Solo sailor, Ella Hibbert, spent this Summer preparing herself and her boat for her upcoming non-stop single-handed circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle; a world-first.But in Ella's own words, 'this is not a record attempt, it's a wake-up call'.Not only is Ella incredibly seaworthy, experienced and capable of such an adventure, it's the first time in history that Arctic Sea ice has receded enough to make these circumnavigations possible...Tune in to hear how Ella's shakedown sailing went and what she learnt about herself, her boat and observations on our changing climate, from the Solent to Svalbard.

Story 211.4 - The Crossharbour Fugitive part three by Hugh Bryant Crossharbour Refuelling Station enables long-distance space travel between distant nebulae, housed on an uninhabited planet that is countless lightyears from the human sector of space. It is operated by the Myrmalir – fungal creatures that emit a phosphorescent glow and live to serve their benevolent ruling force: the Hypogene. The skeleton crew is made up of Bark, the curmudgeonly but devoted senior coordinator counting down the days until he can see his son again, and Bramble, a promising doctoral candidate whose research could change her people's future if she doesn't get distracted by artefacts from the planet's past. Because there is more to this planet than the Hypogene has told them, and an unusual influence is guiding them to discover long-buried secrets. The Moonray has not long left Crossharbour when a colossal tragedy leaves only one survivor: Solent, a junior pilot who is so terrified by what happens that he claims he can't remember anything. A feral force is threatening the continued existence of life in this corner of space, with Crossharbour itself in terrible peril. When trouble with the TARDIS leaves the Doctor and Kim-Ly trapped on Crossharbour, the daily difficulties of adapting to a completely alien way of life is the least of their worries. As a web of deception and danger reveals itself, the travellers must do all they can to survive the consequences of unearthing the truth…

As requested by the man himself, Ep123 is Mr. Drew Campbell... now, a confession, I had a technical brain fart as we started to record and managed to lose all my notes and all my questions so we just went with it... with slight confusion - THERE ARE THINGS THAT WE MISSED... Ella Hibbert (27) decided to postpone her North Pole circumnavigation and set out on a cruise North to Svalbard to test her boat and her self. We met her in Longyearbyen, Svalbard to catch up. This is her mission in 2025 «She will be sailing from Haslar Marina, in the Solent, up the East coast of England, to a start point on the 66.5°N latitude of the Arctic Circle between Norway and Iceland. Then, around Iceland, southern Greenland, the NorthWest Passage through Canada, across Northern Alaska, and into Russian waters. Crossing the Laptev and Kara seas (NorthEast Passage) and eventually back to her starting point near Norway, before heading down the coastline of the UK again to set foot ashore, for the first time since leaving, back in her home base of Haslar Marina, England. « The Arctic expedition has been officially endorsed by the Scientific Exploration Society. You can, and you should follow her and maybe support her. Check out Ella in the Arctic website. Keen on sailing the Norwegian coast? You should be. Read Sail the Norwegian Coast: How and Why you should sail the most beautiful coast in the world – Kindle edition. If you need information about sailing in the high latitudes check out the book I wrote with Bob Shepton: High Latitude Sailing – Self-sufficient sailing techniques for cold waters and winter seasons.

