Max Pearson presents a collection of the week's Witness History interviews from the BBC World Service. Our guest is food historian Dr Annie Gray. She discusses the impact of the first modern, fitted kitchen - the Frankfurt Kitchen - on the kitchens of today. It all goes back to 1926 and the reluctant Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky who said she wanted to be remembered for more than designing a "damned" kitchen. Sorry Margarete.Next is the invention of the board game Cluedo, or Clue in the United States, which stemmed from playing the piano at murder mystery parties in English country houses and hotels in the 1930s.Then, we enter the murky world of computer viruses. The first one to affect personal computers in 1986 became known as 'Brain'.We hear from a survivor of the deadly mudslides which affected Venezuela in December 1999.A Lotus mechanic gives his account of Brazilian racing star Ayrton Senna's first Formula 1 win in 1985.And finally, a glimpse into a period of freedom in Afghanistan from 2005 when a TV musical talent contest called Afghan Star gripped audiences.Contributors:Christine Zwingl - architect.Marcia Lewis - daughter of the creators of Cluedo.Amjad Farooq Alvi - founder of Brain Computers.Leydys Crespo - survivor of Venezuelan mudslides in 1999.Chris Dinnage - Ayrton Senna's mechanic.Jahid Mohseni - the development producer for Afghan Star.(Picture: A 1950s fitted kitchen. Air raids and blackouts during World War Two helped Anthony Pratt invent one of the most popular family board games: Cluedo. But the musician's real inspiration came from his job in the 1930s, playing piano at murder mystery parties in English country houses and hotels. Once war broke out, Anthony killed time at home in Birmingham by developing rules for his new 'whodunnit' game. While he created the colourful characters and weapons, his wife Elva drew up the board, based on the rooms of a Tudor mansion. The first version was launched in 1949, and since then more than 150 million copies have been sold around the world, including in the US where it's known as Clue.Anthony and Elva's daughter Marcia Lewis tells Jane Wilkinson about how her parent's idea became a global hit. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the civil rights swimming protest; the disastrous D-Day rehearsal; and the death of one of the world's oldest languages.(Photo: Cluedo box, 1949.

The board game “Clue” originated in the 1940s as “Cluedo” overseas and was later brought to the U.S. by Parker Brothers. Now owned by Hasbro, it has inspired many spin-offs, including a TV show, themed editions like the “Simpsons” version, and a VCR game. Alongside classics like “Monopoly,” “Cranium,” “The Game of Life,” “Sorry!,” and “Mouse Trap,” as well as junior games like “Candyland” and “Chutes and Ladders,” “Clue” has stood the test of time. Turning “Clue” into a movie was inevitable. Was it a big hit? Not really. But it was fun! Loose Ends is the guest of Durham Brass Festival this week, providing flugelhorns, euphoniums and an enthusiastic audience at the newly refurbished 110 year old Redhills Miners Hall, once known as "the Pitman's Parliament". Far from brassed off to be with him is the poet laureate Simon Armitage who finds exactly the right words to describe the magic of brass music but then admits to never having won a game of Cluedo. Perhaps unsurprisingly the thriller writer Paula Hawkins tells us she was something of a Cluedo ace in her youth but these days sticks to reconnoitring ideas for places to stash bodies for future novels. And there's laughs aplenty from the comedian Ria Lina who sensibly doesn't enter the Cluedo-debate though one suspects her masters in forensic science might give her an edge. All this with gorgeous music from Bill Ryder Jones with cellist Evelyn Halls and members of the NASUWT Riverside Brass Ensemble.Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced by Olive Clancy

