“People don't need a spreadsheet of reasons to trust you. They don't want another pitch deck. Another promise. Another polished lie. They are waiting for a signal. And what is the most powerful signal: "I see you. I hear you. You matter." Jack Barsky, a former KGB spy, did not learn this in Harvard Business School. He learned it from his tradecraft as a spy. In the Great Conversation, we navigate intention, truth, and trust between the two worlds. And we end with a question about legacy that many of us can learn from.
On Sunday, we were moved by Jack Barsky's powerful sermon, sharing his incredible journey from an atheist KGB spy to a devoted Christian. His testimony highlighted the transformative power of faith and God's unwavering love.Jack spoke about discovering unconditional love through his daughter, a reflection of Jesus' teachings, which sparked his spiritual awakening. Despite years of atheism, he was drawn to the Bible through a colleague's influence, finding truth and wisdom in its pages. His story underscored the importance of purpose through faith, guided by Psalm 46:10: "Be still and know that I am God."

"Russia's spies" has been a major news story for almost a decade now. They are here, in our computers, and on the ground. So what's it like to be one? Jack Barsky (not his original name) was a spy for the KGB at the height of the Cold War. He was a member of the elite Directorate S...the illegals. While training in Moscow, he learned how to act like an American, or so he thought. He figured it out though, and lived in the US, pretending to be American, for 15 years until the FBI put it all together. In this DEVIANT Off Script, host Dan Szematowicz sits down with Jack, now a US citizen, to get his incredible story. Many people have told their stories on Piers Morgan Uncensored, but none have had a story to tell quite like Jack Barsky. Born Albrecht Dittrich in East Germany in 1949, he became a Russian spy who defected to America and now has a lifetime of secrets and close calls sitting in his past. Today, Jack reveals how flattery drew him into the KGB, the missions he carried out against the west, and the morbid lies he told to keep the FBI, and his handlers, off his back. Now a naturalised American citizen, Jack is frequently called upon as an expert in soviet espionage, but overall enjoys his life at a slower pace. Russia may no longer consider him to be worth their time, but Piers Morgan certainly does. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

"My ambition didn't allow me to fail," said Jack Barsky, an ex-KGB spy who was a sleeper agent in the United States. Barsky was quite successful in avoiding detection. Until he was, then no amount of ambition would prevent authorities from moving in. He stayed around his smart spots for years, navigating North American culture to spy for the Soviet Union and his faith in communism. Barsky might argue that over time, he learned how corrupt and wretched communism was - and how he had been brainwashed to think the pursuit of Utopian socialism was the ideal course of action. Armed with high intelligence, Barsky figured out the need for his smart spots to change, so he changed his mind to become politically a modern-day conservative. We usually think of being smart around spots regarding achievement in business or some other pursuit. Barsky reminds us that being smart around spots can - and probably should be mostly focused - on our learning ability. To see things more clearly. To remedy our delusions. Too few of us are geniuses; even genius has a severe downside. Sometimes, we can be too smart to be wise. We may even become stupid in our genius. I'm thinking of serial killers like Ted Bundy, reputed to be high-IQ individuals who arrogantly thought they were smarter than law enforcement. But they were caught by mostly average intelligent people who stayed focused around their spots of expertise and training. With enough time and sufficient clues to follow, law enforcement often (thankfully) figures it out. As we've all heard about criminal behavior, criminals must remain lucky daily, while law enforcement often just needs one moment of luck to capture them. Thankfully, most of us aren't Soviet (or even American) spies. Or criminals. We're just ordinary Joes and Janes going about our everyday lives. I've realized that it may be an act of genius to a) recognize our smart spots, b) stay around those smart spots, and c) understand if/when those smart spots disappear or change. All of it is hard. Thomas Watson's quote makes it sound far easier than it is. And given IBM's success, I have little doubt he mostly accomplished it. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, is said to have this quote posted on his refrigerator... "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Perhaps Mr. Watson's quote and that quote attributed to philosopher and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson are consistent. But Emerson's quote sounds more difficult, doesn't it? Seems downright daunting! Truth is, life is daunting. Success is hard. Failure is harder! Choose your hard. Please tell a friend about the podcast! • Join our private Facebook group • Email me

