In this episode we're diving into the fundamentals of how to get strong, and our guest is one of the best in the game at taking novices to pretty serious levels of strength. Andy Baker began his career in the strength & conditioning industry in 2001, as an intern while attending Texas A&M University. Like many people in the early 2000s he witnessed 9/11 and thought exercise science lectures might not be exactly where he needed to be, so in 2003, he stepped away from college and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served multiple combat tours in Iraq between 2003-2007. While serving on active duty he continued to coach clients and finished his undergraduate degree in Health & Sport Science from American Military University. In 2007, he opened the doors to Kingwood Strength & Conditioning (now Baker Personal Training) and he has served as the owner and lead trainer for the past 16 years! His clients range from Division I college athletes to people in their 80s! As you'll hear in the episode he's been extensively involved in Starting Strength working with Mark Rippetoe, including co-authoring the current edition of Practical Programming for Strength Training and the Barbell Prescription. He has also competed as a Raw and Drug-Free Powerlifter with the Natural Athlete Strength Association. In 2010, I won the N.A.S.A. Grand Nationals in the 198 lb raw division. My winning total included a 529 lb Squat, 380 lb Bench Press, and 562 lb Deadlift. We didn't work it into today's discussion, but his rebrand from strength and conditioning to personal training has also involved a refocus on older adults and strength training for longevity. As that space grows, he has made some really important contributions to that expanding part of the fitness industry.

In this week's episode, we discuss the mind bendy movie "Everything Everywhere All At Once". Then, Adam spent most of the day detailing the RS4 only to encounter power steering problems - naturally the day before A&K Eurowerx's Cars & Coffee the next day. That's the way it goes sometimes. Adam's allergies are at a 10, Bruce spots some Hondas (a matte S2000 and a Ridgeline crying out for death), and AJ talks driver that cut people off. NY passes a Right To Repair bill, and Ford is embracing the online-only, zero-negotiation, car delivery model. How will the market react? In the second half, we name car or truck mods that people think are cool but really aren't. Case in point? Challenger splitter guards (see this episode's cover). Bruce flexes his Grand National knowledge for a second. Adam talks plaid headliner for his RS4 since the factory liner is starting to sag. AJ builds a Lotus and then brings us some trivia in the form of car riddles. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brokecarsnobs/message

Greg Bimm has been the band director at Marian Catholic in Chicago for 44 years. During his time there his bands have been consistently excellent both on the marching field and on the stage, including Bands of America's Grand National Champion seven times and a whopping 40 straight years undefeated in their class at the Illinois Superstate competition. Links: Marian Catholic High School Band Persichetti: Symphony Biography: Greg Bimm has been Director of Bands at Marian Catholic High School since 1977. Under his direction, the Marian Band has grown from 70 to over 280 members, has earned over 600 awards and honors, and has become one of the premier high school band programs in the United States. Mr. Bimm's history with Bands of America dates back to 1981 when the Marian Catholic marching band came to the BOA Summer Workshop/Festival (now the Summer Symposium) to serve as the "lab band." Directors enrolled in the Directors Workshops observed marching teaching theory in practice with the Workshop faculty and the Marian Catholic Band. Since then, the Marian Catholic bands are among the most honored in BOA history. Marian has been named the BOA Grand National Champions seven times and is the only marching band to win the Grand National Champion title three consecutive years. They have participated in 21 consecutive Grand Nationals, numerous Regional Championships and the BOA Summer Nationals held in the 1980s, winning five Summer National titles. The Marian Catholic Symphonic Band was one of only eight bands invited to perform at the first National Concert Band Festival in 1992, held at Northwestern University and has performed again in 1995 and 1998. Mr. Bimm is a member of the 2005 Summer Symposium faculty. Most recently, Mr. Bimm was part of the teaching staff for the Bands of America Honor Band that appeared in the 2005 Tournament of Roses Parade. Ronnie Richards, an NRCHA Hall of Fame Member, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday.  Ronnie Richards was born in Davenport, Iowa, but his family moved to Sacramento when he was eight. The Richards had long been involved with horses – his grandfather had been a horse trainer and mule trader and his father was an outstanding horseman, as well. Four years later Ronnie traded for a standardbred/thoroughbred mare he called Nita. She had originally been shown by Don Dodge but had subsequently been used for stake racing. He won his first stock horse class on Nita, then went on to win the next 45 consecutive stock horse classes he entered! The pair was never beaten in a junior stock horse class. In 1955, when he turned 18, Ronnie started his own horse training business in Irvine, where he traded training one of Glen Thompson’s horses for the use of six tie stalls and a one-room cabin. Soon Ronnie began to appear in the winners’ circle, starting with Touch Of Texas at the Grand Nationals in 1959. He won the Junior Pacific Coast division “A” on Eddie Reed and in subsequent seasons won more year-end championships in that division that any individual in history, Lucky Libra, on whom he won California’s richest stock horse event in 1961, was a favorite horse for Ronnie, and his many titles included the 1966 Santa Barbara Nationals championship on Jimmy Wood as well as the Cow Palace Mare Class on Speedy Cash, in 1972. Mona Lisa was originally trained by Joe Yanez, then went to Don Dodge and finally to Ronnie and he and the great unregistered mare dazzle spectators and trainers nationwide. Mona Lisa is still considered one of the greatest reined cow horses of all time and was the first horse to win all three bridle horse classes at the Cow Palace. In 1974, he rode Lisa Chick, Mona Lisa’s only foal, to win the Stock Horse Stakes Championship in Monterey and the Mare Class at the Cow Palace. A list of Ronnie Richards’ winners reads like the “Who’s Who” of the stock horse world. Over the years, a collection of great horses, like Scooter Reigh, Hackamore Stakes Champion Ebony Chex, and Cow Palace Champion Poppa Chex made their way through Richards’ program. He won the Santa Barbara Championship and Reserve title on Cheshire Chex and Moon Chex, the Bakersfield Cow Horse Classic on Lucky Mac, and the Cow Palace on King Jay Bar, with which he also won the Phoenix Stock Horse Championship. Mounted on other great horses like Who Knows and Speedy Cash, Ronnie was a formidable competitor in the Open “A” Stock Horse Division. He and Mo Chex won the Del Mar Hackamore Stakes. Marco Tivio, one of Ronnie’s favorite horses, won scores of a championship for Ronnie. Sold twice, he earned multiple awards for other riders, as well. Ronnie Richards also took both the championship and reserve for the First Pacific Coast Stock Horse Stakes to ever offer a $10,000 purse. The large open shows of the fifties, sixties, and seventies were not as specialized as contemporary shows and stock horses, trail, pleasure, hunters, jumpers, and halter horses were all shown at the same shows, all in events in which Ronnie competed.  The Del Mar Show was the site of some of Ronnie’s greatest triumphs. He won the Stock Horse Championship thirteen times and the Green Stock Horse Championship five years in a row, but more importantly, he met his future wife, Karin, there. The couple had two daughters, Susie and Laurie. A former NRCHA Board Member, Richards was named the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stock Horseman of the Year in 1997.

