Train Your Brain to Master Focus, Learn Faster, Achieve Goals and Become Limitless!   One of the world's leading experts in brain performance, mental fitness and memory improvement joins me on the show today. But, these credentials would have seemed downright impossible years ago. I say this because Jim Kwik experienced a severe childhood brain injury that left him with massive learning challenges so much so that he was told that he had a broken brain.   Jim refused to let that label define him and gravitated heavily towards comic books to inspire him to achieve the unthinkable, unimaginable and impossible. When Jim was a freshman in college an unsung hero came into his life to help guide him on the path of personal development, growth, and reading.   He then became enamored with teaching himself “how to learn” and the rest is history. Kwik then created strategies to dramatically enhance his cognitive performance and has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their true genius and brainpower.   He is CEO of Kwik Learning, the premiere online accelerated learning academy with students in 195 countries. His clients include Google, Virgin, Nike, Zappos, SpaceX, Wordpress, Cleveland Clinic, Caltech, Harvard and Singularity University. Kwik is the author of the NY Times and #1 WSJ bestseller: “Limitless - Upgrade Your Brain, Learn Anything Faster, Unlock Your Exceptional Life.”   He is the host of the acclaimed “Kwik Brain” podcast, which is consistently the top educational training show on iTunes with tens of millions of downloads. Our mission today is to provide you actionable steps to help train your brain to master your focus (even during the tough times), cultivate purpose, learn faster, achieve your goals, and become limitless. Sometimes agents are chasing their next listing and they’re not building long-term investments for themselves. Jim Manning from the Doors to Deals podcast is an investor agent here in St. Louis drops in to talk to me about how Realtors can become better investors. To get a glimpse of the scope and capacity of his business Three Doors, Jim and his partner did 565 deals in 2019. They walk the walk as Realtor investors, and they generously tell you how you can become one too. Before you start off as an investor agent, what skills do you need to develop? Jim is familiar with that little negative voice on your shoulder that tells you that you don’t know enough, don’t have the right connections, or aren’t ready for this new venture. It took him 18 months to buy his first deal, so he knows that that voice can drown out your dreams of financial freedom. That’s why he advises investor agents to create a community of like-minded individuals to propel their success forward.Jim’s not going to ignore current Realtor challenges. It’s a challenging market out there, and the #1 complaint from his Realtors is how difficult it is to find a deal. He starts them backward on a marketing plan that is so similar to the one my own coaching students use.—How many leads did you generate?—How many appointments did you get?—How many offers did you make?—How many deals did you get under contract?Don’t miss out on my newest class Partner with Joe! In this 30 day class, I’ll walk you through how to get your first deal and it’s done in the simplest, easiest, and fastest way possible. Plus, for only $7, you can partner with me on deals. Check out the super simple calculator that will help you analyze properties, and let’s connect. What's Inside:—The power of follow-up (and you didn’t just hear it from me!).—New Realtors have to be hungry for growth to find motivated sellers.—It’s a hot and very competitive market, so how can a new Realtor find opportunities?—Why Jim says his #1 mistake was believing that he had to know everything before he started investing, and how you can avoid that same mistake.

