Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 142 Sam is joined by comedian, writer and actor Nick Mohammed. His latest film, also starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom, is available to stream now on Prime.  Nick has chosen Clue (97 mins). Based on the board game Cluedo and released in 1985, the film stars Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, and Michael McKean. Sam and Nick discuss comedy and acting career, why farcical films endure the test of time, and why this 97 minute long film is indeed eligible for the 90 Mins or Less Film Fest. What's up, dudes? Clue is one my family's favorite board games. I'm joined by my brother Danny to talk about the British game show version of it. Yes, there was an extended Christmas special and everything! We're talking Cluedo “Christmas Past, Christmas Present!”It's Christmas Day at Arlington Grange, and the lady of the manor, Mrs. Peacock, has invited a few close friends to share the turkey dinner.  Richard Forrest, former owner of the estate, has come calling dressed as Father Christmas and he brought his chauffeur Ken. His father was a judge, and all of the suspects appeared before him in court at one time or other. He also kept diaries with his own thoughts of who was guilty.Just like the movie, the guest brings gifts for each suspect, distributing deadly weapons. Each weapon insinuates their guilt in a court case. During a Christmas scavenger hunt quiz game, Ken the chauffeur is found dead! He was the real Forrest and wanted to blackmail Peacock so she would sell him back the manor. Consequently, Miss Scarlett, who just discovered her liver Col. Mustard was having an affair with her stepmother Peacock, realized the scheme. She killed the real Forrest with the weapon Peacock was given to remove the blackmailer and to throw suspicion onto her.Murder? Check. Christmas quiz? Got it. Father Christmas robes? Only if the murder victim can wear it! So grab your knife, hunt for clues, and play along to this episode on Cluedo “Christmas Past, Christmas Present!”Give us a buzz!

Today, Stephen told me we're going to talk about the board game Clue, Colonel Mustard in the library with the candlestick. Something like that. Stephen Semple: There you go. Dave Young: It's been a long time. It's been a long time since I've played Clue. Stephen Semple: Did you play Clue much as a kid? Dave Young: Not really. Stephen Semple: No? Okay. Dave Young: It was never my type of game, and I'm not sure why. Stephen Semple: Okay. Well, because you would've had to play it with your sisters. That's probably the problem. Dave Young: Yeah, that's probably it. Stephen Semple: More therapy for Dave about to [inaudible 00:02:01] right now. Dave Young: Yeah, you had to think. There was that thinking involved and eliminating things and... Stephen Semple: Well, it's interesting that you bring up the whole concept of thinking because when Clue came out, so it was created in 1949, when Clue came out, pre-World War II games, especially for kids, were like these mindless games of chance or things that required a little bit of a degree of skill. That was sort of all the games. There were not really any games that were thinking games. And Clue was sort of one of the first ones to come along to break into that whole genre of how do we make a game that's more of a thinking game and, frankly, it's not just a kid game as an adult game. Dave Young: Sure, yeah. And then it became a movie and all kinds of things. Stephen Semple: Oh, all kinds of things. And the original name was not Clue. The original name was Cluedo, so C-L-U-E-D-O, Cluedo. Dave Young: Cluedo. Stephen Semple: And it was created by Andrew Pratt. Today it's owned by Hasbro, and they sold like 150 million games. So it's gone on to become like a really big deal and, look, if you ask most people about Clue, they know what it is. Dave Young: Surely. Yeah. We all played it. Stephen Semple: So it's pre-World War II and games were mindless games of chance and whatnot, and there's nothing in between, and Anthony Pratt decides he wants to develop a game. Now, he was a pianist before the war, and he often did entertainment at murder mystery parties, and he remembers people love the murder mystery parties. Dave Young: Murder mystery parties have been going on that long? Stephen Semple: Yes. Yeah. Dave Young: See, I had no idea about that. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: And they were really hugely popular. It was driven by, remember there's Agatha Christie, when she was writing in her prime, was just huge. There was a whole Agatha Christie thing, and so that fueled a lot of these murder mystery parties. So here he is, it's World War II, they're in bunkers, killing time, trying to figure out how to create things that are fun. He starts thinking about, like, how could you build a murder mystery game that you could play. He's reading Agatha Christie books and discovers there's all these archetypes and whatnot. That's how he came up with the idea about, well, how about a colonel and a professor and a femme fatale and an entitled rich and a servant?

