We hear all the time that marketers at their core are storytellers. And there’s no better way to sell your product than to put a story behind it. But what if your product is not really a product? What if the product is simply just analytics? How do you brand that experience? Jim Sinai was presented with that very challenge when he helped launch Einstein, Salesforce’s A.I. for CRM, and he said there were two key things that stuck out about that experience.“There's two actually really important lessons for all the marketers out there. One, research is important, but having a gut and a conviction is also important. Marc had this instinct that it needed to have a persona and it needed to be identifiable and it needed to be something that people could look at and grab onto. The other was that you've got to pitch the story. You can't tell the story when you're trying to sell someone on something that it's right or wrong, you can't just tell them why, you’ve got to go into pitch mode as though you're talking as you're selling the story to the press.”While Jim is fond of his days at Salesforce, he’s now the SVP of Marketing at Procore, a company that is making waves in the construction industry by helping companies get things done quicker, but most importantly on time. On this episode of Marketing Trends, Jim dives into what is making Procore stand above its competitors: including how to best understand and relate to your customers, and why every marketing strategy needs to start by identifying your unfair advantage.Main TakeawaysKnow the Language: When you’re doing vertical SaaS, especially in an industry such as construction, it’s important to speak the language that your customers can understand. Instead of simply telling your consumer you have A.I., tell them how the A.I. benefits them. Customers > Logos: Successful businesses are built on existing and returning customers. This is why it’s incredibly important to continuously maintain a high level of customer service. By creating brand loyalty, and really working to gain a complete understanding of who your customers are, you can then use that knowledge in messaging and marketing tactics rather than relying on flashy logos or branding. What’s Your Unfair Advantage: It may sound like Marketing 101, but one of the most important things a marketer can do is gain an understanding of what their unfair advantage is in the marketplace is, and then exploit that unfair advantage to win the trust and loyalty of customers.---Marketing Trends podcast is brought to you by Salesforce. Episode 269: Acquiring An Entrepreneurial Business Acumen, Part 3 of 4 How would you rate yourself in these four emotional intelligence areas: social awareness, social skills, self-awareness, and self-management? Jim Conn said he lacked two of the four skills. The consequences have been significant for him, as you will hear. An honest assessment provides an opening for Jim to have some new insights into himself during our conversation about business acumen and situations that test his emotional intelligence. “Self-inquiry helps us recover from habits while reflection helps us recover from thoughtlessness,” writes Deepak Chopra, M.D. (Total Meditation, 2020). Jim reflects on what was underneath his self-proclaimed cockiness and identified what caused him to mess up and burn a bridge in a significant relationship. I felt it was one of those tender moments in the conversation when I would have given Jim a hug. You will learn the meaning of a helpful acronym to investigating your feelings, R.U.L.E.R. We start this conversation where we left off; Jim Conn was forging a comeback over ten years joining Mark Johnson at Rice Lake Weighing Systems, Inc. in Rice Lake, WI. As Vice President of Sales and Distribution, Jim helped build the business from an $8M business to $40M in annual sales with 300 employees and eight salespeople. Jim was the company pilot. In 1985, Jim raised over $500,000 to fly both polls in 11 days with a fellow pilot out of Nigeria. The PolarFlite from the North Pole to the South Pole earned them 16-certified world records. While Jim generated the money, Anita raised their three children: Laurie, Brian, and Jackie. The strain of imbalance takes its toll on the family. Tension grew after the PolarFlite trip with Mark to the breaking point. What broke Jim’s spirit? After Jim resigns, he works with a Venture Capital firm and with partners buys into BW Integrated Systems, an industry leader in the design and manufacture of end-of-line packaging equipment and robotic automation solutions and the execution of integrated packaging systems. The attributes Jim says for its success boiled down to people, products, and performance. Jim’s longtime friend and mentor, Dick Harper, a clinical psychologist, comes into his life again. They work together to implement an open-book management system that attributed to a more empowered workforce. Jim explains how they educated employees on how money was generated in the company and how they used a rating system to reinforce their cultural values. While Jim was there, the revenues went