EP296 - Beyond the Money, What Wealth Really Means for MSP Business Owners with Ian Luckett

In this episode of The IT Experts Podcast, I take a step back from the usual growth tactics and invite you into a conversation about what wealth really means for MSP owners. We are past the midpoint of 2026, and rather than waiting until year end to reflect, I wanted to offer a checkup from the neck up right now, while there is still time to make the second half count.     I talk through the MSP journey many of us recognise. You start in survive, move into drive, then into thrive, and eventually reach arrive, the point where the business works for you rather than the other way round. Along that journey, it is easy to lose sight of your original why. You get caught up in the grind, in the day to day running of the business, and somewhere along the line the reason you started fades into the background. This episode is my attempt to help you reconnect with it, because understanding what wealth really means to you personally changes everything about how you build and run your MSP.     I share why Stuart and I built The MSP Growth Hub the way we did. Our own why is rooted in family, in supporting people with additional needs, and in using the business as an enabler for something much bigger than turnover or profit margin. That is the thread that runs through this episode. Profit should be treated as fuel for your vision, not the end goal itself. When you start asking what wealth really means beyond the numbers on a balance sheet, you open the door to a much richer definition of success, one that includes freedom, fulfilment, relationships, and the life you actually want to live outside the business.     I cover the danger of decisions driven by fear rather than by vision and values, and how burnout, stress, and anxiety often show up when purpose has quietly disappeared from the picture. I share a simple challenge you can do right now, wherever you are reading or listening from. Revisit your original why. Write down how it has evolved. Bring your team into that conversation. I mention two books that have shaped my own thinking recently, Simon Sinek's Start With Why and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Be Useful, both of which pushed me to think bigger about the supported living homes I want to help build.     We also explore the people you surround yourself with. You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with, so if you want a bigger vision for your business and your life, it pays to move towards people who inspire and challenge you rather than those who keep you small. I talk about building reflection into your leadership rhythm, measuring how far you have come rather than only how far you have left to go, and leading with transparency even when others doubt what you are trying to achieve.     Ultimately, this episode is an invitation to define what wealth really means to you, in your own words, on your own terms. It might mean more time with family, more freedom to choose how you spend your Fridays, or the ability to give back to your community in a meaningful way. Whatever it looks like for you, the message stays the same. Profit is your fuel. It is not the finish line.     I hope this gives you space to reflect and reconnect with your own purpose as an MSP owner.    Make sure to check out our Ultimate MSP Growth Guide, a free guide that walks you through a proven process to take your MSP from stuck to scalable, without working even more hours. It's 44 pages rammed with advice, insights and inspiration to help you decide what support is available to you now if you want to grow and scale your business. By Stan Hustad There are times in life when you step away for a bit—whether by design or by necessity—and when you return, you see things differently. That happened to me. After a stretch of what I'll call "downtime, overtime, and out-of-time," I'm back behind the microphone with a fresh installment of Inconvenient Ideas. And it felt only right to begin with a simple—but unsettling—question: What if everything we think we know… might be wrong? Now, that's not a comfortable thought. But then again, the best ideas rarely are. The Power—and Problem—of Inconvenient Ideas I've come to believe something that may surprise you: The most valuable ideas are often the most inconvenient. They interrupt our assumptions. They challenge our comfort zones. They force us to rethink what we thought was settled. And right now, we're living in one of those moments—where everything is shifting. AI: Not a Tool… a Tidal Wave Let me begin with a confession. When I first started talking about artificial intelligence, I said, "Not much will change… but some things will." Well… I was wrong. A lot is going to change. In fact, it already is. I recently faced a complex business problem with my team—one that might have taken us an entire day (or more) to solve. Instead, I turned to my AI assistant. Within minutes, we had: - Research - Contacts - A workable solution Problem solved in five minutes. That's not evolution. That's disruption. The Four A's of AI Here's how I now understand AI—through what I call the Four A's: Aggregation – It gathers knowledge from everywhere Amplification – It expands and clarifies ideas Acceleration – It moves faster than any human workflow Artistry – It creates visuals, language, and expression with remarkable skill That combination is powerful—and potentially dangerous if ignored. Those