In this episode Olly sits down with John Fernandes, co-founder of Freeride Madeira. John takes us through the wild journey of turning a passion for trail building into a global MTB hotspot, hosting the Enduro World Series, Trans Madeira, and welcoming some of the biggest names in the sport. The lads discuss how Jacob Gibbins' iconic photos and Brendan Fairclough's first visit helped put Madeira on the map, the behind-the-scenes madness of shooting DEATHGRIP, and what it really takes to maintain over 200km of hand-built trails across the island. John also shares what it was like hosting the EWS, the brutal reality of trail building, why other companies aren't pulling their weight when it comes to maintaining the trail network, how Brandon Semenuk managed to end John's relationship! Finally John talks about what's next for Freeride Madeira, including new eMTB trails, jump lines, and the epic expansion of Trans Madeira to a whole new island. 00:09:00 Pourquoi as tu quitté la France? -----

For Aussie listeners AU.RESTRAP.COM. This week on Life in the Peloton we have a rider who really is one of a kind - possibly the first person to combine Enduro MTB racing and bike packing; Matthew Fairbrother. For those of you that don't know, as an 18 year-old Matt headed over to Europe to race in the Enduro World Series (now EDR), and ended up on an unplanned bike-packing adventure, riding between rounds as far apart as Scotland and Slovenia. Like a lot of people, I can remember hearing about Matt at the time - this crazy kid who was riding a massive Enduro MTB between races - and then still competing for results in a competition as difficult as Enduro, which (as I've learned) requires some amazing technical skills on the MTB. His adventures really caught on, and since then he has managed to travel the world with the support of the MTB community, making his a really incredible and unique journey with the bike. As I've gotten to know Matt, I thought it was the perfect time to dive in to his story and to understand how this concept of mixing bike-packing and Enduro MTB came to be, and, interestingly for me, what it was like to be totally alone with just a bike and a few dollars in Europe. For many of us roadies who think that travelling to Europe to race for a team is a lonely experience - you really have to check this pod out and hear how tough things can really be! Above all else Matt has a really cool outlook on life, and I've had such a great time learning from him, and of course having the chance to make this pod! Cheers! Mitch
Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Since retiring from the pro pelo, I've been itching to dip my toes into as many different cycling disciplines as possible. I raced on drop handlebars and skinny tyres for over a decade, now I want a heap of new challenges to tackle on the bike. I love getting out and exploring on my gravel bike, and I've tried my hand at some gravel races; but the bikes and bunch dynamics feel a little too similar to road racing sometimes. I want to get out of my comfort zone! Cross-country mountain biking was the natural next step. I started out by exploring my own backyard on the rowdy moto tracks in the Cobaws, then some races in Aussie events like Otway Odyssey, Reef to Reef, and Cape to Cape. Every time I got on the XC bike I felt like my skills were improving and I was growing more and more confident - the same feeling I had all those years ago when I first got into road cycling as a youngster. It was new, challenging, and I could feel the progression with every ride. My cross-country journey hit new heights at the end of last year as I took on the creme de la creme of XC MTB; the Cape Epic, alongside my good mate and fellow retired road racer, Ian Boswell. Despite completing one of the biggest mountain bike races on the planet, I still feel like there's more to explore in the world of flat handlebars, chunky tyres, and suspension. I want to keep working on my skills and pushing myself in areas other than pure fitness. That's why I'm diving headfirst into the world of Enduro. Enduro is the perfect next step on my mountain biking journey; there's some pedalling, sure, but it's more about technique, skill, and balls! In Enduro racing it's all about the downhill - only the descents are timed. Nobody gives a fuck how fast you can climb, you just need to get to the top so you can send the next trail. Riders race multiple stages throughout an event, and at the end the lowest cumulative time wins. I started by chatting to Paul Van Der Ploeg. A great bloke, and a fantastic mentor to show me the ropes and teach me the basics, Paul and I headed out to Mount Macedon so he could critique my technique and give me some pointers. Paul has raced all sorts of bikes over the years, and even became a world champion himself in the Cross Country Eliminator in 2013, but was humble enough to strip it all back and teach this newbie some basics. Next, I spoke to Matt Fairbrother. Only 20 years old and hailing from Christchurch in New Zealand, Matt is a ripping Enduro racer who made a name for himself by bikepacking his way between the races at the Enduro World Series - sometimes thousands of kilometres at a time! Matt and I had a chat on the road to the New Zealand MTB Rally; a brand new event that I'll be taking on to help me better understand the world of enduro. Despite being almost half my age, Matt's one of the most experienced riders out there and shared a lot of his wisdom with me on a road trip down the coast of the South Island from Christchurch to Nelson. When we arrived we had a couple of days to spare before the racing started, so Matt took me out to some of his favourite trails in Nelson City and Cable Bay to show me the race course so we could pre-ride, re-ride, and then free ride! We also spoke about the tech side of enduro. I've not got much clue when it comes to tyre selection or suspension settings - so I spoke to Paul and Matt about the bikes to get some pointers. I even learnt that my bike's got a mullet just like me! There's so much for me to learn about all things mountain biking, but I'm loving being a beginner again and soaking it all in! Have a listen to me talking to some real experts as I send it into the world of enduro. Cheers! Mitch

