In this episode, I speak with Lucy Clark, who has recently completed a trek along the Te Araroa Trail.... This runs the length of New Zealand... an over 3,000km journey! Lucy and I talk a little bit about her training, nutrition, mental/physical feelings, and so much more. Lucy speaks about appreciating the journey, rather than focusing so much on pace which is a great lesson to learn. Granted, she was going for an FKT (fastest known time), but she did find time to enjoy the journey she was undertaking. Lucy averaged about a marathon every day with ONLY ONE DAY OFF. Takeaways: 1. Planning is everything. You have to have a roadmap when you are planning something huge-- especially if you want to do well. 2. The plan can go out the window. Even if it's something like nutrition. But you have to think on your feet and figure out how to modify. 3. GET YOUR REST. Someone like Lucy who runs this much, you want to listen to her recovery tips.... Sleep is her biggest go to for recovery because that's how your body will recover. 4. Sometimes, the thought of something is worse than the thing itself. Your mind will play up on you but don't let it win. 5. Take the time to appreciate the things that truly matter... Even when you are in the thick of something incredibly challenging, you CAN take time to enjoy the important things in your life. 6. If you have a dream, go for it. Set your mind to it and set up your plan. Commit to it and anything is possible. In this episode, I speak with Nick Groff of Ghost Adventures, #Paranormal Lockdown, Paranormal Lockdown UK, Ghosts Of Shepherdstown, and more. Nick is also a Spartan race enthusiast. Listen as we speak about how he got into paranormal #investigations, some of his experiences, as well as his #fitness journey and views on being the best version of himself. Some Takeaways: 1. Always be open to learn more and push yourself further. 2. What ripple effect will you cause? How will you affect this world in a positive way? 3. Fitness can help you balance out the negativity and, sometimes, energy draining realities of daily life. 4. It's you against you... What can you learn about your performance and use that to improve your personal race? 5. You must start with your mindset and figure out what you want. Stick with what works for you and what motivates you. What gets you excited? 6. Set constant goals for yourself and don't be complacent. In this episode, I speak with Jarod Cogswell, the Sport and Education Director of Dekafit... Spartan's newest event in its quest to rip 100,000,000 people of the couch and into a healthier lifestyle. #Spartan has long been associated with being the world's greatest #OCR and the constant evolution of it, leads to exciting new things all the time! Dekafit will be an indoor #decathlon (Dekathlon) style event that will lead you to new ways of getting inspired and motivated. It is for ALL #fitness levels and it will take your performance to a completely new level, leading you to victory in your own right. The Dekafit event will teach you to set constant goals for yourself, ensuring that you are always growing and improving. You will find a new way to #exercise and set goals with PURPOSE, which is the key to sticking with anything. Each Dekafit event will have zones that will push you out of your comfort zone and set you on a path to victory. DEKA Zones (each preceded by 500m run): 1. Ram Squat 2. 500m Row 3. Box Jump Over x 20 4. Med Ball Throw x 20 5. Ski Erg x 500m (concept 2) 6. Farmer's Carry x 100m 7. Air Assault Bike x 20 calories 8. Dead Ball Wall Over x 20 9. Tank Sled Push x 10 10. Ram Burpees x 20 Some great takeaways from this conversation to put toward your journey: 1. Have a strong enough reason to keep going. Set constant goals. What is your WHY? 2. Compete against YOURSELF. What can you do to improve your personal "Dekamark"? 3. Climb your personal mountain to get to the top. Set your target and go for it. Don't sell yourself short. Strive to get to the top... ALWAYS. 4. Find the belief, within yourself, to know that you can do these things and find the discipline to go above and beyond. 5. Be the version of yourself that you want to be. Don't wait for it. Go and GRAB IT! In this episode, Andrew’s on a break and that’s okay. But Zac Domagalski is behind the microphone and only time will tell if that’s a good idea... Listen in and keep the good times going as we celebrate members of the BTB community going above and beyond. Plus listen to Zac talk about the challenge of not being good at something straight away and having to learn to accept it. If you dare, take a drink every time he mentions “Andrew” or “community”. In this episode, I recap a bit of my Spartan Trifecta weekend and I also talk training tips and more! Come along with me as I trek through the crazy journey that is a Spartan Race! 1. Embrace the community around you to help you keep going. They are right there in struggle town with you and know what you're going through. Finish together. 