They talked with us about taking over Grand Nationals from Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee, the challenges of running the event, and their reflections on honoring the event's history for its 25th anniversary. We asked them how the Shag community respects their history, what it looks like when Shag evolves, and how West Coast Swing has influenced their dance. And we got a chance to ask them about what they hope Shag will adopt from West Coast Swing, as well as what they hope their own legacy will be. Mick Kolassa and Eric Hughes stop in to for COUCH KID NEWS to chat about the new acoustic album of Beatles tunes they are working on.  And Eric will also talk about his Go Fund Me Campaign for the next Eric Hughes Band Album.   Jeremiah Johnson takes his seat on The Couch to talk about his thrilling journey.  From St. Louis to Houston to St. Louis, over the last 17 years, Jeremiah has built his sound and it is displayed in full on Heart Attack. I’ll chat with Jeremiah about his time in Houston, coming to Memphis for the IBC, his documentary Ride The Blues and much more. Dylan Wicken and his band The Grand Nationals come at The Blues full force as any power trio would. The band has just released it’s sophomore effort, Hi Lo-Fi, and it is a long time coming for their many fans.  I’ll talk with Dylan about his path and the efforts behind the new album, released 6 years after his debut. Matthew Skoller has just released Blues Immigrant, and I will have a chance to learn about this talented musician. We’ll dig into his travels from NY to Chicago and getting to perform with legends such as Jimmy Rogers and Deitra Farr to name two. The new album is deeply entrenched in the notion of cultural appropriation and we’ll discuss that with Matthew.

Talking Motorcycles proudly presents another episode as a part of our AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Series.  David Aldana, 1999 Hall of Fame inductee, became famous early in his career for his "all or nothing" mentality as a professional motorcycle racer. He was a rookie expert in AMA Grand National competition in 1970. He went on to place 3rd in the Championship winning three Grand Nationals along the way. In total, David won 4 Grand Nationals in his flat track career. He competed in nearly every form of motorcycle racing including motocross and road racing. During his road racing career he was a factory rider for Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda. In 1981 he teamed up with Mike Baldwin to win the SUZUKA 8 HourEndurance Race in front of 10's of thousands of fans. Suzuka was at that time, one of the most prestigious road races in the world and the one race everyone wanted to win. Known for his black leathers with the white skeleton outline in the front, Aldana was and continues to be a fan favorite world wide. Brian Slark, 2012 Hall of Fame inductee, was one of the people who gets credit for the creation of motocross in America. He was at one time the importer of the Rickman Metisse. Brian assisted Hall of Famer, Dave Mungenast in the creation of a vintage motorcycle museum in St. Louis. He then helped create the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Leeds, Alabama. Today Barber is considered the premier vintage motorcycle museum in the world and Brian oversees the restoration work in their shop as Technical Director. If you have a Clymer Service Manual published from 1971 through 1984, the teardown work was likely performed by Brian Slark. Both of the legendary men will be on hand at the 16th annual Riding Into History event this weekend!

This week we welcome Mr. Regular and The Roman from Regular Car Reviews if you don't know them yet you should; we find them absolutely hilarious. This week we cover morning zoos, Nissan Stanzas, Wilford Brimley, La Forzas, Dodge Rams, bukkake, Grand Nationals and generally dive into the depths of utter depravity.  On a markedly more somber note we address the untimely passing of Roger Rodas and Paul Walker whom we knew to varying degrees but unanimously respected. If ever there were a time to dedicate an episode in memorandom it is most definitely now.
