TVC 681.4: Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with Anne Serling and Jodi Serling, the daughters of Rod Serling, and Marc Scott Zicree, longtime television writer/producer and the author of The Twilight Zone Companion. Dec. 25, 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rod Serling, while the 2024-2025 television season marks the 65th anniversary of the premiere of The Twilight Zone on CBS. In this segment, Anne and Jodi share a few examples of the “many moments of helpless hilarity” that they often experienced while growing up with their dad; Marc talks about how Serling, like many good writers, “listened more than he talked”; while Anne and Jodi both discuss Serling's experience as a teacher at Ithaca College in New York, and how he often learned more from his students that they did from him. Both The Twilight Zone Companion and Anne's book, As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling, are available wherever books are sold.

Other topics this segment include thoughts on such notable Twilight Zone episodes as “Eye of the Beholder,” “Walking Distance,” and “On Thursday We Leave for Home.” Both The Twilight Zone Companion and Anne's book, As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling, are available wherever books are sold.

Anne's book, As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling, is an intimate portrait of the Emmy Award-winning writer/producer that is also a moving testament to the love between fathers and daughters, while The Twilight Zone Companion (now in its third edition) not only has influenced such TV show runners and filmmakers as J.J. Abrams, Vince Gilligan, Brannon Braga, Matthew Weiner, and Ron Moore, but created the genre of books that capture the history of popular television series. On this episode of “The Claw's Corner” Rich Cyr interviews Anne Serling and Mark Dawidziak. Anne Serling is an author and daughter of the legendary writer and producer Rod Serling. Mark Dawidziak is an author and "Twilight Zone" historian. Please visit both of their website for links on where to buy their books and social media accounts! https://anneserling.com/index.html http://www.markdawidziak.com/ About Anne Serling from her website: “I was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, but moved to Pacific Palisades in southern California when I was three. My dad had an office in the house, but then built one in the back yard so he could find some peace to write by getting away from my sister, me and our menagerie of dogs, cats and even two pet rats. Always preferring the East Coast, the change of seasons and the slower pace of small college towns, I remained in upstate New York to attend college. First Alfred University and then transferring to Elmira College where I earned a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in English. Upon graduation I substitute taught, worked at a school for children with special needs, and then was a preschool teacher at Cornell University's Early Childhood Program & Cooperative Nursery School. I have always loved writing. If my dad liked my writing he said so. Conversely, if not, he would declare it “interesting.” I wrote predominately poetry until I was published in The Twilight Zone, The Original Stories, an anthology, in which I adapted two of my father's teleplays, One for the Angels and The Changing of the Guard into short stories. The latter was subsequently published in The Twilight Zone Magazine. Additionally, I have had poetry published in The Cornell Daily Sun and Visions. I am represented by Erica Spellman-Silverman at Trident Media Group. Recently I started work on a novel and continue to promote my father's legacy as a Board Member of the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation.” About Mark Dauidziak from his website: Dawidziak was born in Huntington, New York, on September 7, 1956. October 24, 2022 - Something special this week for the season of pumpkins, ghosts, and Candy Corn: A YouTube feature on what Hollywood gets right and wrong about yesterday called History Author Showtime. It's a video breakdown of the 1975 movie, “The Legend of Lizzie Borden,” starring Elizabeth Montgomery, who you may remember as Samantha Stevens from “Bewitched.” I often ask authors what they think of the film or TV portrayals of the past, and for this week, I pulled some soundbites from Cara Robertson, who I interviewed about her book, “The Trial of Lizzie Borden.” “The Legend of Lizzie Borden” was her favorite portrayal of the tried-but-not-convicted alleged murderess. I've previously published Showtime breakdowns of AMC's “The Americans,” which featured former KGB agent Jack Barsky, who I interviewed about his book, “Deep Under Cover. My Secret Life & tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America.” I also covered “The Dummy,” a 1962 episode of The Twilight Zone. Anne Serling, author of “As I Knew Him: My Dad Rod Serling” had a surprising and amusing recollection of the infamous ventriloquist dummy used in show that I just felt deserved to be highlighted. Picture if you will, an autobiography of Rod Serling that covers everything a fan could possibly ask for. The very book I am speaking of is called Rod Serling: his life, work, and imagination. It was written by author and my personal friend, Nicholas Parisi. Besides his book( with a foreword by Anne Serling), we talk about his other artistic love of music, and performing in a band. We also talk about a very monumental midterm election coming up. Buy his book on Amazon now!
May 21, 2018 - In this episode, our time machine welcomes aboard the daughter of an American national treasure: Rod Serling. Best known for his ominous exposition in TV's groundbreaking anthology, The Twilight Zone, Serling also produced landmark screenplays such as Planet of the Apes, Seven Days in May, Playhouse 90's The Velvet Alley, and Requiem for a Heavyweight. He was a World War Two veteran, jokester, animal-lover, social commentator, prolific writer and -- unfortunately -- a heavy smoker, which contributed to his early death at only fifty years old in 1975. But perhaps the credit Rodman Edward "Rod" Serling could boast with the greatest pride, is that of loving father. This is the man we'll meet thanks to his younger daughter, Anne Serling, in As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling. Far from the dark, brooding, tortured character many have portrayed, this intimate portrait introduces us to a writer, thinker and teacher we would all be proud to know. Show Notes: The legacy of the famous T.V. series THE TWILIGHT ZONE, which first aired on CBS in 1959, has lived on for years, thanks in due to its creator, Rod Serling. The series focused on specific individuals who are thrown into strange and disturbing circumstances, & soon crossing over to The Twilight Zone. Serling would go on to write several episodes of the show as well as introduce each episode along with the show’s memorable theme. In 1994, the Walt Disney Company opened their latest thrill ride at Disney’s MGM Studios in Florida called The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. It was an immediate smash hit, resulting in a T.V. movie about the backstory behind the cursed hotel elevator. The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, Talk Radio for Fine Minds enters The Twilight Zone when Anne Serling, daughter of The Twilight Zone's creator, Rod Serling, visits The Halli Casser-Jayne Show.“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” Thus began one of the most iconic television shows of all time written by one of the giants of early television and beyond, Rod Serling. In the incomparable biography of her father, As I Knew Him, Anne Serling, Rod's youngest daughter, has written a brilliant send-up to her father that Robert Redford calls “a haunting and beautifully written memoir.” Tender, thoughtful, the book is as magical as the father she writes about, a lyrical, intimate tribute to Rod Serling's legacy as visionary, storyteller, and humanist, and a moving testament to the love between fathers and daughters. It is filled with surprises, proving that Serling was right: Everything is not as it seems. For more episodes of The Halli Casser-Jayne show, Talk Radio for Fine Minds visit http://bit.ly/U4EEMd.
