Shoot us a Text.Episode #1048: Today we're diving into Honda's EV strategy rethink and dealer drama in California, a mid-May dip in wholesale used vehicle prices, and the growing reality that side hustles aren't just extra—they're essential.Honda is pumping the brakes on its aggressive EV strategy, cutting EV R&D investment by 30% and slashing its 2030 EV sales forecast by more than 1 million vehicles. Instead, hybrids are back in the spotlight.Honda now expects just 700,000 to 750,000 EVs sold in 2030, down from 2 million.EV R&D cut from ¥10T ($69B) to ¥7T ($48B); with 13 next-gen hybrid models to debut starting 2027 with improved fuel economy and cost.“It has become increasingly clear that the environmental regulations... are becoming relaxed. I think the EV penetration period will be pushed back by about 5-6 years.” said CEO Toshihiro Mibe.Meanwhile, California's dealer association has issued a cease and desist letter to Sony Honda Mobility, challenging their direct-to-consumer sales strategy for the Afeela 1 EV.American Honda claims no role in Sony Honda Mobility's sales plans.Wholesale used-vehicle prices dipped in the first half of May, giving back some of April's unusually strong gains. The market shows signs of normalization, even as demand for used vehicles remains steady. The Manheim Index fell to 205.9, down 1.1% from April but still up 4.4% YoY.Three-year-old vehicles depreciated less than average, down just 0.6%.Luxury and SUV segments led YoY gains; compact cars were the only group to decline.EVs rose 2.0% YoY but saw a 2.0% drop vs April, steeper than non-EVs.“As the tariff situation evolves and the frenzy of buying activity for new vehicles calms down, we expect wholesale pricing trends to remain more normal through Q2,” said Cox Automotive's Jeremy Robb.Side hustles aren't just a way to save for that vacation anymore—they're becoming an economic necessity for many Americans. With living costs rising and economic uncertainty looming, millions are turning to extra work just to stay afloat.44% of Americans now report having a side hustle; 43% of them rely on it to pay for basic living expenses.Bankrate data shows 71% earn under $500/month, with only 9% making over $2,000.Top gigs include web design, video editing, ride-hailing, delivery driving, and even voiceover work. Some are using side gigs to build AI-proof income streams in trades, tutoring, or specialized services.NetCredit reports AI-based gigs on Fiverr average $44.50/day—low but growing fast.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Sales at most major automakers increased in October, driven in part by an increase in EV sales. Overall sales increased for American Honda, Ford Motor Co., Hyundai Motor America, Mazda North America and Subaru of America in October. Volvo, however, saw U.S. sales fall 17% year over year to 9,360 vehicles. American Honda's EV sales rose 31.1% YoY in October. Also last week, Lucid Motors posted an increase in third-quarter deliveries while production disruptions led to delivery and revenue declines for Rivian Automotive. In Powersports, Octane Lending closed a $326 million issuance in the asset-backed securitization (ABS) market on Nov. 7 as the company preps for further growth. Last week's transaction follows Octane's $365 million ABS issuance on July 11 and aligns with the New York-based lender's goal of one ABS transaction every quarter, depending on market conditions. In this episode of the “Weekly Wrap,” Auto Finance News Associate Editors Ashley Savage and James Van Bramer discuss key takeaways from third-quarter lender and retailer earnings and the latest news on auto lease ABS issuance volume. It's a beautiful new week as we delve into the U.S. auto market's resilience amidst pricing pressures. We also talk about the stabilization of wholesale vehicle prices, and German rental car company Sixt's strategic shift away from Tesla to BYD for its rental fleet.Show Notes with links:U.S. auto sales in November rose by about 9%, with significant gains for brands like American Honda, Volvo, and Toyota, amidst ongoing inventory rebuilds. However, analysts caution about the market's future, noting potential impacts of pricing and interest rates, especially as fleet sales decline and car share reaches near-record lows."We're going to run a 15.5 SAAR this year, which is pretty freaking healthy... But going into '24, there's no question we're going to have to be more aggressive on our incentive spending to work on that affordability issue." - Andrew Gilleland, Senior VP, Toyota Motor North America.Affordability concerns loom, with expectations of more aggressive incentive spending in 2024 as automakers adapt to shifting market conditions and consumer preferences. The YoY growth: American Honda: +33%, Volvo: +26% Toyota Motor North America: +17% Hyundai: +11% Kia: +3%Ford Motor Co. was the only reporting automaker whose sales declined in November, falling by 0.4%.After a wild 2023, there may be hope for smoother sailing in 2024 according to some analysts, as the industry adjusts to post-strike market conditions.Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index reports a 2.1% month-over-month and 5.8% year-over-year decline in wholesale values, suggesting a move towards stability.Cox Automotive senior manager of economic and industry insights Chris Frey noted they predict a 4% year-over-year decline by December 2023, and foresee less volatility in 2024.Significant price drops observed in various vehicle categories, including compact cars (-11.3%) and luxury vehicles (-6.3%), as the market adjusts post-UAW strike.Black Book's Used Vehicle Retention Index also shows a decline, reflecting a correction phase in the used vehicle market, with improved auction conversion rates.Major German rental car company, Sixt, is saying goodbye to its Tesla fleet, citing high repair costs and plunging residual values, while shifting focus to more sustainable and cost-effective options.Sixt, announces plans to phase out Tesla EVs from its fleet, deeply impacted by Tesla's price cuts and resulting depreciation.Unlike Hertz, which is cautiously stepping back from EVs, Sixt is keen on expanding its electric fleet, aiming for 90% electric vehicles by decade's end.The company is pivoting to Chinese EVs from BYD, citing lower costs and easier repairs, with a commitment to purchase 100,000 BYD electric cars.Sixt was the first rental car company to ever partner with BYDHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
Carl Pulley is our guest to discuss the new American Honda Collection Hall in California. He plans to stay with us for about a half hour. After that, we plan to discuss the updated Porsche Panamera and a short-wheelbase Toyota Land Cruiser. Plus, there's a cool video of a transparent engine.