Digital Disruption. It's a phrase we hear a lot, and for good reason. And it's precisely the kind of disruption financial institutions can lead right now. This week on Banking On Experience, CRMNEXT's James Gilbert is joined by Jim Perry, Senior Strategist at Market Insights, Inc. to discuss this very topic. What's covered? · Why Jim believes this topic is so important right now. It's not a new topic, but- as he says, “COVID has already liberated a lot of consumers from that transactional dependency on the branch. So that means we have to be talking about this topic.” · What this buzz phrase, digital disruption really means. Hint: Look at Capital One (disrupted our concept of branch), Robinhood (disrupted investing), Prosper (disrupted lending), and Chime (currently out there disrupting mobile banking as we know it.) · What digital transformation- another popular buzz phrase- means. As he says, “It's not just about technology. It's about culture. It's about business model. It's about process…It's even about your mindset. It really requires dramatic change.” · What FIs should avoid in this endeavor. Jim's word of caution? Trying to integrate digital technologies just into the customer facing part of the bank- and not tending to the backend, the employees, and the processes- just slows everything down. · The How: a framework for where to start. For one thing, look at your branch network, your call center, your back office, your c-suite, your employees. Does everybody understands why you're trying to do these things? · What functions of a business- especially at an FI- need to be involved up front, in the strategy. Keep in mind: regardless of the title or function in the organization, you have to have people driving this initiative that are really going to champion the customer. It always comes back to people, people. · How brand and culture play a role in this digital transformation and disruption. Jim suggests some Qs to ask yourself, and you'll want to take notes. · For true digital transformation, the importance of having the right people in the right jobs. · Some of the biggest challenges financial institutions are facing right now. For one thing, the core system many have had for so long really doesn't play well with new technology. And, if you don't tie systems together and keep up as a FI, a FinTech company will swoop in and do it for you. · What Jim thinks relevant data is. Fundamentally- he says- it's data about the customer or member and their specific journey with your FI.

No brain left behind — that’s the mission of today’s guest, Jim Kwik, the author of Limitless - Upgrade Your Brain, Learn Anything Faster, Unlock Your Exceptional Life and the founder of Kwik Learning. After experiencing a brain injury when he was only five, Jim struggled through school, dubbed “the boy with the broken brain.” So, Jim is well aware of how much untapped cognitive potential we all have, even those of us who have been told that we’re cognitively deficient in some way or were abandoned by the traditional educational system. But there are very few of us living up to our brain’s full potential. The sad truth is that most of us were not taught the best ways to learn, were not taught habits that contribute to our cognitive development, and are constantly exposed to environmental factors that further erode our ability to learn, remember, and focus. However, there is a silver lining: it’s not too late!  An old dog can, in fact, learn new tricks. And, in this episode, Jim is going to share the fantastic framework for learning and improving brain function that he’s developed over years of research and experimentation. 08:45 — Jim’s new book, Limitless - Upgrade Your Brain, Learn Anything Faster, Unlock Your Exceptional Life Limitless is not about being perfect — it’s about progressing beyond what you currently believe is possible The three-part limitless model, a framework for unlocking human potential Ending the trance that we’ve been put in Information without application is useless   22:00 — How to stop self-limiting language and negative self-talk from interfering with your life and goals How we end up using limiting language and creating limiting beliefs The three invisible forces that keep you in your self-limiting box Jim walks Luke through some of his own limiting beliefs Mindfulness is a muscle that you can train Getting comfortable being uncomfortable Misconceptions about motivation The motivation formula The lies we were told about reading How we can break negative patterns and create positive ones   01:08:10 — How devices ruin our ability to focus (and how you can fix it) We’re never taught how to study How phones are ruining the youngest generations’ focus and memory We’re taught how to learn and what to learn, but now how to think   01:18:55 — How Limitless will give you your power back Why Jim felt the need to release his book during the pandemic, while everyone is being disrupted and finding it harder to focus How Jim practiced what he preached when writing his book After you order Limitless, make sure you get your free 10-day Kwik Start Course Limitless for kids and teens How did Jim learn how to write a book?   01:29:20 — Cocooning in self-isolation, lockdown, and/or quarantine How you can grow during this time How Jim remains positive in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic Upleveling your skills