from $7M to $13M with 60 employees. Things did not end well at the end of those five years. Jim forges ahead with his optimism and resiliency. Episode 268: Acquiring An Entrepreneurial Business Acumen, Part 2 of 4 This series underscores the unpredictable nature of an entrepreneurial lifestyle. Entrepreneurship for Jim Conn started at age 8, selling frogs and angleworms to Lunds Bait Shop in Alexandria. A cherished resort area in Minnesota. While Jim discovered how to catch bait for local fishermen and help resort owners tackle mosquitoes, his dad, Clair Conn, decided to form a business with his friend, Walter Wood, after WW II (1947). They built out two territories selling grain handling machinery and grain storage products in MN and North Dakota. Walter fostered a territory in Redwood Falls, and Clair forged a northern territory in the Fargo/Moorhead area. In the photo, Jim and his 1st plane for Wood & Conn Co. accompanied by his three children: Laurie, Brian, and Jackie. Walt died suddenly of a heart attack three years into building Wood & Conn Corporation. Clair asked Walt’s son, Dave Wood, to come back from the Navy to run its Redwood Falls side. Clair Conn and Dave Wood ran the business until Clair retired in 1973. Entering the family business, another impressive and self-described cocky sales guy was Jim Conn. The two sons, Dave and Jim, capitalized on having supplies and grain handling equipment farmers needed especially sugar beet equipment. BER-VAC Cultivators were popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s, so Dave and Jim leveraged the business to get as many BER-VAC Cultivators in stock as possible. That machine prepares seedbed for sugar beets. Annual sales went from $300,000 to $4M over ten years in each branch or $8M combined with 40 employees. 1980s BER-VAC Cultivator Today's Beet Cultivation Set-up. Then, beet farmer crops froze, gas prices surged, and the farm crisis hit in the mid-1980s, “completely altering the fabric of rural America,” as reported on Iowa PBS. “American farmers confronted an economic crisis more severe than any since the Great Depression. Agricultural communities throughout the Midwest and across the nation were devastated. Families were forced from the land, lenders collapsed, and businesses on rural main streets closed—many to never reopen. It was a decade of turmoil and activism.” I remember this rough time as a high schooler on our dairy farm in Parkers Prairie, MN. We were fortunate; our family managed to survive. Farmers and anyone doing business with farmers was affected, including Wood & Conn Corporation. In stark terms of the devastation, Jim talks and ascribes his subsequent boost in business acumen and leadership development to these two years. Dave Wood was utterly devastated, needing time to address his mental health. Jim stepped up and quickly learned how to take the business through Chapter 11-reorganization, stabilize the business, and set-up a 10-year plan. Solid business relationships were a big part of their comeback. You will find out how Dave returns and how Jim deals with the shame and emotional exhaustion at the end of the turbulent two-year period. Dave would run the Redwood Falls branch and mentor Tim Gilk until he became the third-generation Wood & Conn Corporation owner in 2006. Tim is the first non-family business owner. Dave Wood passed away on April 17, 2020. Life after Bankruptcy. Shame. Self-blame. Falling behind on his home mortgage. The pressure to provide. An opportunity to begin anew breathes life into the desperation. A 10-year delay in being able to look back and process what happened. He may be down, but he was far from being out. Listen in as Jim stages a remarkable comeback applying new marketplace insight into a technical business where he hits a home run with Anita by his side. Small Town Opportunities and an Amazing Comeback. This time to Mark Johnson, another well-written letter gets Jim a job with Rice Lake Weighing Systems, Inc. in Rice Lake, WI. This first episode of 2021 starts off with a couple of streaming stinkers, WW84, and Midnight Sky. WW84 is HBOMax's much anticipated sequel to Wonder Woman, and it hits so far off the mark the movie left Jim wondering who green lit this thing? While Jim hated the Wonder Woman sequel, Teal found plenty to gripe about with George Clooney's Midnight Sky. All is not lost, dear listener. Bill from Queens stopped by the show to help Jim and Teal out with a discussion on film director, Joseph Losey. Flying way under the appreciated film director radar, Losey directed some classic films, and for the first time Jim and Teal caught up with them. A special shout out to listener, Andrew Parry, who wrote Jim and Teal and asked if they would discuss Losey's The Servant (1963) and Mr. Klein (1976.) And boy, oh boy, were they glad for the suggestion. While the new offerings from hollywood might let them down, discovering Losey is a film-lover's dream. It's a jam-packed episode with lots of movies. Several of Joseph Losey's offerings can be found currently on the Criterion Channel, and some on Amazon Prime as well.