Honda has just pulled the wraps off its first dedicated battery-electric crossover SUV, and we'll have all the details about it. Our special guest this week is Jonathan Rivers, who is manager of product information at American Honda. Host Jack Nerad had the chance to sit with him for a behind-the-scenes briefing at a secret location in Southern California. Honda is basing its first all-electric SUV on a General Motors platform the Prologue shares with the upcoming Chevrolet Blazer EV. But the Prologue presents itself as a Honda through and through. A long look at a pre-production version of the crossover makes it clear that Honda designers and engineers worked hard to make it their own. The 2024 Prologue will offer the choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive. The single-motor EX and Touring trims will be front-drive, while the dual-motor EX, Touring, and Elite models are all-wheel-drive. The two-motor all-wheel-drive models will deliver 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. Honda hasn't revealed the horsepower and torque ratings of the front-drive models. All Prologues will be fitted with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will offer up to 300 miles on a charge. Using GM's Ultium batteries, the Prologue can use DC fast charging at rates up to 155 kW. Honda hasn't announced charge times but it says the Prologue's battery pack can add 65 miles of range in about 10 minutes using a DC fast charger. The interior is pure Honda, including the brand's newest Google-based infotainment system. Two hot but affordable sports models take center stage in our road test segment. Co-Host Chris Teague puts the 2024 Acura Integra Type S through its paces in the challenging conditions of rural Maine. Host Jack Nerad did the same with the Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Premium Edition in the urban jungle of Southern California. In this week's news, the fuel economy rules proposed by the Biden Administration could add $3,000 to the price of the average car by 2032, according to information just released by a growing list of carmakers fighting against the new rules. We'll have the details along with our take on the situation. About half of electric vehicle owners say they will buy a particular type of vehicle the next time they buy one. Their answers could surprise you. We'll tell you what they plan to buy in this episode. Here's another good question we'll talk about this week: Do self-driving cars pose a danger to pedestrians? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration seems to think so, and we'll tell you more about their recent investigations. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

This week on our motorcycle podcast we are talking about cooking food. With our bikes. No, really. Our moto is Live to Ride, Ride to Eat, so what better way to do this than to cook the food while you ride. We've come up with a list of bikes and dishes that we think are good matches. are you willing to try any? Next up we are joined by champion racer Bubba Shobert. He's a three-time A.M.A. Grand National Champion from 1985 to 1987 and was AMA Superbike Champion in 1988 while riding for American Honda. In 1989 Shobert moved up to the Grand Prix world championship riding for Honda. Unfortunately, Shobert's Grand Prix career was cut short at the third race of the season, where he was involved in a terrible crash with Kevin Magee on the cool off lap after the race, wherein Shobert drove into the back of Magee's motorcycle. Magee had stopped his motorcycle in the middle of the track and was performing a rear-wheel "burnout". Eddie Lawson narrowly missed hitting Magee's bike after he and Shobert had just finished congratulating each other moments earlier and were not looking forward. Shobert suffered severe head injuries but was able to make a full recovery after months of rehabilitation. He never raced again, taking instead roles as manager in some teams of AMA Grand National dirt track . With Liza, Stumpy John, Miss Emma and Bagel. Carter Myers Automotive has been around for 98 years, meaning they lived through the Spanish Flu of 1918.Liza Borches hasn't seen all of that, but as the 3rd generation President and CEO of CMA, she knows the stories of the company. She knows the joys and the pains. And she has led the organization through growth and culture shift, overcoming her own ideas about retail auto and even some misogyny from those in her organization. Michael Cirillo, Paul J Daly, and Kyle Mountsier ask her about an opportunity at General Mills, Honda's 3 Joys, and why groups are asking CMA to acquire them. What we talk about in this episode:0:00 Intro with Michael Cirillo, Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier.7:59 Coming out of college, Liza didn't want to work for the family business. She took a job with American Honda because it sounded like fun to live in Southern California. But that job showed her a whole new side of retail automotive.“I started really seeing the difference that those leaders and dealership associates were making in their communities, I saw a different side of the business than I had grown up with. I grew up just seeing my dad working 24/7 some challenging times with our business almost going under a lot of stress and to be honest, he just wasn't around. So I just needed to see a different perspective on the business. And then I got to come home and see it through the lens that my dad was able to share with me more as an adult than versus when I was a kid.”14:04 For Carter Myers Automotive, company culture is about influencing the whole person, not just that person at work.