On this special episode of the Creative Riding Motorcycle Podcast, we're on a mission: This week's mission is to help authors Nancy Gerloff and Mark Augustyn reach a financial goal. Their book 'The Adventures of Mimi and Moto the Motorcycle Monkeys' has been featured at MotoAmerica, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and is available on Amazon.com. It introduces girls and boys to motorcycles and gets the whole family reading along while enjoying bold, beautifully-colored illustrations. As fellow motorcyclists and parents, they knew that there were no great children's books about motorcycles. So they did what any good parent would do- they made one! Now, with the first book on bookshelves, they need our help to get their second book published on time. 'Mimi and Moto Ride the Alphabet' is in the works!! Mark and Nancy would like to have the book available by spring of 2019, but they need our support! They have launched a kickstarter campaign that has successfully raised 66% of their $5,500 goal. They need our help to make it that last 1/3 of the way to the checkered flag. They aren't asking for a fortune. Just a few dollars here and there can help, but they need it by October 27th!! Please act now, and make sure to look at the generous rewards being offered for each level of support. Remember, there is no better way to guarantee the future of motorcycling than introducing children and their families to riding. And there's no better way to lead them on a colorful adventure than to get them riding along with Mimi and Moto!! please follow Mark and Nancy in their quest to bring the moto monkeys to life via the following URLs: https://mimiandmoto.com/ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mimiandmoto/mimi-and-moto-ride-the-alphabet-childrens-motorcyc/ https://www.facebook.com/MimiandMoto/ https://www.instagram.com/mimiandmoto/ https://twitter.com/MimiandMoto

About Mike Bell: From the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame - "Mike "Too Tall" Bell was one of America’s leading motocross and Supercross racers of the late 1970s and early '80s. He rode for Yamaha during his entire pro career. His biggest claim to fame was winning the 1980 AMA Supercross Championship, but Bell proved very versatile throughout his seven-year professional career, winning a total of 20 AMA and Trans-AMA nationals. Bell was born in Los Angeles on August 8, 1957. His father, Bill, was an avid racer and well-known tuner who did development work for American Honda on its four-stroke desert racing machines during the late 1960s. Mike began riding at age 10 up in the mountains outside Los Angeles where his family had a cabin, but unlike many of his contemporaries who started much younger, Bell did not start racing until he was 14. Once he got on the track however, with a new Maico, it didn’t take long for Bell to go right to the top of the highly competitive Southern California motocross scene...." Read more here
Steve McLaughlin is in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. That induction could have been for a number of reasons. Steve joins us to discuss the 2015 AMA Pro Grand National Flat Track Season Finale in Vegas and the inaugural Superprestigio of the Americas. As a third generation motorcycle rider/racer, Steve has been on all sides of the sport of motorcycle racing. He roared on the scene as a fast amateur and went on to be a multi time winner at Daytona International Speedway. One of the most memorable races had to be his victory in the first official AMA Superbike race at the World Center of Racing. That race was a race long duel with Reg Pridmore. McLaughlin was riding the underpowered but lightweight airhead BMW R90S Butler and Smith airhead. His family history of creating motorcycle race events and series ultimately led to his creating World Superbike working closely with "Big" Bill France! Considering his lifetime body of work and success in racing we are wondering how we will get through all the topics in just one show. For certain, we will discuss his interest in Grand National Flat Track as promoter of the Charlotte Motor Speedway round, Sacramento Mile and the Flat Track Finale and Superprestigio! Brian assisted Hall of Famer, Dave Mungenast in the creation of a vintage motorcycle museum in St. Louis. He then helped create the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Leeds, Alabama. Today Barber is considered the premier vintage motorcycle museum in the world and Brian oversees the restoration work in their shop as Technical Director. If you have a Clymer Service Manual published from 1971 through 1984, the teardown work was likely performed by Brian Slark. Both of the legendary men will be on hand at the 16th annual Riding Into History event this weekend!
Mert Lawwill won the 1969 Grand National Championship. In 1970 Bruce Brown produced On Any Sunday featuring Mert's bid to repeat the feat. Did Mert know he was to be the star of that epic motorcycle film? He tells us all about that in this episode. On Any Sunday made Mert and a host of other flat track riders household name amongst motorcyclist and a wider audience as well. When Mert moved from Idaho to California to race motorcycles, little did he know how it would shape and mold his future. Racing at the Agajanian produced events at Ascot Park taught the man much about many aspects of racing. He discovered that many of the competitors were modifying frames so Mert began the process of frame modifications that ultimately led to him being not only in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame but the Mountainbike Hall of Fame as well. His bicycle suspension has won a World Championship! Is Mert the father of the Mountain Bike? Winning the Grand National Championship and being in both of those Hall of Fames would be enough for most people but not Mert. We will discuss his contribution to mankind with the creation of Mert's Hands. The prosthetic hands and the soon to be released prosthetic arms will perhaps be the primary thing he will be remembered for.