White Collar Week with Jeff Grant, A Podcast Serving the White Collar Justice Community. Limited 10 Show Run: Summer 2020It's the Isolation that Destroys Us. The Solution is in Community.____________Podcast Ep. 06: Madoff Talks, with Guest: Jim Campbell Today on the podcast we have Jim Campbell, a radio host and journalist based in Greenwich, Connecticut, who hosts a nationally syndicated business affairs show, Business Talk with Jim Campbell. He also hosts another show, Forensic Talk, that dives into the world of financial crimes. It's probably not surprising that Jim and I are friends, and that he has interviewed me on both of his shows. Today we turn the tables and Jim the interviewer becomes Jim the guest, as we talk about his upcoming book, Madoff Talks: Uncovering the Untold Story Behind the Most Notorious Ponzi Scheme in History. Jim's book will be published next year (McGraw Hill). He is now putting the finishing touches on his multi-year dialogue with Bernie Madoff in prison, Bernie's wife Ruth Madoff, and Bernie's late son Andrew Madoff, as well as government investigators, lawyers, witnesses, and most importantly, the victims. While Jim has culled over 400 pages of actual emails with Bernie Madoff - and presents Madoff's words verbatim - he never accepts any of it at face value. Jim investigates the truth behind the man, the family, the fraud, and the systemic breakdown of the SEC, big banks, and every watchdog that had the obligation and opportunity to stop the fraud before more people got hurt. And failed. The Bernie Madoff story was, and remains, one of the biggest tales of grandiosity and greed that Wall Street has ever known, and certainly the largest Ponzi scheme in history. And we have an inside, up-close look on today's podcast. So, coming up, Madoff Talks, with our guest Jim Campbell. On White Collar Week. I hope you will join us. - Jeff______________________Welcome to White Collar Week with Jeff Grant, a podcast serving the white collar justice community. It’s the isolation that destroys us. The solution is in community. If you are interested in this podcast, then you are probably already a member of the white collar justice community – even if you don’t quite know it yet. Our community is certainly made up of people being prosecuted, or who have already been prosecuted, for white collar crimes. But it is also made up of the spouses, children and families of those prosecuted for white collar crimes – these are the first victims of white collar crime. And the community also consists of the other victims, both direct and indirect, and those in the wider white collar ecosystem like friends, colleagues, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, law enforcement, academics, researchers. Investigators, mitigation experts, corrections officers, reentry professionals, mental health care professionals, drug and alcohol counselors, – and ministers, chaplains and advocates for criminal and social justice reform. The list goes on and on… In this very eventful summer 2020, our mission is to introduce you to other members of the white collar justice community, to hear their very personal stories, and hopefully gain a broader perspective of what this is really all about. Maybe this will inspire some deeper thoughts and introspection? Maybe it will inspire some empathy and compassion for people you might otherwise resent or dismiss? And maybe it will help lift us all out of our own isolation and into community, so we can learn to live again in the sunshine of the spirit. Blessings, לשלום Jeff Rev. Jeff Grant, J.D., M.Div. Cornell Communications' Specialist, Carrie Chalmers returns to the show for a discussion focused on several women film directors. First up is Rungano Nyoni's spellbinding 2017 film, I Am Not A Witch. A semi-satyrical look at women in bondage with a spellbinding lead performance by Maggie Mutubwa. A film with so many twists and turns Jim decided to cut out some of the reveals mentioned during the program to avoid spoiling it for those who may watch this film later. It is currently playing on The Criterion Channel. The next film discussed is available to rent, and it is The Assistant, directed by Kitty Green. Julia Garner is a recent college graduate who lands her dream job in a New York City film production office working for a powerful film mogul (sound familiar?) The action takes place during one day at the office where the assistant will have to make a choice about her future--stay quiet about the abuse surrounding her, or be part of the problem. While Jim, Teal and Carrie each had their issues with the movie, they definitely feel there was a lot to talk about. This month The Criterion Channel features three films by French Film director, Diane Kurys. Jim, Carrie, and Teal all sampled her first feature, the 1978 coming-of-age film, Peppermint Soda. Jim enjoyed it the most, but all three found it to be an enjoyable film. Then Jim and Carrie saw Kurys' 1983 film, and possibly the movie she's most known for, Entre Nous. This feature has a lot of elements to discuss. For the final leg of the show, Teal shows his appreciation for the only woman in Oscar history to win Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow. Carrie found herself re-watching The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty with a new appreciation of what traditionally masculine material looks like in the hands of a woman filmmaker. Lots of laughs and insight packed into this 76 min episode.