In this episode, Natalie explores the charming coastal area of Calshot in Hampshire, England, and the beach huts that can be found there. She takes listeners on a tour of the area, highlighting the unique features of Calshot Beach and its surroundings. From the historical significance of Calshot Castle to the diverse wildlife at the tidal marshes, she delves into the rich history and natural beauty of the region. KEY TAKEAWAYS Located on the eastern end of Calshot Spit, offering multiple vistas of both land and sea, including views of Southampton Water, the Solent, Cowes on the Isle of Wight, and Southampton. Calshot Beach has a rich history, including being used for war efforts during World War II and having a castle built by King Henry VIII in 1540. Calshot Beach features around 200 privately owned beach huts on leasehold basis to the New Forest District Council, while the Cadland Estate owns a section with larger huts that can accommodate overnight stays. The beach huts at Calshot have unique and creative names, such as "Calshot Candy," "Deja Vu," "Bedlam," "The Mad Hutter," and "Shingle Shacks," reflecting the owners' personalities and lifestyles. Recent sales of beach huts at Calshot Beach ranged from £40,000 to £45,000 for day huts on the New Forest District Council side, while the Cadland Estate side offers luxury huts for rent at over £20,000 for the season or £40,000 for a month. BEST MOMENTS "Calshot Beach is a shingle beach located on the eastern end of Calshot Spit, offering multiple vistas of both land and sea." "The area has a rich history, with beach huts being knocked down during World War II to make space for an RAF base, later reinstated." "Owners on the private side pay ground rent to the Cadland Estate on a two-year lease, with restrictions on overnight stays and hut hiring." "The private side of the beach features large huts with running water and solar power, blurring the line between beach huts and beach houses." "Calshot Beach boasts a variety of creatively named beach huts, from 'Calshot Candy' to 'Shingle Shacks,' adding charm to the seaside experience." HOST BIO My name is Natalie Young. I bought a beach hut to bring joy into my life after escaping an abusive relationship and a difficult divorce. Based in Christchurch, Dorset, my beach hut is affectionally called the Salty Seagull and is located on Friars Cliff beach with sea views to the Needles on the Isle of White. It is my slice of heaven. Owning and hiring a beach hut is more complicated than I realised and I am on a constant mission to discover the best ways to manage and care for your hut. I have researched the pros and cons of renting and the best ways to market and host. The beach, the sights and the sounds of the sea bring me huge joy. I hope this podcast will bring you smiles, laughter and joy too! https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559730024536&sk=about https://www.linkedin.com/company/103555627/admin/feed/posts/?feedType=following PODCAST DESCRIPTION Welcome to the Bonkers about Beach Huts podcast, the show that's all about beach huts! Whether you are thinking of buying a beach hut and don't know where to begin or if you have had a beach hut in your family for generations this podcast is for you. As I travel across the UK exploring these coastal retreats and sharing personal stories of how the humble beach hut has shaped lives, I will also be creating the UK's first beach hut map. I will give tips on where and how to buy a beach hut. And share everything you need to know about beach hut maintenance plus advice on hiring a beach hut. We will be chatting with special guests from estate agents to lock specialists, beach hut associations to beach hut builders, and artists to interior designers. If you don't know what all the fuss is about, join us every week and you too will become a little bit Bonkers Bbout Beach Huts.
Lempuyang Records captain Alastair Kelly is back on the Avenue Red Podcast with his 4th mix contribution for us. Based on the Isle of Wight in the south of England, here he has cast a perfect sonic summer treat across the waters of The Solent for the deep, murky, trippy house heads adrift out there! Features many of our favourite artists and labels from the golden era, as well as some newer inclusions but we are saying slooow, deeeep house and techno, groovy swinging instrumental hip-hop & trip-hop etc. to finish. Serve yourself a cold one, light up a strong one, inhale and observe the magic unfold in the haze. "Lempuyang boss Alastair swings by to inject some doozy warmth into your so-far-shit summer. Expect deepness, pitched right down. Pairs nicely with a minimum of 8 margeritas and an enchilada with an unnecessary number of jalapeños." Nearly half the seasonal workers on farms inspected by the Home Office complained about their treatment... that's one of the findings of an investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism which is published this morning. The Bureau was granted access to reports from 19 farm inspections made between 2021 and 22 after a Freedom of Information battle with the Government - it says 44 % of the 845 workers interviewed by Home Office inspectors raised problems - from racism to being denied medical care and not being paid for all the hours worked. Many livestock marts have moved from city centre sites to the edge of town - and for one of the largest marts in the country in Hereford its been a good move. It's seen sales quadruple since it relocated in 2011 to a purpose built, seven million pound facility on the outskirts of the city. Native oysters used to be plentiful in the Solent, but numbers have declined to almost nothing. Now, environmentalists are trying to encourage re-generation with a five year project. We join local school children as they take part, releasing a thousand young oysters off West Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Professor Lucy Blue chats with maritime archaeologist, Dr Daniel Pascoe about discovering the 17th century 70-gun warship, the HMS Edgar. Dan explains how a combination of boundless determination, in-depth archival research and geophysical investigations helped identify mounds that appeared to be the remains of the ship blown apart by sloppy storage of gun powder. By probing these mounds and digging test pits Dan and his team uncover artefacts and human remains that identified them as remains from the Edgar and the crew who went down with it.