2. No Matter how hard it is, you can tough it out. Know when to be safe about it... But you can do it! 3. The pain won't last forever. As bad as it can be, it will pass. You will refresh and rejuvenate and be able to move forward strong. Pain is temporary... Pride is forever. Training Tips 1. Cross Train: Focus on what areas you don't usually focus on. If you run a lot, focus on adding in strength and mobility. If you are a weight lifter, add in the endurance, etc... 2. Nutrition: Hydrate is key! Bring your own hydration. Also get used to fueling with some sort of energy source like a gel or nutrition bar, etc. This will give you the energy to continue on. 3. Strength Training: This is key. Your obstacles are all strength based. So get to the gym at least 3-4 times a week and work on strength. Full body is great and DEFINITELY work with grip strength. 4. RUN: Put in the miles. Do easy runs, speed workouts, HIIT... All of it will help. 5. Train for the terrain: Figure out what sort of race your Spartan is... Flat, Trail, etc... Train on that sort of terrain (run, walk, hike) at least once per week. In this episode, I chat with Brendan Spasovski about his career as an actor and his university journey. A truly hard worker, Brendan shares a little bit about what makes him tick and how he goes about working toward his dreams. Some takeaways: 1. Biggest regrets are those risks we don’t take. 2. If you have the opportunity to go for your dreams, do it… Weigh out the realities of what you’re about to do… But if you can, do! 3. If you’re ever in a position where people don’t take you seriously, show them your true work ethic and what you are ready to do and how hard you will work. 4. Sometimes you have to go with your gut and make a call… Act now, ask for forgiveness later Brendan's Instagram: @brendanspasovski Sponsors: Generation UCAN: Generation UCAN is the smarter #energy#energy #nutrition#nutrition that is powered by SuperStarch, a slow-release complex carbohydrate that uniquely delivers steady, long-lasting energy to keep you fueled and feeling good! In this episode, I speak with Isobel Ross about her ultra running career and, more specifically, her experience with the Barkley Marathons... The race that eats its young. Listen to Isobel speak about her experience form navigating the entry process, to getting to the infamous yellow gate, to meeting Lazarus Lake, and everything in between. Here are some takeaways from this episode: 1. Solve problems as they came up. Sometimes you just have to be a problem solver and you can't look at the start to finish as a simple journey. Things will come up and you need to be ok to address them. 2. Even though you prepare for best case scenario, worst case scenario can still happen. That's racing--- That's life. It's not the end of the world. Accept both possibilities. But enjoy the ride no matter what. 3. Take each failure as a learning opportunity. If you can objectively look at what went wrong, you will be able to figure out how to improve yourself for next time. 4. Find the fun moments in even the hardest challenges. You can find positives in everything so make sure to appreciate them. 5. It's not always just about the technical skills... You have to dig deeper to find out the most you can about yourself. Even someone like Isobel Ross has had the thought "not me, I couldn't do that...". But you can! 6. Sometimes it's best to worry about the consequences later, and just see what happens if you go for it NOW. Act now, beg for forgiveness later ;). In this episode, I speak with Nick Jankovskis of METS Performance about VO2 Max and why it's so important to know about as a fitness oriented individual. Pulled from their website, "a VO₂ max test determines your body's maximum ability to take up, transport and utilise oxygen. Basically, it determines how much work/power output your body can complete aerobically, with a higher value indicating that more work can be done. It is a key performance indicator for endurance sports such as triathlon, cycling, running, swimming, rowing and cross country skiing due to its crucial role in endurance performance." Nick takes us through a bit of the process of the test and how you can use the information to improve your efficiency as an athlete. Some of the benefits of knowing your VO2 Max include: 1. Knowing the best zones to train in, in terms of heart rate. 2. Maximizing training efficacy, rather than just running to run. 3. Turning your weaknesses in the strength. 