In this episode, we hear from Yoann Barelli. For those that aren't familiar, Yoann hails from Nice in the south of France and has been racing Mountain Bikes since the tender age of 7 years old. From there he went on to have numerous successes, including becoming the French Elite DH champion in 2004, and multiple podium finishes in the Enduro World Series after that. Over the past few years, we have seen Yoann pivot towards free riding, getting creative, and of course, having loads of fun! He shares this incredible passion and energy through his coaching Business, Into The Gnar, which he launched back in 2020 and has completely blown up from there! Yoann also curates a yearly free ride extravaganza in the Sea To Sky which sees some of the world's best Pro Riders and up and up-and-coming athletes test their limits on some of the most technical and high-consequence features in the area.In this inspiring conversation, we cover:New sponsors and new bikesHis mental process from start to finishHow to use humour to help boost your mental game. How to use breathwork in your ridingHow he assesses riskWhat he has learned since becoming a mtb coachHis specific Visualization strategyAnd so, so, much more. We rode the Double Black Green Monster trail in Whistler prior to recording this chat and it was epic to see his processes and decision-making in action - I highly recommend watching that video over on my YouTube channel @jakejohnstone. Matt Fairbrother is a young New Zealand born mountain biker with a sense of adventure. Arriving on the shores of the UK for the Innerleithen EWS and very few plans, Matthew ended up setting off on an adventure to ride between the rounds of the Enduro World Series last year. Matt tells us about bears, being attacked by a goose, unintentional single speed bike packing and plenty more. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Matt Fairbrother. New Zealand cyclist Matt Fairbrother made a splash in the 2022 Enduro World Series when, at age 17, he bikepacked 4,000 kilometers to get to the races. The journey started when he couldn't find transportation from the Scotland event to the next race in Slovenia. With only a few thousand dollars to cover his entire season, he decided to bikepack instead. Even as his enormous commute picked up media and sponsor attention, he decided not to accept offers for easier forms of transportation and continue bikepacking instead. His journey often required riding for 24 hours at a time with only a couple hours of sleep each night, all on a bike weighing over 70 pounds. In this conversation, Matt talks about why he decided not to bail on the season after finding himself stranded in Scotland, and what it was like to ride that first 1,500-kilometer push to Slovenia (his first ever bikepacking trip). He talks about the night when he was stuck in sub-freezing temperatures in the Alps without enough warm clothes to get him through to the morning, and the time he was held up at a ferry for being under 18. He also discusses his decision to continue bikepacking to his events in 2023, and the new sponsors that are along for the ride.Instagram: @theadventurestache
In preparation for the upcoming season of the Enduro World Series, Payson talks to the top three men of last year, Jesse Melamed, Richie Rude, and Martin Maes. They chat about how they got into Enduro, their favorite courses, and how they're feeling about all the changes being implemented this year. Martin talks about the success he's found in both downhill and Enduro. In 2018, he won an EWS race and then followed it up two weeks later with a win at the World Cup Downhill Finals in La Bresse, France. He talks about the rivalry between downhill and Enduro racers, and the EWS goal he wants to fulfill before going back to downhill racing. Richie was the first man to win back-to-back EWS championship titles in 2015 and 2016 at 21 years old and continues to be a mainstay on the podium. He talks about his busy off-season, gravel riding, and how he's changed as a racer since he burst onto the scene as a teenager. And we listen back to two of our interviews with Jesse, one directly after he won the 2022 overall title in which he discusses his victory, and one from February 2022 in which he talks about his love of training, camaraderie during races, and why heavy mileage is the key to his success. Join me for a chat with one of 2022's break-through riders, Jack Menzies. In his first season in elite, Jack piloted his WeAreOne Arrival to some incredible EWS results, with two top tens and a 4th place pro-stage finish. Hear about Jack's sporty upbringing and how he's been putting in the work to get the results he wants. We talk about the ups and downs of racing and the challenges of finding the right headspace when the clock is ticking. There's lots to learn from a rider who's definitely on the rise. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Jack Menzies. You can follow Jack on Instagram @jackmenzies__ or on the team page @polygonfactoryracing. In preparation for the upcoming season of the Enduro World Series, Payson talks to the top three women of last year, Isabeau Courdurier, Morgane Charre, and Hattie Harnden. They chat about how they got into Enduro, their favorite courses, and how they're feeling about all the changes being implemented this year. Hattie discusses her switch from dominanting cyclocross and XC as a junior to becoming the youngest rider to ever win an Enduro race. Morgane talks about how a broken wrist lured her away from her illustrious downhill career to Enduro racing, and why she still chooses to ride flat pedals despite the amount of pedaling EWS races require. And Isabeau talks about her deep love of the sport, how the death of her father changed her outlook on training, and the difference between results and performance. Instagram: @theadventurestache
Marcelo Gutierrez is the most successful Downhill Mountain Biker in Colombia. It was not an easy road out of Colombia onto the world stage. Marcelo managed to get multiple World Cup podiums and become the king of the most grueling downhill race known as Garbonza Downhill at the Crankworx festival. Winning at the highest level for Marcelo was not quite enough. He lost his passion for the sport and competiting knowing there was more to life. After 12 years on the circuit, he has chosen to step away and is building cycling and mountain biking in South America as an ambassador for brands. He still competes at some select events. It was a fascinating and thought-provoking episode. In the third installment of our series about pros in the off-season, Payson chats with two cyclists from different sides of the racing world: former WorldTour rider-turned-gravel racer Ruth Winder, and the 2022 EWS World Champion Jesse Melamed. Ruth talks about recuperating from a mentally grueling season. After retiring from the WorldTour, she decided to compete in the Lifetime Grand Prix last year but came up against some unexpected hurdles. She talks about the work she's done in the off-season to rediscover why she began riding her bike in the first place, and her newfound love of skiing. Jesse talks about the exhilaration of winning the Enduro World Series and wanting to jump straight back into training. But with a trip to Spain and some celebrating back home in Squamish, BC, he managed to take some time off before packing in the miles in Arizona and California. He talks about why Enduro racers put in so many hours on the road, and how he's prepared for moving teams this season. In episode 6, we talk with Amy Morrison, who lives in Carson City, NV. Growing up in the midwest and with two brothers, Amy has an interesting athletic background that ranges from barefoot skiing to collegiate pole vaulting. After graduating from Clemson University, she took a job in pharmaceutical sales that involved a lot of travel. Eventually she ended up in the NorCal and Northern Nevada Territory, bought a bike, and traveled to work meetings with a bike on the back of her vehicle. After her workday, she would get out on her bike and explore the area. In a roundabout way, this led to Enduro racing. Amy discovered she had a talent right away and found herself on the podium in her very first races. She started racing more seriously while also making a career change to become a high school teacher. Amy has now won two National Championships in the Women's Pro Enduro and raced at the highest level for Enduro, the Enduro World Series. In addition to teaching and racing, Amy started a NICA team at Dayton High School, a small high school in the Nevada League. She has worked to give kids the opportunity to discover the joy of mountain bikes while finding balance for herself in the teams laid back, lets-have-fun approach. GMM is funded by NICA National with support from Rapha Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, and Continental Tires. Also, the folks at The Gravel Lot, another wonderful podcast, have spent countless hours helping us! In this episode, I am joined by one of the top riders in the world, Jesse Melamed. Jesse is a professional enduro racer who is currently ranked third in the world based on his standings last year in the Enduro World Series, one of the important races in enduro riding. And in 2020, Jesse actually won the series. With all of that being said, in my opinion, he's one of the best riders on a trail bike period. I wanted to have Jesse on the podcast because he nerds out about off-bike and on-bike training as much as I do. He loves the whole process it takes to get to that end result, flawless riding and standing on the podium. Jesse chats through what he does in the off season for training, his strength training plan, his views on nutrition, and how to have your perfect enduro race stage. What we discuss: 12:00 - Taking time off from riding 16:00 - XC bike tires/geometry/brakes 21:00 - What training looks like as a top riding 28:00 - Comparing training plans to other riders 35:00 - Strength training 45:00 - Kettlebell training 58:00 - Habits for optimal health 1:00:00 - Nutrition 16:00 - How to race your fastest enduro line 25:00 - Rapid fire questions Don't forget to head over to RemedyCoffee.com and use DIALEDFAM (all caps) to get 15% off some killer coffee!