In the 16th century, “strangers” was the name used in England for people who were born in territories not controlled by the Tudor monarchy. Thinking about Henry VIII's armed forces, we might not expect to find “strangers” among them - but there were. In this episode of Not Just the Tudors, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to Professor Catherine Fletcher and Samantha Nelson. Their research into the crew of the Mary Rose - the Tudor warship that sank in the Solent on 19 July 1545 - has revealed some fascinating insights into the origins of the men who served on board. This episode was edited by Stuart Beckwith and produced by Rob Weinberg. For more Not Just The Tudors content, subscribe to our Tudor Tuesday newsletter here.If you'd like to learn even more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe today! This episode of Undercurrent Stories features a conversation I had with Geoff Holt MBE.I first met Geoff in 1984 at Salisbury Spinal Treatment Centre through a mutual friend, Tim Clare. The episode is one of the most inspirational conversations that I have ever had.On 5th September 1984 eighteen year old Geoff dived into an idyllic tropical sea and his life changed forever. A broken neck cut short a promising career as a yachtsman and left him paralysed, with his horizons reduced to an uncertain future in a wheelchair. On 5th September 2007, after a journey of 109 days and 1,445 miles, Geoff crossed the finish line in the Solent off England's south coast and reached the summit of his Personal Everest - The first quadriplegic yachtsman to sail single-handed around Great Britain! In 2007 Geoff became the first quadriplegic yachtsman to sail single handed around Great Britain.Since then Geoff has gone on to receive numerous awards, completed a sail across the Atlantic and formed Wetwheels, an organisation that takes disabled people to sea.For more information about Geoff and Wetwheels please see links below;https://geoffholt.com/https://youtu.be/1_RQqVX88M8Geoff is available as a motivational speaker.www.undercurrentstories.com

In this episode host Iain Ballantyne talks to Andy Benford, a Cold War undersea warrior who saw service in diesel ‘dirty boats' of the British and Australian navies and aboard nuclear submarines, not only in hunter-killers but also the UK's Polaris deterrent force. Aside from Andy's brush with death during a notorious 1972 hovercraft accident in the Solent, they also discuss what inspired him to join the Royal Navy and become a submariner. Starting with service aboard the HMS Finwhale in 1970 - operating out of Singapore, including an exciting encounter with the Special Boat Service (SBS) - by 1977 Andy had graduated to the nuclear navy. As a young officer in HMS Sovereign, he played a key role in Operation Agile Eagle in the late 1970s. This was reputedly the longest trail of a Soviet Submarine in the Cold War, with nuclear-powered hunter-killer submarine HMS Sovereign stealthily following a Yankee Class ballistic missile submarine for weeks in the Atlantic. After that, in 1980 came the famed, and ruthless, Perisher submarine command course - also discussed - after which Andy was posted ashore to work in a nuclear blast-proof bunker at the Fleet HQ of the Royal Navy. Next Andy commands the Australian diesel submarine HMAS Oxley, with his exploits including taking part in a Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise off Hawaii in 1984, during which his boat ‘sank' a US Navy carrier. After all that excitement in diesels and attack submarines, Andy became second-in-command of a Polaris missile submarine, deploying in HMS Revenge for five nuclear deterrent patrols between 1986 and 1990. Overall Andy provides a deeply fascinating insight into the life in a steel tube packed with cutting-edge tech and weapons. In addition, our guest has distinguished himself in recent times by devising a board game inspired by his life under the sea, called ‘They Come