Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 84 Sam is joined by filmmaker Charlie Shackleton, director of unique new film The Afterlight (82 mins). Charlie has chosen the darkly funny archive documentary, The Atomic Cafe (86 mins), directed by Jayne Loader, Kevin Rafferty, and Pierce Rafferty. This 1982 cult classic juxtaposes Cold War history, propaganda, music and culture, seamlessly crafted from government-produced educational and training films, newsreels and advertisements. Sam and Charlie discuss The Afterlight's unique distribution plan, the transporting power of The Atomic Cafe, and the challenges that would have gone into making a film like this in 1982. Watch The Atomic Cafe online via Plex, or on Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber's Kino Classic Collection. Thank you for downloading. We'll be back in a couple of weeks! Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" goes "they paved paradise, and put up a parking lot." Well ... what if they tore down a cool place to ... improve public transit? (Insert sound effects of a Progressive's head exploding here.) Anyway, that's what happened. The Atomic Cafe, at 422 East First Street in Little Tokyo, was a famous punk gathering spot. It closed in 1989 and the building was demolished in 2015 to make way for the subway's Regional Connector. But luckily for Off-Ramp listeners, dublab's Mark "Frosty" McNeill created an audio love letter to The Atomic Cafe that debuted on Off-Ramp in 2016. And when I wrote to let Mark know, he wrote back: The timing of the podcast episode is perfect. We're actually having a free, all ages event on Saturday, May 7th 4-8pm at Union Station to celebrate the Deep Routes radio series I've been producing with Metro Arts. You don't need to RSVP, just put it on your calendar now, and show up on the 7th in your hightops, ripped skinny jeans, and Union Jack t-shirt. Support for this podcast is made possible by Gordon and Dona Crawford, who believe that quality journalism makes Los Angeles a better place to live. This program is made possible in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people. CinePunked goes rummaging through the film archives via acclaimed Cold War documentary The Atomic Cafe, revealing a frightening concoction of propaganda, deception, delusion, and fear linked by America's presentation of the perceived benefits and risks of the atomic bomb and a nuclear war. With memories of the cold war stirred up in 2022 by recent action in eastern Europe we find ourselves wondering if anything has really changed in the last eight decades...With Robert JE Simpson, Dr Rachael Kelly, Neil Sedgewick and Ben 'Blademan' Simpson.

Just in time for the weekend. Another slice of film review pie to go with your 'black as the sky on a moonless night' coffee. This week we don our cowls and dust off our Esperanto phrase books for Incubus before heading to The Atomic Cafe for a mid 20th century nuclear snack, and then we fast forward to the 21st century for the 2000ADesque Split Second.
We at Film Forum were sad to learn of the recent passing of Kevin Rafferty, a masterful documentary filmmaker. His movies were brilliantly researched and edited – collaging materials from a vast array of sources. Politically astute and surprisingly humorous, Kevin’s movies infused wit and intelligence into every subject upon which he focused. All five of his feature films premiered at Film Forum. Most recently, Kevin came to the theater to support the re-release of his 1982 hit film, THE ATOMIC CAFE. The new restoration premiered on August 1, 2018, and was one of the films that launched the re-opening of the theater after a major renovation and expansion. In memory of Kevin Rafferty, Film Forum Presents a special encore episode featuring that evening’s Q&A with Rafferty and his ATOMIC CAFE co-directors Jayne Loader and Pierce Rafferty. The Q&A was moderated by Film Forum’s Premieres Programmer, Mike Maggiore.

The documentary classic “The Atomic Cafe,” an archival-footage essay about America’s relationship with the atomic bomb, is back in theaters with a new 4k restoration. Filmmakers Jayne Loader, Kevin Rafferty and Pierce Rafferty compiled government propaganda, newsreels, educational films — like one that tells students to “duck and cover” if a bomb hits — for a dark comedy. — Raphaela Neihausen and Thom Powers For more information, click here to visit the film web page.

In 1982, the Rafferty brothers put together a documentary about how America's combination of powerful weaponry, careless leaders, propaganda, and willful ignorance would lead us to nuclear annihilation. It somehow feels even more relevant in 2017 than it did during the Cold War. The film is cut together using only test footage, advertisements, propaganda, and other footage from the era. It ranges from bleakly funny (if you like Fallout, this is for you), to unspeakably horrific. Content warning for war crimes and animal cruelty. If you think you can stomach the disturbing content, it's an absolute must-watch.
