Suffering can be the gateway to a deeper relationship with God.  For Jimmy Pena, it was a defining moment, that changed everything.  It was the beginning of a climb up his second mountain.  A lifelong Christian....his relationship with Jesus and his life purpose made a 180 degree pivot after a devastating diagnosis and health crisis.  At first it resulted in his questioning everything, re-working his life and heading down a new path.  But it wasn't easy.  I truly loved this conversation with a man who went from being a nationally known picture of health (literally) to  incapacitated, immobile, and struggling to survive. Jimmy Pena, working with the legendary Joe Weider, was one of the most published authorities on fitness, health and body building, including a best selling book, "Prayfit".  He coached some of Hollywood's most elite actors in preparation for movie roles..including Tyler Perry, Mario Lopez and LL Cool J.   That was his first mountain. His first chapter.  You'll hear about that on this episode, but more importantly you'll hear how a Batman Movie helped to flip the script and launch a trajectory of life long service in his powerful 2nd (current) chapter.  I've never met anyone more humble and more committed to living a life of service and committed to loving God.  His amazing life story of mountain tops and valleys is truly inspiriting.Enjoy getting to know Jimmy in this podcast...and dig deeper into the episode by checking out:His "Prayfit" website: https://www.prayfit.org/His latest Book: Finding Re2pite: When Faith & Fitness Meet Grace in SufferingAnd the amazing work of Joni Erickson Tada: https://joniandfriends.org/"Amazing Greats" is a library of interviews with highly successful people who have amazing career and life stories and who share how God has impacted their journey. The history of bodybuilding is a captivating journey that intertwines with the evolution of physical fitness, cultural perceptions of the human body, and the pursuit of perfection. From ancient civilizations to modern-day competitions, bodybuilding has undergone significant transformations, shaping and being shaped by society's ideals and values. The origins of bodybuilding can be traced back to ancient Greece, where athletes trained to achieve physical prowess for competitive events like the Olympic Games. Sculpted statues and artworks from this era depict muscular physiques, highlighting the admiration for the human form. However, it wasn't until the late 19th century that bodybuilding as a structured discipline began to emerge. Eugen Sandow, often referred to as the "Father of Modern Bodybuilding," rose to prominence in the late 1800s with his impressive physique and groundbreaking performances. Sandow's exhibitions showcased his sculpted muscles and athleticism, captivating audiences worldwide and popularizing the concept of physical culture. He emphasized the importance of strength, symmetry, and aesthetics, laying the foundation for modern bodybuilding. In the early 20th century, the golden age of bodybuilding dawned with the advent of organized competitions and the rise of iconic figures like Charles Atlas and John Grimek. These pioneers inspired countless individuals to pursue bodybuilding as a means of self-improvement and personal expression. However, it wasn't until the mid-20th century that bodybuilding truly exploded onto the mainstream scene. The emergence of Muscle Beach in California during the 1940s and 1950s provided a platform for bodybuilders to showcase their talents in outdoor gyms along the sunny shores of Venice Beach. This vibrant community of fitness enthusiasts, including legends like Steve Reeves and Reg Park, attracted attention from the media and sparked a cultural phenomenon. The 1960s witnessed the rise of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB), founded by bodybuilding icon Joe Weider. The IFBB established standardized rules and regulations for competitions, paving the way for the sport's global expansion. During this era, Arnold Schwarzenegger emerged as a dominant force, captivating audiences with his imposing physique and charismatic persona. Schwarzenegger's reign during the 1970s solidified bodybuilding's place in popular culture, inspiring millions to hit the gym and sculpt their bodies. Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, bodybuilding continued to evolve, with athletes pushing the boundaries of muscular development and conditioning. The introduction of new training techniques, nutritional strategies, and supplementation further fueled the sport's growth. Additionally, the emergence of women's bodybuilding and other divisions, such as physique and bikini, diversified the competitive landscape, attracting a more diverse array of athletes. Today, bodybuilding remains a global phenomenon, with competitions held in countries around the world and a dedicated community of enthusiasts spanning all ages and backgrounds. While the sport continues to face scrutiny and stereotypes, its enduring appeal lies in its ability to empower individuals to transform their bodies and minds through discipline, dedication, and hard work. As bodybuilding enters a new era, its rich history serves as a testament to the enduring pursuit of physical excellence and the relentless drive to push the limits of human potential.