“Tom Doll shared at the Subaru meeting a couple of weeks ago, and he said, ''We don't just want to be good business people. We want to be good people in business.” And I think at CMA, that's something that we've always focused on. We don't want to just create and pour into and invest in our team to be good business people. We also want to help them be good people in business. And I think that reflects back to encouraging our team to bring their whole self to work, not just their work self, and how do we help them grow both personally and professionally, that it has to be investing in them as a human being and not just an as an a team member of CMA.”19:43 Liza's grandfather gave the company its fiscal responsibility, her father gave it an aggressive growth desire, and Liza herself brought the company its soul. She learned how to build a great culture at a single store and then began scaling it to the other stores in the group with the help of some amazing general managers.27:15 Michael Cirillo makes an observation that in some ways, the automotive industry is really one big family business. Liza adds to that by talking about the fear of failing in a family business, but how, if you aren't afraid to be yourself and bring your own ideas to the table, you can add a whole new perspective.⭐️ Love the podcast? The long awaited, probably forgotten, but much talked about Honda Gold Wing video podcast from the Brap Talk Motorcycle Podcast. Hey, it only took us two years to publish it! Of note, we talk a bit about the luggage situation on the 2018 Honda Gold Wing Tour, and thankfully since the release of this show, Honda has increased the luggage size of the top box and it now fits two helmets. Also, this is our first stab at a video podcast - God willing, our future attempts will be a little bit better and a little bit more timely. It was a learning experience. Thanks for watching! Big thanks to American Honda for letting us keep the Gold Wing Tour for way, way too long. Monday doesn't disappoint with fresh ideas and challenges to kick off the new week. Today we're talking about the future of MSRP and the Dealer's role in new car sales, Honda making moves in the CPO space, and consumer indicators in air travel are a sign of the times regarding employment. It's a good day to make some trouble. What will Dealers do when Invoice and MSRP are identical? Could it really happen? What could it mean for the Dealer and consumerHonda offering CPO warranty program for vehicles up to 100k milesThere are now 3 tiers of CPO in the “HondaTrue” programA market share and brand-loyalty play “ …53% of certified pre-owned customers are new to the brand and 42% later return to buy a new Honda vehicle, hopes this keeps them in the Honda family for years to come.”Lifetime mapping, “"We're trying to build a relationship that lasts a lifetime," Dan Rodriguez, who leads Auto Remarketing for American Honda, tells USA TODAY by phone. "We look at it as a way to bring (young buyers) in through Honda TrueUsed, graduate them to CPO, which is a little bit newer car, and then eventually, bring them to a new car."How does this give a pre owned edge over Carvana/Carmax sales? What will this do to aftermarket warranty sales?Airlines struggle to keep up with staffing and scheduling as the summer opens upJet Blue is reducing flights to keep up even after hiring over 3000 workers“In an effort to make sure it has enough flight attendants working, JetBlue is offering a $1,000 bonus to flight attendants who don't call out of work through May 31 and an extra $100 per trip for flight attendants who pick up open trips on days off, according to a memo to crew.”“Southwest raised starting wages to at least $17 an hour and no longer requires that most airport workers have a high-school diploma. Some 15% to 20% of new hires don't show up on their first day for some roles, said Greg Muccio, the airline's senior director of talent acquisition. “We were sort of shocked by it. We've just had to adjust,” he said.”“The operations staffing will be on a razor's edge,” said Tim Donohue, co-founder of Aerology, a startup that works to predict flight disruptions. “The razor's edge barely works when things go as scheduled.”Get the ASOTU Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/Listen to other episodes: https://www.asotu.com/media/podcastsRead the most recent Daily Push Back email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-emailShare positive dealer stories: https://www.asotu.com/positivity------------------------------------------------------------------ For all Things ASOTU Check out our Socials Website: https://www.asotu.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/asotu_ Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ASOTU FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/automotivestateoftheunion Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/automotivestateoftheunion/_created/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ ------------------------------------------------------------------

This episode of The Athlete Entrepreneur feature James WuJames Wu is an executive at Sirius XM Radio. Raised in the suburbs of LA. After an elbow injury ended his baseball career prematurely, he jumped into football full time. Although he was All-Conference, All Valley, All San Gabriel Valley Decades team, he received no scholarship offers out of high school. After a stint at the local Junior College, he received a number of non-scholarship offers from Ivy League schools but wanted to go somewhere where they paid his way. After his coach at Junior College made a call to the Defensive Coordinator at San Diego State University, he ended up enrolling as an undersized Defensive End where his dedication and work ethic made him a favorite amongst the coaches and earned the respect of his peers. After graduating with honors, he became a stockbroker and in a stroke of terrible timing, opened the doors to his financial services firm on Monday September 10, 2001.Several years later, he was brought on to run American Honda's licensing portfolio. He turned a $500K/yr business into a $10M/yr business. He negotiated a $100M/yr guaranteed licensing deal for Honda but Honda Japan stepped in a killed it. Frustrated with big company culture, he went to work at XM Radio pre-merger with Sirius but left to join a startup called Stitcher Radio. While running business development for Stitcher, he got Stitcher into 5M cars and is the reason why Stitcher is the native podcasting application for both AppleCarPlay and Android Automotive. He was recruited back to SXM in 2013 where he now serves as Vice President of Automotive Partnerships.

