In her first year as a bikepack racer Jen Kelly has already racked up an impressive resume. She entered into 3 bikepacking races this summer and won them all! She's also a professional poker player who picked up cycling 4 years ago when she moved into a condo next to a rails to trails. She quickly fell in love with it and just wanted to ride further and further. Last year she put her career, as a professional poker player, on hold to focus on riding her bike. Her first bikepacking race was the inaugural Great American Wheel Race, a 3,600 mixed surface race across America which she placed 4th overall and 1st Female. Just 6 weeks later she entered the 900 mile Big Sky Spactacularie in Montana where she took 1st overall. Then only 5 days after finishing Big Sky she entered the 1,750 mile Montana Bike Odyssey and took the overall win again! Needless to say her gamble to focus on bikepacking is paying off! We had a great chat and it was great to talk to someone who is new to the sport and already having so much success. Dr. Jaclynn Moskow is a trained physician scientist, writer, healthcare business consultant, and well known professional poker player. The medical industrial complex, much like a high-stakes poker game, operates on a grand scale where the players are institutions, corporations, and policy makers, but the chips are human lives and well-being. Just as a skilled poker player might exploit less experienced opponents, we're seeing a system that prioritizes profit over patient care. The 'house' - in this case, big pharma, insurance companies, and certain healthcare conglomerates - seems to hold all the cards, making rules that benefit their bottom line rather than public health. On todays episode we learn more about medical school training, how a physician is trained to think, what happens when the doctor becomes the patient, what does it mean to overcome mental health or health problems, psychedelics and what poker can teach us about life. Marcus chats with Liv Boeree, one of the most successful female poker players of all time. Liv is the only woman to have won both a European Poker Tour event and a World Series of Poker bracelet, and has amassed tournament winnings of over $3.5m dollars over her career. They talk about what makes a world-class poker player, whether poker skills are born of nature or nurture, and the experience of being a woman in a majority male-dominated game and how to exploit that fact. Liv was a cofounder of Raising for Effective Giving, which educated poker players about the ideas of giving effectively and managed to raise over $14m for top charities over its lifetime. This idea of creating win-win scenarios is a persistent theme in Liv's life, so much so that she is now hosting her own podcast called Win-Win with Liv Boeree, and has given two TED talks on the main stage, the latest of which is specifically focused on the win-win mindset and its potential to counteract Moloch traps and races to the bottom. Dr. Annie Duke is a former professional poker player, an author, speaker, and consultant in the decision-making space. She is the author of the national bestseller, Thinking in Bets, and, the topic of today's interview, 2022's Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away. “Quitting's for the weak” reverberates through today's culture. Of course, quitting just because something is hard is not a good idea. However, we don't tend to evaluate whether what we spend our time on is worth “buckling down” for. We highlight the journey, not the destination when it's really the destination that we should be focused on. In our last episode (116), with Dr. Adam Alter, we mentioned Dr. Angela Duckworth's Grit and Dr. Annie Duke's Quit. Having already dived into Dr. Duckworth's work with her in episode 21, I wanted to hear what might initially seem like a conflicting view.Topics:Is quitting a counterargument or a compliment to grit? Strategies for assessing when to quit"Explore and exploit" mindset: how does that connect to quit and grit? How to apply exploring/exploiting seasons in life"What books have had an impact on you?""What advice do you have for teenagers?"Bio:Annie loves to dive deep into decision-making under uncertainty. Her latest obsession is on the topic of quitting. In particular, she is on a mission to rehabilitate the term and get people to be proud of walking away from things. Annie is an author, speaker, and consultant in the decision-making space, as well as Special Partner focused on Decision Science at First Round Capital Partners, a seed stage venture fund. Annie's latest book, Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away, was released in 2022 from Portfolio, a Penguin Random House imprint. Her previous book, Thinking in Bets, is a national bestseller. As a former professional poker player, she has won more than $4 million in tournament poker. During her career, Annie won a World Series of Poker bracelet and is the only woman to have won the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions and the NBC National Poker Heads-Up Championship. She retired from the game in 2012. Prior to becoming a professional poker player, Annie was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship to study Cognitive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2023 Annie completed her PhD in Cognitive Psychology at UPenn. Annie is the co-founder of The Alliance for Decision Education, a non-profit whose mission is to improve lives by empowering students through decision skills education. She is a member of the National Board of After-School All-Stars and the Board of Directors of the Franklin Institute.