4. Developing your physiology to utilize oxygen more efficiently. In this episode, I will take you along with me on my journey through marathon #3. Listen to me as I run through the streets of Melbourne for that 26.2 mile (42.2 km)journey and hear exactly how I was feeling from start to finish. Plus, in this episode, I will also play for you a behind the scenes chat I had with Trevor and Angie Spencer of the Marathon Training Academy. 1. No matter what's going on, you have to enjoy what is about to unfold. Enjoy the anticipation and the journey. 2. Nerves are NORMAL! Use the nervous energy to focus and channel the adrenaline to keep you going. Don't let it take over you completely... But visualize a great race. 3. Pay attention to the people trying to help you along the way. It will take your mind off your pain and it will help you get through what you are undertaking. Make sure you think as many of them as you can. Gratitude is incredibly important. 4. Sometimes all you can do is keep moving. It's not always possible to get the time you wanted but as long as you keep going, you can still appreciate the good things around you. 5. The support will be there when you need it. It will flood in when you least expect it and it will help you continue on your way. 6. Roll with the punches and reevaluate when needed. It's ok to change things around if something isn't going the way it should... You have to be able to alter things. Be flexible and go with what you can! 7. Find the silver lining and laugh off what you can. In ever negative situation, you can find something positive... Even if it's a lesson learned-- it's something. Figure out what that is and focus on it! 8. It's darkest just before the dawn. Sometimes, right before things go your way, it'll seem like everything is going downhill... But, remember, you can come out on the other side and, many times, it gets worse right before it gets better! In this episode, I was extremely fortunate to secure a conversation with Trevor and Angie Spencer, of the Marathon Training Academy. Trevor and Angie started MTA almost 10 years ago (in 2010) and, ever since, they have been a beacon to, not only Marathon runners, but the entire running community. Their podcast is something that has inspired me over and over. They have endless information to bring knowledge to runners everywhere. From their community, the Academy, coaching services, and wealth of knowledge and guests, they have so many useful and invaluable resources to truly show you that "you have what it takes to run a marathon and change your life", as their motto so passionately states. Throughout this episode, we spoke about many things including what drives them, some of their fondest memories, some of their most challenging memories, and just what they have seen throughout the years. Seasoned runners, themselves, they know just what it takes to put in those miles and come out on the other side. TAKE AWAY HIGHLIGHTS 1. MTA formulates a comprehensive system to help people get through their half marathons and marathons, utilizing everything from nutrition, to training, to mindset, and everything else in between. 2. You need to know your "why". Knowing your why will help you stay focused and ensure that you are much less likely to quit along the way. Figure out a "sticky" why, that inner drive and motivation, that will motivate you to go for it. 3. You can absolutely learn to love something that scares you or you don't like... Or have discomfort doing. If you stick with things, you can totally change your life and discover amazing things about yourself. Climb your Everest. 4. Central Governor Theory (Tim Noakes)- Fatigue has much more to do with your brain than you might realise. Once you can recognise that, you can change your habits with "mental Jiu Jitsu. 5. Just know, you CAN get through it. "You can do hard things..." And no matter how long you have been doing something, you can become better and achieve greatness, always. 6. You're not alone. Everyone is going through their own "races". Know that you can get through it and there's a network of people ready to help you. 6. Remember, "you have what it takes to run a marathon and change your life..." In this episode, follow me along my last long run before the Melbourne Marathon and learn what I learned as I went. Sometimes, the lessons we learn are different and some are the same as they are applied in different ways. Every opportunity is a learning opportunity and you can always pull for past experiences... This is what I have to pull from mine. 1. Altering the plan based on feel can be beneficial. Listen to your body and listen to what your mind is telling you. Even though the mental game may waiver first, it isn't a bad thing to really listen. Don't use is as an excuse but use it as a way to be smart. Trust that you've put in the work. Trust that process. 