One of the best kept secrets in American Motorcycling is the World Endurance Championship that my guest for Episode 13 won in 1993. He was the first American to do so and he did it at a time when so few American's knew that there was a World Endurance series. In many respects for my guest, that might have been be the pinnacle of his racing success after learning his craft on the race tracks of America, but his career in motorcycling continued with American Honda and an opportunity to pass along his expertise to a new and different audience. Through his tenure with Honda, his successful racing career, and his time in the media with Cycle World, Doug Toland was able to live his dream, and occasionally wear a tie!

The pendulum slows.Today's Stage 4 of the 2021 Dakar Rally in Saudia Arabia has signaled the slow down of the massive pendulum swings affecting the top-20 racers in the Elite Motorcycle division. As the race tightens slowly, some racers are making strategic moves to align with the fastest contenders and really begin the race craft.Ricky Brabec on the Monster Energy Honda team seems to be taking the lead in strategic riding, holding back from top speed today to set himself up favorably for two challenging stages before the rest day. Meanwhile his teammate Joan Barreda has kept the throttle pinned, taking his 26th career stage win and blitzing minutes away from the field in today's timed section, averaging ~ 75 mph for over 200 miles of race course. We chat with Johnny Campbell and Kendall Norman inside the Brabec/Cornejo motorhome and get some insight into the new play from the American Honda rider. We also break down the next few stages and go over what happened on today's extremely fast course.Enjoy!

Ray Hoffman introduces Kara Trott. Kara Trott does very well by her clients and very well by her clients’ employees. She’s the Founder and CEO of Quantum Health, based in Columbus, Ohio. For companies like Hertz, Dillards, and American Honda, and hospital systems like Houston Methodist, Quantum offers a remarkably personalized approach to healthcare cost containment. It is personalized in the sense that when any of Quantum’s 700,000+ members encounters a medical problem, Quantum steps in almost immediately to help guide each patient through what it calls the healthcare journey, assisting and often intervening from that point on. While using its care coordinators — known inside the company as healthcare warriors — to simplify and clarify this journey for patients, Quantum delivers markedly lower healthcare costs for clients. Key Takeaways: [1:15] Kara notes the savings Quantum clients see in their first year, from 5% lower claim spending. For large companies, this can be hundreds of millions of dollars. Individuals receiving healthcare conserve more of their out-of-pocket costs. It’s a win-win. [1:41] Kara graduated from law school and worked for Bricker & Eckler, a prestigious Ohio law firm. Before law school, her undergraduate study was on politics and philosophy, particularly Marxist theory. She worked for a marketing, design, and research firm before going to law school. [2:48] Kara had come of age during the Cold War; she thought it would be interesting to study a different way to think and look at macroeconomic matters. It gave her entrepreneur father a fit. She learned a different view but is a firm believer in the free-market system and capitalism. [3:34] Kara’s ex-husband was one of the first Americans to go into Russia to work in 1992 as part of the USAID program after Russia opened up. He and his partners formed a food distribution system in Russia. He and Kara adopted a Russian boy. [4:17] Kara saw in the demise of the Soviet Union that ‘command and control’ is not an effective way to govern large groups of people. You’re always better off freeing the intellectual capacity of the people and empowering them with the freedom to decide. It may take generations for Russia to find the kind of spirit we have in the U.S. [5:24] For Kara, marketing research was finding interesting problems to study and identify solutions. Kara ran strategic projects to help companies understand what people actually do, versus what they say they do. This helps companies rethink their marketing. [6:06] Kara didn’t feel that retail marketing was where she could make the kind of difference she wanted to make so she went to Ohio State Law School and then joined Bricker. She was assigned to the healthcare practice, which was growing. They created a consulting subsidiary to advise provider organizations. [6:43] Kara became one of the leaders of Bricker’s consulting practice, in spite of not knowing much about healthcare at the time. She spent a lot of time with physicians and hospital administrators. Kara learned that patients are not often compliant with their doctor’s treatment plan. [7:44] It was clear to Kara that this was a classic consumer pathway problem that she had seen solved in many other industries. She imagined a strategy for healthcare that had worked well in other industries. It started with studying the consumer journey and how things unfold, then figuring out what the critical intercept points are. [8:25] In Kara’s retail experience, this approach had led to a 20-30% bump in market share, or same-store sales, when executed properly. She figured for healthcare, there would be an extraction of as much as 20% of the unnecessary costs. Based on what doctors and hospitals told her, there was a lot of duplication and waste in the system. [8:59] Kara proposed a two-year research study to track people as they entered the healthcare system for a variety of reasons. Eight healthcare systems were interested in participating. They were able to triangulate the consumer's journey through their interactions with the physicians and compare it to secondary data. [9:41] Kara’s intent was to see how the journey unfolded, what kind of support was needed at what point, and where you would house it. The firm didn’t see it leading to legal fees, so they opted out. Kara had to make a decision to put her livelihood at stake, split from the firm, and embark on a two-year study, before starting a company. [10:43] The survey was a behavioral mapping study. Kara compares it to a study she had done for KMart about which aisles people went through within the store on a visit. Consumers of healthcare reported back to Kara, just as they had about their retail trip. [11:22] Kara says no other company was looking at the problem from the consumer’s standpoint. Even