YOU - The Master Entrepreneur - A Guide to True Greatness with Stan Hustad
... And I think you need to know the word too. So let's take an informative and maybe helpful 15 minutes to give you a new challenge... And a new opportunity because the world is now full of many many challenges and many opportunities... Let's check out the big word and see if we can do something that will make an impact in life and business. .... The following is what my robot decided to write about the program. The Power of Being Useful: How to Make an Impact in Life and Business In a fast-moving world where competition is fierce and expectations are rising, one simple but powerful question can define your success: How useful are you? Whether in business, relationships, or personal growth, usefulness is the key driver of impact and income. This idea, explored in a recent radio segment by Stan Hustad, offers a compelling framework for success in 2025 and beyond. The Key to Success: Be Useful Stan Hustad's discussion stems from a lesson he learned from his daughter Megan, who years ago set out to establish herself in the publishing industry in New York City. Despite coming from a Midwest state school and facing biases from the elite East Coast circles, she succeeded—not because of privilege or luck, but because she proved her worth by being useful. Her book, How to Be Useful, highlights a critical truth: success doesn't come from charm, intelligence, or even connections alone; it comes from offering value that people need. A striking parallel can be drawn with Elon Musk, a man who built his fortune and influence not by chasing money but by seeking ways to be useful. Whether with PayPal, SpaceX, or Tesla, Musk identified areas where he and his businesses could provide solutions, making them indispensable in their respective industries. His approach reinforces an essential lesson: usefulness leads to impact, and impact drives income. Key Takeaways for Life and Business • Success Is About Making a Difference – Being useful means solving problems, offering solutions, and improving the lives of others. The greater your impact, the greater your rewards. • Impact Drives Income – If you want to thrive financially, focus on how much value you bring to others. Money follows impact. • Simplicity and Innovation Matter – The best solutions are often simple but highly effective. Identify areas where you can streamline processes, create better experiences, or provide essential services. • Speed and Adaptability Are Crucial – The pace of work and communication is increasing. To remain relevant, you must be quick, adaptable, and continuously improving. • Differentiate Yourself Through Value – It's not enough to just be different; you must offer something uniquely valuable that makes a real impact. Final Thoughts: A Challenge for 2025 As we navigate a rapidly changing world, the ability to be useful is more important than ever. Those who succeed will not be those who sit back and wait for opportunities; they will be the ones who proactively create value, solve real-world problems, and make a meaningful difference. So here's the challenge: • How can you be more useful in your current job, business, or community? • What unique skills, insights, or talents do you have that can create an impact? • How can you turn usefulness into a source of income and long-term success? If you're ready to explore these ideas further, Stan Hustad is open to helping entrepreneurs, business leaders, and individuals unlock their potential. Reach out at stanhustad@gmail.com and start your journey toward making a real impact in 2025. The year is not just about survival—it's about thriving. Be useful, make an impact, and watch how success follows. Are you ready?

Delight Your Marriage | Relationship Advice, Christianity, & Sexual Intimacy
How do you plan to step into this year with confidence and faith? The new year often brings a whirlwind of resolutions and lofty goals. Perhaps you've felt that familiar pull—“I'm going to do more of this,” “I'll cut back on that,” or “This year, I'll completely turn things around.” But maybe that's not where you are right now. Maybe, instead of a burst of motivation, you feel unmotivated, stuck, or unsure. What if what you're missing isn't motivation, but faith? Faith that God is with you. Faith that He has a plan. Faith that, in Him, you can walk with a new sense of purpose. Faith is confidence. And if you feel like you're lacking confidence, let this be an invitation to lean into Him. Here are a few ways to grow in confidence this year—because as your confidence in God grows, so does your faith. 1. Make Time for Intentional Moments with the Lord Husbands, as spiritual leaders of your home, you're called to guide—not perfectly, but faithfully. Start small. Read a Bible verse to your children before bed, or take a moment to pray with your family. When you open your Bible, ask God to speak to your heart: “Lord, what do You want me to learn? Reveal Yourself to me.” These simple steps will deepen your relationship with God, building faith and intimacy with Him. 2. Embrace Risks with Courage Wives, stepping into the unknown—whether in your marriage or personal growth—can feel daunting. But just as thrill-seekers find exhilaration in challenges like skydiving or bungee jumping, there's a unique joy in stepping out in faith, even in intimate parts of your marriage. Confidence begins with trust—both in God and in the one He's placed by your side. 3. Be Useful for God's Kingdom In Revelation 3, we're reminded that God desires us to be useful—not lukewarm. Whether it's the hot water for cleansing or cold water for refreshing, each has purpose. Empty nesters, your wisdom and experience are invaluable. There's a generation that needs your guidance and your prayers. Step boldly into the role God has for you. 4. Trust in His Faithfulness No matter what you face, trust that God is working for your good. His love is steadfast, His discipline is kind, and His plans are perfect. Even in moments of waiting or trial, you can have confidence that He will see you through. 5. Look to Biblical Role Models Scripture is filled with examples of faith under pressure. Think of Mordecai's courage, Esther's boldness, Peter's willingness to step out onto the waves, and Paul's unwavering hope even in chains. Their lives remind us that faith often requires action—and that God uses those who trust Him to do extraordinary things. This year, don't wait for the perfect moment to begin. Take a step, even a small one, toward the place you feel God is calling you. A moving ship is easier to steer than one that's standing still. We're here for you, cheering you on and praying for God to fill you with confidence—confidence that will not only transform your life but ripple out to bless your family, your community, and the Kingdom. God delights in you. Let this truth guide you as you step boldly into what He has prepared for you this year. God bless you!

