The fire claimed 72 lives but despite the relentless battle families and campaigners have faced, no one has yet been brought to justice. However, this hasn't stopped survivors and bereaved families fighting to make sure the legacy of Grenfell's victims lives on. Lucy and Lee talk to Sandra Ruiz from the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission. Sandra speaks about the importance of collective community action and how that has helped relatives and survivors take ownership of the decision-making process in the ways Grenfell is memorialised, including the more organic methods of remembering those who died.Find out more about the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission (https://www.grenfelltowermemorial.co.uk/) Hosted on Acast. CLICK HERE! To send us a message! Ask us a Question or just let us know what you think! The rise and fall of Abraham Lincoln represents one of America's most profound historical narratives – a story of a man who emerged from virtual political obscurity to lead a nation through its darkest hour. When the Political Encyclopedia of 1860 was published, Lincoln wasn't deemed significant enough to warrant even a single mention. Yet within months, this relatively unknown figure would ascend to the presidency during the most divisive period in American history. His election triggered the secession of Southern states and ignited a conflict that would redefine the nation. What's rarely discussed is Lincoln's extraordinary unpopularity during his presidency. In the South, he was reviled as an existential threat, while many Northerners criticized his wartime tactics, including the suspension of habeas corpus and imprisonment of newspaper editors sympathetic to the Confederate cause. The history we learn about Lincoln has been sanitized over time, smoothing over the complex and often controversial figure he truly was.The path to Lincoln's assassination began long before John Wilkes Booth entered Ford's Theatre. Early plots against Lincoln's life were thwarted thanks to Kate Warrens, the first female detective in the Pinkerton agency. Once war broke out, Lincoln demonstrated remarkable political cunning, using the Emancipation Proclamation as a strategic war measure that only freed slaves in Confederate states – areas where he had no actual authority – while maintaining slavery in Union-controlled territories.Lincoln's cabinet strategy of appointing his fiercest political rivals – men who actively sought his job – demonstrates a leadership philosophy almost unimaginable in modern politics. This "team of rivals" approach helped guide the nation through its bloodiest conflict, culminating in a Union victory that Lincoln would enjoy for only days before his assassination forever altered the course of Reconstruction and American history.

ANYONE WHO'S DONE much driving around Oregon — especially along the coast — knows the state's bridges have a particular and distinctive style. That style is actually hard to put your finger on, isn't it? The bridges themselves are very different from one another. Many of them aren't even built with the same materials. The spectacular structure that soars over Coos Bay could not be much different in size, technique, and style from the elegant little archway that links Oregon City with West Linn; but even if you'd never seen them before, you could just look at either one of them and instantly identify it as an Oregon bridge. The common thread linking these classic Oregon bridges was Conde McCullough, the legendary bridge designer and engineer who led the teams that designed and built them. What if you could get one dollar growing in two places at once while creating an income tax write-off just like the Smith Maneuver, but also get a life insurance death benefit for free? In this episode, we explore how Canadian investors can use a Smith Maneuver-like strategy on a high early cash value participating whole life insurance policy to leverage for investments, while creating a tax-deductible interest expense. By funding a specifically designed participating whole life insurance policy and borrowing against the cash value to invest in the same assets they would have originally chosen—stocks, real estate, or other investment opportunities—the Canadian investor not only creates a valuable tax write-off from the loan interest, but also benefits from a free death benefit that will pay out upon death of the insured person. While this strategy can be supercharged when the policy is purchased inside of a Canadian corporation, today we will focus on what this strategy would look like for the unincorporated Canadian investor with part 2 of this episode coming soon for our Canadian incorporated business owner listeners. This Immediate Financing Arrangement (IFA) leveraged permanent insurance strategy shares similarities with the Smith Maneuver, with some subtle differences. The main value-add for using the Smith Maneuver is converting non-tax deductible interest on your home mortgage to tax deductible interest, while this leveraged insurance strategy creates tax deductible interest with a free permanent insurance death benefit as a bonus. While this strategy can be used as a second leveraged investment strategy alongside the Smith Maneuver, the leveraged participating whole life insurance strategy can be seen by some as more conservative as you are not leveraging against your primary residence and instead only leveraging against an insurance policy. If you're a Canadian investor looking to create multiple wealth-building streams without sacrificing one goal for another, this