Shadow Talk is a brand new podcast series that aims to answer the question: How can you be a better version of yourself? Dorian will be welcoming guests from across the world, to not only talk fitness and health, but how to mentally and spiritually improve oneself. Hosting guests from not only his competitive bodybuilding past, but also from his own journey to self improvement, Dorian will ask the questions that will allow you, the audience, to take away valuable and practice lessons you can apply to your own journey. Dorian's first guest is professional actor and bodybuilder Tom Platz.   Known worldwide as Golden Eagle or The Quadfather, Tom is considered the uncrowned Mr. Olympia 1981.  In 1965, Tom was just 10 years old when he began to train, his parents having bought him bodybuilding guru Joe Weider's guide to training along with a full set of equipment. One of the most infamous bodybuilders of the 1970s and 1980s, Platz appeared on the Mr. Olympia stage multiple times, competing against some of the greats such as ‘The Austrian Oak', Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chris Dickerson. Many will recognize Tom for his massive and shredded legs, which are still big even in his 60s. Despite never taking home a first-place title, Platz gave bodybuilding his all and many argue that he should have achieved better placings throughout his career. Notable contest placements include: 1986 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 11th 1985 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 7th 1984 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 9th 1982 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 6th 1981 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 3rd 1980 World Pro Championships – IFBB, Mr. Universe Tom is very well known for his extremely intensive training, where he would push himself hard and often to failure, much like Mike Mentzer and his Heavy Duty methods.  He stated that he never wanted to leave the gym knowing he could have done more, and when you think you are finished you actually have about 5 more reps in you. He is still heavily involved in the fitness industry, passing on his knowledge and training methods to younger generations. Inevitably these losers tell me I will. I storm off in a huff and swear off exercise forever. But at Starbody Health Spa they've fixed this. All you have to do is carry around a credit card and swipe it in the machine, probably talk to the guy in the computer room on an imbedded mic. He puts you in a cue of people who need similar help and he gets to you after a few minutes, setting the machine to the proper weight. Things were going great until the computer got possessed by the philandering owner's dead wife who is the sister of the computer tech. She started burning people with acid, exploding folks in the bathroom, killing people with fish, the whole thing. Long story short, it's all here in this tell all documentary. (I was Fred). Kris & David are guestless as we discuss the week-plus that was September 14th-21st, 1990. We start with the major news out of Dallas, where Kevin Von Erich revived World Class Championship Wrestling after Jerry Jarrett packed up and left town when Kevin accused him of embezzlement. We go over how and why all of that happened, Kevin's first two shows, why Jarrett was genius in doing what he did, and how nobody ever noticed some very obvious catalysts for the split. Although his knee injury caused him to have a total knee replacement and remove himself from competing completely, Matt will continue to share his fitness passion through seminars, book writing, fitness apparel and podcast. In Matt's first book, Training Lab, he spelled out the philosophy of “The HVIII,” and tried to capture the spirit of self-improvement through self-loathing.   On BiOptimizers' Awesome Health podcast I have the pleasure of bringing you some of the greatest contributors to the health, fitness and wellness world. And today's guest is a prime example: he is a world-renowned coach, former competitor and best-selling author. This man is an important guest for me as well; I wouldn't have a career in this industry if it weren't for him! In 1996 I first saw him speak and hired him as my coach a year later. Over the next 9 months with his coaching and guidance, I made the biggest transformation in my career. He helped me win a few national championships and compete at the Mr. Universe contest. I also spent time with him personally and saw his lifestyle as one of the world's premiere trainers, which inspired me to do the same thing. I'm so excited to have him on the BiOptimizers' Awesome Health podcast for episode 2, please join me in welcoming Scott Abel! More About Awesome Health with Scott Abel As someone who has coached over 400 titled champions at every level (including Olympic level), Scott Abel knows how to produce consistent results for his clients. He has a mind and a spirit for coaching and personal performance, physical as well as emotional, mental and spiritual. Unlike many coaches, he communicates with his clients at their level and in a way that is effective for