today, she sees no one else studying the consumers’ experience. The healthcare industry doesn’t understand the consumer. [12:05] Kara says she can’t do a single job at Quantum. So, she started with five employees and within a year there were probably 10. She bankrolled that. Quantum now has close to 800 employees and will be adding a couple hundred more between August and November. [12:38] Quantum manages about $7 billion in claims and serves over 1 million people. [13:07] For the first year, because of payroll, Quantum was losing about $40,000 a month. That is the element of risk in starting a company with employees. [13:43] Quantum associates consider themselves as warriors for people going through one of the most difficult times of their life. People on a healthcare journey are seeking a safe place and if you open up that conversation, and you turn it over to them, you have no idea where that call or conversation is going to go. [14:18] Quantum associates need to be prepared to deliver immediate expertise. They have the expertise to be able to navigate between all the different parties. Normally, when somebody’s stuck there are multiple points of failure. Quantum takes those issues on so the person going through the healthcare journey can focus on the journey. [14:45] The Warrior Creed on the wall is a vital piece of the Quantum culture. [15:11] It takes intent to hard-wire brand values into a culture. There are three tests to take before interviewing for a job at Quantum: the Wonderlic test, a test of “what feeds and starves you?” (similar to DISC or Myers-Brigg), and an empathy test. Few are hired from call-centers or insurance companies. Most are from service occupations. [16:18] Quantum has translated the “I care” values into attributes and competencies that form the basis for leadership development and team development. 84% of Quantum managers and above are promoted from within. There is a strong leadership development program at Quantum Health. It’s very much a servant leader organization. [17:13] Quantum has developed their own technology system. The system necessary to see the journey longitudinally, mine the information, see what they needed to do right away and have the expertise available didn’t exist when Quantum Health started. It aggregates data from all different sources. It’s an open system that can pull in any data. [17:47] The biggest thing Quantum Health does differently is to mine data directly from the providers in real time when they’re seeing those patients. The system uses an expert routing approach that gets a healthcare expert on the phone to join a conversation. [18:37] Natural Language Processing mines data and creates a consistent record of everything in the person’s healthcare journey, providing a 360-degree view, to be able to identify and queue up opportunities and ways to assist them. [19:14] Quantum Health has been on the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing small companies 11 years in a row. Fewer than 50 companies have been on it for 10 years. They are experiencing 30 to 40% annual growth. [20:06] Quantum Health has just entered into a relationship with City of Hope to share the expertise of a few facilities with a nationwide network of doctors who don’t have access to that kind of front-line research. [20:36] Kara talks about changes happening in the field of behavioral health for substance abuse challenges and new methodologies for musculoskeletal care. Clients are ever seeking to make their benefits simpler for employees. Quantum makes sure the patient has a comprehensive solution. [21:42] Quantum Health is the leader in this space. Only a few carriers serve the market, but the market is huge. The clients Quantum Health carries cover over 60% of the people who receive healthcare benefits through employer-sponsored plans. [22:07] The industry is expected to grow dramatically over the next five years. It’s being noticed as a way to create a much better experience and really support people. Not only does it help people through their journeys but it produces a powerful economic result for the client and for the individuals. [22:36] Just an entrepreneur solving a problem. Kara Trott. Several agencies provide updated data that prove shifts in demography affect health systems. To know more about how demography changes our lives, demographer Kenneth Gronbach will explain all of the factors that influence the world population in this episode. Advertising Industry Kenneth Gronbach shares that before he got into demographics research, we were working in the advertising and marketing industry from 1979 to 1991. His most prominent client was selling American Honda motorcycles and represented 140 dealers from the tip of Maine, Pittsburg and Washington D.C. The motorcycles were shipped from Japan, and they were selling like hotcakes since 1986. When they stumbled on a sales problem in 1986, Kenneth Gronbach and his team decided to reduce the price of the motorcycles. They also developed scooters in an attempt to revive the market. But their efforts were futile. By 1992, the industry’s Japanese brands fell by 80% which left them clueless. Eventually, it led them to close dealerships. Discovering Demographics Kenneth Gronbach recalls that he first stumbled on the importance of demographics in 1996 when he was in his office reading a full-page editorial. That editorial indicted the whole Generation X by labeling them as slackers, lazy, and couch potatoes because they were allegedly not performing at the level of the Baby Boomers. Generation X are those people who were born between 1965 to 1984. A skeptic of the editorial, Kenneth Gronbach called his research department and asked them to research everything about Generation X. Generation X Revelation The report from Kenneth Gronbach’s research department was surprising. The research team said that apparently, Generation X would never perform at the level of the Baby Boomers. According to the report, Generation X was not lazy. There were just fewer babies born from 1965 to 1984 than there were in 1945 to 1964. Boomers are bouncing off to 80 million, and Generation X is only 69 million. “So I think we solved the issue with motorcycle sales. Because if Generation X is 11 to 12% smaller, a 25% reduction in the size of the population will wipe out any market,” said Kenneth Gronbach. Effects of Generation X Generation X made a significant impact in population. Kenneth Gronbach says they shut down maternity wards and hospitals because they weren’t