Happy 2025! The staff is back from their well-deserved break and they're ready to go! On this week's show... It's the end of an era, AnimeNEXT is on indefinite hiatus, and the AJS staff is tea-ready! Also, crowdfunding was launched for Mike McFarland's brain surgery, and Crunchyroll dropped a new manga app! Plus, Japan sets its inaugural music awards event, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment to release a Gundam tabletop miniature game, and the Godzilla card game will be simultaneously released in Japanese and English! Meanwhile in Japan, a bear breaks into a home to spend winter as a human, a monkey grabs a jogger and gives chase for hundreds of meters, a man is fired for going to the gym, and a collaboration of the glasses-wearing boys!

As we inch closer and closer out of the winter doldrums, we find more and more cases of rabid internet discourse popping up and it just makes us ask one thing: whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. We don't like talking about these things, but alas, it is our duty to discuss certain elements of discussion with these topics, namely the topic of what NOT to do when you're working on a major anime dub production (yes, THAT) as well as the unknown future of a post-Funimation world with that side of the service set to shut down and sunset on April 2nd. Not a very fun time, right now. But we can take solace in the fact that the five-year "LOLsuit" saga seems to finally be at an end, AnimEigo is under new and well-known ownership, and Crunchyroll has more than four Blu-ray releases set to come out in May for the first time in a while. See, it's not ALL bad, it's just sorta bad. But we'll all wade through the murky waters together, and our good friend Sketch is back to fill in for this treacherous journey. P.S. Evan chats with David while catching a Tentacool. David and Evan are back for a regularly scheduled Ani-Gamers Podcast to talk about Metal Gear Solid (both 4 and 5), Mob Psycho 100, and Space Patrol Luluco, but more importantly: the whole world has gone crazy for Pokémon Go and our hosts are no exception. Topics include: sakuga/cours sympathizers, real-life Team Rocket, and Studio Trigger performance art. Also featuring David’s nephew making a lot of noise in the background. I did my best to mask a lot of the background noise, but David’s audio is still a little wonky sometimes. Direct Download – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes Runtime: 1 hour, 9 minutes Show Notes Opening Song: “Blues Machine” by Scott Gratton Evan just got back from a bunch of conventions, including FanimeCon, A-Kon, AnimeNEXT, and Anime Expo, so he talks about some of them. David just finished Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Evan is currently playing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Both hosts are playing way too much Pokémon Go. Evan and David finished Space Patrol Luluco. They also discuss more projects from Studio TRIGGER, including Inferno Cop, Little Witch Academia, Sex & Violence with Machspeed, Kill la Kill, and Kiznaiver. Evan is watching Mob Psycho 100 in the summer anime season. Twitter: Ani-Gamers, Evan, David Evan hosts the Crunchycast podcast on Crunchyroll and writes for Otaku USA Magazine. Evan and David will be at Otakon in Baltimore in August. Ending Song: “Blues Machine” by Scott Gratton
David didn’t make it down to Atlantic City, NJ for AnimeNEXT last weekend, but Evan did get a chance to sit down with a living anime legend: Helen McCarthy, founder of Anime UK magazine and the author of the first (or first two, depending on who’s counting) English-language book(s) about anime. Included in the podcast is the full interview, in which Helen walks Evan through her early exposure to anime, the state of anime fandom when she first began writing about it, and the importance of preserving the artistic history of anime. Big thanks to Helen for taking the time to chat at a very busy convention! Direct Download – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes Runtime: 41 minutes Show Notes Opening Song: “Blues Machine” by Scott Gratton We start by talking about one of Helen’s panels, “The Last of the Giants,” about the early post-war manga/anime artists. Manga artist and anime director Osamu Tezuka is the biggest name mentioned, as he popularized a lot of what we now know as anime and manga. Rintaro is a director who worked with Tezuka and is still active. Evan briefly (and quietly) mentions director Osamu Dezaki as an example of someone who worked with Tezuka and recently passed away. Helen discusses how she first got interested in anime. The series that she watched when she was younger is called Marine Boy. Followed by the stories of Helen running the first anime-centric convention video room and first anime magazine in the UK. Helen name-drops a number of influential figures in UK anime fandom here, including Steve Kyte, Wil Overton, Peter Goll, and Jonathan Clements (who wrote Anime: A History and co-authored The Anime Encyclopedia with Helen). Evan asks what areas of knowledge are still lacking in modern anime fandom. Ben Ettinger from AniPages gets name-dropped. Yukiko Horiguchi is the Kyoto Animation animator Evan mentions. Our Song is the pop star-centric series Helen mentions. Twitter: Ani-Gamers, Evan, Helen Check out Helen’s blog, where you can also find information about her books as well as contact information. Evan hosts the Crunchycast podcast on Crunchyroll and writes for Otaku USA Magazine. Evan will be at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 4 weekend. Ending Song: “Blues Machine” by Scott Gratton