Arnold Schwarzenegger's book "Be Useful" presents seven life tools, with the seventh being a commitment to giving back. He challenges the idea of a "self-made man," emphasizing that everyone benefits from the support of others and has a responsibility to give back. Inspired by his father-in-law Sargent Shriver's speech, he advocates for breaking the mirrors of self-absorption and focusing on helping others. This mindset, backed by scientific studies, leads to greater happiness and contentment. Giving back can take many forms, from volunteering to mentoring, and role models like Dolly Parton and Warren Buffet exemplify its impact. Ultimately, Schwarzenegger argues that true fulfillment comes from contributing to others' well-being, which in turn enhances one's own life. Welcome to another episode of the Hustle and Flowchart podcast! I'm Joe Fier, your host, and today, we're diving into the world of networking and personal growth based on Joe Polish's book, "What's In It For Them." I'm excited to share insights on how to improve your interactions with others and elevate your business strategies by leveraging the latest tools and books. Let's jump right in! Building Stronger Connections This episode explores improving your networking skills based on Joe Polish's book, "What's In It For Them." Joe Polish is a well-known figure in the business world, running high-level masterminds and helping elite business owners and marketers. His book outlines nine genius networking principles to help you open doors in your personal and professional life. Useful Links: What's In It For Them Be Useful, Grateful, and Valuable The first key takeaway is the importance of being useful, grateful, and valuable to people around you. Imagine how you can help others and show appreciation. This mindset shift can change how you approach situations and build stronger relationships. Joe Polish emphasizes the need to be there for others and provide actual value. Quick story: Mike Koenigs and I recently led a workshop at Joe Polish's Genius Network headquarters. We showed business owners how to use AI to scale their productivity. It was an incredible experience that highlighted the importance of being useful and providing value in real-time. Action Step: Time-block daily to send personalized messages to people in your world. Use tools like Loom to make your communications more engaging and genuine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91sPkvexGkg Be Fun, Memorable, and Yourself The second principle is to be fun, memorable, and true to yourself. Avoid being too formal or trying to fit into someone else's expectations. Authenticity builds stronger connections and makes you more memorable. Asking genuine questions and sharing personal stories can help you connect on a deeper level. Don't hesitate to inject humor and be open about your own experiences, even if they aren't perfect. This builds rapport and makes interactions more enjoyable. Action Step: Ask genuine questions and share personal stories in your conversations. Be yourself, and don't put on a mask to impress others. Give Value On the Spot The final principle is to give value on the spot. Joe Polish talks about the importance of doing things quickly and not waiting to follow up later. Using David Allen's two-minute rule from the "Getting Things Done" method can help you implement this principle. If you can complete a task in under two minutes, do it immediately. This could be sending a quick message, connecting people, or providing immediate feedback. This approach builds trust and shows that you value the other person's time. Action Step: Apply the two-minute rule in your daily interactions. If you can help someone or complete a task quickly, do it right away. Conclusion In this episode we explored how to build stronger connections with Joe Polish's networking principles. By being useful, grateful, and valuable, being yourself, and giving value on the spot, you can create lasting relationships and elevate your business success. Thank you for tuning in! Rev. Wendy shares about open-minded curiosity, today from the "Be Useful," book. This chapter, titled "Shut Your Mouth, Open Your Mind," emphasizes the importance of listening more than speaking, quoting various sources like the Bible and the Dalai Lama to highlight this point. Schwarzenegger argues that curiosity, driven by humility, attracts generosity and opens doors to learning and personal growth. Historical figures like Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Einstein, and Steve Jobs exemplify how curiosity can lead to groundbreaking discoveries. To cultivate curiosity, Schwarzenegger suggests staying open-minded, asking questions, reading widely, and engaging in lifelong learning. Today, Rev. Wendy shares about, Arnold Schwarzenegger's book "Be Useful" emphasizes the importance of clear communication as a crucial tool for success. He argues that effective communication, or "selling," goes beyond traditional sales; it's about enrolling others in your vision and ideas through persuasive and heartfelt communication. Schwarzenegger's life, from an Austrian immigrant to a global icon, showcases the power of selling oneself and one's ideas. He underscores that everyone, regardless of their profession, engages in a form of sales in daily interactions. To be successful, one must deeply understand and believe in their vision, practice conveying it effectively, and connect genuinely with others. He also notes that being underestimated can be an advantage, offering a chance to exceed expectations. Schwarzenegger recommends developing communication skills through practice and organizations like Toastmasters, emphasizing authenticity and storytelling as powerful tools in any form of sales. ~ Website: http://www.theunitycenter.net ~ Download Our New App: https://theunitycenter.churchcenter.com/setup ~ Ask Yourself This: https://www.amazon.com/Ask-Yourself-This-Questions-Expand/dp/087159336X ~ Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/2hBqp7F ~ Purchase Lesson Series Packages: https://theunitycenter.net/sunday-series-packages ~ Listen to our Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6YJWcAhQUnkEHFqBXQmz1G