needed. Research reports indicate that the Baby Boomers were producing way over 4 million babies a year while Generation X dropped to 3 million babies a year. As a result, they also closed 30% of the public schools. Kenneth Gronbach also said that Detroit did not figure out why they couldn’t sell the same number of highly profitable SUVs to this new Generation X. This is because nobody bothered to count them. “Adding on to the problem was that in 2008 when Baby Boomers were bumping up against retirement and had their entire retirement in their home equity,” said Kenneth Gronbach. “Baby Boomers decided it was time to get the equity out and move to Florida. And they did so in massive numbers.” Labor Problem Another important situation affected by the demographics shift is labor. Kenneth Gronbach says that Generation X is currently people aged 34 to 53 years old. It is a small generation. And because Generation X was missing 9 or 10 million people, just in time for the Baby Boomers to demand services, labor was in a jam. “Immigrants from Mexico came in and took a lot of the entry-level jobs. Without Latinos, we wouldn’t have enough babies now to sustain our country and culture,” said Kenneth Gronbach. He adds,”If you look at the lion’s share of the Latinos in the United States, we have a huge block that is currently 34 to 53 years old. And the ones that stayed were socio-economically advancing which is wonderful. Culturally, they are a perfect match for our country.” Apparently, in France, the indigenous folks did not produce enough children, so they didn’t have enough labor. On the contrary, in 2007, the United States broke the live birth record. It was first set in 1957 when there were 4.3 million Boomers. In 2007, it grew to 4,316,000 babies where 25% were Latinos. Diving Deep Once Kenneth Gronbach understood the power of demographics shift, he went into 21 years of research. He eventually got to meet Dr. Nicolas Eberstadt who got his degree from Harvard University and is the State Department Demographer. Upon comparing data, Kenneth Gronbach and Dr. Nicolas Eberstadt concluded that their findings are the same. Dr. Nicolas Eberstadt even commended Kenneth Gronbach’s research data because it combined demography and marketing, something the State Department wasn’t capable of doing. Crime Rate Kenneth Gronbach also revealed that women are less likely to commit crimes compared to men. He says crime is committed by men aged between 15 to 30 years old, who are currently considered Millenials. He also forecasts that the rate will continue to rise as years pass by. Millenial Problem “The population of Millenials is larger than the Boomers. Most of my demographics is Generation X,” said Kenneth Gronbach. “The old end are just starting households and marrying late. They couldn’t leave home early in life because they’re not welcomed into the labor force.” Kenneth Gronbach explains that 50% of Millenials coming out of college are unemployed. Boomers are not leaving the labor force because they couldn’t afford to. Things have indeed turned around. The Boomers are currently aged 54 to 73, and they are retiring a little bit late. Demographics And Health Kenneth Gronbach predicts that the health choices of Millenials will significantly impact the health industry. He says Millenials prefer cleaner food and are more inclined to GMO-free, and responsibly-sourced animal products. “They are going to shift. I speak to farmers all the time and tell them they have to deal with GMO issues because the market is going to force them to do that,” said Kenneth Gronbach. Silent Generation Between 1925 and 1944, we produced a generation called the Silent Generation. According to Kenneth Gronbach, there are only 50 million of them, and these are primarily Generation X’s parents. The Silent Generation followed the generation before them which was the G.I. Generation from 1905 to1924. The G.I. Generation was the generation that fought in World War 2. It was a massive generation of about 70 million and following them was a tiny generation. “So the needs and demands of the Silent Generation who were born from 1925 to 1944 were small. Then come along the Boomers who demanded more service. Generation X on the other hand, needed more labor,” said Kenneth Gronbach. Distribution Problem Data shows we produce enough food to feed 14 billion people and we throw half of it away. So Kenneth Gronbach believes we don’t have a food problem but rather a distribution problem. It started when something happened in 1964. Half of the women in the world dropped below replacement level fertility which is 2.2 kids. And it never looked back. The rate of growth of our population is declining. “We will probably grow to 10 or 12 billion by 2050 or 2060. And then the population of the earth is going to begin to subside,” said Kenneth Gronbach. “But the problem is, the majority of the earth is market economies which rely on consumers.” Fertility Issues In the recent Heavy Metals Summit, we saw that a lot of factors are affected by the presence of heavy metals in the environment we live in and the lifestyle we have. So we also need to consider the outside effects on fertility when we talk of demographics. One of the external forces affecting fertility dramatically is that women are waiting to get pregnant. And the older you get, the hard it is to get pregnant. But that’s a challenge nowadays because both parents need to work. And the added stress contributes to fertility issues. Housing Problem Kenneth Gronbach says there are currently 330 million people in the US and 10 million of these are illegal. But demographers count illegals because they are in the country. Furthermore, Kenneth Gronbach shares that the number of housing units that are available in the U.S. is about 155 million. The two most substantial parts of our population are Baby Boomers numbering to 80 million and their kids, numbering 68 million. “A lot of people in their 20s are living at home because they are not welcome in the labor force. So they’re moving out, starting households and getting married takes longer. The problem is because a lot of Boomers are refusing to die and get old,” said Kenneth Gronbach. Currently, Kenneth Gronbach says we are 25 million housing units short of our needs. And the demand for housing is going to spike for the next few years. Kenneth Gronbach’s Books Demographics is such an exciting topic, and it will make you understand how population changes generation after generation. To those who would like to know