who learn to use AI will surge ahead. Those who don't… may fall behind quickly. The Rise of the Creator Capitalist You must learn to create value in a way that also creates income. Creativity is no longer optional. Expression is now economic. And everyone is in the marketplace. So Here's the Big Question: What's Your Superpower? What is your superpower? What do you do exceptionally well? What could you become known for? What category could you own? Noise vs. Signal: Why Expression Matters More Than Ever A lot of traditional communication is losing its power. Blogs without emotion are ignored. Words without energy are forgotten. Ideas without expression are invisible. You don't just need to say something. You need to move something. A World of Big Sticks and Bigger Decisions Power matters. Not just words. Not just intentions. But the ability to act—and create outcomes. A Personal Reflection: What Does It Mean to Be Useful? Be useful. Ask yourself—what can I do that is useful to others? That's where real value begins. The Cowboy Spirit and the Future of Storytelling We're building something new: A broadcasting collective A publishing platform A performing network All rooted in one idea: Help people live well… and flourish. If your business does not help people flourish—it's probably a wreck. Things to Remember - The most valuable ideas are often inconvenient - AI is transformational - Your superpower is your leverage - Expression matters - Power creates outcomes Things to Share - The Four A's of AI - Discovering your superpower - Thinking like an entrepreneur - Being useful Things to Take Note Of (and Act Upon) - Identify your superpower - Use AI daily - Upgrade communication - Be useful every day A Final Thought—and an Invitation Inconvenient times create uncommon people. Don't just survive—step into it. Be useful. Be powerful. Be world class.

In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent is joined by entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist Jeremy Middleton. Jeremy is best known as one of the early backers of HomeServe, a business that grew from a struggling plumbing service into a FTSE-100 company before its eventual acquisition. Today he leads Middleton Enterprises, investing in profitable founder-led businesses and helping them scale from around £500k profit to £5m and beyond. This episode explores the real lessons behind scaling successfully: pivoting business models, building predictable revenue, hiring the right people and making smart funding decisions. As always, our discussion breaks down into three parts. First, we explore Jeremy's journey with HomeServe and the lessons from building and scaling the business. Second, we dig into the real challenges founders face when scaling including hiring the right people, building predictable revenue and why one of the most important early hires is a strong Finance Director. And third, we finish with some quickfire questions to wrap things up. One standout message from the discussion is this: a small share of a big business is far better than a big share of a small one. On Thanksgiving Eve—one of the most meaningful, reflective, and even quietly complicated days on the American calendar—veteran broadcaster and business-performance coach Stan Hustad steps into the "How to Be Useful" virtual studio with a simple story and a profound invitation: Let this Thanksgiving Eve be different. Let it be useful, grateful, and transformational. In a warm and deeply human 10-minute reflection, Stan guides listeners through a practice he began years ago—a practice he now teaches in his performance coaching and encourages leaders everywhere to adopt:  Spend the Wednesday before Thanksgiving calling people who have been good to you. Not to pitch. Not to ask for anything. Simply to say, "I am thankful for you." A Gentle Story with Real-World Impact In this Thanksgiving message, Stan shares how he spent the morning calling doctors who saved his life, friends who walked with him through adversity, and people who have simply been part of his journey. Their responses ranged from warmth to surprise to heartfelt emotion. Some quietly admitted they hadn't heard anyone say "I'm thankful for you" in a long time. Stan also speaks with honesty about the bittersweet nature of Thanksgiving Eve. Law enforcement officers have shared with him that it can be one of the most dangerous nights of the year—especially for college students who return home and gather with friends. So he offers a compassionate reminder: Pray for young people tonight. Pray for good choices, safe travels, and a Thanksgiving Day unmarred by tragedy. From there, the message turns to gratitude, humility, and the importance of keeping Thanksgiving sacred—a holiday "they can't steal," as Stan says. While Black Friday may try its best to reshape the meaning of the week, Thanksgiving itself remains stubbornly simple, beautifully human, and deeply needed. A Coaching Moment for Leaders and Entrepreneurs Stan makes a compelling case that gratitude is a business strategy—perhaps one of the most undervalued, underused, and underappreciated tools available to leaders today. A grateful leader is rarely a fearful leader. A grateful organization is rarely a toxic one. A grateful business is more human, more productive, and more resilient. His invitation is as practical as it is personal: Make thankfulness part of the business plan. Let your people know they matter more than your metrics. Tell