Today Rev. Wendy continued her series based on "Seven Tools: Hard Work," Arnold Schwarzenegger outlines seven essential tools for life based on his book "Be Useful." These tools are clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. Schwarzenegger's life story—from his beginnings in Austria to his success in bodybuilding, acting, and politics—illustrates the power of these principles. The core message emphasizes that hard work and consistent effort are irreplaceable and lead to success, as evidenced by historical figures like Thomas Edison and Walt Disney. The piece highlights the importance of preparation, practice, and follow-through, urging readers to consistently put in the work to be ready for opportunities. ~ Website: http://www.theunitycenter.net ~ Download Our New App: https://theunitycenter.churchcenter.com/setup ~ Ask Yourself This: https://www.amazon.com/Ask-Yourself-This-Questions-Expand/dp/087159336X ~ Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/2hBqp7F ~ Purchase Lesson Series Packages: https://theunitycenter.net/sunday-series-packages ~ Listen to our Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6YJWcAhQUnkEHFqBXQmz1G

Marcus Aurelius opens Meditations reflecting upon what he has learned from various influential individuals in his life. It's titled “Debts and Lessons,” and the 17 entries spanning nine pages and more than 2,000 words make up nearly 10% of the entire book! Marcus writes with the humility of someone in the final act of their life taking stock of how lucky they are to be where they are. It's beautiful. And it totally dispenses with the notion of the "self-made man," the idea that someone got somewhere all on their own. Marcus knew he was a product of so many mentors, influencers, advisors and teachers. Debt is the operative word in that title—he owed them so much. When we talked to Arnold Schwarzenegger on a recent episode of the Daily Stoic podcast, he talked about this very idea (in fact, he references how inspired he was by Meditations in the final chapter of his fantastic new book Be Useful). Because on the surface Arnold Schwarzenegger's remarkable life story is a classic example of that idea of the “self-made man.” Born and raised in a small village in Austria, seemingly on his own sheer will and determination, Arnold achieved extraordinary success in the worlds of bodybuilding, acting, business and politics, ultimately becoming a global icon.P.S. “I have always learned more from my failures and therefore I was never afraid of failure,” Arnold Schwarzenegger said while on the Daily Stoic podcast. The ultimate example in the power of hard work and perseverance, Arnold shared his wisdom in being useful while you still can, how to transform your liabilities into assets, and tips to best nurture both your mind and body. This episode is full of nuggets you can directly apply to your life so be sure to check it out. And for more of Arnold's uniquely earnest, blunt, and potent insight, pick up his new book Be Useful: Seven Tools For Life, available over at the Painted Porch!-----And in today's excerpt from The Daily Stoic Journal, Ryan examines the Stoic idea that expensive things cost more to us than their dollar value by reflecting on a recent situation in his life.✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail

@schwarzenegger aka Arnold aka the Terminator aka the Governor is iconic. His accomplishments are profound but also strategic and conceptually induced. To go from a young boy in Austria, Gratz who found working out as a way to escape the realities of post-WW2 Germany to being the GOAT of Bodybuilding, to then being a movie star and later governor of California takes real vision and real execution. How did he do it? Did all that benching help? His book - Be Useful - has been a game changer and I want to review it in conjunction with the faith and Gospel of Jesus Christ. Wouldn't it be great if there was a magic button you could push and all your dreams would come true? Or at least some of them? I was reading Arnold Scharzenegger's recent memoir, Be Useful, and in it he says: “If there is one unavoidable truth in this world, it's that there is no substitute for putting in the work. People have tried to cut corners and skip steps in this process for as long as hard work has been hard.” I love this, because it's so true. If you want to see the results, you have to put the work in. And, no, you can't cut corners. You can't skip steps if you want to create long-term success. It's one of the biggest myths we see in the wedding industry - and it can be dangerous for pros like you hoping to make it to the top. Try jumping three rungs on the ladder at one time and you'll likely fall flat on your face. For instance, you can't simply raise your rates by 30, 40, 50% at once because your work is great and a planner told you you should charge more…without putting in the work to create context and build value for that significantly higher price. But people do it all the time. And fall flat on their faces. In this episode, Katy and I'll talk about several other myths about getting into luxury that prevent hard-working pros like you from making the move to elevate your business. We'll also discuss 8 proven steps that even Arnold would support on your journey to create success for your business and your life. Quick note if you're listening to this before February 7, 2024, our Sway Mastermind is officially open for enrollment. It's a complete level-up for wedding pros interested in either a) moving into the luxury market, or b) trying to book more consistently at higher prices if you're already on the monogrammed dance floor with affluent clients. On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes talks to Robert Watson, a returned guest, about his upcoming book Ars Victoris: What Makes Life Better. It comes out the first week of February. Robert and Wes discuss how people cannot accept failures. The reality is failures are necessary before achieving success. There are lessons with every failure that help people learn. In today's society, failures are not accepted. Everyone gets a participation trophy, so success is not appreciated like it once was. Robert recounts his days playing basketball and how his coach motivated him to do better by humiliating him. The mindset in those days is second place is the first loser. The coach did and said things that aren't accepted today, but for Robert, humiliation was a great motivator. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in his book Be Useful that there is no such thing as a self-made man. Robert and Wes discuss this thought recounting their football days in high school. Both talk about how adjustments were made in the game according to the skill set of the player. The game is a team effort, and success depends on the how the other players execute their responsibilities. Robert is thankful for the guards and wide receivers that blocked and helped other teammates.Robert says his life is not interesting, but the people he's met along the way are amazing. This includes his training instructors. To train properly is to strategize, to achieve the abilities needed, and fearless execution. The key is to get trained by people who actually did the task. Life coaches and people who only read about how to do something won't' cut it. Some advice given by Robert is to declutter life so one can accomplish what he can. He says to do 5 things needing done as early as possible to make the day a success. Control what can be controlled and what is 3 feet in front. It's important to be gradual in starting the process of achieving a goal. If a person wants to run 3 miles, they should start with a half a mile first. People are responsible for their own reaction to a situation. No one else is. Robert discusses dating apps and how they set people up for failure. They are monetized for one's failure. The model is to stay on the app. It can be addicting creating a feeling of euphoria from hits of dopamine. He says the best way to meet someone is through friends. Wes will have Robert on his podcast every Wednesday morning live on YouTube, Facebook, and X breaking down his book and discussing the lessons learned. The live starts 7:00 AM EST. Lessons from studying Be Useful by Arnold Schwarzenegger. In Be Useful, Arnold reveals his tool kit for how he achieved all his dreams, and why he believes you can use the same tool for your life. Arnold is the world's greatest bodybuilder, highest-paid movie star, and was leader of the world's sixth-largest economy. He achieved all this by following a process of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and giving back. So, I thought I would do the same with you. Last week, I thought I was going to be talking about quotes that I will be using with my varsity boys' basketball team over the course of our season. The quotes will be based on the Core Covenants that our team has come up with that we feel will establish the identity that we are seeking for our team. However, I hadn't started working through our Core Covenants with our teams because we hadn't finished picking our teams as of last Monday. I thought we might start our Core Covenants last week, but we will start them this week. So last week I talked to you about quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger's new book, "Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life." As I told you last week, while I am only a few chapters into it, it is quite good, and it is filled with so many great concepts that I have actually started reading parts of it to my team. So, I thought I would do the same with you. So last week, this week, and probably next week, you get to hear quotes and ideas from The Terminator!! Today's episode focuses on the concept of putting in the reps to become the best you can be. You have to put in the time and effort to laying a foundation of fundamentals if you want to be able to eventually become someone who innovates and creates and plays or works at a high level. This chapter really nails home some great points for all of us seeking to become our best. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
Last week we moved on from our series on Perfectionism and began a new journey. I thought I was going to be talking about quotes that I will be using with my varsity boys' basketball team over the course of our season. The quotes will be based on the Core Covenants that our team has come up with that we feel will establish the identity that we are seeking for our team. I told you that I would be telling you this week what our covenants are, and that I would begin with a quote or a few quotes on the first covenant and then continue in that vein throughout the season. However, last week I went back to Dr. Brene Brown and her book "Daring Greatly." I decided to talk about the entire "Man in the Arena" quote from Teddy Roosevelt from which Brene Brown got that title for her book. That's because I will be using that with my team, too. Also, I had not gotten to our Core Covenants yet with my team, so it was the perfect time to talk about "The Man in the Arena."Well, I still haven't started with our Core Covenants. We are actually doin cuts (Yuck!) and picking our teams tonight. Therefore, we won't start our Core Covenants until later this week or early next week. So today, I have a special treat for you from an unlikely source - Arnold Schwarzenegger! He has a new book out that my step-daughter, Maggie, got me. It's called "Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life." I am only a few chapters into it, but it is so good, and it is filled with so many great concepts that I have actually started reading parts of it to my team. So, I thought I would do the same with you. So for this week and probably next week, you get to hear quotes and ideas from The Terminator!! One of the biggest struggles people have is in coming to terms with apparent problems, whether they be current