more about demographics, Kenneth Gronbach has written several books that have proved to be an excellent resource. Kenneth Gronbach’s books include: Upside: Profiting from the Profound Demographic Shifts Ahead Decades of Differences: Making It Work The Age Curve: How To Profit from the Coming Demographic Storm Whether it be through his books or speaking engagements, Kenneth Gronbach says that the primary aim of his work is to educate, entertain and inspire people. Looking Ahead Looking ahead, Kenneth Gronbach says that compared to any generation in history, the Millenials are going to be infinitely more respectful of each other. He also forecasts that Houston, Texas will continue to attract Millenials because of the quality of life, cost of living and job opportunities. As far as commerce is concerned, he cites three categories where there is a significant possibility for growth: Healthcare – demand for better food Eldercare – going to be off the charts Deathcare- the need for more funeral homes and crematoriums “There will be a diversity of cultures in the future. The power of shifting demography changes commerce like medicine, food, and everything that we consume,” said Kenneth Gronbach. Bio Kenneth Gronbach is an internationally respected demographer who has been able to forecast societal, commercial, economic, cultural and political phenomena with uncanny accuracy. His unusual blend of marketing savvy and common sense demography, based on twenty years of proprietary demographic study, set him apart. A recall and a stop-sale order has been issued for the Honda Odyssey minivan for two separate issues by American Honda. The recall affects 641,302 vehicles built between Aug. 17, 2010 and Oct. 24, 2016. The majority of the recall, covering 633,753 minivans built between Aug. 17, 2010 and Oct. 1, 2015, involves a faulty seat mechanism. The 2016 Honda Odyssey has automatic sliding side doors. Image © James Raia/2016 In a statement, the automaker said one of the recalls involves a mechanism that “allows the outboard second row seats to tilt and slide forward for access to the third row seating area may not properly lock the seat into place when the seat is returned to its normal position,” which increases the risk of injury to passengers seated in the second row. The 2016 Honda Odyssey was selected on the 10th annual TheWeeklyDriver.com's best cars of the year list. The Honda Odyssey was also chosen on the end-of-the-year list by the website in 2012, 2013 and 2014. No crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of the issue, Honda reported. The issue was discovered through warranty claims. Dealerships will install additional brackets and springs to both second row outboard seats. Honda said that the necessary parts will not be available until spring 2017 because of the large volume of new parts needed. Honda will begin notifying affected Odyssey owners in mid-February and again when parts become available. The automaker said that until the repair has been made, owners should “slide the seat into the desired position and manually lock the seat into a fixed position by pushing down on the horizontal position adjustment bar.” Separately, a noncompliance recall was issued for certain 2016 Odysseys. It covers 7,549 Odysseys built between Sept. 23, 2016, and Oct. 24, 2016. In this recall, Honda said, the latch mechanism that allows the second-row center seat to slide forward and rearward “may not properly lock the seat into place when the seat adjustment handle is released, increasing the risk of injury to passengers seated in the second row.” The automaker will begin notifying affected Odyssey owners in late January.Honda dealerships will inspect the latch mechanism and adjust it to ensure proper operation, if needed, the automaker said. The issue was discovered during internal quality checks and no crashes or injuries have been reported because of it, Honda said. The Odyssey's U.S. sales fell 4.7 percent to 110,435 vehicles during the first 11 months of 2016. Is there a recall on Honda 2016 odyssey sliding door? The Honda Odyssey, a popular minivan choice for families, has been plagued by a series of recalls over the past decade. While this article highlights a significant recall affecting 641,302 Odyssey vehicles, subsequent developments have expanded the scope of concerns for owners. Initially, the recall focused on a faulty seat mechanism in the second-row outboard seats, potentially compromising passenger safety. However, as time progressed, attention shifted to a more persistent issue: the minivan's sliding doors. In August 2020, Honda announced a recall of over 324,000 Odyssey minivans from the 2018-2020 model years. The problem centered on the power sliding doors, where water infiltration into the outer door handle cables could lead to freezing in cold temperatures. This malfunction posed a significant risk, as it could cause the doors to open while the vehicle was in motion. This wasn't an isolated incident. In November 2018, Honda had already recalled more than 100,000 Odysseys from the 2018-2019 model years due to problems with rear latch assemblies on the power sliding doors. While the 2016 model year Odyssey hasn't been specifically targeted for sliding door recalls as of January 2025, owners should remain vigilant. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued multiple recalls for 2016 Odysseys, addressing issues with seats,

Fundamentals haven't changed But, in practice some things are different Command and Control doesn't work Access to information; glassdoor, etc. means people will know how your organization treat others Broader sense of what life is about Less about money and titles More about work/life balance and quality of life (Resource: Daniel Pink – Human Motivation) Starting to move away from traditional ways to do performance reviews, raises (but still a struggle) Important for job candidates to raise work/life balance issues during the hiring process if they are important to them You're not going to change the culture of the employer as a new employee (Resource: Scott Barlow – Happen To Your Career Podcast) Career = Carriage/Journey We have a lot of folks listening who, by title or job description, do not have leadership authority. They are early in their careers or the newest volunteer in a charity, etc. Can we lead and influence people and organizations from those roles, and if so, how? Retired Admiral Verne Clark, U.S. Navy – After a point in time in his leadership, he ceased giving orders – his