Jim Martyn, VP for The Canadian Brewhouse joins Lisa to discuss how to hire right. The Canadian Brewhouse of companies is rapidly expanding with 1000’s of employees and looking to grow internationally in the next 5 years, Jim has figured out the perfect combination of process and people skills to hire right. Jim has always been a firm believer that you can teach a person anything, with the lone exception being purpose. Someone’s purpose, or the “why” behind their behaviour, particularly in a work setting, is entirely individual. While Jim believes you cannot decide or influence someone’s purpose, you can most definitely find alignment between personal and organizational purposes. When your company is aligned with your people, and vice versa, magic happens. Work becomes play, challenges become opportunities, and the insurmountable seems not only achievable, but in reach! MORE ABOUT JIM: Jim believes People, it’s what matters. It’s this mantra that has helped the success of the Canadian Brewhouse, Plantlife and The Banquet. It is my belief as a Human Resources Professional that understanding our workforce is the first and most important step to running a profitable business. Purpose drives behaviour. I am fortunate to have spent the better part of the past decade with a company and executive team that passionately shares their purpose with their employees.
Is social media marketing for manufacturers really worth the effort? How should you market your brand in general? It may be hard to figure out where you fit in the social media world and what content to put out. In this episode of Making Chips, Jim and Jason talk about why social media marketing can make a positive impact on your business. Their answers aren’t what you expect! Connect with us:www.MakingChips.com/contact Prioritize Self-Care above your business Jim and Jason had a scary Halloween—but not for the reason you'd expect. They were preparing to record a couple of episodes for the podcast. Instead, Jim was rushed to the ER with a case of Gastritis. Among other factors, severe stress is one of the things that contributed to his illness. Running multiple businesses and caring for unhealthy parents took a toll on him. The moral of the story? Know what’s going on with your body, and take care of yourself. As a business owner, you have an obligation to care for your company. However, it is impossible to do so if you aren’t healthy. Proper self-care should be the entrepreneur’s #1 priority. Jim is already active and watches his diet, but wasn’t limiting his stress. It was a wake-up call for him and he hopes that it’s a wake-up call for listeners as well. Social Media marketing to promote company culture A listener pointed out that he doesn’t believe a machine shop must do any social media marketing. He doesn’t buy it. He believes that it’s a total waste of time for an industrial company. After all, what aerospace engineer goes on Facebook to look for a manufacturer? While Jim and Jason point out and understand that social media isn’t for everyone, there are some important reasons to utilize Social media. Firstly, you’re not creating posts on Facebook to attract buyers. You are doing it to promote your company culture. You can promote new talent or offer a behind the scenes take of what your company does. Social media allows a business to share their values with the world. It is THE most effective way to do so—and costs you nothing but time. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn—where do you begin? As much as you may not want to give credence to the importance of the social space, they point out that people build careers in social media. Instagram influencers make thousands of dollars promoting services or products in posts. Instagram is a great model for the manufacturing space because it allows you to share visuals in a meaningful way. You can share photos of parts, people in your business, or of projects you’re working on. Or perhaps a short video of work in progress or a how-to piece. Whatever it is, it allows you to build an authentic connection with your audience. If you’re providing valuable information, social media marketing for your brand can certainly be worth the time and effort. LinkedIn can also be a useful tool to attract new talent. A new hire came across some of the content Jim had shared on LinkedIn. He saw that Jim was hiring a C & C Machinist, and messaged him about the opportunity. He already knew—based on their social media presence—that the company would be a good fit. And he was! Marketing isn’t a waste of time when done properly Marketing doesn’t necessarily reap immediate rewards as far as attracting new clients. However, the immediate reward is how it impacts your company. As you build a website or define a marketing strategy, you are defining how you want your business presented to the world. What are your values? What are your specialties? What is the #1 thing you want the general public to know about your company? As you’re building a vision for your brand it helps lay out the vision