colleagues and customers "I appreciate you" without attaching a sale or an agenda. Make gratitude a cultural habit, not a seasonal gesture. Things to Remember • Gratitude is one of the most powerful performance tools in life and business. • A simple Thanksgiving Eve phone call can touch a life deeply. • College students and young adults need our prayers, protection, and encouragement tonight. • Being useful—truly useful—is at the heart of living well. • Leadership grounded in gratitude is leadership that endures. Things to Share • Share "I appreciate you" freely and sincerely. • Share kindness without an agenda. • Share the story of Thanksgiving Eve calls with your family, team, or organization. • Share gratitude as a cultural value, not a holiday accessory. Things to Take Note Of & Take Action On • Tonight: Consider calling two or three people who have blessed your life. • This weekend: Slow down and reflect on the year—not just the work, but the people. • This season: Make gratitude a strategic part of your leadership and business practice. • This coming year: As Stan says about 2026, "Pick up a few more sticks… make a little more money… have a little more fun… and do a little more blessing." A Final Word of Blessing From the "How to Be Useful" Studio at What It Takes Radio, Stan closes with a message of warmth, gratitude, and purpose: "Best and blessings… and give thanks. Right now and every day." May this Thanksgiving be a turning point toward deeper gratitude, stronger relationships, and a renewed commitment to being useful—in life, in business, and in the lives of others. If you need encouragement, guidance, or a companion for the journey, Stan welcomes you to reach out: Stan@witradio.net Happy Thanksgiving from the Do It Right Collective. Blessings on you and all those you love.

... And I think you need to know the word too. So let's take an informative and maybe helpful 15 minutes to give you a new challenge... And a new opportunity because the world is now full of many many challenges and many opportunities... Let's check out the big word and see if we can do something that will make an impact in life and business. .... The following is what my robot decided to write about the program. The Power of Being Useful: How to Make an Impact in Life and Business In a fast-moving world where competition is fierce and expectations are rising, one simple but powerful question can define your success: How useful are you? Whether in business, relationships, or personal growth, usefulness is the key driver of impact and income. This idea, explored in a recent radio segment by Stan Hustad, offers a compelling framework for success in 2025 and beyond. The Key to Success: Be Useful Stan Hustad's discussion stems from a lesson he learned from his daughter Megan, who years ago set out to establish herself in the publishing industry in New York City. Despite coming from a Midwest state school and facing biases from the elite East Coast circles, she succeeded—not because of privilege or luck, but because she proved her worth by being useful. Her book, How to Be Useful, highlights a critical truth: success doesn't come from charm, intelligence, or even connections alone; it comes from offering value that people need. A striking parallel can be drawn with Elon Musk, a man who built his fortune and influence not by chasing money but by seeking ways to be useful. Whether with PayPal, SpaceX, or Tesla, Musk identified areas where he and his businesses could provide solutions, making them indispensable in their respective industries. His approach reinforces an essential lesson: usefulness leads to impact, and impact drives income. Key Takeaways for Life and Business • Success Is About Making a Difference – Being useful means solving problems, offering solutions, and improving the lives of others. The greater your impact, the greater your rewards. • Impact Drives Income – If you want to thrive financially, focus on how much value you bring to others. Money follows impact. • Simplicity and Innovation Matter – The best solutions are often simple but highly effective. Identify areas where you can streamline processes, create better experiences, or provide essential services. • Speed and Adaptability Are Crucial – The pace of work and communication is increasing. To remain relevant, you must be quick, adaptable, and continuously improving. • Differentiate Yourself Through Value – It's not enough to just be different; you must offer something uniquely valuable that makes a real impact. Final Thoughts: A Challenge for 2025 As we navigate a rapidly changing world, the ability to be useful is more important than ever. Those who succeed will not be those who sit back and wait for opportunities; they will be the ones who proactively create value, solve real-world problems, and make a meaningful difference. So here's the challenge: • How can you be more useful in your current job, business, or community? • What unique skills, insights, or talents do you have that can create an impact? • How can you turn usefulness into a source of income and long-term success? If you're ready to explore these ideas further, Stan Hustad is open to helping entrepreneurs, business leaders, and individuals unlock their potential. Reach out at stanhustad@gmail.com and start your journey toward making a real impact in 2025. The year is not just about survival—it's about thriving. Be useful, make an impact, and watch how success follows. Are you ready?