problems, or problems from the past. While we might be able to grasp the concept of evolution or progressive change intellectually, when the experience becomes uncomfortable it becomes more difficult to rationalize. In this episode, Thom answers questions from listeners seeking resolution to problems that seem too big to be solved, or that have gone beyond the time when something can be done. It's a reminder that perspective isn't just an intellectual process, and that it's a byproduct of consciousness. The boys sit down to ponder a simple question in different forms: What if Martin Scorsese directed Forrest Gump? What if Greta Gerwig directed Scarface? What if Quentin Tarantino directed Toy Story? What if corporate greed hadn't gotten in the way of making the final Divergent movie? All these questions and more will be answered as Sonny and Tom do an episode that's basically banter with a tiny bit of structure. And when that structure proves to be too boring, they fall back on the banter to keep you interested. Don't worry, next episode is another game one. They also ponder what it would look like if Arnold Schwarzenegger played Laurence Olivier's titular role in "Hamlet," which generates mixed results on whether he would still be able to win the Academy Award or not. They also discuss Arnold's new book, "Be Useful," as well as the possibility that he might have ended things with his longtime partner Heather Mulligan. Sad to see them go, especially since our backup plan of setting him up with Shirley MacLaine is slightly hampered by her being 13 years his senior. What was the one superpower that enabled a 19-year-old to leave Austria, move to America, learn the language, become Mr. Olympia 7 times, become the highest-paid actor in the world, become the governor of California, and meet every US president since Lyndon Johnson?Curiosity. Today, we're delving into Arnold Schwarzenegger's new book, "Be Useful," to explore how his 'curiosity' has evolved into his superpower and how you can harness it too.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), a 2024 presidential candidate, joins Meet the Press exclusively to discuss red flag laws and the Second Amendment amid Maine's recent mass shooting which killed 18 people. Lola in the Mirror by Trent Dalton. He's the author of Boy Swallows Universe which has made a big impact on the literary scene, and this new one is simply wonderful. He writes brilliantly about the dark underbelly of Australia – especially Queensland which is his home state, and this is the story of a woman and her unnamed daughter who've spent the girl's entire life on the run and are currently living in a busted down old van which is parked in a Brisbane scrapyard. The girl has a dream that one day her art will be exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, which given her circumstances feels like shooting for the moon. The author writes with incredible empathy about their situation, and about all the people in their small community. This is about survival, ambition and love and it's fantastic. Be Useful by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnie's father apparently drilled into him the mantra be useful which is what he says he's tried to do his whole life. Here he shares the seven guiding principles which he says enable you to find your real purpose, presumably much as he found his. He interweaves his insights with compelling personal stories, life-changing successes and life-threatening failures alike – and in the process provides a toolkit for getting the most out of your life. Today Arnold Schwarzenegger shares tales from his extraordinary life, how he reached the pinnacle of success in three different careers, and why his 4th act is leveraging his influence to forge a better world. The occasion for this conversation is the publication of his new book, Be Useful—a primer on the principles that catapulted him into a generational icon and why service is the path to meaning and purpose. This conversation covers the vision, work ethic, and salesmanship that Arnold deployed to become the world's greatest bodybuilder, the top-grossing action star in Hollywood, and the highest elected official in California. We discuss reinvention, the importance of selling yourself, and how giving back became his paramount focus. We go deep on how he thinks about the influence he wields—and why usefulness and positivity are the antidotes to unhappiness and apathy. Arnold also shares thoughts on confidence, ego, and leadership. Why his friendship with James Cameron is so special—and how it led to Arnold's work as a passionate environmentalist. Not to be missed, Arnold also tells the amazing story of how a giant bust of Lenin ended up in his office. Recorded in Arnold's office—a museum of extraordinary artifacts—this is a must-WATCH episode. Open and vulnerable, this is the Governator like you've never before seen or heard him. Enjoy! It is not unreasonable to want to BE USEFUL for God. The next question is then, how do I get to be USEFUL for Him? There is stuff that HE does for sure. Much of the spiritual activity is above our pay grade. Yet, there is stuff WE DO in cooperation. We are CALLED. He does the calling for sure. Make sure you ANSWER the call.We are CLEANSED. The daily walk of being a Christ-follower is a whole lotta wrestling and forgiving and fleeing and conviction and crying out. If you are involved in the DIFFICULTY of Christianity, you are probably on the right track. We are to be CAPABLE. We are to be USEFUL. Generally people need to see the FACE of God before they turn into the HANDS of God. Start with ready. Get to being useful to the MasterWe are to be in COMMUNITY. There is an "along with" other pure hearted Christians trying to be useful to God. If you are not being used, check your fervor to be along with others in community.Bewithme.us Castbox, Pocket Casts, Overcast, iHeart Radio, Podcast Addict, Pandora