2. Don't cheat yourself. The clock will reflect the truth in us all. You have to figure out how to make up the time or let it go. Pausing your watch on a run and picking it up won't show a true reflection of your run with stop breaks. Sounds silly but it's worth taking note of. 3. Appreciate how far you've come. Look back on your journey and look at the improvements. It's ok sometimes to brag to yourself. You have to give yourself credit where credit is due! 4. Help comes from unexpected places. Sometimes a boost can come to help you realise you're not alone and this can really help carry you a little bit further. It can help you discover what you didn't realise you had inside and it might even push you to new heights. You're never alone and help will always be there when you need it. 5. Nothing wrong with changing things up. You may have to change things up for several reasons. The more you can train your body and mind in different ways, the stronger you will become. In this episode, I talk about the feeling of being overworked, the feeling of stress, and the feeling of anxiety. These things can pop up really quickly and we need to know how to deal with them or they can turn catastrophic. Some take away bullet points to help you along the way: 1. Identify your stressors: Keep a journal and identify the situations that create the most stress and how you respond. 2. Develop healthy responses: practice mindfulness, exercise, healthy activities, etc... 3. Establish boundaries: Figure out your work/life balance and stick to some kind of plan. Beware of the DIGITAL AGE! 4. Talk to your supervisor: Have a chat with your supervisor to ensure your own mental health. If you feel overburdened, try to develop a strategy for moving forward in a less stressful way. 5. Get support: Get support from work, family, friends, etc... Talk it out and let them know you need help. Asking for help is OK. 6. Take time to recharge and learn to relax: Take the time to recover mentally and physically. It's important. Sort out a schedule to help you reset the cycle. In this Episode, I speak with Simon Clark and Zac Domagalski about the Strava craze and how it can affect us as runners, team mates, and human beings. We touch on social media, the reasons why we are hesitant to put up slow runs, what happens if we can't upload our runs, and much more! Some key points to take away: 1. One bad run won't define you.. Look at the positive runs. 2. Becoming self-aware is incredibly important to understanding your fears and obsessions. 3. See if you can go a period of time without justifying your "slower runs"... Which could be actual runs, or missing a workout, or even slipping on your daily habits. 4. Missing something like a run is not the end of the world as long as you remember you can pick up where you left off. 5. Routine and consistency will always lead to success as long as you stick with it. In this episode, I interview Cara Schaefer, full time mom, fitness enthusiast, musician, former teacher, and believer in mindfulness & taking time out to refresh as needed. She also, of course, plays a major role in the production of Grease I'm in... That, of course, is the role of Sandy. During the rehearsal process, I have seen her show up time and again completely prepared and on point... THAT being with half the rehearsal time (you'll have to listen to understand why). Today's episode deals with the issues we all face, specifically time and priorities, while still taking care of yourself. With everything going on in her life, she always comes back to how important it is to make time for oneself... It's a necessary thing that will allow you to keep the ability to stay focused and properly take care of those around you and stick to your plan and goals. Things to Remember: 1. Learn to prioritise yourself, even if it's only a few minutes a day. To take care of others, you need to be able to take care of yourself. MAKE THE TIME. 2. Mindfulness and quiet time is a must. When you can't have it, try to accept what's going on and "roll with the punches". It's ok to delay things sometimes... 3. BREATHE. Sometimes, you just have to focus on your breathing...If you get stressed or overwhelmed, check your breath. 4. "Try not singing the song the same way twice"... That can relate to life by learning different things each time you do something... Can you do it in a more exciting way? Can you make it feel different in terms of emotions? You'll be able to grow your skill set by developing multiple ways of doing things. 