How do you plan to step into this year with confidence and faith? The new year often brings a whirlwind of resolutions and lofty goals. Perhaps you've felt that familiar pull—“I'm going to do more of this,” “I'll cut back on that,” or “This year, I'll completely turn things around.” But maybe that's not where you are right now. Maybe, instead of a burst of motivation, you feel unmotivated, stuck, or unsure. What if what you're missing isn't motivation, but faith? Faith that God is with you. Faith that He has a plan. Faith that, in Him, you can walk with a new sense of purpose. Faith is confidence. And if you feel like you're lacking confidence, let this be an invitation to lean into Him. Here are a few ways to grow in confidence this year—because as your confidence in God grows, so does your faith.   1. Make Time for Intentional Moments with the Lord Husbands, as spiritual leaders of your home, you're called to guide—not perfectly, but faithfully. Start small. Read a Bible verse to your children before bed, or take a moment to pray with your family. When you open your Bible, ask God to speak to your heart: “Lord, what do You want me to learn? Reveal Yourself to me.” These simple steps will deepen your relationship with God, building faith and intimacy with Him.   2. Embrace Risks with Courage Wives, stepping into the unknown—whether in your marriage or personal growth—can feel daunting. But just as thrill-seekers find exhilaration in challenges like skydiving or bungee jumping, there's a unique joy in stepping out in faith, even in intimate parts of your marriage. Confidence begins with trust—both in God and in the one He's placed by your side.   3. Be Useful for God's Kingdom In Revelation 3, we're reminded that God desires us to be useful—not lukewarm. Whether it's the hot water for cleansing or cold water for refreshing, each has purpose. Empty nesters, your wisdom and experience are invaluable. There's a generation that needs your guidance and your prayers. Step boldly into the role God has for you.   4. Trust in His Faithfulness No matter what you face, trust that God is working for your good. His love is steadfast, His discipline is kind, and His plans are perfect. Even in moments of waiting or trial, you can have confidence that He will see you through.     5. Look to Biblical Role Models Scripture is filled with examples of faith under pressure. Think of Mordecai's courage, Esther's boldness, Peter's willingness to step out onto the waves, and Paul's unwavering hope even in chains. Their lives remind us that faith often requires action—and that God uses those who trust Him to do extraordinary things.   This year, don't wait for the perfect moment to begin. Take a step, even a small one, toward the place you feel God is calling you. A moving ship is easier to steer than one that's standing still. We're here for you, cheering you on and praying for God to fill you with confidence—confidence that will not only transform your life but ripple out to bless your family, your community, and the Kingdom. God delights in you. Let this truth guide you as you step boldly into what He has prepared for you this year. God bless you!   Love,    Belah & Team   PS - If you want to grow in discipleship and transform your relationship with God (and in turn your marriage), we would love to chat with you: delightym.com/cc PPS - Here is a testimonial from a recent graduate: "I have grown in my time with God, my intense desire to understand the Word and trust God.  I have also grown in my openness and vulnerability with my wife, I was honestly intimidated by having open conversations with her about how I felt."