This week's review is onThe Agent - No spoilers ! It's been a minute and to welcome us back is a really good one. The Agent is a 2022 Webby Award honoree and so good that I had to borrow his book “Deep Undercover: My Secret Life and Tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America” from the library. The 15 episode series tells the true story of Jack Barsky's life as a KGB spy during the cold war when he spent 10 years undercover leading two very different secret lives. It's this amazing narrative told by Barsky himself that weaves together Jack Barsky the person and Jasck Barsky the spy until something happens that leads him to have to choose between the two. The story is so immersive and wraps you up in his life. I didn't want it to be over even though in total the podcast is over 3 days' worth of audio content. It really does look at his whole life and not just what he did for work. That might be too much backstory for some, but I love glimpses into the lives of others, especially one this fascinating. It's a production of Imperative Entertainment and Windjoy and was the brainchild of Jason Hoch. Barsky, of course, plays a huge role in how the story is told. It has 4.7 out of 5 stars with 1,100 ratings but still had some common themes in the reviews. First, I think the show was once paywalled but isn't anymore. I was able to listen to all of the episodes on PocketCasts. Then there's some reviews about the Jack Barsky as a person but honestly we're not there to like Jack. Like most people his not a villain or a hero, he's just a person and this is his story. I don't think people get very far or learn anything from someone they just write off as one or the others and I encourage you to listen to the story holistically. I really appreciated his authenticity and humility. He's honest and acknowledges bad choices he's made and how that effected others. Some have labeled this as ego but putting asisde the fact that he was a spy and I'm sure that's a job requirement, I did not feel the same. From behind the Iron Curtain, Jack Barsky (not his original name) went from living in communism to operating inside capitalism against the main enemy of the Soviet Union—the United States of America. He was recruited by the KGB and spent five years being trained before coming to the USA and spying for the next ten years as an illegal rezident. Eventually, he ‘resigned' from the KGB and thought he had put his covert past behind him until the FBI showed up one day. According to his website JackBarksy.com, “ Jack is a law-abiding patriotic American citizen who is taking advantage of one last chance to live a normal life.” Check out his book “Deep Undercover: My Secret Life and Tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America”. Former Soviet KGB undercover spy Jack Barsky joins Tim to tell his story, and his long journey from Soviet Cold War operative to American citizen. Jack spent ten years in America as an undercover agent for the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. He's the author of a book called, “Deep Under Cover: My Secret Life & Tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America.” And he's the subject of the podcast called The Agent. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Jack_Barsky_KGB_Final_auphonic.mp3 To get a full appreciation for the story you're about to hear, you need to know something about the KGB. The KGB was the primary intelligence agency for the Soviet Union, from 1954 and through the fall of the USSR in the early 1990s. But the KGB was more than just a surveillance agency. Those three letters – KGB – struck fear into the hearts of everyday citizens in Russia. It also obtained a certain reputation in the West that enabled it to create no small amount of unease among Western leaders and nation states. The KGB was both a spy agency and a secret police force. You didn't want to get on the wrong side of the KGB. But as you'll hear in today's episode, one of the more mysterious and notorious things about the KGB is you just never knew who worked for the agency and who did not. This created a certain paranoia among Soviet citizens. Our guest today, Jack Barsky – not his birth name – was born in East Germany. He was recruited by the KGB and spent ten years as a deep undercover agent in the United States. As KGB operatives went, this was the elite of the elite. Jack has been the subject of a 60 Minutes feature and numerous other news stories. He's given testimony and speeches across the country. He's now the subject of a popular podcast called The Agent. And he's the author of a book called, “Deep Under Cover: My Secret Life & Tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America.” Jack's time as a KGB operative in the U.S. coincided with the U.S.-Soviet tensions of the 1980s and the eventual fall of the Soviet Union. Those are the global events, but the circumstances of his path were not as well-defined as the history books might infer. His situation was a little more complicated.