Unseen', prototypes of which were ‘road-tested' under the sea on submarine patrol. • Andy Benford is on Twitter @Perisher80 • Iain Ballantyne is the Editor of WARSHIPS International Fleet Review magazine. When the Mary Rose was first pulled from the Solent, you could be forgiven for thinking that what had been salvaged was just a “pile of old wood”. But, over the years, incredible developments in conservation and analysis have revealed the wreck to be a precious historical resource, allowing us to discover more than we could have imagined. In this final episode, Emily Briffett speaks to Christopher Dobbs, Professor Eleanor Schofield and Dr Alex Hildred to understand the complex conservation processes behind keeping the wreck alive. As Henry VIII stood along the walls of Southsea Castle on 19 July 1545, the air was hot and still. Yet, England was on the brink of disaster, as an enormous French fleet had arrived with revenge on their minds. In this episode, we're zeroing in on the pivotal moment when the Mary Rose met its ignominious end at the battle of the Solent. Emily Briffett speaks to Hannah Matthews, Dr Dominic Fontana and Dr Tracy Borman to find out what caused the Tudor warship to sink on what should have been a short, easy voyage. Hosted on Acast. The Mary Rose had a long life before its fighting days were brought to an abrupt end as it sank to the bottom of the Solent. Rewinding back almost 500 years, Emily Briffett speaks to Dr Tracy Borman and Dr Dominic Fontana to revisit the Mary Rose in its heyday – from the first shots fired, through the political crises of the early 16th century, right up to its downfall. Forty years ago on 11 October 1982, after 437 years under water, Henry VIII's warship, the Mary Rose, was raised from the seabed of the Solent. But how was such a remarkable feat achieved? How did they go about conserving a Tudor warship and the many objects which were on board? And what has been learned about the people who went down with her?In the second part of Not Just the Tudors' mini-series to mark the 40th anniversary of the raising of the Mary Rose, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is in Portsmouth to find out more from Dr. Alexandra Hildred - who was part of the team that excavated the Mary Rose; Professor Eleanor Schofield, the Deputy Chief Executive at the Mary Rose Trust; and Hannah Matthews, a Curator and osteoarchaeologist who has been closely examining the Mary Rose's human remains. The Senior Producer was Elena Guthrie. Exactly forty years ago, in a groundbreaking and spectacular piece of marine conservation that captured the imagination of the world, the Mary Rose was raised from the seabed. The warship, commissioned by Henry VIII in 1511, sank on 19 July 1545 during an encounter between French and English fleets in the Solent, between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. Perhaps up to 500 men were on board, only 34 survived. In the first of three specials marking the 40th anniversary of the raising of the Mary Rose, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb travels to Portsmouth to find out why the Mary Rose sank. She's joined by Dr. Dominic Fontana, Retired Senior Lecturer in Geography formerly at the University of Portsmouth, and Dr. Alexandra Hildred, Head of Research and Curator of Ordnance and Human Remains at the Mary Rose Trust. The Senior Producer was Elena Guthrie. Kathy Clugston hosts the horticultural programme. Pippa Greenwood, Matthew Wilson, and Christine Walkden answer the questions. This week the panellists suggest some easy-to-grow Euphorbias, as well as giving hope to one gardener whose Mimosa was destroyed in recent storms. They also puzzle over a lack of Granny's Bonnets this year, and come up with planting ideas for creating a screen. Away from the questions, Matthew Wilson speaks to Exbury Gardens head gardener Tom Clarke to learn about ericaceous soil, and the brilliant rhododendrons that grow from it.