for how you operate your business. You differentiate yourself in the industry by being different, and marketing helps you portray what makes you special. If you stand out and exploit what makes your business different, you attract the type of customers that are the right fit. They emphasize the importance of finding a good marketing agency to guide you through the process. It can make a world of difference. Here’s The Good Stuff! About this episode This week's featured founder is Jim Hogan,,, co-founder of a program called Socks for Heroes. Jim and his wife Carla started Socks for Heroes after their son, Donald, heroically gave his life in service to his country while deployed to Afghanistan. Why socks? In the time period that followed the tragedy of losing their son, they spent a lot of time with the Marines who served with him. During each of their conversations with these men, they asked them what they needed the most. Their answer was simple, socks. So Socks for Heroes does exactly what you would expect. They ship new pairs of socks to U.S. troops that are deployed overseas. They have shipped over 50 tons of socks, hygiene gear, and other essentials to Marine Corps and Army combat Infantry units. Throughout the month of November, every single episode of The Startup Story is going to feature founders that are Veterans of our Armed Forces. While Jim and Carla are not Veterans, it was their son's service and sacrifice that became the catalyst for Socks for Heroes and it is a Startup Story that needs to be told. With that said, this is a story like none we have never told before, so it would make sense that it begins like one has never begun before too. This is Jim Hogan's startup story. In this episode, you'll hear Socks for Heroes and the Southern California Marine Corp support group is a partnership between Jim and his wife Carla Jim and Carla's childhood, Jim was raised by his Marine father and his mother worked for the IRS, and Carla's father was a true example of an entrepreneur The amazing story of how his wife, Carla, and her sister set out to sell some gourmet picnic baskets to fund a trip to Europe, and instead sold $60,000 worth of picnic baskets in one day, leading them to launch a business which was later sold to Aladdin About Jim and Carla's son Donald, how he went to college for about an hour and then came home to tell his parents he joined the Marine Corps, how much he loved being a Marine, and later getting the devastating news that he was killed by an IED and how the Marines closed in around them to offer support and care The story of how Socks for Heroes actually began and the steps they took to create a 501c About how at the start, they sent 220 pairs of socks overseas and within six-weeks time they shipped 10,000 pairs to Afghanistan How Socks for Heroes is a program within the Southern California Marine Corps support group and several of the missions and projects they serve as part of the group The reason Jim and Carla keep going with their mission, “My son was a Marine and every Marine was my son's brother. Therefore, they are all our children. That is why we keep going.” How you can help support Jim and Carla's program, Socks for Heroes, and the other programs served through The Southern California Marine Corps support group “In this life there are two lines, one to do the work and one to take the credit. Always get in the first line because it's shorter and you'll meet better people.” – Jim Hogan, Socks for Heroes Resources from this episode Socks for Heroes: http://scmcsg.org/socks-for-heroes/ Email Jim at info@scmcsg.org to see how you can support their mission The Startup Story on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestartupstory/ Vortic Watches: https://vorticwatches.com/pages/military-edition-info Share the podcast The Startup Story community has been so incredible sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! This week, I’m talking with Jim Liston, the Director of Sport Science for Toronto FC. Jim was the first full time strength and conditioning coach hired in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy. He is also the founder and president of CATZ (Competitive Athlete Training Zone), one of the top training centers in the United States for professional and Olympic athletes. Jim helped launch the Sport Science Department of Toronto FC. He is an innovator committed to helping athletes reach their highest potential. We talk about how Jim collects and analyzes data on athletes, as well as the importance of putting the numbers into context and communicating them to the medical staff and players. He talks about managing player loads, the schedule leading up to games, and the importance of the “off-field stuff” in a player’s career. Finally, we talk about how Jim stays positive through the ups and downs of life and his role in a performance based business. While Jim works with professional athletes, there is a ton of information in this episode that the everyday athlete can take away and apply to their life and training!