David and Evan are surprisingly topical this episode! Evan’s been playing the Overwatch Beta and Firewatch, David’s been playing Melty Blood, and they’ve both been watching Space Patrol Luluco. Topics include: a convention with nuclear reactor-level security policies, the Duck Hunt of Overwatch, a medical drama starring Mario characters, and the question of whether Ninja Slayer could slay the ninjas in Ninja Scroll. Direct Download – RSS Feed – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes Runtime: 1 hour, 5 minutes Opening Song: “Blues Machine” by Scott Gratton Anime Expo announced new security policies that require background checks for exhibitors, press, and vendors. I flew back East for AnimeNEXT this year, and I figured I’d mark the occasion with a now-rare treat: an actual podcast episode. Our guests include a bunch of super-cool folks you may recognize: Ani-Gamers’ own Ink, Anime News Network writer and prolific con panelist Mike Toole, longtime translator Neil Nadelman, and returning podcast guest Patrick from The Cockpit. Topics include: cool ’80s anime Future Police Urashiman, Studio TRIGGER guests, English-speaking Japanese animator Aya Suzuki, the inherent superiority of East Coast anime con panels, and “ancient” anime conventions from before the year 2010. We tried recording this using two different portable recorders, and I think it came out pretty listenable. Show notes and links after the break. Evan’s not flying back to New Jersey for AnimeNEXT, but he did attend FanimeCon 2014 in San Jose, CA. In this podcast, recorded on the fourth and final day of Fanime, Evan sits down with his Crunchyroll coworkers and arch-frenemies, Victoria Holden (a.k.a. SailorBee) and Danika Harrod (a.k.a. DarlingDaniChan) and cosplay photographer Ben Lam to talk about the con. Topics include Kill la Kill cosplay, Anime Hell, anime triathlons, and the “flipping off Evan” meme. This podcast was recorded in a hotel lobby, so the audio has a lot of background noise. Sorry! Show notes, links, and comments after the break. The “Flipping off Evan” meme is a thing that Danika started on Twitter for no good reason. Former Ani-Gamers blogger Elliot Page started a Tumblr compiling the best shots. Evan ran/participated in four panels: Introducing Studio Trigger (slightly updated version of the “‘Trigger’ Warning” Genericon panel), The Beautiful Backgrounds of Anime, The Changing Faces of Anime, and the Crunchyroll Industry Panel. Victoria/Danika’s cosplays: Elf/Sorceress (Dragon’s Crown), Utena/Maou (Revolutionary Girl Utena/Maoyu), Griffith/Guts (Berserk) Panels Evan went to: Takami Akai (Gainax char. designer) Q&A, Noir (Gainax marketing) Q&A, Anime & Manga for Parents (run by Gilles Poitras), Anime Hell (this one is from Ryan Gavigan), Most Hilarious Bootlegs (run by Heidi Kemps), and History of Sports Anime/Manga (run by Tom Langston) Kill la Kill was the most popular show for cosplay at Fanime. Watch it right now on Crunchyroll, Netflix, or Daisuki. We don’t have photos from the con up yet, but we’ll link them here once they’re online. Otaku USA Magazine: Evan and Ink wrote stuff for the new issue (cover is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). Evan wrote about Yuyushiki and Red Data Girl (that one was supposed to be in the last issue) and Ink wrote about Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They? It’s been far too long since we’ve put out a podcast, so here’s a little discussion of the drooleriffic 2012 anime series Mysterious Girlfriend X, featuring Ani-Gamers contributing editor Ink and our two buddies from across the pond, Phillip O’Connor (Ani-Gamers columnist) and former Ani-Gamer Elliot Page. I’m also there to do the intro/outro and ask a few questions, but seeing as I never watched the show, I mostly just listen this time. NOTE: The podcast has some mild spoilers for Mysterious Girlfriend X. If you’re in the area, remember to come out to AnimeNEXT 2013 this weekend in Somerset, NJ to see Ink and I (I’m running two panels: “The Beautiful Backgrounds of Anime” and “Panel Lightning Round”). Hosts: Evan "Vampt Vo" Minto, Karl "Uncle Yo" Custer, Ink Recording: A panel called "Fandom & Criticism: The Art of Active Viewing" at AnimeNEXT 2010 This episode isn't quite a typical Ani-Gamers Podcast episode, in that it's not a couple of geeks chatting on Skype about silly Japanese cartoons or video games. Instead, this is a recording of a panel that I ran with Uncle Yo and Ink at AnimeNEXT. The audio quality isn't great, so I apologize upfront for that. (And yes, Uncle Yo had to leave before the end without saying a word, which I forgot to mention in the podcast's foreword.) If you have any feedback regarding the episode, though, feel free to let us know in the comments or at our e-mail address we'd love to hear you chime in on this interesting subject!

What's this? An episode of the podcast that comes out less than three months after the last one? BLASPHEMY I say! This particular episode contains voice actor Greg Ayres' AnimeNEXT 2008 panel, "Fansubbing." It's all about the negative effect of fansubs on the American anime industry, and Greg really gets his point across well. Listen. You owe it to yourself. Also, I sat down next to Scott from AnimeAlmanac for the duration of the panel. He had just finished his interview with Ayres, which you can read about in the show links. Show notes (really really long this time) and supplementary links after the break.
