Description: "When joint pain is present, the diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis needs to be made as soon as possible, ideally within six months to limit joint inflammation" Dr. Vinod Chandran mentions as he discusses efforts to identify a diagnostic test for those at risk of developing psoriatic arthritis. Join host Jeff Brown as he speaks with leading rheumatologist and clinician scientist Dr. Vinod Chandran, Director of the Gladman Krembil Psoriatic Arthritis Program, Schroeder Arthritis Institute, University Health Network and the Departments of Medicine, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, and the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto to learn more about the progress and promising results towards developing a psoriatic arthritis diagnostic test through multi-omic assays and identifying the distinct differences between psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This episode provides an update on the progress to date of the NPF PsA Diagnostic Test grant initiative which has shown promising results with a potential test entering prospective study in multiple sites soon. Thank you to Johnson and Johnson for their support of this program activity. Timestamps: (0:00) Intro to Psoriasis Uncovered & guest welcome rheumatologist Dr. Vinod Chandran. (0:52) It is challenging to diagnose psoriatic arthritis with many factors leading to a delay in diagnosis. (4:56) The start of Dr. Chandran's involvement with the PsA Diagnostic Test Grant project. (7:55) The different types of omics and the definition of multi-omic. (9:57) How the multi-omic approach is used to find biomarkers relative to a specific disease pattern. (11:08) Development of a predictive or prevention-based test using gene expression. (13:46) First year results identify 200 markers across different omic approaches that distinguish psoriatic arthritis from psoriasis. (14:58) The significance of MRNA vs mIcroRNA's use in development of a diagnostic test and how critical that is to dissemination of a potential test. (17:08) Identifying the skin-joint axis in relation to different types of arthritis. (20:20) Next steps to moving the diagnostic test research forward as a prospective study in multiple sites and the cost effectiveness of delivering the test. (23:13) If you have psoriasis, musculoskeletal, back, and joint pain think of psoriatic arthritis and be diagnosed early to maintain a good quality of life. Key Takeaways: · Given challenges associated with diagnosing psoriatic arthritis and the impact on quality of life, in 2019 NPF launched the PsA Diagnostic Test Grant project with the goal of developing an early stage test that would identify and diagnose those with psoriatic arthritis before debilitating joint damage begins. · Progress towards a PsA Diagnostic Test includes the study of multi-omic data sets where 200 distinct biomarkers have been identified leading to a greater understanding of the different pathways between psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, and the skin joint axis. · A potential diagnostic test is now moving towards the prospective study phase. Until the test is available and if joint pain is present and you have psoriasis, ask your health care provider if it could be psoriatic arthritis and treat appropriately. It isn't easy joining a beloved ensemble in the second season of their show and making enough of an impression to earn a place among them, but Charithra Chandran certainly accomplished just that playing Vivi in One Piece: Into the Grand Line. Soon after making the shift from Baroque Works agent Miss Wednesday to the Princess of Alabasta, Chandran's Vivi not only feels right among the Straw Hats, but also proves she's the kind of person who can make them an even stronger pirate crew and found family. With Into the Grand Line now available to stream on Netflix, Chandran visited the Collider Ladies Night studio to look back on her journey to becoming a Netflix star, and to dig into some of Vivi's biggest scenes in One Piece Season 2, like the moment she shares with Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) at the gates of Drum Island in Episode 6, “Nami Deerest.” Hosted on Acast. When a compassionate helpline counsellor begins to grow concerned for the safety of one of her clients, she's forced to decide whether to trust her instincts or follow protocol. Safe is a tense, quietly powerful drama about the weight of responsibility and the courage it takes to listen. Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? Honestly it started with the concept of showcasing our lead actress (Kelsey Cooke) and her talent – holding the audience attention and emotions as the sole person on-screen (supported by some incredible voice actors of course). Once we had the concept and decided how to approach it thematically, it became all about bringing authenticity to such a heavy topic and trying to do so in a way that did not feel exploitative but felt, informative and considered. I wrote the film alongside Kelsey Cooke who brought such depth to everything that we did. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? We had the concept in November 2024, but commitments on other projects meant we agreed to only start working on it at the end of January 2025. We wrote between February and March, applied for the Arts Council of the Isle of Man Short Film Fund and were awarded that in April. Location scouting on the isle took place shortly after with production in June and post production in July-August. How would you describe your film in two words!? That's tough – and I think all of us will have different words for it but for me as director it would be: Vulnerable. Honest. —— Subscribe to the podcast: Tweets by wildsoundpod https://www.instagram.com/wildsoundpod/ https://www.facebook.com/wildsoundpod