The struggle the caterpillar goes through to break out of its cocoon is what gives it the strength to fly More about this episode. When’s the last time you remembered a new phone number? This used to be the norm, but now most of us rely on our digital devices for everything from phone numbers to directions and even basic math. This might feel harmless but it’s actually doing our brains a disservice. We’re living in an age of digital dementia, because we don’t have to rely on our brains for the memorization and navigation we used to. But it doesn’t have to be that way—we can retrain ourselves to learn faster, retain information better, and really maximize our time spent learning. The secret is meta-learning, or the science of learning how to learn. There’s no better person to dive into this topic than Jim Kiwk, my guest today on The Doctor’s Farmacy. Jim is the founder of Kwik Learning and a widely recognized world expert in speed-reading, memory improvement, brain performance, and accelerated learning. For over two decades he has served as the brain coach to many of the world’s leading C-suite executives and celebrities. After a childhood brain injury left him learning-challenged, Jim created strategies to dramatically enhance his mental performance. There's a revolution happening for physicians. Have you ever felt like you've been lied to? Like a supposed financial professional has taken advantage of you? Maybe they've sold you some crazy expensive life insurance policy. Or instead, maybe you know that your spending has been a bit out of control. You don't have a budget and instead you have a mountain of credit card debt. Or maybe instead... you have a mountain range of student debt. It's 100k, 200k, 300k, or more... Or, let's say your debts are paid off and you are sick and tired of the taxes that you are paying. Yet, you don't know who to turn to for advice. There's a financial education revolution happening. It's led by a man who has empowered dozens of physicians. It's the revolution of the White Coat Investor. My name is Dave Denniston, your host and welcome back to the latest episode of The Freedom Formula for Physicians Podcast. Welcome back to our monthly fireside chat with a physician to get to know their journey, their joys, and their struggles with finances and outside of finances. This show is not always about actionable content. It is however a chance for you to see behind the curtains, to walk in another person's shoes and experience their lives. Our next guest has not only been a physician, but is also a financial blogger and thought leader. As a matter of fact, he has inspired over a dozen physicians to start their own blogs so that they could model his success. A little bio on him… he is practicing, full-time, board-certified emergency physician just a few years out of residency.  Although he's always been interested in personal finance and investing, he really started diving into the field as a resident when he finally got sick of financial professionals ripping him off.  In fact, most of his first few encounters with financial professionals ended badly for him. So, that really sucks and I know many of us can relate to that. Unfortunately, doctors are a target. We'll dive into that later. I know he has a ton of wisdom to share with us and with no further adieu… Please help me welcome Dr. Jim Dahle (pronunciation- DOLL-EE), THE White Coat Investor…. In this podcast, you will discover... Why Jim had virtually no exposure to financial education growing up The moment when he was growing up that provided motivation to be financially successful The financial lessons he is teaching his kids Why debt hasn't played a role in his financial journey and the sacrifice of time he made instead How he built his empire and inspired dozens of physicians to be like him The 3 actions he is taking to drastically lower his income taxes His future plans for more books For the whole podcast, the show notes, resources, and tons of free stuff, make sure to visit the podcast website at www.DoctorFreedomPodcast.com

[50:09] Don’t completely get out of the market [52:35] What’s happening with the oil industry [55:07] Do we need this wake-up call? Is the Coronavirus the next Spanish Flu? The media has started comparing the coronavirus pandemic to the 1918 Spanish flu. Jim points out that we can’t compare events that are 102 years apart, but that they have a similarity: they both are a ‘super-spreading event’. As soldiers started returning home at the end of World War I, they brought the flu with them and spread it worldwide. With the modern convenience of air travel, we are engaging in the modern-day equivalent of a super-spreading event. We could see wide-ranging effects similar to that of the Spanish Flu, but only time will tell. Precautions you should consider Jim and I discussed some common questions being asked by everyone concerned. Should you wear a mask? Globally, everyone appears to be donning masks. However, Jim points out that there’s no point in wearing them unless you’re sick. They help prevent droplets from your mouth reaching other people. It can help aid you to remember to stop touching your face and spreading the virus that way. Don’t hoard masks. You should leave them available for those who are sick and medical professionals on the front-lines. Is Purell effective? Purell is not as effective as washing