With the fifth anniversary of the last big Hong Kong marches behind us and the first anniversary of the National Security Law's imposition on the horizon, Jeffrey Wasserstrom and Emily Feng assess the city's recent past and significantly changed realities. What is the legacy of the protest surge of 2019? What is most and least surprising about how Hong Kong has been transformed in this decade? How can we place the Hong Kong story into national narratives about the way the PRC has been moving under Xi Jinping? How can we connect the Hong Kong events to trends in other parts of Asia and beyond? In an interview conducted on April 9, 2025, Jeffrey Wasserstrom and Emily Feng, in conversation with Sewell Chan, discuss the implications of developments in Hong Kong over the last ten years for HK-mainland relations, Sino-American relations, and trends in the region. In 2020, China implemented the National Security Law (NSL) in Hong Kong, making a wide range of political activities illegal and further reducing the city's autonomy. Last November, a court sentenced 45 pro-democracy figures to four to ten years in prison in the largest trial since the NSL was adopted. Political and legal changes have continued in Hong Kong, reshaping the Legislative Council and the way cases deemed a matter of “national security” are decided. What does the current situation in Hong Kong mean for the future of civil liberties and human rights in the city? What are the broader implications for Hong Kong's future as a global financial center and intellectual hub? How do events in Hong Kong affect U.S.-China relations? In an interview recorded on February 28, 2025, Carole Petersen and Ho-Fung Hung, in conversation with Thomas Kellogg, discuss the ongoing changes in Hong Kong. Anneka wants to take Shaun back to the place and time that made her: the intense rush of Hong Kong in the 1980's, where she lived and worked a variety of improbable jobs from kung fu film dubbing to jeans modelling. But Shaun is not sure that intense rushes are for him, although he is drawn to the Blade Runner-like skyscrapery vertiginous appeal of the place. And also to the pavement chicken. Resident geographer, historian and comedian Iszi Lawrence has lived there too and tries to help him see through the smog.Your Place Or Mine is the travel series that isn't going anywhere. Join Shaun as his guests try to convince him that it's worth getting up off the sofa and seeing the world, giving us a personal guide to their favourite place on the planet.Producers: Beth O'Dea and Sarah GoodmanYour Place or Mine is a BBC Audio production for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Mel Gurtov, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Portland State University, Editor-in-Chief of Asian Perspective, blogger at In the Human Interest, and author of Engaging China: Rebuilding Sino-American, joins us to discuss the 2023 Chinese Spy Balloon Incident aka #Balloongate that has further inflamed tensions between the U.S. and China. The incident caused an uproar on Capitol Hill and led to Secretary of State Antony Blinken cancelling a diplomatic trip to China. Initially China claimed it was merely a weather balloon that veered off course. The U.S. has said otherwise. The reporting has been that it was indeed a surveillance balloon. The ballon was first believed to enter U.S. airspace near Alaska on January 28th before moving over Canada. On February 1st the ballon was spotted over Montana before being shot down by a U.S. fighter jet on February 4th. We discuss the importance of this story, the response by the U.S. and China, how the situation could've been handled differently/better, the growing tensions between the U.S. and China, and the future of Sino-American relations. Among the topics covered: - The Biden administration vs. the Trump administration on China - The bipartisan consensus in Washington, D.C. and it's hostility to China; tariffs, trade wars, and Trump's China policy; China as a strategic threat from the Biden administration's point-of-view - Why Blinken's diplomatic visit to China being cancelled could be seen as a missed opportunity - Republican pressure for a hawkish, hardline response to China in regards to the spy balloon incident - The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, AUKUS, Japan, the Philippines, Guam, and security treaty partnerships - The U.S. role in Taiwan, strategic ambiguity vs. strategic clarity positions on Taiwan, China, and foreign policy - The issue of human right abuses in China; the Uyghur Muslims in China; Hong Kong - China's response to the spy balloon incident; U.S. surveillance in China; satellite technology and spying; was the balloon an immediate threat? - President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping, the People's Liberation Army, the nature of bureaucracy as it relates to Balloongate, China's Foreign Ministry and the U.S. State Department, and the spy balloon - The potential consequences/blowback of the Chinese Spy Balloon Incident; the hawkish element in China and its press is being fed by the U.S. response; paranoia begets paranoia; the blame game is being played by the U.S. and China and is making diplomatic engagement more difficult - International security, the U.S., and China; can the U.S. and China find common ground on pandemic response research, climate change, and nuclear weapons? - Are we in a New Cold War? - The U.S., China, and the global economy - Lessons to be learned from the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union - Comparing the Chinese spy balloon incident to other tense U.S.-China moments such as the shooting down of a Chinese jet over Hainan in 2001 - What has happened to diplomacy and use of the diplomatic toolbox in U.S. foreign policy?; the national security apparatus, the Cold War mindset, ossifying institutions, and opposition to diplomatic engagement with adversaries - Former World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick's Washington Post op-ed "Opinion Engage, don't cancel, China over the balloon" - Anti-Chinese violence and racism; the Justice Department, the China Initiative, and the McCarthyite crackdown against visiting Chinese scientists that's been called racial profiling - The pandemic, U.S. vs China's response to the pandemic, Zero COVID policy and protests against Xi, anti-China conspiracy theories about the pandemic, China's handling of the pandemic, and Donald Trump use of the term the "China" virus - Misperceptions about China; China is not a monolithic Borg entity; the limited understanding many American have of China even at a professional (even government level); looking at the world through Chinese eyes; China, cultural differences, and the pros and cons of U.S. individualism - Stereotyping and demonization of the Chinese; China as a diverse country - And more!