5. Instead of comparing yourself to others, what can you LEARN from others? 6. There is no replacement for hard work. Sometimes, you just have to do the hard things to get to where you want to be. There's no easy fix. In This Episode, I speak about the different terms you come across in the running world. Some are a bit more technical than others but all of them have their place. Special thanks to Marathon Training Academy for allowing me to use the "Slang Section" from their archive as well... You can find a list to "the most exhaustive list of running terms on the internet" here: https://www.marathontrainingacademy.com/running-terminology Here is a list of some of the more important highlights... For a complete list, be sure to listen in to episode 40! DISTANCES 1. A kilometer is equal to 1000 meters. 2. A mile is equal to 1600 meters. 3. A 5k is equal to 3.1 miles 4. A 10k is equal to 6.2 miles 5. A Marathon is equal to 26.2 miles or 42.195 kilometers TRAINING/ MISC. TERMS 1. This is something you can hold for longer periods, strengthening your endurance. 2. These types of workouts are not able to be held for long distances. Great for speed workouts and working on your VO2 Max. 3. Bonking (Hitting the Wall)- Feeling of fatigue due to the depletion of glycogen workouts on a longer workout. Fueling is important to prevent this. 4. DNF- Did not finish. 5. DNS- Did not start. 6. In This episode, I speak about some of the types of training runs that I utilize in my programs for race training. These runs are great to give you plenty of variety in getting into shape and making your body as strong and injury-resistant as possible! Here are some of the runs that you will be able to hear about in the episode: 1. Base Run This is your natural pace and will make up a bulk of your running. Not too challenging and not too slow. 2. Progression Run My favourite! Use these runs to train yourself to have a strong finish. Get progressively faster as you run through your mileage. 3. Long Run This is one of the most important runs on your training plan. This will build your endurance for running longer distances. Keep these at conversation pace and not too quick. 4. Fartlek "Fartlek" is a Swedish term for "speed play"... These are great to break up your runs. No rules... Just pick a short distance and pick up the pace to activate your fast twitch muscles to make them stronger for speed. 5. Intervals Structured speed work that will focus on strengthening your speed. For example, run 5 x 800 meters with 1-2 minutes rest in between. 6. Tempo Run These are your "comfortably hard" runs. Pick a distance (shorter in nature... no longer than 6-8 miles) and run it with a pace that you can hit the distance, but not be able to go much further. For example, if your natural pace is a 10 minute mile, this may be an 8 minute pace 7. Hill Repeats These will build your leg strength. Basically, pick a hill and run up it a few times! For example, hill run then a minute to 2 minutes recovery time. Very short distances... These shouldn't last longer than 30 seconds to a minute. 8. Recovery/ Easy Run These runs are there for recovery. Keep them nice and easy... Slower than you think. If your natural pace is a 10:00 minute, run these at a 10:30-13:00 minute pace. These are all discussed much more in depth on the episode! See you there! In this episode, I speak about the long distance run and how you can make it go by a bit more quickly and how you can make the most out of it. By using these techniques, you can move forward and have less chance of injury. 1. Mindset: Focus on the positives of your run and visualize your route using milestones, fueling tactics, etc... 2. Focus on nutrition and hydration: Think about your nutrition to keep yourself running strong. Try not to overdo it and get used to what works well with your body. 3. Pace yourself: Don't race your run. Try to keep your pace about a minute to 90 seconds per mile/kilometer slower than race pace. You can use sections for race pace but for the most part, it shouldn't be race pace. 4. Break the run into sections: Break it into 3 x 10km sections rather than one long 30km run. Have fun with it. Use one section as race pace or fartleks or warm up, etc... Think about rewarding yourself after the run! 5. Figure out fueling: Figure out when you will fuel and look forward to that. How will you fuel? 6. Figure out post-run nutrition: Your post run meal should be a combination of carbs, protein, fat, and electrolytes to strengthen your body back to recovery mode.