In this episode, I interview Jim Park a lifelong entrepreneur and recent purveyor of The Living Water Movement. After working in finance and mortgage industry, Jim garnered much success. He had it all - the house, the cars, the wife, and the picket fence! But in his own words, he wasn't happy. He was saved and everything changed! In fact, have you ever abandoned property? Like millions of dollars worth of? You'll have to listen to see what happened! Next, Jim was set up and called to get into Social Media Marketing. With no coding or digital chops to necessarily speak of, Jim dove head in and learned the craft on his own. Like a true entrepreneur! After some success, just as he had experienced in the mortgage industry, God pulled Jim into a different direction. Knowing that we need only seek God's righteousness (Psalm 37:25), Jim knew that he wouldn't go hungry. After much prayer, and fellowship with his wife, Jim decided to get into the Living Water movement! (https://www.facebook.com/BettysLivingWater/) What can be more basic than water? We all need it. But not all water is created equal. While Jim does not provide any medical advice, he has become a believer in Kangen water (www.enagic.com) Kangen Water® is delicious water created from Enagic's innovative water technology. Not only do these devices filter your tap water, but they also produce ionized alkaline and acidic waters through electrolysis. These waters can be used for various purposes, including drinking, cooking, beauty, and cleaning. Jim himself uses the water as well as his family. (www.thelivingwater.co) From countless testimonies across the country and the world, Kangen water seems to cleanse and revitalize our biology literally from the inside out. Check it out for yourself. Contact Jim! Do your research, and pray to see if Kangen can rock your world!

This week on MakingChips, Jason asks Jim whether or not you really need a 5-axis machine. Every manufacturing company owner has to determine the right time to add a new piece of machinery to his or her shop. That decision isn’t always easy. More often than not, there are multiple good options that leave the leader with the daunting task of determining the best choice. Jim explains to Jason his rationale for a recent purchase making decision for Carr Tool and Machine and gives advice for making a big purchasing. Hear all that and more on this episode of MakingChips. Connect with us:www.MakingChips.com/contact 2 main factors that can help you make decisions about machinery When considering a big purchase of machinery for your shop, the decision largely depends on two factors. The first factor is what you currently make. Know your current customer demand and your ability to meet that demand. If you are having trouble with turn-around or customers are continually leaving your business because you can’t meet their demand, it might be time to upgrade to a new piece of machinery. The second factor is how will your company grow in the future. Considering what technology you need to integrate into your company to allow for growth and expansion will help you make a wise purchase. Buying a 5-axis machine should be a need-based purchase After originally planning to buy a 5-axis machine last summer, Jim recently purchased a 4-axis Mazak 500mm twin table horizontal machining center with full fourth axis machining capability. He explains that while he was unable to complete the deal on the 5-axis machine the 4-axis machine has served him well. He has been able to meet customer needs with the 4-axis horizontal machine. Jim also expressed that he hasn’t had the need for a 5-axis machine. When considering a machine tool purchase, Jim advises letting need be a key determining factor. Buying a piece of equipment that you already have a need for ensures that you get an immediate return on your investment. How to make a good purchasing decision It is difficult to balance the tendency to resist change with moving forward too quickly. The danger is that you purchase a piece of machinery that won’t give you a quick return on investment. It is wise to introduce technology incrementally. Jim encourages leaders to utilize the wisdom and experience of your team to help make educated decisions for your company. He also suggests reaching out to your customers to see if they need the kind of work that would justify purchasing a 5-axis machine. Will a 5-axis machine make or break your company? Not having a 5-axis machine will not keep Carr Machine and Tool from being competitive in the long run. While Jim chose not to buy the 5-axis machine yet, he will definitely be looking to purchase one in the near future. Knowing the plan for future growth and expansion gives Jim a head start in finding the skilled labor or training current employees so that they can run the machine effectively. Jim and Jason would love to hear from you. Have you purchased a 5-axis machine? If so why? Here’s The Good Stuff! This week, we finish season one by figuring out the fifteen attractions that will become the core of Apex, The Peak Of Themed Entertainment. While Jim is more than happy to explain how dumb some of his ideas are, it becomes an issue of placement as they try to find five good attractions for the Hero, Villain, and Battle areas of their park. It's harder than it sounds.
