Unlikely as it sounds Anneka Rice has long been part of a small painting group run by the extraordinary artist, Maggi Hambling. Over the years they've developed a strong bond. As Maggi puts it, the painting group is 'like family' to her. In this special episode of Open Country, Anneka travels to Suffolk to find out more about the county that has inspired Maggi's work: from her brooding seascapes, to the once controversial but now lauded Scallop on Aldeburgh beach. They start the day in a dank, dark, tree-covered ditch where Maggi hid as a teenager when she was too nervous to attend a painting class. Then to Maggi's home, where - leaving the verdant overgrowth of her garden - they enter her studio where green (a colour she hates) disappears… there are blacks and greys and just a bit of pink. Next, onto the bleak but beautiful beach at Sizewell, it's here in the shadow of the nuclear power plant that the churning North Sea most speaks to Maggi. And finally to the huge steel sculpture of the Scallop on Aldeburgh beach… a tribute to Benjamin Britten and now one of the area's most popular attractions. As Maggi drives Anneka from location to location, the warmth, humour and friendship between the two shines out. Please see the 'related links' box on the Open Country webpage for this episode to find more info about the Cedric Morris/Arthur Lett-Haines exhibition in July 2024.Presenter: Anneka Rice Producer: Karen Gregor

Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth

This week Gyles hears the reminiscences of the presenter, writer and painter Anneka Rice. Rice grew up in Surrey, the daughter of a builder and a frustrated housewife who went back to college and left 11 year-old Anneka to look after her baby sister and do the household chores. Anneka distracted herself by playing games with Action Men and dinky trucks - little did she know that these childhood fantasies would find their way into her adult life, when she donned a jumpsuit and travelled by helicopter in Treasure Hunt, and drove a truck with her name on it in Challenge Anneka. Anneka also tells Gyles about her regrets, why she took a break from the limelight, and about her love of rice pudding. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Anneka Rice's favourite place on earth is the Isle of Wight. As an accomplished and enthusiastic painter, its landscape and atmosphere have inspired her art for as long as she can remember. And she's not alone. On today's Open Country, Anneka sets out to discover why the island is one of the most creative places in the UK, famous for attracting poets, painters and photographers to its shores. From legendary names such as Tennyson, Keats and Dickens, to modern-day local artists, Anneka considers whether it's the sense of remoteness from the mainland, the ever-changing coastal landscape, the sense of community or something less tangible that inspires so much creativity. Please scroll down on the Open Country page of the Radio 4 website to find photos from the day and also the 'related links' box for more information about the interviewees.Producer: Karen Gregor

Anita is joined by Sarah Pennells, Consumer Finance Specialist at Royal London and Claer Barrett, Consumer Editor at the FT to discuss the Chancellor's plans to tackle the cost of living crisis, reform childcare, pensions and benefits. Some NHS maternity units in England have suspended the use of gas and air, also known as Entonox, in labour wards, after air quality tests showed unsafe levels of nitrous oxide on some maternity wards. Gas and air has been used for decades to help women in labour reduce their pain. But air quality tests have raised the risk of long-term effects for the midwives, nurses and doctors who are exposed to it for a long period of time in often-unventilated labour wards. Gaby Hinsliff, The Guardian columnist has been looking into this developing story. Nearly 30 years after she last donned her legendary jumpsuit, TV presenter Anneka Rice is back on TV screens with a new series of Challenge Anneka. I wanted to start the podcast with a very special episode and an incredibly special person who has known me for many years. Anneka Rice is a TV presenter, radio host, author and artist who has known me since I was a little girl. She's witnessed a lot of my journey, and I thought there was no better way to begin the podcast than to have her to ask me a few questions so that you can all get to know me a little better and understand why I'm really doing this podcast. Anneka has witnessed my ongoing struggle with OCD and an eating disorder. In this interview she asks me about my early childhood and the impact that it might have had on my mental health, my school life and the early manifestations of the OCD and anorexia. We also discuss what help I have received over the years and how I struggled during my 20s and battled my illnesses alongside being a lawyer. This conversation will hopefully give you a bit of an insight into my journey and as the series continues you will get to know me more!Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram:@hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Sue Gray's report into what went on in Downing Steet during lockdown has finally been published. We now know that staff broke covid rules with the approval of their bosses. Excessive drinking, with people being sick, abuse of cleaning and security staff – events, Sue Gray says, that “should not have been allowed to happen”. Details of some of the events she investigated only became known to her because of reporting in the media. Ros Atkins asks what role the media has played in the whole saga. Also in the programme, Anneka Rice talks about the return of Challenge Anneka for Channel 5. Guests: Stephen Glover, columnist at the Daily Mail, David Yelland, former editor of The Sun and now director of the communications firm Kitchen Table Partners, Tim Montgomerie, founder of the Conservative Home website and former Boris Johnson advisor, Ayesha Hazarika, broadcaster and former Labour politician adviser, and Anneka Rice, presenter of Challenge Anneka Presenter: Ros Atkins Sound engineer: Tim Heffer Producer: Helen Fitzhenry
