Today on the show we have Emmanuel Oberg. Emmanuel is a screenwriter, author and script consultant with more than twenty years of experience in the Film and TV industry. After selling his first project to Warner Bros as a co-writer, he went on to be commissioned by StudioCanal and Gold Circle before writing solo for Working Title / Universal and Film4.He has also designed an internationally acclaimed 3-day Advanced Development Workshop - based on the Story-Type Method® - which he delivers with passion to filmmakers all over the world. Emmanuel lives in the UK with his wife and their two daughters. His film agent is Rachel Holroyd at Casarotto in London. He is also the writer of Screenwriting Unchained: Reclaim Your Creative Freedom and Master Story Structure (With The Story-Type Method). In Screenwriting Unchained, Emmanuel Oberg busts many myths and sets out an innovative methodThis practical, no-nonsense guide leaves behind one-size-fits-all story theories and offers a modern approach to story structure, making it a precious resource for anyone involved creatively in the Film and TV industry (or aspiring to be): writers, directors, producers, development execs, showrunners and, more generally, storytellers keen to reach a wide audience at home and abroad.Having identified three main story-types - plot-led, character-led, theme-led - Oberg reveals in a clear, conversational style how each of these impacts on the structure of any screenplay, and how we can use a single set of tools to develop any movie, from an independent crossover to a studio blockbuster. This leads to a powerful yet flexible way to handle the script development process: the Story-Type Method®. A new framework that doesn't tell you what to write and when, but focuses instead on why some tools and principles have stood the test of time and how to use them in the 21st century.According to readers (see reviews below), Oberg's new approach is a game-changer.Here are some of the easy-to-understand concepts explored in Screenwriting Unchained that will help you improve any screenplay:How to identify the story-type of your project to make its development faster, easier and solve most story structure problems. How to leave behind the prescriptive, logistical three-act structure based on page numbers or minutes and replace it with a flexible, dramatic three-act structure that will help you design a rock-solid screenplay. How focusing on emotion, character development and managing information will allow you to go beyond the "protagonist-goal-obstacles-conflict" basic chain of drama. How to use the fractal aspect of structure to design not only the whole story but also its parts in order to avoid the dreaded "sagging middle" syndrome and breathe new life into your script. How to clarify what's at stake and increase your chances of getting the project made with a new take on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. How to use subgoals to Sequence the Action and psychological/emotional steps to Sequence the Evolution of your characters. How to keep the audience engaged using tools like dramatic irony, surprise, mystery, and suspense, adding a third dimension to your story. How to master these tools and principles in scenes through practical exercises before using them in a short film, a feature film, a TV episode or a whole series following hands-on tips and advice. How to design an attention-grabbing opening and a satisfying ending. How to deal with hybrids and exceptions, as story structure isn't about forcing all narratives into a single formulaic paradigm. The Rewrite Stuff: 12 Ways to a Stronger Screenplay, how to approach a new draft creatively and efficiently. How to make the difference between selling documents - used to raise development or production finance - and story design tools.Once you've developed a killer script, how to best pitch your project according to its story-type and get enthusiastic partners on board....and much, much more!Using many case studies including films as diverse as Gravity, Silver Linings Playbook, Crash, Billy Elliot, The Intouchables, Birdman, Alien, Groundhog Day, Misery, Edge of Tomorrow, The Secret in Their Eyes, Cloud Atlas, L.A. Confidential and The Lives of Others, Screenwriting Unchainedwill transform the way you write, read, pitch, design, assess and develop screenplays.Enjoy my conversation with Emmanuel Oberg.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