This week, we find ourselves in a pickle to find some kind of sponsorship for an attraction at our park. While Jim is happy with his first choice, Scottye fields somewhere in the neighborhood of 741 phone calls with various corporations and other assorted odds and ends before going with his gut instincts and creating an attraction for the ages, or at least the old ages. Please note that this week's episode and next week's episode will both be dropping on Wednesdays before a two week layoff before the beginning of SEASON 2~
Let Them Eat Pie was all about Professor Pyg forcing Gotham's elite to actually eat the poor they have been oppressing. While Jim is striving to stop Pyg, Penguin is getting Martin to spy on Sofia. Bruce has gone around the bend and wants no help from Alfred. Read More... This week, it's all about that consumerism and a little bit of fun as Jim and Scottye do their best to give APEX a gift show themed attraction. While Jim sets out to reinvent the entirety of Apex's theme, at least a little, Scottye in turn uses the power of the multiple choice questionnaire to put everyone in their place whether they like it or not. In the end, both do remarkable similar things and both go trackless and, eventually, get their park visitors to open their wallets and dump them into our coffers, which is really all any theme park has as a goal.
Another week, another ton of books. While Jim has been down a bit on EVERYTHING lately, Eric tries to remain positive and Reggie and the rest of the GFC show up to do their part as well. Enjoy! Jim has a unique entrepreneurial experience moving from one family business to another. After growing up in one family business, he left and started on a new venture that would eventually turn into a first generation family business. In this episode, Jim talks about his work with Advance Sign Group, working with his immediate family, and how EO helped to shape some of his business decisions as he was getting his new company on track. Key Takeaways: [1:15] Jim shares his lifeline: Growing up, Jim had a good understanding of work ethic, and seeing how transformative the food service industry business was. After college, he went into the manufacturing side of the family business and was involved in several departments. [5:07] He had worked in the business for about 20 years when he realized that he really had an entrepreneurial spirit that he needed to explore (outside of the food service industry). While dabbling in other ventures, he secured Advanced Sign Group in April of 2001, which was a little more in his wheelhouse as a full manufacturing business. [9:29] Advanced Sign Group became a family business when Jim’s wife joined to help with the business operations while Jim focused on sales and building new relationships. When their son graduated from college, he came on in sales and wrote a business plan and they’ve set him up to eventually take over the business. Since their son got involved, they have quadrupled their size. [13:17] It was a process to make Advanced Signs a family business. When Jim’s wife joined the business, her talent was in project management. While Jim was more focused on gathering customers, pitching sales, and company maintenance, his wife served as the relationship manager for the account once the sale was made. It was very good teaming at the beginning. [16:33] When their son first came to him with the business plan, he wasn’t sure if it was out of desperation or genuine desire for being in the family business. As they grew their family business, it developed a little differently than when he was joining his family business. It’s truly a first-generation family business. [22:10] When Jim joined EO, his forum gave him an outlet that served as an advisory board as he worked on the business. EO was a tremendous help, especially when he first gotted started. [25:57] What do the next stages look like for Jim and his wife? They are in the middle of a ten-year plan, and they’ve been looking internally as individuals to see what drives and inspires them. Jim and his wife plan to travel, and they’ve also been deciding what kind of parents they want to be for their married children, and their future grandchildren. Jim has been talking with his own mom about how they