Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Frank L. GoldwasserFormerly known in blues circles as “Paris Slim”, Franck L. Goldwasser was born and raised in Paris, France in the 1960's and studied fine arts before moving to Oakland, California in 1983. A self-taught guitarist and vocalist, Goldwasser began studying the recordings of Elmore James, B.B. King and T- Bone Walker at age 16. In 1978, Goldwasser's first public appearance finds him jamming with the renowned harmonica player Sugar Blue (of Rolling Stones' "Miss You" fame), then a Paris resident. Gaining experience while sitting-in with with visiting American bluesmen such as Luther Allison, George Smith, Jimmy Dawkins and Phillip Walker, Goldwasser lands his first professional gigs as backup guitarist for his idol Texas-bred California bluesman Sonny Rhodes in Paris and Reims. Following Rhodes' invitation to come to California, the Frenchman spends three months in Oakland and Los Angeles in 1981, meeting and jamming with Big Mama Thornton, Smokey Wilson, Lowell Fulson, Frankie Lee, Mark Naftalin, Buddy Ace, Troyce Key and J.J. Malone, Cool Papa and Mark Hummel, while documenting the West Coast blues scene for the French music magazine Soul Bag. Having moved permanently to the San Francisco Bay Area in June 1983 , Franck Goldwasser immerses himself in the then-vibrant East Bay blues scene, quickly landing a job in singer-guitarist Troyce Key's band. While gigging every weekend at the famed Eli Mile High club, he hones his skills working alongside West Coast blues titans Percy Mayfield, Lowell Fulson and Jimmy McCracklin, as well as Bay Area blues luminaries Omar “The Magnificient” Shariff (formerly Dave Alexander), Johnny Heartsman, Ron Thompson and Elvin Bishop.

Tis the season and who better to celebrate with than the Big Man! Good Jolly Ole St Nick! - This week, I sit down with THE Santa Claus! Ron Thompson, or Steel City Santa, has been bringing cheer to the boys and girls of Pittsburgh for three decades. You heard me! 30 years ago he pushed Santa off the roof, put on his suit, and BOOM! Now he's the Big Guy! All joking aside, Ron happened to fall into the role of Santa all by chance. When Ron isn't wearing the suit, he helps his significant other run the shop, Spotlight Costumes. They specialize in all sorts of costumes from theatrical to Santa Suits. Well, 30 years ago there was a word on the street that Gateway Clipper was looking for someone to take over the gig. The rest is history. Celebrating his 31st year as Father Christmas, Ron and I sit down for a great talk about his memories of Christmas growing up and all the memories he has from his years as Santa Claus. Ron Thompson is a mechanical engineer who has devoted considerable time working on this issue. He has designed, built and raced the Generation 4 (G4) recumbent bike. This work has encouraged him to conduct a scientific speed trial of 10 bike configurations both bent and upright to determine what can be learned about their inherent benefits and drawbacks. I was contacted by Jared Parseghian about his company Parbikes. They sell side-by-side recumbent tandem quadricycles. He invited my wife and me up to Toledo, Ohio for a look and a quick test ride on a beautiful autumn morning. We are veteran bent tandem riders but this was our first time pedaling right next to one another. Nina Paley was our guest at the LBR booth at Cycle-Con 2022. She took advantage by test riding everything she could get seat time on. Denny Voorhees grabbed a trike and our 360 camera to accompany her on Friday afternoon. Alien Worlds was a science fiction/adventure omnibus—an anthology with the same characters set in the same universe, as opposed to an anthology of completely unrelated stories. The series was independently created, produced, and directed by Lee Hansen from 1979 to 1980. He produced 30 episodes covering 19 individual plotlines. Episodes were in standard 30-minute format, but story arcs were as long as 90 minutes. It's the mid-21st century and the International Space Authority (ISA) is the body which governs space exploration and development. Alien Worlds follows the adventures of ISA staff as they encounter strange cosmic mysteries. Some episodes take place aboard Starlab, an orbiting space station, while other episodes take place throughout the galaxy. All of the episodes are full of action. The series was written by Lee Hansen and Ron Thompson, with various co-writers, including Ken Ross, Jim Cook, Skip Press, Dudley Brown, Mike Hodel, and Babylon 5 writer J. Michael Stracynski. The full-symphonic soundtrack was written by Jim Kirk and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