your hands. Another downside is that it appears to be sold out everywhere. While hand-sanitizer IS better than nothing, it won’t kill a strain of bacteria called ‘Clostridium Difficile’. The bottom line? Surgeons don’t purell their hands before surgery, they scrub them with soap and water. Do the same. What do you do if you think you’ve contracted the Coronavirus? Firstly, do not go to the emergency room. If you don’t have the virus, the likelihood of it increases by stepping foot in an ER. Call your doctor or take advantage of any virtual care afforded you. Some retail giants are now setting up drive-in testing sites at their stores. What are the symptoms of the virus? The two prevailing symptoms are a fever and a cough (which can be difficult to differentiate from the flu, bronchitis, the common cold, etc.) How do I avoid catching the virus? The easiest way is to limit unnecessary travel and attendance at large events (most sporting or music events have already been canceled). What do you do if you HAVE been diagnosed with COVID-19? It’s best practice to quarantine yourself and wear a mask to prevent spreading it to others. A technical discussion on the spread and mortality rate of the virus ‘R0’ (pronounced ‘R-nought’) is an equation that indicates how quickly an infectious disease could spread. Another way to phrase it is the average number of people who will catch a disease from a single infected person. The best-case scenario is the R0 stays below 1—signifying that the spread will likely die-out. If it rises anywhere above 1 it is likely to continue spreading. We must preface this by pointing out that this is a variable and multiple factors impact this number daily. If people practice social distancing and isolate themselves if infectious, it can lower the R0 range. At the time of recording, COVID-19 is at an R0 range of 1.4-3.9 with a variable fatality rate anywhere from 0.7% (in South Korea) to 5% (in Italy). Taking an optimistic viewpoint of the R0 and fatality rate calculation—based on today’s numbers—we could be looking at the possibility of 285,000 people dying from the virus. If you calculate it with a 3.9 R0 and a 1% fatality rate—we could be looking at 2.4 million people (in the United States) dying. It is concerning, which is why the government is taking action to slow the spread of the virus. The more precautions we take to slow the spread, the lower the R0 will fall—lowering the number of people potentially impacted. How the coronavirus could impact your portfolio Everyone is wondering—is the market going to crash? Are we about to see a recession? I believe the probability is high. The window of opportunity is open and the Coronavirus is an outside catalyst that could push our market over the edge. A few months ago, this virus didn’t exist. Suddenly, it plunged the entire world into chaos. So how should you move forward with your investment strategy if there is an impending recession? Firstly, you must always have a well-defined investment strategy. Humans are emotional about money. We work hard for it and feel the need to protect it—which can lead to poor financial decisions. So please find someone who knows what they’re doing to guide you. Gain a basic understanding of how the economy works. Whatever you do, it is probably not wise to go completely out of the market. If you know what you’re doing and have a good investment strategy you’re looking at probabilities. The average portfolio is a 60/40 split between stocks and bonds. If you are 100% sure that a recession is coming, a defensive strategy would be to shift your portfolio to a 50/50 split. It can protect you in a downturn and psychologically helps alleviate your worry. The bottom line is we don’t know what’s going to happen. The R0 could drop significantly, slowing the spread of the virus. We could see a vaccine come to market quickly. Warmer weather could slow the spread of the virus (similar to how the flu slows). The Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson stated “We’re in the middle of a very important experiment worldwide. The question is—will people listen to scientists?”. So stay educated, prepared, and vigilant. Don’t let the mass media misinform you or incite fear. Above all, listen to the people who actually know what they’re talking about—scientists. Jim Haven’s career is rooted in advertising and design but at his core he is a storyteller and problem solver. His corporate clients, including Starbucks, Seattle’s Best, Amazon, Nike and Bill Gates, come to him for help with branding and advertising, but end up on a journey to discover who they are as a company and ultimately as a brand. The results are ads so grounded in story and emotion that they are more cinema than a commercial. Jim started his career at the legendary firm Goodby, Silverstein in San Francisco and now lives in London and Seattle where he runs a creative consultancy, Applied Daydreams.   