This one's been a long time coming. On this episode we discuss a cult classic among holiday specials: Will Vinton's 1987 Claymation Christmas Celebration! And to help us break it all down is special guest Gerry Davila, host of the Totally Rad Christmas podcast! Claymation Christmas has a certain reputation in the pantheon of holiday specials. You either love it for its handcrafted stop-motion and off kilter sense of humor, or you hate it for being a half hour barrage of dad jokes. (At least, that's how my own parents think of it.) Either way, if you lived through the 80s, chances are Claymation Christmas has a special place in your heart. So grab a frosty beverage and let's get a-wassailin'! Questions/Comments? On this episode of “The Claw's Corner” Rich Cyr interviews Anne Serling and Mark Dawidziak. Anne Serling is an author and daughter of the legendary writer and producer Rod Serling. Mark Dawidziak is an author and "Twilight Zone" historian. Please visit both of their website for links on where to buy their books and social media accounts! https://anneserling.com/index.html http://www.markdawidziak.com/ About Anne Serling from her website: “I was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, but moved to Pacific Palisades in southern California when I was three. My dad had an office in the house, but then built one in the back yard so he could find some peace to write by getting away from my sister, me and our menagerie of dogs, cats and even two pet rats. Always preferring the East Coast, the change of seasons and the slower pace of small college towns, I remained in upstate New York to attend college. First Alfred University and then transferring to Elmira College where I earned a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in English. Upon graduation I substitute taught, worked at a school for children with special needs, and then was a preschool teacher at Cornell University's Early Childhood Program & Cooperative Nursery School. I have always loved writing. If my dad liked my writing he said so. Conversely, if not, he would declare it “interesting.” I wrote predominately poetry until I was published in The Twilight Zone, The Original Stories, an anthology, in which I adapted two of my father's teleplays, One for the Angels and The Changing of the Guard into short stories. The latter was subsequently published in The Twilight Zone Magazine. Additionally, I have had poetry published in The Cornell Daily Sun and Visions. I am represented by Erica Spellman-Silverman at Trident Media Group. Recently I started work on a novel and continue to promote my father's legacy as a Board Member of the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation.” About Mark Dauidziak from his website: Dawidziak was born in Huntington, New York, on September 7, 1956. Tim and Jen start spooky season early with a shockingly dark release from Disney, Return to Oz.Jen forgot to mention that the main reason the film does not resembles the MGM film from 1939 apart from the Ruby Slippers™ is because all of the trappings of the MGM version were and are copyrighted. In fact, Disney had to shell out to use that plot device in the film. Hence, while Walter Murch's desire to make a moive closer in spirit to the L. Frank Baum material is admirable, it most likely played second fiddle to the demands of copyright law.Additionally, the movie finally made a profit from a 1949 re-release, not “like twenty years later” or whatever Jen glibly claimed.Animator Doug Aberle made a video where he talks about his process for animating the demise of the Nome King. Plus, he includes interviews with the late Will Vinton. If you want more details about the drama between Sarah Polley and Terry Gilliam, you can read an excerpt from her memoir here. Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon watched Men (Rent), Alex Garland's latest film. The Dragon liked the body horror elements but felt like the narrative was lacking. Next, she watched The Shining: Forwards and Backwards (Theaters). She enjoyed the experience but felt the first 10 minutes were jarring. Next, she watched Claydream (Theatres), a documentary about Will Vinton. She thought it was very interesting especially if you are into that kind of art. The Dragon went to Joe Bob corner and watched Nosferatu The Vampyre (Shudder), a remake of the silent film. She found it entertaining and enjoyed it overall. Finally, she started the show Players (Paramount +). She feels it is a clever e-sports satire of The Last Dance.   Berto on the Bed: Berto watched Guardians of The Galaxy (Disney+), and Guardians of The Galaxy Part 2 (Disney +). He thought they were both still very good, especially when paired together. Berto next watched Mother! (Prime). He thought it was great if you go in understanding that it's a retelling of the Bible, and the last 30 minutes are amazing to watch. Next, he watched The Bourne Supremacy (HBO). He found it to be a good spy action film. Berto also watched The Fugitive (HBO). He was reminded how great Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford are as actors, and thought the film was a good thriller. Next, Berto watched Last Shift (Prime), it was a passable supernatural horror film. Finally for Joe Bob Corner, Berto watched Mayhem (Shudder). He thought it was a great premise with a great 1st act, but found the rest of the film to be lackluster and boring.   Dragon at the Movies: This week's deep dive is the 1998 action film Blade, currently streaming on HBO Max.