The Accidental Gods podcast exists to set the conditions for emergence into a new system: to bring a critical mass of us to a place where emergence into a new system is a rewarding reality. To get there, we bring to you some of the many astonishingly creative, compassionate, switched-on people who are working at the leading edge of change. Alan Lane is one of these people. He's the artistic director of the theatre company Slung Low, which in turn is one of the most innovative theatre companies in the UK, if not in the world. Absolutely embedded in the neighbourhood in which they work, Slung Low are committed to their core principles of 'Be Kind, Be Useful, Everyone gets to do what they want. Nobody gets to tell anyone else what they can't do.' (within obvious limits - as you'll hear). Alan is also the author of the book 'The Club on the Edge of Town' which is subtitled 'A Pandemic Memoir' but is so, so much more - this is the story of how Slung Low arose, how it came to be entered in the oldest Working Mens' Club in England (unable to change the name), and ultimately became a Food Bank during the pandemic. It's the story of standing in the rain, of keeping promises, of integrity and grit and sheer bloody-minded tenacity. Most of all, it's a story of how a small group of committed people made a huge difference to the lives of their neighbours and community. It is also the story of the culture clash that you'll hear more about in the podcast, and that led, ultimately, to Slung Low moving elsewhere in Leeds. Since then, their transformation to being part of the team that put on the utterly magical opening event of the Leeds Year of Culture 2023, where the city's most famous pop star spoke to a god - is the stuff of legend. In their new world, their core purpose is to make Awe and Wonder happen - and they are doing it with commitment, integrity, enthusiasm and raw inspiration. In this episode, Alan tells the story that led from standing in the rain in Nottinghill to creating technical magic on a stage in Leeds. We explore the power of story to change people's lives and the value of commitment to the things we believe in. We dig deep into Alan's absolute moral imperatives and his compassion for the people around him, people he values, people he teaches to value themselves in a world that, in his words, 'teaches us we're cogs in a machine and we're scum' is heartbreakingly wonderful. Truly, if the whole world was inspired as Leeds is being inspired, we'd be in a different place. (And the god that rose out of the river was a world first: made with drones, everyone said it was impossible. And Alan and the team made it happen anyway. How good of a metaphor is that for what we have to do now in our emerging new system?)Bio: Alan Lane is Artistic Director of Slung Low directing most of their work over the last decade including projects with the Barbican, the RSC, The Almeida, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Liverpool Everyman, Sheffield Theatres, Singapore Arts Festival and the Lowry. Slung Low make large scale people's theatre work on stages, trains, castles, swimming pools, fishing boats and town centres. In 2017 Slung Low headlined Hull UK City of Culture 2017 with Flood by James Phillips: a 4 Part epic performed online, live and on the BBC. Over half a million people saw a part of Flood. It won a Royal Televisual Award Yorkshire for innovation in drama. In 2019 the company took over management of the oldest working men's club in Britain, The Holbeck in South Leeds. Initially, they ran this venue as a Pay What You Decide creative and community space, but during lockdown, they transformed into one of the only non-means-tested Food Banks in the country. Their work there was transformative and Alan wrote the book 'The Club on the Edge of Town' out of their experiences there. Late last year, the company moved venues to a warehouse next to their favourite primary school and began to help organise the astonishing, miraculous, technologically outstanding (and magically wonderful) opening event to Leeds Year of Culture 2023, which culminated in Corrine Bailey Rae talking to a god in front of a rugby stadium filled with 10,000 artists. So, a lot of my friends – actually, Idon't think any of my friends are as into reading as I am. Okay, acouple are, but most aren't.And so, whenever I tell them about some amazing book I've read, the gist I get from my friends is, just tell me what to do.Tim Ferriss: Give me the index card, yeah.Derek Sivers: It's like, yeah, like they don't wanna read the book. So, my friendJeff, he's a smart guy, he's a lawyer, he's smart. But, he just looksat me with these tired eyes, and is just like, I'm not gonna read thebook, dude. You can stop pushing it on me, it's never gonnahappen. He said, just tell me what to do, he said, I trust you. I likeyou, you know me, so tell me what to do.And, I realized that, if you trust the source, you don't need thearguments. That so much of a book is arguing its point, but often, you don't need the argument. If you trust the source, you can justget the point. So, after reading, taking detailed notes on 220 books,on my site, I realized that distilling wisdom into directives is sovaluable, but it's so rarely done.In fact, the only time I can think of that it was done was MichaelPollan, with his three books in a row, about food, each one gettingshorter and shorter. I think the first one was, was it Omnivore'sDilemma?Tim Ferriss: Omnivore's Dilemma. Yeah.Which was big, so I know you're the kind of guy that would –Tim Ferriss: It's a great book, but also, I mean, there are, like 70 pages on cornproduction in the US, and most people just drop out. Even I waslike, God, my eyes are glazing over here. But, I know there's somegreat stuff coming, so I'll just slog through it. But yes, a very greatbook, but a very big book.Derek Sivers: And then, he did another one a year later, that basically took thebest stuff from Omnivore's Dilemma, and made it into a shorter, kinda more pop market kinda 2 to 300-page book. I forget thename of that one. And –Tim Ferriss: Could it have been In Defense of Food, maybe?Derek Sivers: Yes, that sounds right, thank