them. Ultimately, Scott says coaching is about serving. When I asked how he has produced such remarkable results consistently, he explains there are two keys to doing so. The first is keeping his "horses" (his clients) thirsty. A lot of coaches want to lead their horses to water, but he believes his job is to keep his horse thirsty. So he was always looking for how his clients think, what they respond to, what is the best way to reach them and where is their self-esteem level. He also thinks the best of the best liked working with him because he always thought of himself as an athlete doing bodybuilding, not the bodybuilder everyone else saw him as. And by best of the best I mean people like Joe Gold, Bob Kennedy, Joe Weider, etc. As a coach he also looks at how to reach people, how to see and find their gifts, accentuate those without spending lots of time on their weaknesses. It's also about understanding what bodybuilding actually is (which most coaches don't understand to this day). It's about how to bring the person to their peak level at the right time at the right day, without a cookie cutter approach. Scott is known for many things, like the concept behind metabolic training and tenets of intervention training, etc. So I wanted to know how he has been able to continually innovate for four plus decades. He attributes much of it to his liberal arts education: they taught him HOW to learn, rather than what to learn. He has always been able to see the trend of what is next, rather than most coaches and trainers who look at what IS. He's been around since before females were actively competing in bodybuilding, which led to fitness competitions and then figure competitions and bikini competitions. He saw the trend of eating disorders and metabolic damage coming from that industry and his book, The Dangers of Dieting, was one of the ways he tried to do something about that. He soon realized that by participating in this industry he was part of the problem - the old adage if you aren't part of the solution you are part of the problem. In this particular instance he was trying to dissuade women from competing at all. Which of course begs the question: what was that experience like? What was it like for him to be at the top of the mountain, not like the view from that mountain and climb back down?  What was that journey like for him? Scott said he had come to a cross roads, he knew he was done with it. But this was before he had his own transformative experience, he realized he wasn't actualizing his talents and knew he was being lazy with the talents he was given. He was given a "booming message from beyond" that if he wasn't going to use his talents, then they would be taken from him. That was a wake up moment but also a personal awakening for him all around, the entire industry had changed and he had never liked the hard core end of it. He could see how cult-like it was becoming. He knew he couldn't be a part of that any longer, he hated that people thought they could only look their best by feeling their absolute worst. And that's not health, fitness or balance to him, nor something he wants to be associated with. Health, Fitness and Performance: Are They Different Or The Same? He explains it's important to understand most people look at someone's physique and base their level of health on how that person looks. So if someone has a six-pack others assume they are healthy. And that's not the case, and definitely not the case with most bodybuilding competitors today. He shares a quote that sums it up nicely: people compete with the spirit of fitness, but no concern at all for the fitness of spirit. However fitness is actually defined as the ability to meet the exigencies of everyday life with ease and plenty of energy to spare in case of emergencies, that includes psychic, mental, and emotional fitness. Because of that his programs are all about personal growth, the vehicle is just the training program and the diet. This applies to anyone in any industry: any activity should enhance personal growth, psychic maturity and things of that nature. Validation And Attention Vs. Self-Mastery and Purpose Today far too many people are concerned with things like validation and attention versus self-mastery, autonomy and purpose. Today's social media is a magnet for the first group, but his focus is on helping people who are concerned with the latter and he has maintained that focus for a few decades now. Diving into those few decades, we talk about a husband and wife he worked with and their incredible transformation. He summarizes it well with one of his "Abelisms": quality of mindset determines quality of behavior. If your behavior isn't consistent in the way you know it needs to be to get a certain result, then you have to address the quality of your mindset. That's why the right diet or the right training program won't fix you. Unfortunately the competitive bodybuilding world focuses on diet and training to the exclusion of mindset and mental health. Proper coaching shows you a person's mental patterns and where they get stuck, and when you see that you help them to get rid of