Image Description: Princess Mombi holds a disembodied head before putting it on. The Princess Mombi scene in particular was the scariest for young Kim. It's available to watch on YouTube if you don't want to watch the entire movie (though, honestly, Julia thinks you should just watch the whole thing on Disney Plus).Geoffrey brings writer and director, Walter Murch, who has a primary background in sound design and video editing (for which he's won Oscars!) to the table as his most notable person, and Julia waxes ecstatic about foley again—it's like a repeat of The Land Before Time episode. This movie has a ton of satisfying sounds! We also mention Will Vinton, who did the claymation in this movie (previously seen in The Adventures of Mark Twain and California Raisins episodes), and Fairuza Balk, who turned in an AMAZING performance, and did all her own stunts! We also talk about the political allegory interpretation of the first Oz book, which turns out to date from 1990. Kim also brings up an early episode of the Lore podcast about mental institutions in the past. You know, in case you want to listen to something lighter.*Julia also mentioned that Tik-Tok sort of sounded like Box from Logan's Run. Grab your shovels, rock picks and brushes, because this episode we are headed to Dino Camp! Dinosaurs ruled the land in the Mesozoic Era, inhabiting every continent on earth. The secrets revealed by their fossils can enliven any journey, whether to one of our great science museums, or to one of the actual fossil dig sitesscattered across the US. Let's face it - many of us went through a dinosaur phase during childhood, and in this episode, we'll brush up on all the awe-inspiring reasons why that phase should never end.  We'll brush up on the progression of dinosaurs from small beasts filling an ecological niche after the "Great Dying" at the end of the Permian age, to the rich cast of characters you know and love from the late Cretaceous. After that, a quick detour to highlight fascinating aspects of dinosaur physiology and answer questions like - were they warm-blooded? Did they have feathers? What's their relationship to birds?  We'll finish out the episode by covering a top ten list of my favorite dinosaurs, and delve into the extinction event that led to the end of the Age of Dinosaurs. Along the way, we'll also cover loads of geology and highlight some of the best places in  the US you can go to indulge your inner Dino Nerd. This episode really can pair well with trips just about anywhere in the US. It is especially great if you are headed out on a trip and are thinking of visiting a dinosaur site such as Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado/Utah, Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in Utah, Two Medicine Dinosaur Center in Montana, or Dinosaur related state parks in Texas, Massachusetts and Connecticut. City trips should not be lost opportunities either, as you might want to brush up before visiting Chicago's Field Museum, or the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Knowledge Nugget: Radioisotope Dating Deep Dive: The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World by Stephen L. Welcome back to yet another week about animation! This week, we're continuing our look at Stop-Motion with a studio that stands on its own as a leader in claymation.  Since its founding in 2005, Laika has been making a name for itself among the animation elite. Though stop-motion is not the most popular or cost-effective form of animation, they continue to stun audiences with their technical mastery with each new film they produce.  Last week we talked about Will Vinton, the father of “Clay-mation.” This week we are picking up with the end of his story and the beginning of Laika. We will touch on each of their five movies, and what we “Laika” about them.  You can find show notes and sources https://www.blackcasediaries.com/ or https://blackcasediaries.wordpress.com/ Thanks for listening!

Buckle up, because we're taking a wild ride through Will Vinton's Claymation career, and learning all kinds of things about raisin advertising drama! We started in 1986, the first year the California Raisins appeared in a commercial. This led us to reminisce about Ocean Spray Cranberry World (East and West), and Kate mentioned some kind of memory related to Edaville in Carver, Massachusetts, but we utterly failed to get the whole story on that. Damn! Here's the Wikipedia entry on the California Raisin Advisory Board in case you want to read that bonkers history for yourself.Next we watched this Michael Jackson commercial. This article on the history of the California Raisins confirms that, yes, that really was Michael Jackson, by the way. And he did his part for free. This wasn't exactly a take on "Bad" as we say in the podcast. It's from the same era, but it's actually Michael Jackson covering the raisinified lyrics to "I Heard It Through the Grapevine".And yes, according to the Simpsons wiki, it was actually Michael Jackson in that one Simpsons episode, too. We also watched a commercial featuring construction workers. And one with one of the workers later at home. We also watched this commercial for Crispy M&Ms featuring Diedrich Bader. And then we watched some of Domino's Noid commercials. Starting with the first one. And this one from a couple years later…This somehow led to Julia and Geoffrey talking about getting Thrifty ice cream when they were kids, and discussing the distinctive shape of the scoops. While were looking for crispy orange m&m commercials (since Will Vinton made some of those, like the Diedrich Bader one), we accidentally watched a Holiday M&Ms commercial that was not claymation at all…What is UP with that list!? Where did she get infinite scroll paper? And another accidental M&M find: This German commercial from 2007 with CGI (not Claymation) Red and Yellow fighting in the ruins of a castle. Kate then caused us all to learn about the history of people thinking red M&Ms might give you cancer, which is pretty wild. And… of course we had to then look up M&Ms fanfiction. Because honestly, now. How could we not? Thanks again to Kate Hardly, who will really have