Do egg shortages mean it's time for you to get a backyard chook?

Have you been impacted by the recent egg shortages across Australia? The major supermarkets have been hit hard by limited supplies – and a new bird flu outbreak in Victoria this week has sparked a warning that those shortages could persist a while yet. This all comes as experts report a rise in the number of us choosing to own our own chickens – first reported during the pandemic, and more recently as people looked to take control of their food supply when supermarket shelves were often bare of a lot of essentials. Fresh research out of the University of Adelaide is shining a picture on how we view our backyard chickens, what it says about us and whether we need to step up our game when it comes to caring for them. Researcher Dr Emily Buddle joins Sacha Barbour Gatt on this episode of The Briefing to explain. One of my close mates and beer connoisseur, Ben, is a fellow Bestern Australian. He is also a product of the wheatbelt, so I thought it was about time he came on the show to talk about his people's shame in losing the "Emu Wars" to the mighty bush chooks. Ben and I discuss the term "Bush Chook," which refers to an emu and the beer "Emu Export." We also explore the beer's history, its reputation, and its association with Western Australia. Ben and I also delve into the cultural and historical context of emus in the wheat belt, including the military's unsuccessful attempt to control them in the infamous "Emu Wars". We talk about our experience with eating different bush foods and bush tucker, including bush chooks. The conversation shifts to language learning, with Ben sharing his struggles to learn Estonian, his wife's language. We touch on the challenges of learning languages with unique sounds and the importance of cultural pride in preserving languages. The episode concludes with a light-hearted discussion about Australian slang and beer preferences. Warning: This episode discusses workplace fatalities and complex injuriesSeason 06 Episode 01 is a special release extended episode, recorded live on stage at the Mechanical Engineering Safety Seminar 2024 sponsored by the New South Wales Resources Regulator (NSW MESS 2024).The WhyWork Podcast rabble rousers, Alan Girle, Trajce Cvetkovski, and Sara Pazell wrestle with the idea of good design strategy in mining. “Section 22,” prompts Alan, referring to the Australian Work Health and Safety Act sections 22, 23, 24, 25(4) – “…give adequate information, including any conditions necessary to ensure safe use of the plant.” Sara seeks statements from members of the audience in this live recording at the NSW Mechanical Engineering Safety Seminar 2024 on some recent design-related system failures in mining with mobile plant. The team debate these issues, including recent case law. Alan shares his ideas on the consequences of being placed under investigation. The team consider the sections of the law pertaining to design provisions and pit them against what is reasonable and practicable. Listen to Trajce get excited over his latest jurisprudential project on “proximate causation.” The podcasters discuss the risk of under-design in systems and the ‘over-design' in some technologies with plenty of bling that might not solve the intended problems. “Don't overcook the chook!” exclaims Trajce.“Is it fail safe or safe-to-fail design strategy?” asks Alan. The team explore these differences in philosophy, use cases, and design approaches. They consider a holistic approach to design thinking: the context; the environment; the task; the machinery; the operator; the work system; the job design; the management; the governance and regulations; and the people, pedestrians or other vehicle and plant operators, around the machinery that might act in unpredictable ways. Sara advises the team on her strategy to prompt this deep thinking in organisations when adopting new technologies or constructing new environments by asking three simple questions, “Is there a way?” “Can you play?” and “Can you stay?” She waxes lyrical about the enduring impact of good design and her passion to help organisations get this right if they want to achieve resilience, productivity, and sustain their desirable health and safety outcomes. This episode presents ideas on:Design thinking and design strategy in miningCase review on mining equipment and system designInvestigating design-related equipment and system flawsSystem design and resilience, closing the communication loop on design-related realities to cause ongoing improvementsNote:The WhyWhork Podcast sends a special shout out to Dr Martin Stirling of HILTI Australia for his useful explanations on being a “value engineer” and “co-operation”, Japanese style, in his conversations with Trajce. We've hit the road this week for Talk Birdie To Me, and we're coming live from The National Golf Club at beautiful Cape Schanck in Victoria.Nick and Mark are excited to discuss Hannah Green's fantastic performance at the weekend, where she scored birdies on the final 3 holes to win in Singapore. Brilliant. Birdie, birdie birdie! Nick and Mark both love what Hannah has achieved over the past couple of years, although Nick is annoyed with her because he feels she is now the best golfer to come out of Mount Lawley, knocking him off the perch.Big performance from Min Woo Lee in the US, scoring a big payday with his T2 finish in Palm Beach. Mark asks Nick to talk about what winning that kind of money does to your mindset at that level of golf. A big headline has been the return of Anthony Kim. Even though he had a tough day at the office, Mark was impressed with how he played given how long since he has played golf at this level. Nick doesn't love the fact Kim is with LIV, but sees it as a good short term move, perhaps less so long term. Nick and Mark discuss LIV, and the rumoured meeting last week. Mark again states his view that the big winner from the whole thing could be the DP World Tour, and this may be good news for Australia and New Zealand. Whilst we're talking LIV, listener Luke has a question about Rory McIllroy, so we get him (Luke not Rory) on the phone for a chat. We've had another great question, this time from Brian, about off the shelf shafts vs custom shafts. Nick and Mark are unsure about the benefit for Brian - so we call Matt Austin from PING who knows this stuff like the back of his hand.A fun Top 5 today from Mark on the Top 5 fast swings. Chook wears a lot of hats; he is a Cultural Practitioner, Ceremonial Leader, Direct Action Organizer, Father of 5 and traditional house builder to name a few. Currently he works at a local school “doing Indian thing's” as he puts it. He has helped plan a lot of the Western Klamath Restoration Project's (WKRP) latest project, Ikxariya Tuuyship. This will create and maintain the conditions to bring fire back to the world renewal ceremony at Katimin. This was stopped through violence and repression since the early 1900's.