What you will learn: How Jim got his start in the ad industry. How Jim’s talent for storytelling helped him become a branding expert. Why Jim’s ads and branding videos feel more like cinema than a commercial. Why working with constraints like a limited budget can actually foster creativity, and large budgets can likewise hamper creativity. How Jim finds his clients’ story by immersing himself in their corporate culture while searching for "beautiful problems.” Why he left the preeminent San Francisco firm of Goodby Silverstein for a boutique firm in Amsterdam. How he turned his ad agency “Creature” from a boutique firm with 5 employees into an 85 employee international firm with offices in London and Seattle. What steps he took at Creature to cultivate and nurture creativity in his employees and why he thinks he took it too far. How he helped Bill Gates create a blog called “Gates Notes.” What approach Jim took when Bill Gates asked him to create a one-of-a-kind 50th birthday present for Bono. How Jim’s talent for finding universal human truths made him a natural fit to assist the opposition party in the 2012 Venezuelan election, attempting to overcome a voter suppression campaign by dictator Hugo Chavez. Content marketing provides an opportunity to expand your business and to offer something of value to the manufacturing community around the world. Chris Fox, the creative director at MakingChips, shares why every manufacturing leader should be investing in the development of a strong and value-driven content marketing strategy. It’s all about building your online presence as a company and growing your audience.  Connect with us:www.MakingChips.com/contact Provide content marketing with value to those that need your expertise Content marketing has grown from only a couple of usable platforms to several powerful mediums for sharing what your business offers - from products to educational knowledge. Blogging, social media, and YouTube are all avenues for content marketing. The goal is to establish the presence of your business and brand, while also meeting the needs of the Metal Working Nation. Chris explains that learning and teaching are things that every machinist and manufacturing leader can benefit from. Every manufacturing business has expertise and wisdom to share with the manufacturing community. Don’t be afraid to begin documenting the story of your company as you create, make mistakes, and overcome obstacles. Your knowledge can easily become rich building material for content marketing!  Create authentic content that offers a valuable return on investment Your audience craves and needs original, authentic content to help them accomplish their work at their very best. Being natural in your content marketing is vital. People easily see through facades and glossy content. Be honest and provide real solutions to real problems through your content marketing. If you want your audience to invest their time in watching your videos, reading your blog, or re-tweeting your twitter post, then you need to provide a valuable ROI.  Chris encourages listeners to put aside the notion of proprietary secrets. The goal is to grow as a manufacturing community - while also building your reputation as a brand. Value-driven content marketing can help establish your reputation as a trustworthy source for knowledge and product.  Vlogging helps establish credibility with your audience  Vlogging is blogging in a video format - most often through YouTube. The true value in a blog comes from the individuals in your business. Content marketing doesn’t have to be formal or impressively polished. Being real is vital, and showcasing the talent and knowledge of individual team members can help establish credibility with your audience.  Chris explains how to navigate the nuances of vlogging as a manufacturing company. Being honest with the titles of your videos is key. If your title claims to answer a question, make sure that the video actually answers it. Google is now smart enough to read the transcript of your video and match it with the title. If those two factors don’t match up, Google is less likely to promote your video.  The length of your videos should be tailored to the needs of your audience. If it takes an hour to demonstrate the solution to a real problem, then your video should be an hour long. If it only takes three minutes, then only create three minutes. Lots of ads and fluff in your videos will turn your audience away and detract from your credibility. Above all, be honest and be concise.  Equip and inspire your audience - and your team The value in content marketing is derived from the desire to give without thought of receiving anything in return. Take the time to understand what your customers, partners, and team members need. Know what platforms they use and what types of mediums they are most likely to engage with. While you may not be able to kick off a content marketing strategy that utilizes YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Facebook all at once, you can certainly start with one. Don’t have expensive camera equipment to film? Use your phone! Bring in the team and refer to their feedback when developing material. Companies aren’t people, but they are made up of people. Make sure that you are providing excellent content by ensuring that you are not only promoting your brand but also equipping and inspiring.  Here’s The Good Stuff! Why Jim and Jason see MakingChips as a way to pour back into the Metal Working Nation.  Introducing Chris Fox: Creative Director at MakingChips Is all marketing content marketing? The valuable knowledge that manufacturers have to share.  Tracking your marketing performance through content marketing platforms.  People want value - not excess material.  Knowing what platform is best for your company’s needs. Building credibility through vlogging.  