to come back on and tell us about Edaville properly… Go check out all her stuff! This episode of the Animation Industry Podcast features master claymation animator Marc Spess who shares his encyclopedia knowledge on everything you need to know about sculpting clay for claymation. You will also learn: *Every answer to every question you ever had about clay - and even ones you didn’t think to ask (like heating up clay colours in a pot to mix them faster). *How to set up your layers and reduce glare for animating on glass *The pitfalls of making a career out of stop motion and Marc’s advice if you’re losing interest, or feel like giving up (like I did for nearly a decade). ~[Get 10% Off Stop Motion Supplies]~ This episode of the podcast is sponsored by AnimateClay.com, where you can get 10% off any of the stop motion Bend-D armatures, Bend-D rigs, or a copy of Stop Motion Pro Software by using code AIP. More about Marc Spess: I first discovered Marc’s work through the short film he was creating called Zombie Pirate Tales back in 2013 - and what immediately stood out to me was his incredibly detailed clay characters that are very reminiscent from the WIll Vinton era. He has an amazing talent for sculpting and he’s been able to make a career out. Since the 90’s, he’s worked on many claymation spots and commercials, life-sized celebrity replicas, horror film props, and so much more. Another thing about Marc is that he’s very active in this community and even runs a site completely dedicated to stop motion - there are tonnes of guides for beginners, a great forum to post your work and get feedback, and every week he hosts a live video podcast on YouTube where he discusses everything about stop motion - news, tutorials, feedback sessions and more. This week, at long last, the elves cover the [in(?)]famous and much beloved 1987 claymation classic, A Claymation Christmas Celebration! How does Will Vinton's clay version of London's Christmas Square compare to the stop-animation settings of Rankin/Bass? Can Rex, Herb, and the California Raisons even compare to Rudolph, Frosty, and the Miser Brothers? And, perhaps most importantly, is this another case where nostalgia plays a huge role when it comes to this special's final rankings? The amount of Christmas music discussed this is almost reason enough to tune into this rollicking, joyful, fun-filled episode! So settle in with your holiday beverage, and enjoy!  A Claymation Christmas Celebration website that we discuss in the episode, which features music and behind-the-scenes images and stories and was brought to our attention by listener Gerry Davilla. Day 21: We celebrate the 30th anniversary of the “Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special” the only way we know how: With lots of screaming, lots of fruitcake, and lots more screaming. On this episode Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), a completely ignored, dog-shaped chaise lounge no one ever sits on or talks about. Erin Evans (@mserinmevans), a talking iPad on wheels whose idea of a family reunion involves a small sacrifice of personal space. Lindy Kempe (@ieatvideogames), an anxious flying dinosaur from a place that existed long, long ago. Joey O. (@ImGonnaDJ24), an artificially intelligent pile of home appliances made even more useful when instigating loud chaos with a single word, from Y-Not Radio and Words with Nerds. Topics and Tangents Magic Johnson recorded his segment hours before playing in — and winning — a Lakers game. We don’t know the precise date, but one win was against the SuperSonics, possibly (but probably not) on Ice Cube’s “Good Day.” One commercial break includes a bizarre Pringles commercial starring a young Brad Pitt. Pee-wee’s Big Holiday on Netflix. When did fruitcake become a punchline? Christmas Past has something of an answer. Or is fruitcake is a byproduct of the Joys of Jell-O era? A mini ode to the Picture Phone, a giant, stationary Skype machine. The working script and storyboards for this special. Who mailed Grace Jones to the Reagan White House? Pee-wee performing “Surfin’ Bird” in “Back to the Beach.” The King of Cartoons’ cartoon: 1936’s “Christmas Comes But Once a Year.” My feelings about snow mirror this one, particular Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, published 5 days after this special aired. k.d. lang’s Twitter reply about her crazy, wonderful performance of “Jingle Bell Rock.” The awkward moment when we realize the Dinosaur Family has a pet dinosaur. Day 7: The California Raisins miss their bus, make a sleigh out of garbage and fly it into space in Will Vinton’s Claymation Christmas Celebration, the greatest holiday special out of all holiday specials hosted by clay dinosaurs. On This Episode Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), a singing goose carrying a basket of Easter Eggs on Christmas Eve for no reason. Erin Evans (@mserinmevans), who fortunately knows more about dinosaurs than Mike does. Joey O. (@ImGonnaDJ24), from Y-Not Radio and Words with Nerds. Emily Rowley (@mlerowley), a sentient church bell coexisting with other, nonliving church bells. Topics and Tangents WARNING: This episode inexplicably contains a major spoiler for the 2014 movie How to Train Your Dragon 2. RIP Will Vinton (1947–2018), the creator of (capital-C) Claymation who may or may not have inspired Leap Day William. Vinton also worked special effects on the Epcot attraction Captain EO starring Michael Jackson. Johnny Counterfit, the voice of Rex (and not at all Johnny Arcade), wrote a JFK time-travel novel. No, really. Rex and Herb’s original appearance in Dinosaur, which was later included in a direct-to-video thing starring Fred Savage. Related: “I Just Realized Why We Are All Mean,” by Jon Bois. Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Heaven, from The Adventures of Mark Twain, featuring Tim Conner (Herb) as a 3-headed alien in St. Peter’s place at the wrong “Heaven.” The California Raisins’ cancelled Nintendo game: The Grape Escape. Simpsons did it: The California Prunes. This special ends with a reference to the grossly enormous Mr. Creosote from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.