you.So, even that one, I remember someone telling me I should read it,and I remember looking at it and going, I don't know if I wannaread 300 pages about food. But then, about a year later, he put outa teeny, tiny, little book called Food Rules. I think that's what it'scalled. And, it's like, you basically can read the whole thing whilejust standing in the bookstore. It's, he took the energy and theeffort to compress everything he's learned into very succinctdirectives. And, that's what it is. Sentences that tell you what to do.Do this, do that.Or, don't do that. If your grandmother wouldn't recognize it asfood, don't eat it. And, his tagline for that book, the popular phrasewas, “Eat food, mostly plants, not too much.”Tim Ferriss: Right.Derek Sivers: And, I so admired that. I got inspired by the effort it takes to distillthe blah, blah, blah, blah blah, down into the specific sentences forthe people that just aren't going to read that 900-page book, right?Probably all of that same information is in the 900-page book, butwe have to be honest for a minute and admit that not everyone isgoing to read the 900-page book. So, as I'm reading these 300-page books, 220 of them, very often there'll be this, like, brilliant, amazing, important point on, like, page 290, and I feel almost alittle sad that almost nobody's gonna read that. I wish that theselittle, tiny points were extracted, without all the surroundingargument. So, especially – okay, I'll admit, this was also sparked by the ideaof when I had a kid, and I thought, I might not be alive when he'smy age, or even when he's 19, I might die before he gets older. How can I compress everything that I've learned, that I think heshould know, into a real, succinct format, that he will definitelyread? And, of course, then I thought, other people will read, too.So, I got onto this idea, of the Do This Project.Which is, instead of talking around a subject, just giving directives, saying, do this, do that, don't do this, don't do that. Which is kindafunny, because it feels very presumptuous, right? Like, who am Ito tell others what to do? But then, I think, well, who am I not to?Right, it's useful, so get over myself. Kinda like you asked aboutme onstage when I was 18, what was the biggest lesson learned?Like, this isn't about me, people aren't here about me, they're herefor their own gain.Oh, you asked about my advice to TED speakers. That's my mainadvice to TED speakers. It's like, people aren't here to see you, oryour life story. People come to TED, or watch TED videos, tolearn something. So, just speak only about what is surprising, andskip everything else.where can people find the directives?Derek Sivers: Only in this podcast. No, it's true. I haven't done anything with itpublicly. At first, I thought I was gonna make this into a big, keynote speech I was doing at a conference. The WorldDomination Summit Conference, in Portland.I spent four months of fulltime work, from 7:00AM to midnight, for four – seven days a week, for four months in a row, justrereading all 220 book notes, extracting, or trying to turn all of thisadvice or this knowledge, this wisdom, trying to turn it intodirectives. Because a lot of it, almost never is in the directiveformat already. People talk around a subject, they talk aboutfindings and research. But, it takes some real effort, kind of likethe old philosophers, the – you've read the stoicism book? TheGuide to The Good Life?Tim Ferriss: Yes, I have. I have that up on my living room wall, as well.Derek Sivers: And, in that book, right in the intro, he says, if you were to ask anykind of modern person who calls themselves a philosopher, whatshould I do with my life?He said, sit down and get comfortable, because they will tell you, well, it depends on what you mean by what, and it depends whatyou mean by do, and really, it depends what you mean by life. Or, really, maybe it depends on what you mean by my life. So, peopletalk around the point a lot, but back in 600 BC, if you would'veasked one of these philosophers, what should I do with my life, they would sit down and tell you exactly what to do with your life.Do this, don't do that, pursue this, don't pursue that. So, I was really inspired by that intro too. So, the idea was, now,how can I go back, through all of these amazing books I've read, and compress them into specific directives? So, it took me fourmonths of work to come up with the following like, 18 sentences.Do you wanna hear them?Tim Ferriss: I do wanna hear them. I'm super-excited about this.Derek Sivers: So, this was going to be a 35-minute long keynote speech, and itturned out to be a horrible, 35-minute long talk. But, it'sentertaining for about three minutes. So, here's the three-minuteversion. Okay, first, I had fun categorizing them. So, this is thecategory called “How to Be Useful to Others.” Ready?Tim Ferriss: I'm ready.Derek Sivers: No. one, get famous. Do everything in public, and for the public. The more people you reach, the more useful you are. The oppositeis hiding, which is of no use to anyone. How to be useful to others,No. two, get rich. Money is neutral proof that you're adding valueto people's lives, so by getting rich, you're being useful as a sideeffect. Once rich, spend the money in ways that are even moreuseful to others. Then, getting rich is double useful. How to beuseful to others. Share strong opinions. Strong opinions are veryuseful to others. Those who are undecided or ambivalent can justadopt your stance. But, those who disagree can solidify their stance by arguingagainst yours. So, even if you invent an opinion for the sole sake ofargument, boldly sharing an opinion is very useful to others. Howto be useful to others: be expensive. People given a placebo pillwere twice as likely to have their pain disappear when told that thatpill was expensive. People who paid more for tickets were morelikely to attend the performance. So, people who spend more for aproduct or service value it more, and get more use out of it, so beexpensive. That's it.Tim Ferriss: This is good stuff.