strategy offers the best of both worlds: growing your investments while securing a legacy. What you'll learn:Learn how funding a participating whole life insurance policy can enable you to achieve tax-deductible interest and estate protection while investing in the same assets you had planned to invest in.Discover how this leveraged participating whole life insurance strategy provides free insurance for your estate, effectively combining legacy planning while continuing your original investment growth plans.Understand the long-term benefits of using an Immediate Financing Arrangement (IFA) to create multiple growing financial buckets, one for investments and one for legacy, without restricting your investing potential.Tune in now to discover how this conservative permanent insurance leverage strategy commonly known as an Immediate Financing Arrangement (IFA) can supercharge your wealth-building strategy while offering invaluable tax benefits and legacy planning simultaneously.Discover which phase of wealth creation you are in. The Jaffa orange, a fruit that once symbolized prosperity and collaboration, is now tied to a complex and painful history. Before the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Jaffa's citrus industry was world-renowned, celebrated for its sweet, vibrant fruit. This thriving sector, cultivated by both Jewish and Arab farmers, symbolized the region's agricultural success. However, with the eruption of conflict following the United Nations' proposed partition plan, Jaffa became a flashpoint of violence. Thousands of Palestinians were displaced, and the agricultural heart of the region was shattered. The flourishing groves that once exemplified collaboration were destroyed, leaving the Jaffa orange to embody not only agricultural achievement but also political turmoil. How did the Jaffa orange, a shared symbol of Jewish-Arab harmony, transform into a powerful political emblem after the 1948 Nakba? What role did it play in the founding of Israel, and how did it shape Palestinian identity and resistance? What became of the groves, and why does the Jaffa orange continue to resonate as a symbol of loss and struggle despite the disappearance of the land that nurtured it?In the final part of this series, John and Patrick delve into the tangled legacy of the Jaffa orange, uncovering its deep ties to the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the enduring significance of this storied fruit.-----------In Sponsorship with Cornell University: Dyson Cornell SC Johnson College of Business-----------Join the History of Fresh Produce Club for ad-free listening, bonus episodes, book discounts and access to an exclusive chatroom community.Support us!Share this episode with your friendsGive a 5-star ratingWrite a review -----------Instagram, TikTok, Threads:@historyoffreshproduceEmail: historyoffreshproduce@gmail.com

In Part II of our mini-series 'How to Shape a Legacy', we focus on legacy as it applies to businesses and brands. In this episode, Maya talks to BRC Chief Creative Officer, Christian Lachel, about the closest thing a brand can have to having a soul: a set of values, that lend to a series of decisions, actions, and events that become the lessons we impart, and hopefully, the stories that we tell when we feel like shedding light.   In part 1, Senior Writer, Rich Procter, unpacks legacy as many things: a gift, a call to action, a glimmer of hope, a path…But in the end, a great legacy teaches us that life is not about being rewarded for good behavior; it's about doing the right thing, despite one's personal gain. And all of that is possible, even for things as seemingly mechanical as corporations.   Christian is no stranger to the concept of legacy. He's worked on many corporate archive teams for brands like Ford, Coca-Cola, Caterpillar, and Johnnie Walker, helping the best of them define the best in themselves. Whether you're an iconic brand that has an archive or a brand new company that's dreaming of one, a legacy is possible! But as Christian and Maya discuss, no matter who you are, your legacy is only as good as the people responsible for passing it on.    To learn more about Christian, visit: https://bit.ly/3HAMyfE   To learn more about BRC: www.brcweb.com   Special thanks to the sponsors of this miniseries, The World Experience Organization, a global institution dedicated to promoting the experience economy, improving the quality of experiences, and enhancing the opportunities for experiential creators worldwide. This is a special supplemental episode this week featuring friend of the show and investigative journalist Samantha Asumadu (@SamanthaAsumadu) This episode continues Sam Asumadu's interview with Tom Fowler on the topic of the Spycops inquiry, and the degree to which the British state has attempted to scuttle any and all social justice protests, while at the same time ensuring the far right has a free pass. Tom is the host of the Spycops Info Podcast, which is available here: https://spycops.info/ If you missed part 1, check it out here: https://five.libsyn.com/show/episodes/view/32524677 Spycops may not be a familiar story to American listeners, but the summarized version is: the British state has recently admitted to using secret deep-cover police to infiltrate activist groups for over 30 years, using stolen identities and encouraging officers to enter into relationships with activists (to include fathering children) only to abandon them once their mission ended. As Sam describes in this episode, the surveillance (and sabotage of activist groups) is something still happening to this day.