want to shape this. [32:05] In regards to the business, they will be able to be present for the future due to successor and management team they have. They have also been implementing the EOS system. Over the last three years, they’ve been building up their personnel and management team to get the right people in place. [36:00] Sharing stories can serve as a release valve. When people are on the other side, it’s nice to see that they made it work. And if you’re in the middle of something, it can be helpful to share your story so you can garner some discussions around it. By sharing some of his story, Jim was able to solidify his stance on investing in risk for a reward. [47:34] This podcast is a great opportunity for people to share their stories, especially being able to put a story to the people you may meet at social events. "It's back to square one" says the Wall Street Journal after the collapse of Republican proposals to repeal and replace The Affordable Care Act. President Trump says his plan is to "let Obamacare fail." This episode looks at how any reform of America's healthcare system - whether by Republicans or Democrats - is so difficult. Whether it's controlling costs, rationing care or extending coverage to all, there are no easy answers. Today, the future of healthcare is uncertain and coverage for many millions of people hangs in the balance. Our guest, Megan McArdle, a columnist at Bloomberg View explains why The Affordable Care Act is flawed and that many consumers have misconceptions about the true costs of health insurance. "What people are doing is they're gaming the system," she says about those who have moved in and out of healthcare marketplaces. When an illness or medical emergency strikes, many people without employer-based health coverage are "signing up for a few months, using a ton of services and then dropping it again." Jim and Richard debate the future of healthcare from different perspectives. While Jim argues for a more free-market approach, Richard says the only way that a system of universal coverage can work is if everyone has to sign up for coverage, however unpopular that may be. "The penalties for not having insurance should be greater than they were under the Obama Administration," he says. Megan McArdle is the author of "The Upside of Down: Why Failing Well Is The Key To Success." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jim Burnstein, the primary writer of D3 and the Director of Screenwriting at the University of Michigan joins Mike and Tommy to discuss how he got involved in the film, why he originally had the Ducks losing, how Disney made him change it, and much more. Show notes: A little profile on Jim to get to know him better. Here's his IMDB. Here's a look a Renaissance Man, Jim's first movie. Ted Orion, who was originally Ted Hunter. For the uninitiated read all about Ted Lindsay and Orion, the hunter in Greek mythology. For reference: This is Steve Brill. The confidence speech, minus Orion throwing the puck up and catching it. While Jim was writing D3, Brill was directing Heavyweights. To be fair, it's another classic: Thanks to @ClintThrasher for the #QuackQuestion. Ep 23: While Jim and Eric tried to tighten things up last week, they are back to their old ways. This podcast took three tries and two days to record and is a long one indeed! The longer format gives them a chance to talk about the new Robo Batman, The Truth and every other book this week. We also learn that Jim's laptop may or may not have porn on it and that Eric's 7-eleven is closing soon. Thankfully, Dan's Geek News and Ryan's Other side segment break up the nonsense.Books Reviewed:Batman #41Batman/Superman #21Earth 2 Society #1New Suicide Squad #9Constantine: The Hellblazer #1All-Star Section Eight #1Injustice: Year Four #6Batman: Arkham Knight #17Harley Quinn #17Red Hood/Arsenal #1Gotham Academy #7Detective Comics #41Starfire #1Catwoman #41Click HERE to check us out on iTunes and be sure to give us a quick reviewIf you want to send us mail, send it to weirdsciencedccomics@gmail.com and remember, we will read EVERY one on the podcast.

Absolutely you do! When rumors of downsizing begin to fly, Dwight does whatever he can to earn immunity for himself, even cozying up to arch-enemy Jim.