Insider accounts from political aides, bureaucrats, and diplomats have long illuminated the workings of power—but even more enigmatic were the lobbyists. Operating in the shadows, often invisible to public scrutiny, they were intimately privy to clandestine negotiations, back-channel discussions, and subtle bureaucratic skirmishes. In his new roman-à-clef For No Reason At All, Ramjee Chandran shines a light on this hidden world. Chandran—well‑known in Bangalore as a journalist, publisher, and podcaster—has, until now, remained silent about his time as a lobbyist in 1980s New Delhi, a pivotal era just before major economic reforms took hold. Drawing from real events, the novel charts the journey of a young lobbyist caught in a high-stakes conflict over silicon metal—a material deemed strategically vital. Central to the drama is Metkem Silicon, which, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, devoted 17 years to developing indigenous silicon metal technology. Yet their efforts collided with a rival scheme spearheaded by the Department of Electronics, which wanted to bypass local innovation and import U.S. technology. What ensued was a four‑year bureaucratic war: media leaks, secret memorandums, and the covert involvement of the Soviets and other intelligence agencies—culminating in a final decision placed in the hands of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Set against the backdrop of Cold War Delhi on the cusp of liberalisation, the novel paints a vivid portrait of a nation—and capital—torn between ideologies and ambitions. The Soviet Union may have vanished, lobbyists have receded from public corridors, and few can claim first‑hand knowledge of that era. In Confessions of a Lobbyist, Siddharth Raja—a lawyer, historian, and bibliophile—sits down with Ramjee Chandran to peel back the layers of this story, offering an insider's glimpse into a world that feels at once distant and disarmingly relevant. In this episode of BIC Talks, Ramjee Chandran will be in conversation with Siddharth Raja. This is an excerpt from a conversation that took place in the BIC premises in Aug 2025. Rob Colletti, the live-action actor playing Wapol in the upcoming new season of Netflix's One Piece, is coming to the defense of Charithra Chandran for portraying Miss Wednesday, also known as Nefertari Vivi, as a woman of color. Chandran's social media channels have been flooded with hateful, racist remarks following the Season 2 trailer premiere at One Piece Day 2025.Colletti, currently cast as "Tin-Plate" Wapol for the "Drum Island" arc of One Piece Season 2, took to social media to address the hateful comments being sent to Chandran after the latest Netflix trailer teased her appearance as Miss Wednesday. Although the One Piece cast was designed to be multiracial by series creator Eiichiro Oda, toxic fans online have attacked Chandran for portraying Vivi, who is depicted with fair skin in the anime and manga, as a British Indian actor. "It's astonishing to me in all the wrong ways how a certain small (but far too vocal) corners of the One Piece fandom can watch a rubber pirate, a reindeer doctor, and giant walking, talking fish and be totally fine... but draw the line at the simple IDEA of Nefertari Vivi being played by a woman who isn't white," Colletti said on his latest Instagram Stories.Support The Podcast!https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/roose366/subscribeFollow For More Content &Streams!Science Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5nFXe9dPeWrMpyObyAlrnF?si=7358d1cf32cb45b7Youtube Gaming: https://www.youtube.com/@RooseJp/videosTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@podcastonanime
Recently, a vocal if small subsection of fans online have been up in arms over the casting of Charithra Chandran in the role of Miss Wednesday in the upcoming second season of Netflix's live-action One Piece adaptation. In response to the backlash, Chandran's fellow incoming One Piece star Rob Colletti explained that "Charithra was hand-selected by [franchise creator] Oda, and he has far more knowledge and understanding of his own characters than anyone else, particularly the hateful, unimaginative creeps who actually have the audacity to get on the internet to throw hate speech towards an actor without even seeing their absolutely amazing performance on the show."Colletti continued, "But let's talk facts: 'Nefertari' is Egyptian. Where is Egypt? The Middle East. The kingdom of Alabasta draws heavily from Middle Eastern and Southern Asian culture. And you're complaining because the actor chosen to play the role... isn't white?! Do you know how ridiculous you sound?!... [Chandran] embodies EVERYTHING the heroes of One Piece are written to embody, and we are SO LUCKY to have her helping us tell this story."Support The Podcast!https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/roose366/subscribeFollow For More Content &Streams!Science Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5nFXe9dPeWrMpyObyAlrnF?si=7358d1cf32cb45b7Youtube Gaming: https://www.youtube.com/@RooseJp/videosTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@podcastonanime
Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust PLC (LSE:TEM) Vice President, Senior Product Specialist Sri Chandran joined Stephen Gunnion in the Proactive studio to discuss the trust's approach to investing in global emerging markets. TEMIT, the UK's oldest and largest emerging markets investment trust, aims to deliver long-term capital appreciation by investing in companies across developing economies. Chandran explained that emerging markets are forecast to outperform developed markets in terms of economic growth, driven by demographic trends and consumption tailwinds, for instance. “This is not the asset class of the past,” Chandran said, noting improvements in corporate governance, lower debt levels relative to developed markets, and the rise of innovative businesses such as technology firms powering the digital revolution. He highlighted TEMIT's selective, bottom-up stock-picking strategy that focuses on businesses capable of sustaining earnings power and trading at a discount. The portfolio typically holds around 80 high-conviction stocks, including TSMC and SK Hynix in semiconductors, and ICICI Bank in India, for instance. Chandran also addressed TEMIT's differentiators: a deep local research footprint with over 70 professionals, an experienced portfolio management team, and consistent historic outperformance of the index. The trust trades at what he described as a “triple discount”—the asset class, the portfolio, and the trust's market price all offering value. Maya Kaimal is an entrepreneur & Cook book author who has been an early inspiration for the South Asian culinary field in the US. Raised in Boston then Boulder, Maya's passion for food and cooking blossomed at a young age. From watching Julia Child's The French Chef with her mother, Lorraine, to tasting her father Chandran's vibrant South Indian dishes, Maya's interest in food was piqued. Her curiosity in spice, taste and cooking developed during trips to her father's home in Kerala as Maya learned to cook with her Aunty Kamala. Maya worked at various magazines in New York and she saw an extraordinary gap between what she grew up eating and what the western palate thought Indian food was. One realization and three cookbooks later, Maya's desire to educate and create hasn't stopped. She is now dedicated to making Indian food that's accessible to Americans, but true to her roots. In 2003, Maya launched her namesake company with her husband, Guy Lawson, out of their Brooklyn apartment after seeing a lack of quality Indian products in grocery stores. In her twenties, Dr. Sonayna Chandran was simply going with the flow, unsure of her life's direction, unaware that she was capable of more. Tired of living without a purpose, Sonayna decided to make a change. She began talking to a therapist. She hired a fitness coach. She started working out religiously and eating nutritious foods that supported, not defeated, her fitness goals. After that, everything started clicking. Sonayna started feeling better about herself. She gained more confidence, something she'd long struggled with. Her relationships blossomed. Toxic self-defeating behaviors became a thing of the past. Plus, she started seeing her abs! Amazed by how some simple lifestyle changes could drastically affect the quality of her day-to-day life, Sonayna decided during the pandemic that she also wanted to help people stop with the self-destructive behaviors that once threatened to derail Sonayna from realizing her own potential. Now, Sonayna spends her days in London helping, healing, and educating as an online women's coach. And on today's episode, she returns to the podcast to discuss the following: Intro (00:00) Why Sonayna started an online coaching business (00:49) Where Sonayna went wrong in her twenties (04:06) Why she loves helping people realize their potential (09:52) How to lose weight safely (15:50) Why dieting is NOT deprivation (23:32) How women can get the "hourglass" body type (25:20) How to MAKE TIME for exercise (27:28) The healthiest thing you can do for yourself right now (30:40) The importance of just showing up (36:03) Plus, Sonayna dives deep into something that's very, very personal (37:55) at the end of today's episode. I'm very grateful that she shared this part of her story, and I'm even more grateful to call her a close friend. To support Sonayna (b/c she deserves it), please give her a follow on Instagram @sc.coaching_ To support this podcast, please give it a follow on my Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube feeds. What does it mean when you are the first to 'be seen'? In 2018, Constance Wu received a Golden Globe Best Lead Actress nomination. She was the first Asian woman in 44 years to be named in the category for her historic role in Crazy Rich Asians, the first Hollywood film in 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast. After a tweet bemoaning the hit Chinese American sitcom Fresh Off The Boat, which launched her career, she was ‘cancelled' by many from her own community. Wu talks to us about the pressures of representation and being seen. What is our responsibility in what we show people? Zara McDermott, social media influencer, former Love Island reality TV star and now filmmaker, talks to us about the responsibility we have in reflecting a balanced and authentic image of ourselves online. In Zara's recent BBC Three documentary, Disordered Eating, she questions her responsibilities as a social media influencer. How can we help others be seen? Dr Jess Wade is a physicist from Imperial College London who creates wiki profiles for women in science. Wikipedia is the largest and most-read reference work in history, yet Jess says only 19 percent of profiles are of women. She tells us how and why she hopes to change that. What if you see yourself in someone but choose the path not taken? Rotherham listeners, Becky and her mum Jackie, discuss how they do and don't see themselves in each other. If you met your hero, what would you say to them? An intergenerational conversation between two women who inspire each other: Gurinder Chadha is the Director of the landmark film Bend It Like Beckham which turned 20 this year, and Charitha Chandran plays Edwina Sharma in season two of the hit Netflix period drama Bridgerton. Presenter: Jessica Creighton Producer: Surya Elango