It features their brand new gravity-optimised Ultread sole that combines the rubber compound and the sole design to create the perfect balance of grip and durability. I've been using the shoe for the past few weeks, so I can't really comment on durability yet although there is no evidence of any damage from the pedal pins after the first few rides. What I can comment on is the grip. For me, they've got the balance right, I feel totally connected to the bike and I'm not worried about my foot slipping on the pedals, but I don't feel so locked in that I can't make minor adjustments to my foot position on the pedal. The new GR9 is available now from your local Shimano dealer and you can check it out at mtb.shimano.com. WeAreOne Composites I've been using WeAreOne wheels for nearly 4 years now and I'm a massive fan. I'm currently running a Faction 29er up front and a Union 27.5 in the rear and I love them. We sat down with Anna Newkirk to catch-up at the end of an eventful 2021. After finishing school late in the spring, Anna completed a busy racing calendar and we cover some of the highs, lows and key takeaways of her first season as an almost full-time athlete. It was also interesting to hear her perspective on some of the peculiarities of the '21 season, such as the double header format in World Cup downhills as well as the Enduro World Series. We have received quite a few questions ahead of our sit-down through our socials and we sprinkled those into our conversation wherever they fit in. Of course, we did take the time to go through some of the more light-hearted inputs we received as well as the great story of the most recent addition to the Newkirk household, Anna's cat Mačka. Have a listen to our first episode with Anna from earlier this year if you have missed it so far. It's a good one! We sat down with Remy Allemann and Gian-Luca Hurni after the first round of the Swiss Enduro Series to talk about the maiden race in Lenzerheide, launching a new race series in Switzerland and their plans for the future of Swiss Enduro racing. We talk through some of the highlights and mishaps of the first race as well as the main takeaways for the next rounds of the series. Together with our former guest Nik Wicki, Remy and Gian-Luca also form the team behind the recent Swiss rounds of the Enduro World Series in Zermatt in 2019 and 2020 and Crans Montana in 2021 and it was interesting to hear their perspectives on the differences between organising the new local series and hosting an EWS. Of course, the development paths from a local series like the SES to the EWS is an important part of our conversation and we discuss the different measures the team has put in place to make the sport more accessible for racers of all ages. Good examples are the "chaperoned" U15 category, as well as the U17 category to go along with the more common U21, Elite and Open categories. We also cover the importance of volunteers, sponsorship and finding the right partners and wrap up the conversation with Remy and Gian-Luca's favourite riding spots. My guest today is Sasha Dingle, founder and lead meditation teacher of the Mountain Mind Project. She's also a former faculty member at the Goleman Emotional Intelligence Coaching and Training Program and competitor on the mountain biking Enduro World Series and skiing Freeride World Tour. Sasha's vision is to make training the mind as common as training the body.We talked about: how to not hide from your mind, that mindfulness is really about learning to drop back into our bodies, and when you don't know where you belong, keep breaking trails till you find the place where you can really be yourself. We sat down with Nik Wicki to talk a little bit more about Zermatt, hosting an Enduro World Series event and how to design a course that is not only fun to ride and race, but also safe for everyone, from elite racers, spectators as well as the numerous volunteers. As the Race Director and Course Designer for Traillove Zermatt, Nik not only has a interesting perspective on how the race in 2020 went down, but also some very interesting insights into the risk management of an event held in the alpine, how to adapt to and overcome challenges along the way, and how to select suitable trails for top-level Enduro racing. We also get into Nik's personal preferences when it comes to riding and racing, his favourite spots in Switzerland and, of course, how his skiing fits into all of this. Unfortunately, we didn't point out enough during the recording how incredibly important all the volunteers are for an event like Traillove, especially during a year like like last year and conditions as they were in Zermatt. Big thank you from Nik, Pascal as a racer and Bryson as a spectator from afar! The Enduro World Series in Zermatt in 2020 has been a topic on a number of episodes. Make sure you have a listen to our conversation with Anna Newkirk to find out how her race went and what she learned in Zermatt for the equally as challenging World Championships in Leogang. We also sat down with Jan Cadosch and Dario Lohner. They travelled to Zermatt to watch the pros but also managed to take the Pinkbike Photo of the Year after the race. She's regularly in the top 5 at Enduro World Series mountain bike races, and has a passion for mass-start events like the Megavalanche. She chats about how she made the transition from ski racing as a kid to cross-country mountain bike racing, then on to enduro, what it is she loves about this race format and her all-time favourite EWS venues. Spoiler: it's not just about having great riding! Ines also shares her cycling and pregnancy adventures, her new-found love of eMTB and what her plans for 2021 are.
We sat down with Anna Newkirk to talk about her career so far, her preparation for the coming season of racing downhill and enduro at the highest level of the sport as well as her goals for the future. With a World Cup win and medals at World Championships to her name as a junior, Anna is looking to make her mark as an elite in '21 and beyond. Her main focus lies on the downhill, but don't be surprised to see her at selected Enduro World Series events and, of course, Crankworx. We cover a lot of ground in our conversation with Anna, from her growing up racing BMX in the US, to moving to Switzerland, chasing her older brother, school, training for downhill and Enduro, and of course, the marquee events in 2020, EWS Zermatt and the World Championship in Leogang. Anna also shares her perspective on overcoming obstacles and fear, women in the sport and her take on inspiring the next generation of riders and racers. Unfortunately, we found some quality issues post recording. We have cleaned up the audio as much as we can, but some interference is still noticeable in places. Apologies for that.
