Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. The USMNT finished fourth in the Concacaf Nations League after losing 2-1 to Canada in the consolation match in Los Angeles on Sunday. The team did not improved their performance from the semifinal loss to Panama and now the Gold Cup is far more important this summer for Mauricio Pochettino and this group. Canada was the better team in this match, which is even more impressive considering that they lost Alphonso Davies to injury early on. Alistair Johnston was outstanding, Jonathan David was excellent throughout, and they took control after a strong USMNT start and played with a chip on their shoulder throughout. The USMNT did not have that chip on their shoulder and they're in this weird spot where they are good enough to see teams do what Panama did to them on Thursday, sit back deep and soak up pressure and put numbers behind the ball. However, they're not good enough to straight up outplay teams on their level. And yes, Canada is on their level. No idea how they will fare as the underdog against teams that are among the best in the world. They'll see all of these sorts of teams in the World Cup next summer and there's a lot of work to do between now and then. Plenty more thoughts in the video.Atlanta United earned a draw on the road in Cincinnati in a gritty performance during the international break. Losing Tristan Muyumba to injury made it even more difficult, as did conceding twice in quick succession in the second half. However, they battled back and created an opportunity that led to an own goal. The 2-2 felt fair, even if Atlanta will feel like they were good enough to win on the day. Nashville and Chicago have won three in a row in MLS after slow starts in the first couple of matches. Austin won yesterday, even if they were extremely wasteful in front of goal and let San Diego hang around. New Zealand qualified for the World Cup by defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in the Oceania qualifying final. They're back in the tournament for the first time since 2010. New Caledonia will have one chance to reach their first World Cup via the inter-confederation playoffs next year. Information is coming out about the U.S. bid for the 2031 Women's World Cup and it could see multiple games being played in multiple Concacaf countries. Great article from Henry Bushnell of Yahoo Sports over the weekend with the latest. Excited to see how everything comes together with the bid. Plenty more stories from a jam-packed Espresso in the video. Enjoy!More Espresso on Wednesday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

Last time Celtic were at Fir Park it took a whole lot of character as well as a touch of class by Matt O'Riley to ensure the Hoops headed home with all 3 points. This time around those traits will be needed more than ever as the Bhoys look to get back on track after the disappointment of last week's draw with Kilmarnock. Brendan Rodgers will be boosted by the return of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston and both players may well be thrown straight back in to the starting XI. With 12 games of the league campaign remaining there's very little margin for error and the challenge is now there for Callum McGregor and his team-mates they have what it takes to reclaim the title. Gordan Duncan is joined by Mark Wilson and Gordon Dalziel as the trio reflect on Celtic's late victory over Hibernian with a penalty which sealed all 3 points. There was plenty of discussion around the awarded penalties in particular the Alistair Johnston head clash.
Celtic remain 5 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after today's 1-0 win over Ross County but the performance from Brendan Rodgers' men left a lot to be desired at times. The Hoops got off to the perfect start with a deflected Alistair Johnston strike in the very first minute but that would be the end of the scoring on the day - much to the surprise of most in attendance. Luis Palma had a chance to extend the lead from the spot, but the Honduran winger missed TWO attempts to do so, which epitomised a frustrating day. A look at the bigger picture always provides perspective but Rodgers himself will concede that this Celtic side could - and should - perform so much better. An interesting final week of the transfer window now awaits. Brendan Rodgers hadn't lost a single match in domestic cup competition as Celtic manager before this afternoon's clash with Kilmarnock. He has now. And he and his side can have no complaints. Injuries to key players Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Reo Hatate can explain part of the problem but that aside Celtic lacked a spark and a desire and barely troubled the Kilmarnock goal all afternoon. We knew we'd face a robust challenge and on the day the players failed to meet that challenge. The work Celtic now do in the remaining days of the transfer window could define our season. Tino & Paddy were on the mics following a disappointing day in Ayrshire. Listen in full at The Celtic Exchange Plus - Free Trial at thecelticexchange.com Learn more about your ad choices. In Ange Postecoglou's fourth transfer window we've made key additions in Yuki Kobayashi, Alistair Johnston, Tomoki Iwata and Hyeongyu Oh, but have also lost big hitters Josip Juranovic and (very likely) Giorgos Giakoumakis. So are we better off for our January trading? Is there anything the club should have handled differently? Are we happy with the work that Ange, Mark Lawwell and Michael Nicholson continue to do? With confirmation that Josip Juranovic has joined Union Berlin in a deal that could be worth up to £10m we've now seen the first example of Ange Postecoglou's transfer policy coming full circle. Signed by the Australian for £2.5M, Juranovic leaves as a league winner and could net the club up to four times what they paid for him. This is the right move for all parties. As Ange himself says: “I don't think there needs to be winners and losers out of this”. In his place comes another World Cup star in the shape of Alistair Johnston, almost four years his junior and looking every bit the accomplished full back. A similar strategy looks likely in terms of Giorgos Giakoumakis' imminent departure, with a profit on his signing, and a younger striker taking his place. Both players will leave with everyone's best wishes but this is a new approach by Celtic - steered by Ange and Michael Nicholson – and it's only going to see us continue to improve! Following confirmation that Japanese centre-half Yuki Kobayashi will become Celtic's first signing of the January window, and with Canadian right-back Alistair Johnston set to follow, is it clear that Ange Postecoglou has now prioritised Celtic's defence as an area for improvement? Whilst our league form has been excellent so far, we've still conceded almost a goal a game (13 from 15 games) in the Scottish Premiership, whilst also conceding 15 from just 6 Champions League group games. Ange made similar moves in the summer to strengthen defensively with the additions of Moritz Jenz (on loan from Lorient) and Alexandro Bernabei arriving from Argentina, but will he be happy to put away the cheque book (for now) once Kobayashi and Johnston arrive at Celtic Park? ▲ Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast presented by Macey's Sports! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps and CanMNT after a big few weeks for each of them. First, they start with the Whitecaps, as they dive into a new acquisition, that of Sebastian Berhalter via trade from the Columbus Crew, before looking at a potential new signing, that of Andre Rawls, the goalkeeper currently on trial with the 'Caps. Then, they look at a departure (of sorts), as it looks like Kwame Awuah won't be signing with the 'Caps despite a solid showing on trial. Afterwards, they look at the 'Caps preseason games so far, and why it's been ridiculous that both games haven't been streamed, which is the sign of a bigger problem from MLS. Lastly, to round off the 'Caps chatter, they look at the news that former academy coach, Bob Birarda, has pled guilty to several counts of sexual crimes that occurred over his time at the club, seeing what impact that will have on the 'Caps, who remain under investigation by MLS. In the second part of the show, they then dive into some CanMNT chatter, looking back at a January window to remember for the team, one that has them one foot into the World Cup. They start by looking at some of the individuals who made that happen, including Sam Adekugbe, Atiba Hutchinson and Alistair Johnston, among others, before looking at some other storylines that stood out from the camp. Lastly, they finish with a fun question - what could this Canadian team's ceiling be in Qatar? Make sure to check out The Third Sub Podcast on Twitter, @thirdsubpod, as well as on Instagram, @thethirdsub. You can find Macey's Sports on Twitter @SportsMaceys, and on Instagram @maceyssports.