How important is the title of your vlog video? Showcasing the people in your business - not just your products.  Gaging the appropriate length for your video.  Learning how to tag your videos.  Tools & Takeaways What Is Content Marketing? Part of becoming a Renaissance Man requires having a healthy dose of skepticism.   Financial Survival Network’s Kerry Lutz visits with Jim during Freedomfest as they discuss a myriad of topics including the value of skepticism on today's episode.   Welcome to the Way the Renaissance Man podcast. This is a show about ideas, personal empowerment, and celebrating the rational life. Our goal is to help each other discover the tools needed to better focus our minds, integrate our thoughts with actions, and live the lives we really want with your host Jim Woods.   Who's On:  Today's Guest is Kerry Lutz, author of “Viral Podcasting: How To Earn A 6 Figure Income From Your Podcast,” and founder and host of the Financial Survival Network. Kerry Lutz has been a student of Austrian Economics since 1977. After graduating from The New York Law School, he became an attorney and lifelong serial entrepreneur. His diverse career has included running a legal printing company, practicing commercial law and litigation and founding a successful distressed asset investment company. After the 2008 financial collapse and the continued global economic deterioration, Kerry realized people needed a reliable source for accurate information. The ability to perceive economic reality, as well as to separate truth from governmental inspired economic fantasy will be essential for economic survival and prosperity in the years ahead. In 2010, Kerry gave up most of his other interests to pursue his long held desire of becoming a radio show host. Thus the Financial Survival Network was born. Its mission is helping you to prosper and thrive in the New Economy. He has done hundreds of interviews with such financial luminaries as Peter Schiff, Harry S. Dent, Martin Armstrong, Jim Rogers, Marc Faber and Peter Grandich. He continually releases new segments and interviews on iTunes and YouTube. His new Triple Lutz Report was an instant hit and continues to increase audience share. As he says, “The Financial Survival Network, It’s All About What’s Next!“  What's Discussed:  The differences of opinion Jim and Kerry have about Facebook, what they agree on and why that’s a good thing. Why Kerry believes stupidity has become an exalted state of being.  What Yossarian, the character from the book “Catch-22” by Joseph Heller has to do with shaping Kerry’s political views? Why Jim feels that book was influential in American history. What does Kerry mean when he says, “it’s important to not let the father of the wish be the father of the thought” and the lesson he learned. What Jim identifies as one of the biggest challenges in today’s fake news era and what we must do specifically to overcome that challenge.   And much more...    Learn More with Links:   Kerry Lutz's Website: http://financialsurvivalnetwork.com/   Jim's Websites: WayOfTheRenaissanceMan.com Jim Woods Investing   Now, we want to hear from you! Episode 216: Jim Collins – How To Go From Good To Great Show Notes: Sustained Excellence: Never go to a meeting without writing down 5 questions prior to the meeting Always follow up the meeting with at least a page of notes -- Share those with your mentor What made you say yes to The Learning Leader Show after 2 1/2 years? It requires intense focus to prepare This is a teaching moment Only say yes if it's going to be impactful. The team determined this show was the right place to do that Always ask yourself -- "How can I make myself useful to the world?" This was advice originally given to him by Peter Drucker A great teacher can change your life in 30 seconds -- Peter Drucker did that for Jim "I am constitutionally unemployable" -- Why Jim feels this about himself His curiosity has led to the success and most importantly... Great questions like: How to turn something into an enduring great company? How someone or a company can go from Good To Great? Jim most admired Peter Drucker when he was 35 years old... The story of their first meeting and how Peter was the curious one... Kept peppering Jim with questions to start the conversation (much like Jim did to me to start this conversation) "The ultimate zen master with bamboo stick" Drucker - "It seems to me that you spend a lot of time worrying if you will survive. You probably will survive. You seem to focus a lot on the question, "how to be successful?" That is the wrong question. The right question is "How to be useful?" What would it have cost Jim to not publish Good To Great after he finished the manuscript? -- More than $100m.  He had to get it out in the world.  