Award-winning comic book-style illustrator and historian Arlen Schumer explores the specific Jewish creation of the American superhero and its antecedents in older, ancient myths—from Ben Grimm to the Golem—as well as the significant contributions Jews have made to the medium of comic book art itself.  One day in 1933, newspaper publisher Max Gaines (nee Ginzburg) came up with a novel idea: he took some pages of his tabloid-sized Sunday newspaper comics, folded them over twice, and stapled them on the side—creating the comic book as we know it! That same year, two 18-year-old aspiring newspaper cartoonists from Cleveland, writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, created a character whom they hoped to sell to the very newspaper syndicates who worked with Gaines: Superman! And the rest, as they say, is history! Thus began the history of comic books and super heroes,  largely created by American Jews like Gaines, Siegel and Shuster, for their innovations sparked a 20th Century American pop culture explosion that has only gained in prominence and stature here in the 21st Century!  In essence, American Jews not only created the original superheroes—they created the American comic book itself! In October 1959, Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone made its television debut, and for the next 5 years, over 156 episodes, would take us to places we had only imagined possible. Stories of time travel, supernatural revenge, murderous dolls, aliens amongst us, nuclear war and ghosts saw some of the biggest talent in acting, writing and directing appear on our screens. Serling took us on a journey that has seen the shows influence transcend the decades and despite the three attempts reboot the show (in the 1980's, 2002 and currently under Jordan Peele) the original show still remains unmatched. Joining me to discuss the pop culture phenomenon is artist, historian and lecturer, Arlen Schumer. Arlen has given numerous webinars and lectures covering his love of pop culture and released his own art book "Visions of the Twilight Zone". Arlen discusses his favourite episodes, the enduring legacy of the show and the themes that ran through the 5 seasons of this incredible show. Pop culture aficionado ARLEN SCHUMER makes his debut with us to examine the last 80 years of multiple art forms.   Arlen will discuss his comic book illustrations, how he accomplishes and presents them.  We will delve into the legacy of media heroes that emerged from the early '60s like Rod Serling and James Bond.  Arlen brought his artistic eye to analyzing many of the haunting images from "The Twilight Zone" and presented his insights in his book "Visions from The Twilight Zone."  Arlen will also expound upon the early career of Bruce Springsteen and his monumental 1978 concert at the Capitol Theatre. ARLEN SCHUMER, MFA creates award-winning comic book-styled illustrations for the advertising and editorial markets,  and is one of the foremost historians of comic book art—Comic Book Artist magazine named him "one of the more articulate and enthusiastic advocates of comic book art in America,” his coffeetable art book The Silver Age of Comic Book Art won the Independent Publishers Award for Best Popular Culture Book (http://www.silverageofcomicbookart.com), and ABC-TV's 2020 called him “one of the countryʼs preeminent authorities on comics and culture" after interviewing him (http://youtu.be/_e634FDTBaI). On this interview episode, Andy and Derek are pleased to have as their guest Arlen Schumer. His book, The Silver Age of Comic Book Art, has recently been released in a beautiful, new revised edition from Archway Publishing. It originally came out in 2003 as a softcover, with a hardbound companion that included an extra section, but in this revised edition Schumer includes all the material from the longer hardbound release, but with brighter images and cleaner type. The result is a unique visual experience, a text on comics art history in the form of a coffee table book. As the guys point out in their discussion, this is the kind of book that every comics aficionado will want to get, and the perfect gift for anyone unfamiliar with the medium but interested in the many forms of American art. The Two Guys kick off the conversation by asking Arlen how he defines the Silver Age, and he argues that while everyone can agree that it began in 1956 with the publication of Showcase #4, the era ended in 1970, a watershed year that inaugurated the way we read comics today. Then they get into the particulars of the book, Arlen's chapter-by-chapter visual study of legends Carmine Infantino, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Gil Kane, Joe Kubert, Gene Colan, Jim Steranko, and Neal Adams. They spend quite a bit of time discussing the work of Infantino, Colan, and Adams (one of Arlen's favorites), but the artist they spend the most time exploring is Gil Kane. In fact, on the topic of Kane's art -- specifically, the way he rendered punches -- Andy is able to flex his superhero acumen in ways he normally doesn't on the podcast. The guys also talk with Arlen about the creators he didn't have the room to explore in the book, many of whom receive some attention in the final "More Masters" chapter of the book: Murphy Anderson, Wally Wood, John Buscema, Nick Cardy, and Curt Swan. In many ways, this is a departure for The Comics Alternative, a podcast devoted to non-mainstream, non-superhero comics, but given the significance of this book as both a work of art and a necessary critical/historical text, the guys just had to have Schumer on their show.
