, you can choose to dance. SHOW NOTES: July 8, 2016: While making a traffic stop, Mike was shot from behind leaving him paralyzed. Mike miraculously survived thanks to the quick thinking of others immediately after the incident. There weren't any lonely nights: Prayer, family, friends and the support from law enforcement gave the Flamions comfort. Gary Sinise Foundation: St. Louis businessman Jim Shubert is on the Board of Directors at the Gary Sinise Foundation. After Jim's wife learned of the incident, he jumped at the chance to help the Flamions. In 2017, the Gary Sinise Foundation built the Flamions a state-of-the-art smart home that provides Mike some independence. On Live Inspired Podcast ep. 128, Gary Sinise shares about his support for those who sacrifice on our behalf. Listen to ep. 128 here. Physically, Mike still suffers from nerve pain and emotionally it bothers him to rely so much on Sarah, but he has hopes that one day he will be able to dance with Sarah again. Although things have changed, what attracted them to each other hasn't: their personalities and sense of humor are still intact. The Flamions continue to live life to the fullest by sharing their story to remind other's in similar situations that just because you were hurt, doesn't mean you have to stop doing things (they just returned from a trip to Florida!). Sarah feels they owe it those who supported to know how thankful they are. It's their support and those foundations have made their lives easier and they want them to know about how thankful they are. Backstoppers: an organization that provides needed financial assistance to the spouses and dependent children of all first responders who lose their lives or suffer a catastrophic injury in the line of duty in 18 counties in Missouri and Illinois. To learn more or donate, visit their website. What's the best thing that has come out of the "upside down" moment? Sarah: We were moving into a dark time for law enforcement. After this happened, and the community showed such great support, it showed the officers they were appreciated. Mike: Pushed me to see how mentally strong I was to deal with it. It made me realize that I can still go on. Live Inspired Podcast guest Janine Shepard was an Olympic-bound skier before her life-altering accident. Like Mike, Janine too has found a deeper purpose and learned to embrace new possibilities. Meet Janine + hear her story on ep. 53. Live Inspired Podcast guest Christine Caine is a survivor of both sexual abuse and cancer. At 32, she found out she was adopted. She shares how she let go of her history to step into her destiny. Listen to Christine on ep. 82. OFFICER MIKE AND SARAH FLAMION'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Sarah: Since Mike's injury Why Forgive by Johann Christoph Arnold. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Sarah: In general, faith and trust come easy to kids. Mike: As a kid, it was easy to hold someone close to you. When you work in law enforcement it's hard to break that barrier. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Mike: Engagement picture or the cross we bought on vacation. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Mike: A military member that has passed away and tell them how much I appreciate what they've done. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Sarah: My cousin Shelly, shared a lot of marriage and relationship advice like the importance of communication and how loving each other will get us through life's tough times. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Mike: Have fun. Enjoy life because things change. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Sarah: They kept pushing forward. Mike: Look at us now. We're still having fun. *** Did you enjoy today's episode? Often, we talk about the wood, but how often do we talk about the equipment that makes the #woodpreneur life possible? Connor Crook from Diamondback ToolBelts is here to talk about just that! Majority owner and president since 2016, Connor runs the marketing, sales, dealer, and product development for the company. However, the company itself was started in 1994 by Jim Skelton and it just so happens that Connor was able to track down his family just a few months ago to get the company's origin story. It turns out that Jim was a true adventurer and spent his days windsurfing, mountain climbing, cross country skiing, and working as a master carpenter. It was after an injury set him back physically that he set about designing a tool belt that would help him with his back pain. After developing his prototypes based off of equipment he had used while windsurfing, he created the belt using cutting edge materials and then put an ad in the paper. Shortly thereafter, Jim, his wife, and children started off making each belt by hand and selling them out of their garage. After Jim passed away in 2004, the company switched hands several times until 2016 when Connor purchased the business. Knowing the product was an incredible item, Connor started working with factories in Wisconsin and North Carolina and expanded the company exponentially. While still hand-made in the USA, Diamondback Toolbelts are now manufactured in bulk and no longer require a 9 month wait for completion! The growth of Diamondback Toolbelts: Continuing to make a high quality and consistent product is the company's current goal.Diamondback Toolbelts now has over 30 dealers internationally. Not only do they still make toolbelts, they also make accessories and related items.Helping woodworkers and laborers step up to