What is Hong Kong? According to the British, a “barren rock” without meaningful history; to China, a part of Chinese soil from the beginning of time, finally returned to its rightful place in 1997. When protests erupted in 2019 and were met with escalating suppression, Louisa Lim, a journalist raised in Hong Kong who as an adult has covered the region for more than a decade, felt compelled to tell Hong Kong's untold stories. In Indelible City: Dispossession and Defiance in Hong Kong, Dr. Lim combines history and memoir to explicate Hong Kong's history, the present reality that Hong Kong is not “just another Chinese city,” and the future that may be unfolding. In an interview conducted on June 27, 2022, Louisa Lim centers Hong Kongers as she discusses a diverse cast of characters including the memorable and mysterious King of Kowloon. Have you always assumed Hong Kong would be prohibitively expensive to live in? When Brits Ben Zabulis and Hilary Garland spent nine hectic years living and working in Hong Kong, they didn't consider retiring there. The worklife in the city grew tiresome and the couple returned to England. Unbeknownst to them, that move would mark the beginning of their retirement while still in their 40s. Eventually, they returned to Hong Kong and found ways to make living there pleasantly affordable. Find out more about the surprising retirement destination of Hong Kong, on episode 85 of Retire There with Gil & Gene. Ben Zabulis authored Chartered Territory: An Engineer Abroad.
The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of China's State Council says Hong Kong is poised for a brighter future under the improved electoral system.
In this episode, I'm speaking with Steve Vines, who was a journalist based in Hong Kong for 35 years until he recently left for political reasons in 2021. Steve shares the rapid series of events that ultimately led to his departure from the country he called “home.” Steve sheds light on the current situation in Hong Kong by looking back at its history and the resilient spirit of Hong Kong, which he has studied in depth for his new book, Defying the Dragon: Hong Kong and the World's Largest Dictatorship. He discusses how there was once a high degree of liberty and low democracy in Hong Kong, but now both are non-existent. Later in the episode, we hear a fictional story about the oppression and propaganda that is prevalent in Hong Kong. White Terror - A Fictional Story in Print IN THIS EPISODE: [01:11] Steve's departure from Hong Kong [07:39] White Terror explained [10:20] Democracy, Liberty and the Special Administrative Region [18:30] The incredible spirit of Hong Kong [23:00] What other societies can learn from the situation in Hong Kong [30:29] FICTION: White Terror [33:33] Bob defies the warnings to stay in at night [37:00] Bob leaves Hong Kong after witnessing something terrible KEY TAKEAWAYS: White Terror refers to the suppression of the democracy movement by the Taiwanwese government after they left the main Chinese mainland and installed a regime on the island of Taiwan. It's what is similarly happening in Hong Kong now. The Special Administrative Region claimed that Hong Kong would be a fully-fledged capitalist society until 2047. If we look back more carefully, the mainland never really saw one country or two systems applying to the political orient. The narrative that is spun in Hong Kong by the Chinese communist party is that the terrible people of Hong Kong brought all these troubles on themselves by provoking the mainland. Hong Kong survived the 1960s and came back stronger. Hong Kong has survived enormous economic recessions, and many, many things but come back stronger. So the question is, will the spirit of Hong Kong survive this? BIO: Stephen Vines was a Hong Kong based journalist, writer and businessman until 2021 when he was forced to leave for political reasons. He is the author of Defying the Dragon – Hong Kong and the World's Largest Dictatorship. In Hong Kong, he was the founding Chief Editor of ‘Eastern Express,' a groundbreaking daily newspaper published in Hong Kong. He was also a founder and publisher of Spike magazine. He presented a weekly current affairs television programme – The Pulse – produced by RTHK and is a frequent broadcaster and commentator on business and political affairs for newspapers and a number of international radio and TV stations. Vines combined writing with founding and running a number of companies, mainly in the food sector and this has enabled him to learn a lot more about how business really works. He is the author of a number of books including ‘Hong Kong: China's New Colony' and a study of the Asian financial crisis called ‘The Years of Living Dangerously'. He is also author of the multi-edition ‘Market Panic' and ‘Food Gurus.' Stephen Vines was the Deputy Business Editor of The Observer and has worked for The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, and the BBC. How did Hong Kong, a key port in China, become a British territory and then eventually leave British control? Given the current issues in Hong Kong, this is a loaded question, and one that can only be addressed by a Hong Konger. In this episode, my guest and I discuss how the British flooded China with opium in the 1830's, utilizing its addictive nature as fuel for the Opium Wars.