What's up, dudes? Clue is one my family's favorite board games. I'm joined by my brother Danny to talk about the British game show version of it. Yes, there was an extended Christmas special and everything! We're talking Cluedo “Christmas Past, Christmas Present!”It's Christmas Day at Arlington Grange, and the lady of the manor, Mrs. Peacock, has invited a few close friends to share the turkey dinner.  Richard Forrest, former owner of the estate, has come calling dressed as Father Christmas and he brought his chauffeur Ken. His father was a judge, and all of the suspects appeared before him in court at one time or other. He also kept diaries with his own thoughts of who was guilty.Just like the movie, the guest brings gifts for each suspect, distributing deadly weapons. Each weapon insinuates their guilt in a court case. During a Christmas scavenger hunt quiz game, Ken the chauffeur is found dead! He was the real Forrest and wanted to blackmail Peacock so she would sell him back the manor. Consequently, Miss Scarlett, who just discovered her liver Col. Mustard was having an affair with her stepmother Peacock, realized the scheme. She killed the real Forrest with the weapon Peacock was given to remove the blackmailer and to throw suspicion onto her.Murder? Check. Christmas quiz? Got it. Father Christmas robes? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Anthony Pratt wanted to elevate playing board games from games of chance to thinking games. His wife was responsible for keeping it random. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [JS Pest Control Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here with Stephen Semple. Today, Stephen told me we're going to talk about the board game Clue, Colonel Mustard in the library with the candlestick. Something like that. Stephen Semple: There you go. Dave Young: It's been a long time. It's been a long time since I've played Clue. Stephen Semple: Did you play Clue much as a kid? Dave Young: Not really. Stephen Semple: No? Okay. Dave Young: It was never my type of game, and I'm not sure why. Stephen Semple: Okay. Well, because you would've had to play it with your sisters. That's probably the problem. Dave Young: Yeah, that's probably it. Stephen Semple: More therapy for Dave about to [inaudible 00:02:01] right now. Dave Young: Yeah, you had to think. There was that thinking involved and eliminating things and... Stephen Semple: Well, it's interesting that you bring up the whole concept of thinking because when Clue came out, so it was created in 1949, when Clue came out, pre-World War II games, especially for kids, were like these mindless games of chance or things that required a little bit of a degree of skill. That was sort of all the games. There were not really any games that were thinking games. And Clue was sort of one of the first ones to come along to break into that whole genre of how do we make a game that's more of a thinking game and, frankly, it's not just a kid game as an adult game. Dave Young: Sure, yeah. And then it became a movie and all kinds of things. Stephen Semple: Oh, all kinds of things. And the original name was not Clue. The original name was Cluedo, so C-L-U-E-D-O, Cluedo. Dave Young: Cluedo. Stephen Semple: And it was created by Andrew Pratt. Today it's owned by Hasbro, and they sold like 150 million games. So it's gone on to become like a really big deal and, look, if you ask most people about Clue, they know what it is. Dave Young: Surely. Yeah. We all played it. Stephen Semple: So it's pre-World War II and games were mindless games of chance and whatnot, and there's nothing in between, and Anthony Pratt decides he wants to develop a game. Now, he was a pianist before the war, and he often did entertainment at murder mystery parties, and he remembers people love the murder mystery parties. Dave Young: Murder mystery parties have been going on that long? Stephen Semple: Yes. Yeah. Dave Young: See, I had no idea about that. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: And they were really hugely popular. It was driven by, remember there's Agatha Christie, when she was writing in her prime, was just huge. There was a whole Agatha Christie thing, and so that fueled a lot of these murder mystery parties. So here he is, it's World War II, they're in bunkers, killing time, trying to figure out how to create things that are fun. He starts thinking about, like, how could you build a murder mystery game that you could play. He's reading Agatha Christie books and discovers there's all these archetypes and whatnot. That's how he came up with the idea about, well, how about a colonel and a professor and a femme fatale and an entitled rich and a servant?

Mr. Boddy, the host, is blackmailing all of them, from the jealous wife to the adulterous doctor to the maid's employer. One by one others arrive at the house only to be picked off as they're implicated as blackmail accomplices. With three different endings, the movie answers the questions of who killed Mr. Boddy, and where, and with what. The December release quickly became a cult classic. Jeff interviews cast and crew from Leslie Ann Warren and Michael McKean to director Jonathan Lynn. What was the enigmatic fourth ending? How did Jonathan Lynn end up writing the script? Why weren't the characters wearing the colors of their game counterparts? Blackmail? Yep. Murder? Of course. Flames on the side of my face? Only if Madeline Kahn is saying it.