What's up, dudes? The Christmas release “Clue” is soooo good that I have to cover it again! This time I've got Matt Spaulding from North Pole Radio and Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas with me to solve the mystery! When six strangers are invited to a mysterious mansion for dinner, murder is on the menu. Mr. Boddy, the host, is blackmailing all of them, from the jealous wife to the adulterous doctor to the maid's employer. One by one others arrive at the house only to be picked off as they're implicated as blackmail accomplices. With three different endings, the movie answers the questions of who killed Mr. Boddy, and where, and with what. The December release quickly became a cult classic. Jeff interviews cast and crew from Leslie Ann Warren and Michael McKean to director Jonathan Lynn. What was the enigmatic fourth ending? How did Jonathan Lynn end up writing the script? Why weren't the characters wearing the colors of their game counterparts? Blackmail? Yep. Murder? Of course. Flames on the side of my face? Only if Madeline Kahn is saying it. So grab your revolver, shoot the singing telegram, and run from room to room listening to this episode!Clue: The Movie Podcast Who Done It: The Clue DocumentaryFB: @ClueDocumentaryTwitter: @WhoDoneItDocIG: @cluedocumentaryGive us a buzz! Inside No. 9 is a British black comedy anthology series that aired from February 5, 2014, to June 12, 2024. Written by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith and produced by the BBC. The only recurring elements are a setting related to the number 9 and a hidden brass hare statue. The show blends comedy, horror, and plot twists. The episode we watched, "The Devil of Christmas," is a Christmas special and the first episode of the third series, aired on December 27, 2016. Directed by Graeme Harper and written by Pemberton and Shearsmith, it took heavy inspiration from 1970s anthology programs such as Beasts (see episode 27 and 44 a and b), and Tales of the Unexpected (listen to episode 29 for more details), filmed at Studio D in the BBC Elstree Centre with rented 1970s costumes and props, the production used retrofitted 1970s cameras and lighting. This approach differed from the usual single-camera setup of the series. Producer Adam Tandy noted the blend of heritage and modern technology, while Shearsmith remarked "it looks shit, but it's brilliant". Graeme Harper, the episode's director, is well-known for his work on Doctor Who, being the only person to direct both the original and revived series. Harper's direction was widely acclaimed, with Peter Davison praising him as the best director he worked with on Doctor Who. The episode featured Rula Lenska, born Roza Maria Leopoldyna Lubienski, who has appeared in Special Branch, Minder, Boon, The Detectives, Footballers' Wives, To the Manor Born, One Foot in the Grave, Casualty, Space: 1999, Return of the Saint, Robin of Sherwood, Doctors, and EastEnders, where she played Frank Butcher's girlfriend, Krystle, in a 2002 Costa del Sol special. In the 1970s, she was shortlisted for the role of companion Jo Grant in Doctor Who and later appeared in Resurrection of the Daleks. She starred as Mrs. Peacock in series 2 of Cluedo and appeared with John Inman in the series Take a Letter, Mr. Jones. In 2009, Lenska joined the cast of Coronation Street as Claudia Colby, an old friend of Audrey Roberts. She left in May 2011 to join the Calendar Girls tour. Lenska was married to actors Brian Deacon and Dennis Waterman, with both marriages ending in divorce. She appeared in commercials for Alberto VO5 in the US during the late 1970s, becoming a running joke on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. Her work with the London Gay Men's Chorus led to her participation in the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother in 2006, where she made headlines for a role-play task with George Galloway. Since today's topic was a last-minute change to our schedule, we didn't have much time to research Steve and Reece thoroughly. I'm sorry we don't have more to share about them, but they seem like really nice guys. Both, along with the other two members of the League of Gentlemen, consistently create content that we pretty much universally like, if not love. (Ross is speaking for himself here, but I think Jon and James would agree.) This episode also features the voice of Sir Derek Jacobi, Professor Yana himself!!!!. Due to time constraints, our research for this episode was limited. We'll need to cover another project featuring Derek so we can properly explore the life and work of this wonderful actor. If you have any suggestions, please tweet us @GeneralWitch1. In May 2024, it was announced that Pemberton and Shearsmith had adapted the series into a West End stage play, Inside No. 9 Stage/Fright. They will perform in the production, premiering in January 2025 at Wyndham's Theatre, London. (Ross and his wife have tickets to go in April!)