Seven Tools for Life: Commitment to Giving Back

Arnold Schwarzenegger's book "Be Useful" presents seven life tools, with the seventh being a commitment to giving back. He challenges the idea of a "self-made man," emphasizing that everyone benefits from the support of others and has a responsibility to give back. Inspired by his father-in-law Sargent Shriver's speech, he advocates for breaking the mirrors of self-absorption and focusing on helping others. This mindset, backed by scientific studies, leads to greater happiness and contentment. Giving back can take many forms, from volunteering to mentoring, and role models like Dolly Parton and Warren Buffet exemplify its impact. Ultimately, Schwarzenegger argues that true fulfillment comes from contributing to others' well-being, which in turn enhances one's own life. Welcome to another episode of the Hustle and Flowchart podcast! I'm Joe Fier, your host, and today, we're diving into the world of networking and personal growth based on Joe Polish's book, "What's In It For Them." I'm excited to share insights on how to improve your interactions with others and elevate your business strategies by leveraging the latest tools and books. Let's jump right in! Building Stronger Connections This episode explores improving your networking skills based on Joe Polish's book, "What's In It For Them." Joe Polish is a well-known figure in the business world, running high-level masterminds and helping elite business owners and marketers. His book outlines nine genius networking principles to help you open doors in your personal and professional life. Useful Links: What's In It For Them Be Useful, Grateful, and Valuable The first key takeaway is the importance of being useful, grateful, and valuable to people around you. Imagine how you can help others and show appreciation. This mindset shift can change how you approach situations and build stronger relationships. Joe Polish emphasizes the need to be there for others and provide actual value. Quick story: Mike Koenigs and I recently led a workshop at Joe Polish's Genius Network headquarters. We showed business owners how to use AI to scale their productivity. It was an incredible experience that highlighted the importance of being useful and providing value in real-time. Action Step: Time-block daily to send personalized messages to people in your world. Use tools like Loom to make your communications more engaging and genuine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91sPkvexGkg Be Fun, Memorable, and Yourself The second principle is to be fun, memorable, and true to yourself. Avoid being too formal or trying to fit into someone else's expectations. Authenticity builds stronger connections and makes you more memorable. Asking genuine questions and sharing personal stories can help you connect on a deeper level. Don't hesitate to inject humor and be open about your own experiences, even if they aren't perfect. This builds rapport and makes interactions more enjoyable. Action Step: Ask genuine questions and share personal stories in your conversations. Be yourself, and don't put on a mask to impress others. Give Value On the Spot The final principle is to give value on the spot. Joe Polish talks about the importance of doing things quickly and not waiting to follow up later. Using David Allen's two-minute rule from the "Getting Things Done" method can help you implement this principle. If you can complete a task in under two minutes, do it immediately. This could be sending a quick message, connecting people, or providing immediate feedback. This approach builds trust and shows that you value the other person's time. Action Step: Apply the two-minute rule in your daily interactions. If you can help someone or complete a task quickly, do it right away. Conclusion In this episode we explored how to build stronger connections with Joe Polish's networking principles. By being useful, grateful, and valuable, being yourself, and giving value on the spot, you can create lasting relationships and elevate your business success. Thank you for tuning in! Marcus Aurelius opens Meditations reflecting upon what he has learned from various influential individuals in his life. It's titled “Debts and Lessons,” and the 17 entries spanning nine pages and more than 2,000 words make up nearly 10% of the entire book! Marcus writes with the humility of someone in the final act of their life taking stock of how lucky they are to be where they are. It's beautiful. And it totally dispenses with the notion of the "self-made man," the idea that someone got somewhere all on their own. Marcus knew he was a product of so many mentors, influencers, advisors and teachers. Debt is the operative word in that title—he owed them so much. When we talked to Arnold Schwarzenegger on a recent episode of the Daily Stoic podcast, he talked about this very idea (in fact, he references how inspired he was by Meditations in the final chapter of his fantastic new book Be Useful). Because on the surface Arnold Schwarzenegger's remarkable life story is a classic example of that idea of the “self-made man.” Born and raised in a small village in Austria, seemingly on his own sheer will and determination, Arnold achieved extraordinary success in the worlds of bodybuilding, acting, business and politics, ultimately becoming a global icon.P.S. “I have always learned more from my failures and therefore I was never afraid of failure,” Arnold Schwarzenegger said while on the Daily Stoic podcast. The ultimate example in the power of hard work and perseverance, Arnold shared his wisdom in being useful while you still can, how to transform your liabilities into assets, and tips to best nurture both your mind and body. 4 Big Myths about Getting into Luxury