their "stinkin' thinkin'" as he calls it. As their coach, you help them get on and stay on the path of right thinking, and right attitude. Then the right behavior follows and becomes a natural thing to do. This is when it's no longer a burden to exercise, train and eat in a certain way. An example of this is an exercise he does in a lot of his workshops. For one minute he rings a bell every 10 seconds and tells his participants NOT to think about elephants. What happens? They think of elephants! And that's exactly how people approach diet and exercise. If they struggle with cravings they are always thinking about that struggle. They are in battle mode, which doesn't work. He says you have to stop thinking about what you don't want, remove the emotions of it and move towards what you do want. He teaches people how to think that way. A Typical Day For Scott Abel: His Schedule and His Eating Because he is such a master at his craft and has been so prolific and successful for close to four decades, I wanted Scott to share what a typical day looks like for him. He gets up at 4am. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday works on emails right away for 45 minutes. Then he eats breakfast and has coffee before going to the gym. On Thursday he has coffee first, brings it downstairs with him. His clients come first so he does his work with them, and then he spends time on whatever other projects he has. Next he goes to the gym, comes back, showers and has a full Inbox again which he addresses. After that he does either a podcast or a video before shutting down about 3pm. In terms of his food intake, he explains he has been on the cycle diet for 30 years. He has a housekeeper who cooks for him. She makes egg whites and oatmeal or oat bran for breakfast. And for about half the year he has a choice of grits too, because he has a client who lives in the south and sends him grits! Meal 2 is almonds with as much fruit as he can stomach. Meal 3 is any other kind of nut, with a glass of tomato juice. Meal 4 is a dinner of protein, starch and fibrous carbs. Specifically on Monday and Tuesday it is chicken breast with asparagus and brown rice. Wednesday is tuna with grilled peppers and brown rice. Thursday is chicken instead of the tuna, with grilled peppers and brown rice. Friday and Saturday is tuna, coleslaw and baked potato with lots of extra virgin olive oil. Just before bed, literally a few minutes right before bed, he will have a cup of cottage cheese. He does so because it's great for neurotransmitters, and it invites sleep. On Sunday he has his refeed day (or "cheat day"), this is the day when anything goes! You'll hear what he likes to have on his refeed days, especially during football season. You'll also hear why this cycle is so important, how you can and retrain your metabolism, whether metabolic damage can be fixed and SO many other important and enlightening topics on this show. On this episode of The Sofa King Podcast, we get pumped and talk about one of the all-time greats of cinema, athletics, action, cigars, and politics: Arnold Schwarzenegger. This icon was born in 1947 (yes, he’s that old now!) in Austria, and his father was a drunken, abusive police chief who was once a paramilitary Nazi who was wounded in the Battle of Stalingrad. Let that sit with you for a minute. Living in a poor, broken home, Arnold turned to the cinema as an escape and fell in love with Hercules movies. This lead to him starting to body build as a teen, and by the time he was 18 and in the army, he was already winning big body building competitions. He took second place at his first Mr. Universe, and in doing so, he met some key people in the weight lifting game and was able to move out of his house and in with a family in London. Training here, he became the youngest winner of Mr. Universe and ultimately was able to move to California, where he trained with the legendary Joe Weider at Gold’s Gym and went on to win competition after competition. This was just a stepping stone in his career path, however, since he also decided to conquer movies. He starred in a truly horrible movie called Hercules in New York. (Surprisingly, it’s about the ancient Greek demigod. In New York. Go figure.) From there, he landed a Golden Globe for a roll opposite Sally Field, and he did a string of small roles leading up to his time as Conan the Barbarian in 1982. Just two years later, he starred in The Terminator, and the rest was history. He went on to make some of the most beloved action films of the 80s and 90s, and Arnold Schwarzenegger became a global household name. So what led to Arnold Schwarzenegger entering politics? What was his relationship to the famous political Kennedy family? Why do some people think he murdered a prominent British politician named Lord Lucan in the 1970s? Did he really beat people up for the mob with a lead pipe covered in plastic wrap? How did he end up running the notoriously Democratic state of California while he is a Republican? What was the story with his affair and illegitimate child? What does this have to do with Bakersfield (home of the Fight Club Studios)?

