4 Big Myths about Getting into Luxury

Wouldn't it be great if there was a magic button you could push and all your dreams would come true? Or at least some of them?  I was reading Arnold Scharzenegger's recent memoir, Be Useful, and in it he says: “If there is one unavoidable truth in this world, it's that there is no substitute for putting in the work. People have tried to cut corners and skip steps in this process for as long as hard work has been hard.”  I love this, because it's so true. If you want to see the results, you have to put the work in. And, no, you can't cut corners. You can't skip steps if you want to create long-term success. It's one of the biggest myths we see in the wedding industry - and it can be dangerous for pros like you hoping to make it to the top. Try jumping three rungs on the ladder at one time and you'll likely fall flat on your face. For instance, you can't simply raise your rates by 30, 40, 50% at once because your work is great and a planner told you you should charge more…without putting in the work to create context and build value for that significantly higher price. But people do it all the time.  And fall flat on their faces. In this episode, Katy and I'll talk about several other myths about getting into luxury that prevent hard-working pros like you from making the move to elevate your business. We'll also discuss 8 proven steps that even Arnold would support on your journey to create success for your business and your life. Quick note if you're listening to this before February 7, 2024, our Sway Mastermind is officially open for enrollment. It's a complete level-up for wedding pros interested in either a) moving into the luxury market, or b) trying to book more consistently at higher prices if you're already on the monogrammed dance floor with affluent clients. Check out the link in IG profile or go straight to www.ideactionconsulting.com/mastermind for more information on the ridiculous VIP offer on the table through Feb. 1, including a lifetime discount on Ideaction services.