He felt it was his responsibility to do so... Another great mentor said to Jim... "When seeking an entrepreneurial path... Cut off all other options and GO." "Everything is driven by by questions" Can a good company become a great company? How? Level 5 Leader Starts with confronting the brutal facts Personal humility and professional will Not what, but who -- Get the right people on the bus Does not happen in one fell swoop or a leap. It happens over time. Flywheel -- Create momentum Understand the hedgehog concept -- An expert in one thing... Knows it very well 3 Parts of the Hedgehog concept Deeply passionate about it Encoded for it... You're really good at it. An expert Economically, you can make money from it Level 5 Leaders: What cause do I serve? Humility to serve... It's not about them Willful -- Able to make difficult decisions For the best Level 5 Leaders... How do they sustain it? It's easier for them because they understand their personal hedgehog -- It helps them remain renewed after many years "Measured Risk" vs. "Burn The Boats" Fire Bullets... Then Cannon Balls For Jim, this was his first two books + his time as a professor at Stanford before he decided to leave to start his own company You must navigate your path.  It doesn't mean you take unfounded risk... Fire bullets first, then cannonballs "If you never fire a cannonball, you'll never make it. "BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) How to write a good one? Take calibrated, calculated risk -- Have things to keep you alive even if everything goes wrong Productive Paranoia Validation - What are points of success you can look to? Jim's wife Joann committing to winning an Ironman race... She was a consultant at the time.  She was also a runner. She tried biking and was very good at it.  Eventually she practiced, took measured risks, and won the Ironman race "If you were a trial attorney and had to win the case, what evidence would you use?" The Flywheel principle and putting it to use for Jeff Bezos and the Amazon team -- How could they build momentum? After Jim met with Jeff Bezos and his leadership team in 2001, Amazon executives were elated; according to several members of the team at the time, they felt that, after five years, they finally understood their own business. Most important for young leaders -- Jim's advice "FIRST WHO, THEN WHAT?" Who do you want to mentor you? Who do you want to mentor? Who do you want to be your friends? Who do you want to work with? Who do you want to spend time with? The most important question is WHO You don't need to answer WHAT until you answer WHO "The most important question is WHO. First WHO, then WHAT. Who will be your mentor? Who will be your friends? Who will you help? Who will you spend time with? You don't need to answer what until well after you've answered WHO." Fail To Learn: Teaching stories from business, sales, marketing, coaching, blogging, freelance, & entrepreneurs.

Jim Palmer, author of Decide, had a couple of successful businesses already running when he decided to partner with a friend for another. This idea, while great at the time, turned out to be an expensive learning experience for them. Fortunately, the partners had worked out the details beforehand. They planned for what would happen if everything worked well, or if it failed. And it failed. Are they still friends today? You’ll have to listen to find out. Here’s what Jim and I discuss: How Jim and his friend came up with the idea for their business. The smart things they did before taking the first step. How they spent a year building the necessary systems to give their distribution partners a turnkey system. How these turnkey systems can fail, when not implemented properly. What happens when two friends, with a lot of business experience, realize they’ve lost over $30,000 and months of their time on a losing business idea. The one defining key that makes every business work. Why Jim doesn’t regret the loss. How they choose their distribution partners, and how those partners still failed. How people in business assume that the business will take care of itself, and what really needs to be done. The most important piece to any partnership. What caused Jim and his partner to ‘mentally check out’ long before they closed the business’ doors. Why you need to ‘cut the rope,’ and what it means to your success. The key to failing fast. How you can use a newsletter as a ‘silent salesman’ to deliver consistent and reliable sales. What Jim has found to be a critical factor among those who are the most successful in any field. How you can improve your ability to make decisions. Why wrong decisions aren’t bad, or detrimental to your success. How he structures his week, so he can work from anywhere in the world. What IS an Angel Investor? - Jim Sullivan

If you’ve heard the term “angel investor” but haven’t been sure exactly what it’s about, this is the conversation for you. On this episode, I chat with Jim Sullivan, an experienced businessman who has only been working as part of an angel investing group for just over two years at the time of our conversation. He’s the perfect guy to explain what angel investing is, how investing groups come together, how they assess potential investment partners, and what they are aiming to achieve in the end. I think you’ll really enjoy hearing Jim’s perspective on what it means to be an angel investor. He’s even got some advice on how to get started in angel investing, so be sure you make the time to listen.  