#496 Julia Sawalha's Well - Richard has great news about his (pre-breakfast) weight (which may no longer be true by time of broadcast). And in another attempt to get some closure for his romantic past, his guest is fantastic actress and ex-partner, Julia Sawalha. They talk about the impact of Press Gang and the gruelling audition process, working with Rik Mayall and Michael Palin (not at the same time), the process by which Absolutely Fabulous developed and brilliant casting that led to its success and how Julia won Stars in Their Eyes after zero sleep thanks to a Coronation Street actress throwing chairs around. There may be some mention of the relationship, the embarrassment of watching Fist of Fun with Richard's dad, Rich and Julia's shared spirit guide, the extraordinary nicknames of her former partners (including Richard's), some controversy and disagreement about how they broke up and the drunken fights and near death experiences of the Time Gentlemen Please cast. Plus an amazing ghost story and the surprising recasting of a movie sequel. This really has everything. In this passage we will see the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, in other words Jesus says He is equal with God and is God and this puts the Pharisee's over the edge. They wanted to kill Him for healing on the Sabbath, but now they try all the harder to find a way to kill him because in THEIR EYES, Jesus has blasphemed against God, but it is really about them and their power and their authority being threatened. Jesus tells us He can work on the Sabbath just as HIS Father does, not our Father, but HIS, which says to the Pharisee's, He is just like His Father. He tells them He does whatever the Father does, He knows all things just as God does, He will give life (eternal life) to whomever He wants to, that He deserves Honor just as the Father does and lastly that He is the only way to eternal life. For all those who say that Jesus never said He was God, they did not read either this section of scripture or many others, or they are just plain liars and deceivers. Jesus is God, He always has been, and always will be.Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” -John 8:32 Our mission is to spread the gospel and to go to the least of these with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ; We reach out to those the World has forgotten. hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.nethttps://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en His Love Ministries on Itunes Don't go for all the gusto you can get, go for all the God (Jesus Christ) you can get. There has been something on my mind for quite a while, and I realized the only way I'm going to get the answers that I need is to ask you. Hi Neighbor, In this episode of Anchors of Encouragement, I talk about the ONE episode that has outpaced all the others. It's Episode 17, Struggling Adoptive Parents? 3 Ways to Restore the Sparkle in Their Eyes. This episode has been the top downloaded episode every month, and I'm not sure why. I have some ideas, but I don't know with certainty why this episode is resonating with so many listeners. That's why I need your help and I'll tell you how you can help me in the Daily Doable. The reason I'm asking for feedback is because it will help me to produce more content that will encourage you. This feedback is priceless for me because as I've said many times on this podcast, the goal of this is to be an anchor of encouragement for adoptive parents. I want to thank you in advance for helping me understand what it is about Episode 17 that has spoken to so many of you. Hope and Healing are on the way. Your Neighbor, Tim Daily Doable: 1. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Josie Cotton, an American singer, songwriter, and actress who began her career in the late 1970s. Josie talks about her latest album, "Day of the Gun", which will be released on May 2nd. She also mentions an album release party on May 4th at Los Angeles' Daddy Diamonds, where people can come and have fun while enjoying popcorn, an ice cream truck, and possibly balloons. She invites everyone to the party, saying that it will be a super-mindless celebration of life. Pipeman and Josie also discuss starting over and the difficulties that come with it. Josie suggests that it would be better to fix what we have rather than completely clearing the decks. Pipeman agrees and points out that starting over would require a lot of work, and people have already done the legwork to get to this point. Josie tells listeners how they can connect with her on social media and where they can find her album. She is reachable on Instagram and Facebook as Josie Cotton Official and Josie Cotton, respectively. The album will be available on all platforms. She also talks about her record company, Kitten Robot, and their roster of artists, including the Velvet Starlings, Tombstones in Their Eyes, Hayley & the Crushers, and Mark Lanegan. In the second half of our episode, we look at The Secret in Their Eyes, a 2009 crime-drama that comes from director Juan José Campanella, which is far superior to the 2015 American remake. It's about a mystery that takes many years to solve, and features an ending that will literally have you gasping out loud, maybe all the way through the credits. COMING ATTRACTIONS: From South America we go to Europe, for a look at a couple of movies where peoples' minds and personalities are somehow morphed into something else. First up is Ingmar Bergman's Persona, from 1966, and then we go to 1970 and a film called Performance, directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, and featuring Mick Jagger and James Fox. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

In this second half of our episode, we take a look at 2018's Roma, a film set largely in Mexico City, despite the title. Roma has the distinction among Cuarón's films to be released on a very limited basis in theaters, and since then exclusively on Netflix. They've done this a couple of times (see also: The Irishman), but whether this turns into a larger model remains to be seen. COMING ATTRACTIONS: We continue south on our world tour with 1972's State of Siege, directed by Costa-Gavras, and The Secret in Their Eyes from 2009, directed by Juan José Campanella. This is a compelling pair of films with very different stories. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

This is the history part of our The Secret in Their Eyes episode and I'm joined by Dustin Molina. In this one, we talk about two things- one of the architects of the Dirty War in the 1970s in Argentina and also what the director of The Secret in Their Eyes did after making his huge hit. He made the most expensive Argentine movie of all time. By like a lot. Well, I'm sure it's about something really important. He also made a sitcom about a professional womanizer- I love how weird Juan José Campanella is.You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990, or NAGPRA, is supposed to curb the illegal possession of ancestral Native American remains and cultural items. But a year after it was passed by the U.S. federal government, a significant African burial ground in New York City was uncovered. And there was zero legislation in place for its protection. Dr. Rachel Watkins shares the story of the New York African Burial Ground—and what repatriation looks like for African American communities. This week I'm chatting to TV Camera Operator and photographer Lyndsey Harris. As a camera op, Lyndsey has worked on productions such as Coronation Street, Wimbledon and, in my opinion, the most exciting of all, Stars in Their Eyes. When she's not filming, Lyndsey captures the world around her with her camera and a sharp documentary eye, honing in on the moments we often miss.We talk about growing up as a mixed race child on an all white council estate in Birmingham, the film that was the catalyst for her pursuing a career in visuals, and being a woman in an industry historically dominated by white men. A large theme was the internal battle between her drive and passion and her, often debilitating, anxiety and imposter syndrome.Welcome to episode eight. May I introduce you to my dear friend, talented photographer and one of the oddaprents to our children, Lyndsey Harris,You can find Lyndsey's photography work on instagram @allfromthelefteye.Thank you so much for listening to ‘On the Irregular', please make sure you review and subscribe as it helps other listeners find us!Shownotes:Martin ParrAva DuVernayLynne RamsaySteve McQueenSupport the show

Thomas talks with Steve Klein. Steve talks about his bliss of helping people get over the hump to achieve anything through persistence and relentlessness, building the ability of being relentless in himself, how to crystalize our thinking and hone in on specifics, attracting that which we think about, transitioning into sales and writing the book, “Sell When You See the Whites of Their Eyes”, being inspired by making sure he put down exactly how he was successful, how to go about visualizing and actualizing your goals, how to make that first move, working with the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program in schools, and how others can find bliss through relentless living. In Fall 1919 the small town of Elaine, Arkansas erupted in violence. White mobs fearful that African American sharecroppers were organizing to fight for higher wages launched massive and violent assaults against the Black population. The death toll was in the hundreds. For this episode, I interviewed Lisa Hicks Gilbert, a descendant of two of the Elaine 12 and founder of the Descendants of Elaine. Hear how she found out about the massacre as an adult, how the consequences of the massacre still feed racial inequalities there today, and why it is important to make sure the right people are telling these stories. For more information: Elaine Massacre, 1919 Descendants of Elaine Revised edition of Grif Stockley's book "Blood in Their Eyes" with contributions from Dr. Brian Mitchell and Dr. Guy Lancaster.