Own Your Business

Wouldn't it be great if there was a magic button you could push and all your dreams would come true? Or at least some of them?  I was reading Arnold Scharzenegger's recent memoir, Be Useful, and in it he says: “If there is one unavoidable truth in this world, it's that there is no substitute for putting in the work. People have tried to cut corners and skip steps in this process for as long as hard work has been hard.”  I love this, because it's so true. If you want to see the results, you have to put the work in. And, no, you can't cut corners. You can't skip steps if you want to create long-term success. It's one of the biggest myths we see in the wedding industry - and it can be dangerous for pros like you hoping to make it to the top. Try jumping three rungs on the ladder at one time and you'll likely fall flat on your face. For instance, you can't simply raise your rates by 30, 40, 50% at once because your work is great and a planner told you you should charge more…without putting in the work to create context and build value for that significantly higher price. But people do it all the time.  And fall flat on their faces. In this episode, Katy and I'll talk about several other myths about getting into luxury that prevent hard-working pros like you from making the move to elevate your business. We'll also discuss 8 proven steps that even Arnold would support on your journey to create success for your business and your life. Quick note if you're listening to this before February 7, 2024, our Sway Mastermind is officially open for enrollment. On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes talks to Robert Watson, a returned guest, about his upcoming book Ars Victoris: What Makes Life Better.  It comes out the first week of February.  Robert and Wes discuss how people cannot accept failures. The reality is failures are necessary before achieving success.  There are lessons with every failure that help people learn.  In today's society, failures are not accepted. Everyone gets a participation trophy, so success is not appreciated like it once was. Robert recounts his days playing basketball and how his coach motivated him to do better by humiliating him. The mindset in those days is second place is the first loser. The coach did and said things that aren't accepted today, but for Robert, humiliation was a great motivator. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in his book Be Useful that there is no such thing as a self-made man. Robert and Wes discuss this thought recounting their football days in high school. Both talk about how adjustments were made in the game according to the skill set of the player.  The game is a team effort, and success depends on the how the other players execute their responsibilities. Robert is thankful for the guards and wide receivers that blocked and helped other teammates.Robert says his life is not interesting, but the people he's met along the way are amazing. This includes his training instructors. To train properly is to strategize, to achieve the abilities needed, and fearless execution. The key is to get trained by people who actually did the task. Life coaches and people who only read about how to do something won't' cut it. Some advice given by Robert is to declutter life so one can accomplish what he can. He says to do 5 things needing done as early as possible to make the day a success. Control what can be controlled and what is 3 feet in front. It's important to be gradual in starting the process of achieving a goal. If a person wants to run 3 miles, they should start with a half a mile first. People are responsible for their own reaction to a situation. No one else is. Robert discusses dating apps and how they set people up for failure. They are monetized for one's failure. The model is to stay on the app. It can be addicting creating a feeling of euphoria from hits of dopamine. He says the best way to meet someone is through friends. Wes will have Robert on his podcast every Wednesday morning live on YouTube, Facebook, and X breaking down his book and discussing the lessons learned. Today Arnold Schwarzenegger shares tales from his extraordinary life, how he reached the pinnacle of success in three different careers, and why his 4th act is leveraging his influence to forge a better world. The occasion for this conversation is the publication of his new book, Be Useful—a primer on the principles that catapulted him into a generational icon and why service is the path to meaning and purpose. This conversation covers the vision, work ethic, and salesmanship that Arnold deployed to become the world's greatest bodybuilder, the top-grossing action star in Hollywood, and the highest elected official in California. We discuss reinvention, the importance of selling yourself, and how giving back became his paramount focus. We go deep on how he thinks about the influence he wields—and why usefulness and positivity are the antidotes to unhappiness and apathy. Arnold also shares thoughts on confidence, ego, and leadership. Why his friendship with James Cameron is so special—and how it led to Arnold's work as a passionate environmentalist. Not to be missed, Arnold also tells the amazing story of how a giant bust of Lenin ended up in his office. Recorded in Arnold's office—a museum of extraordinary artifacts—this is a must-WATCH episode. Open and vulnerable, this is the Governator like you've never before seen or heard him. Enjoy!