Why would an individual investor join an angel investing group? Of course, anyone who has the money to invest in startup or first stage companies is able to do so. But doing so on your own can be very risky. An angel investing group is a partnership of individual angel investors who agree to work together to consider, assess, and advise early-stage startup companies in search of funding. The members of the group share the load of examining the risk VS reward of investing in the various companies and together make the decision to invest or not. It’s a great way to share the burden needed to make truly smart investing decisions. Jim Sullivan of The EF Angels investing group helps us understand how it works and is my guest today, on this episode of Capital Gains. How does an angel investing group find its investment partners? When you consider that there are always new companies looking for investment capital and that there are always investors who are looking to invest in promising new ideas and technologies, it may seem that getting those two parties together is a simple thing. But it’s really not. On this episode of the Capital Gains podcast, Jim Sullivan shares how he and his angel investment group make the first contact with potential startups through personal connections, introductions, and more. It’s proof that relationships and connections matter in business and you can hear how Jim and his group follow up with those first-time introductions to establish investment partnerships, so be sure you listen. Why does an angel investing group perform “due diligence?” Imagine someone you don’t know approaching you at the local coffee shop. The person tells you about his brand new company, the incredible ways he believes it will change a specific high-tech field, and asks if you have the funds to become an investor in what he’s doing. Would you be interested? Most investors wouldn’t simply because they don’t know enough about the person, his company and product, what stage of development and marketing he’s at, and is likely at least a bit ignorant about the market the product or service is targeting. In short, there’s been no  “due diligence” performed to ensure that the risk is one that is acceptable. Jim Sullivan is my guest on this episode and he explains what his angel investing group does in terms of due diligence so you can better understand how an angel investor makes decisions to invest or not invest. The first things to consider if you want to be an angel investor. When I asked my guest, Jim Sullivan what he recommends for the person who is intrigued by the idea of becoming an angel investor, he responded by saying that the first thing a person needs to consider is that they have a certain “risk threshold” - a level of risk beyond which they are unwilling to go. He recommends you know what your personal risk tolerance is and that you get your head around the idea that angel investing has no guarantees. You have to be prepared for the possibility that in every deal you may walk away with none of the money you’ve invested. It’s for this reason that Jim believes that angel investing is not for everyone and why he shares the kind of temperament that he believes is most suited to being an angel investor, on this episode. It’s a manufacturing renaissance   Where do you typically find the best employees for your manufacturing company? How do you go about finding them? As you’ll hear from Jim and Jason’s stories in this podcast episode, everyone gets into the business through a different path. But the guys believe there’s a huge reservoir of future manufacturing leaders in High School students.   Why High School students? Because they represent an untapped, teachable, ready-to-train class of workers who are in need of what the manufacturing industry has to offer. The shortage of qualified, motivated manufacturing workers illustrates how shop owners have to look outside the normal places to find workers who can not only get busy making chips, but can also become the manufacturing leaders of tomorrow. High School students might just fit that bill for you.   A manufacturing renaissance is happening here and now. It’s once again possible for a person working in the manufacturing industry to earn an income that can comfortably support an entire family and establish that family in society for years to come. It’s not about the dusty, dirty shop floor of your grandfather’s day. It’s a new day, a new, technically challenging opportunity for those who are willing to seize it.   Another reason you should look to High Schools for your next manufacturing leader is because of how the manufacturing career path stacks up against college. The average college student will leave school without a specific skill set, will enter their chosen career field at the very bottom rung, and will do so with a load of financial debt that will take years to repay. By contrast, the manufacturing industry has high paying jobs available now that the average High School graduate can take advantage of. They’ll move up faster and avoid accumulating the debt often associated with higher education or specialized training (the training is paid for by their employer in many cases).   Rethink your hiring process. Reconsider the places to get your employees and the future leaders in your company. Your business needs quality employees who are motivated to move up the ladder of success and your local High School may be the very best place to find exactly that. The manufacturing renaissance is here. Will you be a part of it? Here’s a teaser: the 6 qualities every future manufacturing leader must have   The ability to pass a drug test. Dependability. A basic understanding of High School math. Communication skills - this one is HUGE! Familiarity with manufacturing (Mechanical aptitude). The desire to receive further training and certification. .