If you have the ambitious dream of making a good living from your bodybuilding efforts in addition to doing what you love, you must create clear vision and an effective plan-of-attack the very first day of your journey (or, as close to that first day as possible). Investing the time to listen to this podcast can prevent years of frustration, confusion, squandered opportunities, and eventual failure. Success leaves clues. During this interview, bodybuilding legend Shawn Ray generously shares a roadmap to success in the "business of bodybuilding." The IFBB Hall of Fame Bodybuilder created many different ways to earn a great living from his passion for bodybuilding over the years. Far more than just the prize money he was awarded for doing well in contests. On and off the competitive stage, Ray is a dedicated and professional businessman. He's been creating win-win situations for his fans, promoters, business owners, and himself since he was a teenager. And, almost 15 years after retiring from competition, the "hustle" and drive hasn't slowed down one bit. Some might argue that he's now putting his efforts into overdrive as he approaches his 50th birthday in a few months. Ray reveals the mindset you'll need to succeed in business and the challenges you'll need to conquer to actually make that happen. And who would have better insight than Shawn Ray? The man worked closely with the godfather of the bodybuilding, Joe Weider, for years. He now does the very same with Steve Blechman, the new business titan of bodybuilding. During this podcast, Ray outlines specific examples of what you'll need to do--and what you'll need to avoid. Shawn candidly tells you who from the current crop of young bodybuilders are doing things right--and who needs to do things differently.

The Empower Hour with your host Kyle Brown. Today, we have an alpha male group of friends talking “AWAKEN YOUR ALPHA” here whose stories will empower you to take your life to the next level. First, I have my new friend, star of American Gladiators and Bodybuilding Legend MIKE O’HEARN. Then, my friend alpha performance coach ADAM LEWIS WALKER will call in from across the pond in London to give you his “TOP 5 WAYS TO AWAKEN YOUR ALPHA.” Lastly, I’ll be giving you your weekly challenge to help you live the life you want, the way you want it. He’s the only guy to be selected for both the bodybuilding hall of fame and the martial arts hall of fame. Mike holds 4 Natural Mr. Universe titles and was voted one of the 12 greatest physiques of all time by the fitness industry.  Mike has graced the cover of over 500 magazines and is 7-Time Fitness Male Model of the Year. Please welcome my new friend MIKE O’HEARN!   So most of us spent our childhood watching super hero cartoons on Saturday mornings in our Superman pajamas eating a big bowl of cereal. Yet you decided to not only play the role of a super hero on American Gladiators but live the life as a super hero 24/7/365. What got you started on your fitness journey? “10 kids growing up 5 boys 5 girls. I was the youngest. My sister won Ms. Seattle. Other one won Washington State Karate championships. I had to get tougher as a kid because I had my sisters beating me up not just my brothers.” Listen to hear Mike tell us about meeting Joe Weider and how he took him under his wing. “I not only want to be the best but I want to be the best when I’m at my worst.” “I get to travel around the world with a Siberian husky named Stryker. I am a dog person, a country boy, she’s my best friend. She’s not only a travel companion but she is also a hospice dog. I take Stryker and Elvis to be with people at the end of their lives.”  You are not only a champion bodybuilder but more of a hybrid as you train like and have compete as a power lifter. How would you describe the difference in training between bodybuilding and powerlifting?  Follow Mike’s epic journey through instagram and facebook @mikeohearn  My next guest is here to give you his “Top 5 Ways To AWAKEN YOUR ALPHA.”  Please welcome my friend Adam Lewis Walker. Listen to hear Adam’s TOP 5 WAYS TO AWAKEN YOUR ALPHA “What is your ideal day? Start with that in mind. For me, it is start with exercise then be non-location based.” “My show Awaken Your Alpha is about bringing on the world’s biggest Alphas.” “It all comes back to being authentic and being yourself. If you are going into a business that is not your true passion, you are going to be in a place you are not happy.” “When it comes to finding your own magic, what are you good at, what do you love doing, and what do you get phenomenal results doing? I believe everyone is phenomenal at something. Delegate the stuff you are competent at to someone else.” “For $100 a week, you can get a virtual assistant to take care of things you are not phenomenal doing.” “What gets you up in the morning to pursue your dreams. For people with family, this is easy. The reason is to provide a better life for your family. But no matter what hurdle gets in your way, if $ is your only why you may stop. But if your why is strong you will run through walls and you aren’t going to run out of motivation.” “You can’t be a lone wolf in todays day and age. That’s not alpha. Everyone needs help. When you get to a place of not what can I get but what can I give, you change your life tremendously.” “People will remember you for something, whether good or bad. Do you gage success by how much money you have or how many people you impacted.” “Get specific on your ideal life. Your ideal day. Your ideal morning. Then work backwards.” “You do not need permission to take it to the next level.”