We cover how patterns are in every aspect of our life, even down to subatomic energy levels. In addition, we talk about the eighth, ninth, and tenth chakras, which are focused on archetypes, sole purpose, and past lives, we also talk about the power of a healthy pelvic floor. The Intuitive Energy Podcast Season 2 Episode 7 When we take a step back, we realize that the world isn't chaotic; it's filled with patterns. Sometimes, we may need to take 1,000 steps back to recognize a pattern. Governments typically will create chaos, then make order out of the chaos when we really didn't want the mess in the first place. The Eighth and Ninth Chakras We all share four main archetypes that deal with our sense of self, like a mandala of how we go about creating ourselves. The four primary archetypes are the child, the Guardian of Choice (Saboteur), the Guardian of Faith (Prostitute energy), and the Guardian of Self-Esteem (Victim). The latter aligns with your body and promotes self-healing. The ninth chakra is where you'll find your sole purpose. When I read people's ninth chakra, I'll get insight into their life journey or destiny. The Importance of Accepting Existing Realities You're over the hump. If you can accept the existing reality of what's going on, you can easily see the pattern. Accepting the reality of other's actions is beneficial for you to understand where they are coming from. Polarity and Engaging Opposite Energies One important aspect you'll want to remember about polarity is that you can put your decision-making switch onto a dimmer. Your final decision doesn't have to be an all or nothing - a yes or no. Ask yourself - what is the opposite feeling of the negative feeling you have? Now, let them meld together. Although it's nice to know the opposite feeling, you don't have to run and hide in the other corner. Try staying in the middle, enjoying your life, and create more ease than frustration so you can choose how you want to show up. Healing as an Appreciation of Self-Esteem Healing isn't an on/off switch; it's a gradation of self-appreciation and self-esteem. The way you intend your actions and the way you intend to feel has an impact. Wanting to feel better makes more wanting to feel better. Appreciate who you are for what you are and engage the energy you want to install. Grow Into Your Energy Grow into yourself - be a little bit of what you intend or have a little experience. Intend to shift your cellular and your thought pattern into a new pattern. Be Useful at What You're Good At You don't have to be “the best” at what you do - be useful at what you're good at. Be useful to yourself or someone else in the patterns of what you do. Be authentic and be useful to take the judgment out of your life. Energy work is complementary to other medicines. Make sure to feel heard so you can build your self-esteem and, in the process, heal yourself. Additional modalities that complement are acupuncture, massage, and pelvic-floor physical therapy like done by Solstice Physiotherapy in NYC. Multiple Sources of Empathy You could be empathetic because, as a child, you were in an abusive environment, which made you hyper-aware of your surroundings. You may also have inherited your empathic skills. Accept what you are, figure out where that pattern came from and tweak it, so the pattern serves you well. Resources Learn how to clear out your own chakras in real-time during a session with me! My clients have found this to be a beneficial practice for the spleen, throat, or liver area. This can help balance your empathic receivers, self-expression, and the effects that family and upbringing can have on our systems. Bold Church - Part 9 - Be Ready. Be Useful. (Jesse Campbell) - July 28th, 2019 by Highlands Community Church

This episode of Business Jazz Podcast is (mainly) about : How to do an elevator pitch to the CEO of your 'ideal potential client'. _________________ There is no perfect way. You need to find your best way. There are some essentials & some desirables. You must find out how to get in touch with the person afterwards ensure they know how to contact you (if they want to). Give us an example of a successful elevator pitch you've done Paul Paul's elevator pitch story: to an advertising agency director. Paul eavesdropped on a conversation during a coffee break at a conference in Dublin. (The person in the queue was a director of Arks "one of Ireland's longest-established agencies, with billings of £21 million (€27 million) in 1999 - up from £6 million in 1996".) The Guinness stout account was once held by Arks for more than 20 years. What Paul did led to a contract to provide services to the agency - presentation skills training courses for account managers & creatives. Learning: A queue for coffee's a great place to take the first step - to make a "memorable splash". P&R speculate how Michael Lynch AV3 Media (for example) could make a 'memorable splash' - introducing AV3 Media to new potential clients. PLEASE NOTE: The topic of Elevator Pitches emerged as a surprise during this podcast. P&R don't decide beforehand what they're going to focus on. ____________________ A 'business development' news story : ShowandTell Communications is in a situation. Another podcast team are (1) in difficult (2) looking for advice Asked for advice, S&T offered a solution. The solution involved offering to do some work (audio-editing) - for free. Because S&T want to be seen as genuinely attractive Our No 1 aim at Business Jazz Podcast is to (1) Be Useful to Show&Tell Communications (our parent company) [and equally at the same time] (2) Be Useful to other businesses That's why we offered a trial - one piece of work - valuable but not a huge service. Why a Trial period is a good idea: A trial piece of work. The advantage to both parties - being able to stop without losing face - time to get to know each other & see whether both like working together. In this case, it's important to clarify the quality of the audio-editing needed - before quoting or agreeing a fee for the service. You'll hear lots of chat about editing audio - the tricky work involved in removing background sounds - how it can take a long time to remove sounds entirely. [There's short reference to sound of Theresa May coughing at Tory Party Conference.] ______________________ Contact Paul & Roger on www.businessjazz.net. - if you'd like to follow up on anything on this podcast. Plus, Megan Hustad explains why TED talks remind her of the tent revival sermons of her youth. She’s the author of How to Be Useful and More Than Conquerors: A Memoir of Lost Arguments. And to end the show, Mike can’t stop spieling about the New York Times’ coverage of the Chicago elections. Today’s sponsor: Stamps.com. In the Christian life, it is often quite easy to allow ourselves to believe we exist to be served, rather than to be servants of Christ. This shouldn't be. Pastor Rory Rodgers teaches on Acts 2:47 - chapter 3, and emphasizes the importance of being useful for the ministry of Christ.