In the past few years there has been a RECORD amount of deaths in the sport of bodybuilding, but why? Icons like Shawn "Flexatron" Rhoden, Rich Piana, John Meadows and Dallas McCarver are just some of the many stars who have passed in the sport. Some blame steroids and Testosterone. Others blame food, drug use, high intensity exercise etc. But what if there is something else going on? New information and science tell of a deeper story, a more insidious one that spans FAR beyond the sport of body building. This information could have implications that send shock waves far beyond the world of sports and into the general health of our society. Hormones are the master key to the body, but so are a few other things... Lifting regularly and interested in learning more about lifting and coaching? Jesse shares his story of lifting, coaching, studying in the Barbell Academy, and ultimately deciding to not pursue coaching professionally and how the Barbell Academy helped him realize this.  CJ Gotcher talks to Jesse Mecham, Founder of YNAB and Barbell Academy student, about his experience going through the academy. Jesse came to lifting in his teens, reading a special edition of Muscle and Fitness magazine that covered Arnold Scharzenegger. His first experience with coaching came from someone warning about hurting his back from deadlifting, which scared him away from simple, hard, effective training for a while. He continued to lift. Eventually, he found Barbell Logic and a more effective approach to strength training. Jesse, someone who applies himself at anything he does and wants to do anything he does well, built a garage gym and invited others to lift with him. His role evolved into somewhat of a coaching role, and as this occurred he signed up for the Barbell Academy to help deepen his knowledge of programming and coaching.  As he completed the Academy, he learned a lot and was better able to program and cue his fellow lifters. He even arranged a Barbell Logic seminar at his gym, which not only helped improve his coaching but also helped the other lifters learn to better identify and fix their own errors. Despite this, he ultimately decided to NOT pursue becoming a professional barbell coach, with his other commitments of family and running a business.  In addition to this, CJ & Jesse talk about productivity and setting up the first coaching arrangement so you don’t grow resentful.  Many coaches coach their first lifters for free, and this makes sense, but you have to ensure you set up the situation so you receive value as well. Experience is valuable, but see if you can get the lifters to provide testimonials or other means of providing you value as you grow as a coach--and potentially grow a business.  Jesse & CJ also discuss balancing your natural tendencies as a coach. Some coaches tend to be too timid and need to work on assertiveness, confidence, and being loud. Others, however, may insert themselves readily and easily and need to not overcue.  They finish talking about being relentless about what you care about: spend the time, effort, and money where you want to. This requires intentionality and planning. This means limiting and managing distractions, being honest about things that take up your time but don’t provide value, blocking off times for deep work and self-improvement and preventing distractions during these blocks.  This podcast will provide value wherever you are and show how the Barbell Academy can help, even if you never become a professional barbell coach. https://www.youneedabudget.com/  GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE! Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 219. I delivered a talk earlier today for the Houston Property Rights Association (April 28, 2017), “Property: What It Is and Isn't,” which sets out the framework for how to view property rights in general and then finally turns to intellectual property. The main talk lasted for about the first 30 minutes; the final hour is Q&A. My speech notes (unedited and raw) are below. Property: What It Is and Isn't   Stephan Kinsella Kinsella Law Group, Libertarian Papers, C4SIF.org   Houston Property Rights Association · April 28, 2017   Ï   When a Great Austrian thinker was asked, “What is Best in Life?” He answered: “To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.”   Okay, that was Arnold Scharzenegger as Conan. This recognizes that conflict always possible in human life There are only so many “things” to go around, and if multiple people want it, they can fight violently over it. There can be conflict, precisely because we do not live in a world of superabundance. Garden of Eden etc. we live in a world where conflict is possible Another way to put this: we live in a world of scarce resources Better called “rivalrous”   Let's turn to the ideas of another great Austrian thinker, Ludwig von Mises Praxeology: the logic of human action Structure of human action Humans use knowledge about the world to select, control and employ scarce resources (means of action) to change the future—to achieve ends Notice two crucial ingredients to successful human action: knowledge, and scarce resources/means. This is true of Crusoe alone on his island It is also true of man in society   In society there is another way to handle the problem of scarce resources Instead of conflict, we can develop usage or ownership rules, to permit scarce resources to be used peacefully, productively, cooperatively, and without conflict This is the origin and basis of “property”. Alone, a man wants to use a thing: he uses it: he controls it, possesses it. In society, there could be two people who want the same thing, but because it is scarce only one can use it. Usage rules emerge that specify an owner of a given contestable resource. We call this system “property rights” We sometimes call the objects themselves “property” That chair is my property When you use a resource to change the world, in addition to your hands, your body, it becomes an extension of yourself. It becomes identified with the user. “Part of” the user. We might say it is a feature, or characteristic, or an aspect, of the user—or a “property” of the user. My gun, my knife, my fishing net, are how I control the world. I rely on them as I rely on my hands and my eyes. Thus we refer to owned objects as “a property of” the owner. we say he has a “proprietary interest in” the object, he is the proprietor, the owner. He has a property right in that resource. Notice earlier: can say these resources are “characteristics” or “features” or properties of a person's identity. It would be odd to say “that chair is my characteristic” or “my feature”. Yet we are used to saying “that chair is my property” but what we mean is: a given person is the owner of that resource. A given person has a property right in that resource.   A system of property rights, or law, emerges, which determines owners of various resources. Who has a property right in this thing? Who owns it? “Property does not exist because there are laws, but laws exist because there is property.” — FrédéricBastiat This is true of all legal and political systems, even socialist What distinguishes libertarianism and free market, western systems is our property allocation rules. These are: self-ownership (body-ownership), plus:

We mentioned him on many episodes of Movie Heaven Movie Hell, so it's finally time we talk about one of our favourite directors, James Cameron. He started off working for Roger Corman, as an Art Director, on films like BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and GALAXY OF FEAR before jumping into the director's chair on PIRANHA PART 2: THE SPAWNING. That film was a trial by fire, but lead to James Cameron making THE TERMINATOR, a neo-noir thriller that made a superstar out of Arnold Schwarzenegger. His career has gone onto greater heights with each film he made until he reached TITANIC, which he won an oscar as Best Director. His output since then has slowed down, but with 4 sequels to AVATAR on the way, we will be seeing more of the self proclaimed "King of the World". The films under discussion are PIRANHA PART TWO: THE SPAWNING, THE ABYSS, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY and AVATAR. We dedicate this episode to the late Trevor Steedman, Private Wierzbowski in Aliens, who passed away in June 2016. Movie Heaven Movie Hell is a show where filmmakers Simon Aitken (BLOOD + ROSES, POST-ITS, MODERN LOVE) and Keith Eyles (FEAR VIEW, DRIVEN INSANE, CROSSED LINES) go through the A-Z of directors. Simon and Keith talk about their favourite and least favourite film from that director's body of work.