leadership was via influence True leadership doesn't come from formal authority, but rather whether people are willing to follow you Favorite definition of leadership – people follow you! If they don't have a choice (i.e. in a boss/employee relationship) are they really following you? Political leaders great case study because we don't have to follow them Chris Voss (Resource: Never Split The Difference) If you can lead and influence in a volunteer capacity, imagine what you can do if you actually have some of the position and/or management authority Resource: Eight Ways To Influence Without Authority Resource: Coaching for Leaders Episode with John Kotter – Leadership v. Management Leadership is about direction; management is about execution One is not good and the other bad; they are distinct, complimentary and important skills I mentioned in the intro one reason you started Coaching for Leaders was a lack of content for those of us who weren't online entrepreneurs; why is that distinction important? What do we who aren't online entrepreneurs need to learn about leadership that is different? Leadership usually not top of mind for an online entrepreneur, especially one in startup phase when there may not even be a team yet Nobody really doing this! Senior people in small/medium size organizations are typical listeners, and there isn't much in the way of formal leadership training they offer Leadership can be very lonely; helpful to have resources What is a mastermind group and what does it look like? Peers get together with a facilitator Great relationships not bound by political issues within an organization Twice monthly online meeting where they talk though leadership challenges Used to just be for the wealthy, but now have become more mainstream and accessible with technology Need to be consistent, committed In a more recent episode, you discussed the topic of how to go about managing your former peers after being promoted. I think many in our audience are experience that or will very soon. What can you tell us about that difficult leadership task? First need to acknowledge it is a big transition! Sit down and have a conversation with your former peers who you now lead; ask how they feel about it and then LISTEN! Resource: The Look and Sound of Leadership (podcast; Tom Henschel) 20/60/20: 20% are excited for you; 60% not sure/don't care; 20% frustrated/animus (just assume this will be the case) Airplane analogy for the importance of diversifying your relationships – have a lot of engines on your plane, so when one goes down, the whole plane doesn't go down. If all your relationships are at work, and there is a big transition there, it's a lot to handle because ALL of your relationships were impacted. You are in the process of updating your tagline to Coaching for Leaders; the current one is Leaders Aren't Born, They're Made. Can you expand on that line how you came to believe that? Why did you decide to update the tag line and where is that headed? One of my mastermind members mentioned that the tag line was fine, but didn't connect to what the show delivered. So it will likely be more along the lines of actionable, expertise, access. You have created a wonderful bank of resources at your website coachingforleaders.com, including a list of your Top Ten Leadership books. Can you tell us about that list and maybe one or two specific books that we should start with if we are wanting to build a foundation of leadership knowledge? Seven Habits of Highly Effective People – Steven Covey The best way to be a great leader is to start leading yourself well How to Win Friends and Influence People – Dale Carnegie How to have great relationships, which results in leading well Focus on seeing things from the other person's perspective You have studied leadership, talked about it with other experts, trained others in it. If you were to write a book about leadership, what would its title be? The Listener's Guide to Coaching For Leaders – so people could go right to a particular episode/guest to learn about the topic or issue they are interested in or going through. Where can people go to learn more about you and how can they discover Coaching for Leaders? Coachingforleaders.com Thank Yous/Acknowledgements: Antioch Live/Clear Day Media Group – music More here. About Mike Bell: From the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame - "Mike "Too Tall" Bell was one of America’s leading motocross and Supercross racers of the late 1970s and early '80s. He rode for Yamaha during his entire pro career. His biggest claim to fame was winning the 1980 AMA Supercross Championship, but Bell proved very versatile throughout his seven-year professional career, winning a total of 20 AMA and Trans-AMA nationals. Bell was born in Los Angeles on August 8, 1957. His father, Bill, was an avid racer and well-known tuner who did development work for American Honda on its four-stroke desert racing machines during the late 1960s. Mike began riding at age 10 up in the mountains outside Los Angeles where his family had a cabin, but unlike many of his contemporaries who started much younger, Bell did not start racing until he was 14. Once he got on the track however, with a new Maico, it didn’t take long for Bell to go right to the top of the highly competitive Southern California motocross scene...." Read more here
We are powered by SOZO! David McGrath - AMA Pro Road Racing's former Senior Director of Competition joins us tonight for a revealing episode! Daytona Beach, FL (November 05, 2014) - David McGrath has a broad background in the sport of motorcycle road racing in America. Prior to coming on board with AMA Pro Racing as the road race director and later as the SeniorDirector of Competition, McGrath accomplished much. He was a rider/racer for a number of years before hanging up his leathers in 1999 and then used his experience to help others. He spent time at Vance and Hines as director of R & D, worked with Dunlop in tire development and also served eight years with American Honda in R & D development as well as Crew Chief. Coming on board at AMA Pro in 2010 just two weeks before the Daytona 200 was a big undertaking that ultimately led to him becoming the Senior Director of Competition. Now that AMA Pro Racing no longer sanctions road racing, McGrath, along with several other key staff, has been released from his position from the road racing side. McGrath will discuss the past, present and future of road racing in America from his unique vantage point.