the next step in their passion is what Diamondback Toolbelts does best. Episode 216: Jim Collins – How To Go From Good To Great Show Notes: Sustained Excellence: Never go to a meeting without writing down 5 questions prior to the meeting Always follow up the meeting with at least a page of notes -- Share those with your mentor What made you say yes to The Learning Leader Show after 2 1/2 years? It requires intense focus to prepare This is a teaching moment Only say yes if it's going to be impactful. The team determined this show was the right place to do that Always ask yourself -- "How can I make myself useful to the world?" This was advice originally given to him by Peter Drucker A great teacher can change your life in 30 seconds -- Peter Drucker did that for Jim "I am constitutionally unemployable" -- Why Jim feels this about himself His curiosity has led to the success and most importantly... Great questions like: How to turn something into an enduring great company? How someone or a company can go from Good To Great? Jim most admired Peter Drucker when he was 35 years old... The story of their first meeting and how Peter was the curious one... Kept peppering Jim with questions to start the conversation (much like Jim did to me to start this conversation) "The ultimate zen master with bamboo stick" Drucker - "It seems to me that you spend a lot of time worrying if you will survive. You probably will survive. You seem to focus a lot on the question, "how to be successful?" That is the wrong question. The right question is "How to be useful?" What would it have cost Jim to not publish Good To Great after he finished the manuscript? -- More than $100m. He had to get it out in the world. He felt it was his responsibility to do so... Another great mentor said to Jim... "When seeking an entrepreneurial path... Cut off all other options and GO." "Everything is driven by by questions" Can a good company become a great company? How? Level 5 Leader Starts with confronting the brutal facts Personal humility and professional will Not what, but who -- Get the right people on the bus Does not happen in one fell swoop or a leap. It happens over time. Flywheel -- Create momentum Understand the hedgehog concept -- An expert in one thing... Knows it very well 3 Parts of the Hedgehog concept Deeply passionate about it Encoded for it... You're really good at it. An expert Economically, you can make money from it Level 5 Leaders: What cause do I serve? Humility to serve... It's not about them Willful -- Able to make difficult decisions For the best Level 5 Leaders... How do they sustain it? It's easier for them because they understand their personal hedgehog -- It helps them remain renewed after many years "Measured Risk" vs. "Burn The Boats" Fire Bullets... Then Cannon Balls For Jim, this was his first two books + his time as a professor at Stanford before he decided to leave to start his own company You must navigate your path. It doesn't mean you take unfounded risk... Fire bullets first, then cannonballs "If you never fire a cannonball, you'll never make it. "BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) How to write a good one? Take calibrated, calculated risk -- Have things to keep you alive even if everything goes wrong Productive Paranoia Validation - What are points of success you can look to? Jim's wife Joann committing to winning an Ironman race... She was a consultant at the time. She was also a runner. She tried biking and was very good at it. Eventually she practiced, took measured risks, and won the Ironman race "If you were a trial attorney and had to win the case, what evidence would you use?" The Flywheel principle and putting it to use for Jeff Bezos and the Amazon team -- How could they build momentum? After Jim met with Jeff Bezos and his leadership team in 2001, Amazon executives were elated; according to several members of the team at the time, they felt that, after five years, they finally understood their own business. Most important for young leaders -- Jim's advice "FIRST WHO, THEN WHAT?" Who do you want to mentor you? Who do you want to mentor? Who do you want to be your friends? Who do you want to work with? Who do you want to spend time with? The most important question is WHO You don't need to answer WHAT until you answer WHO "The most important question is WHO. First WHO, then WHAT. Who will be your mentor? Who will be your friends? Who will you help? Who will you spend time with? You don't need to answer what until well after you've answered WHO." Tegan is out of office. She's at Colossalcon having a grand time while Rocky and Brian endeavor to hold down the fort. That was probably their first mistake as this is a podcast and not a fort. Hold that L boys. Thankfully, Jim Sterling hangs out for a bit and talks tabletop role-playing, Friday the 13th, changes at Steam and easy mode in Dark Souls and Monster Hunter. There is also considerable effort devoted to examining why werewolves suck and are not good. Basically fuck werewolves. After Jim heads out Rocky and Brian tumble headlong into the darkest timeline and discover that Square Enix has always and will always hate them and most other news is terrible. At least Pyre has a release date.
After Jim has a mini-existentialist criss of the film criticism kind, he manages to (maybe) say a few coherent things here and there about Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...And Spring. But only a few.
Jim McIlvaine used to play professional basketball but now he runs the social media and web-presence for Optima Batteries.
