This week, I sat down with one of the most legendary and successful screenwriters/producers in Hollywood, Oscar® Winner Eric Roth. Over a 50+ years career, he's well-known for writing or producing films like Forrest Gump, A Star is Born, Mank, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Munich, Ali, and the list goes on. The critically and commercially acclaimed American drama, Forrest Gump is an adaptation of Winston Groom's 1986 novel of the same title, adapted by Eric Roth in 1994. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump, played by the incomparable, Tom Hanks, a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the 20th century the United States. The $55 million budget film grossed $683.1 million at the Box Office and won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and three Golden Globes awards. With a dream to pursue writing, he got his start working crew on a bunch of independent movies being made by some experimental filmmakers at a local studio (the Millennium will film workshop) while studying at Columbia University and later transferred to UCLA Film School. While on the climb up, Roth got the opportunity through his good friend Stuart Rosenberg, to rewrite the script for the Paul Newman movie, The Drowning Pool, at the tender age of 20 years old.Last year, Roth co-produced the multi-award nomination biographical drama, Mank. mank earned ten Oscar® nominations and six Golden Globe Awards nominations.1940. Film studio RKO hires 24-year-old wunderkind Orson Welles under a contract that gives him full creative control of his movies. For his first film, he calls in washed-up alcoholic Herman J Mankiewicz to write the screenplay. That film is "Citizen Kane," and this is the story of how it was written.A Star is Born, co-written by Roth became a 2018 phenomenon. Director, co-writer and lead actor, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga brought steaming chemistry to our screens in a way that had been lacking. The film grossed twelve times its $36 million budget which is more than any of the other three versions of the musical romantic drama film.Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) discovers, and falls in love with struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer - until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.A must mention amongst Roth’s screenplays is the 2008 screenplay adaptation of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Academy winner Mahershala Ali and Taraji P. Henson. The film tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backward with consequences. I could go on and on, through the extensive list of incredible writing Eric Roth has given the world, but you can listen to our conversation to hear all about them. Even his Television writing and producing on shows like House of Cards, The Alienist, and the upcoming remake of the science fiction classic Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve.I've been a fan of Eric's work since my days working at a video store. It was truly an honor to sit down and talk shop with a master of the craft. Enjoy my conversation with Eric Roth.

In Episode #31, co-hosts Bita and Beata have an informative conversation with Omid Roustaei, known as the Caspian Chef. Omid is an author, food blogger, recipe developer, chef and cooking instructor, among other things. In this episode Omid shares about the vibrant, fresh, vegetable and herb-forward dishes of northern Iran in the Caspian Sea region. The foods of this region are also known as “Shomali” in Farsi. Omid’s background - Omid’s parents are from Babol (in the Mazandaran Province). He grew up eating primarily traditional Persian foods and specifically some foods of the Caspian Sea region. Omid has been blogging for almost 3 years in this space. His background transitioned from cancer research towards prevention which led him to study health through food. Omid went to a plant-based, vegetable focussed cooking school in Boulder Colorado. He then gained experience as a private chef and with teaching cooking classes. His passion is in bridging the cultural gap between Western culture and Iranian culture through food. Foods of the Caspian Sea region as described by Omid Plant-forward with most of the dishes starting with and based on vegetables and herbs Herbs local to the region in Farsi: Cho-chag, khalvash, ooji (also known as fersem or soosan ambor) Herbs treated as vegetables and used in abundance (bunches and bunches of herbs vs used as a garnish) Using herbs for flavor instead of relying on spices for flavor (most dishes have only salt, pepper, turmeric, then loads of fresh herbs), plus garlic! Region specific dishes shared by Omid “Morgh e Torsch” - Sour Chicken Chicken, parsley, cilantro, mint, chives, walnuts, sour grape juice, bitter seville orange juice Anar Bij Pomegranate walnuts, fresh herbs, ground meatballs Described by Omid as “Fesenjoon with swag!” Bij bij (also known as vaveeshka) Seasoned ground meat (salt, pepper, turmeric, garlic), fried onions, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, poached eggs - all served over steaming mound of rice Mella Ghormeh - Eggplant dish with herbs and poached eggs White flesh fish (mahi sefid) Fried - tender & buttery Mahi Shekam Por A very large fish stuffed with the following ingredients; barberries, walnuts, herbs, fish rooh, then tied and baked in the oven Ask the Beats! Question asked by the Caspian Chef: “What are your thoughts on traditional cooking tools, traditions and approaches that require skill, patience, and labor, vs time saving tricks and getting things done faster - what do you prefer and what are your thoughts on the matter?” Bita’s response: Tries to make traditional recipes in a way that is practical in her everyday life, while respecting what it is and not changing it too much. She tries to make it healthier and easier. Ultimately anticipating that Persian food in Western culture may change just as how Mexican food in the US is different from traditional foods in Mexico, and how Chinese food in the US is different from what people actually eat in homes in China. Beata’s response: Loves food and appreciates authentic Persian cooking but current lifestyle limits her being able to cook the traditional recipes at home. Just as the Caspian Sea regional foods were influenced by what was accessible, she has the same approach to the foods she cooks in her kitchen. She is proud of the foods she makes and shares on her blog, by using substitutions that still hold the integrity of the dish but with time saving shortcuts. Seasoned podcasters have learned to expect a delay between time-of-publish and when the latest episode will publicly appear in various directories. But we’ve assumed that subscribers/followers bypass the public directory update so our episodes arrive on the devices of those listeners within minutes of publishing. We’re wrong about that. James Cridland of Podnews has an https://podnews.net/update/apple-podcasts-crawler-frequency (excellent breakdown of the infrastructure change Apple has put in place that exacerbates this problem for podcasting). Specifically, Apple is determining which shows are worthy of lighting-fast updates, and which podcasts are not worthy. Surprising absolutely no one, podcasts with much larger audiences that publish content on a very frequent basis are deemed by Apple as more worthy of more rapid updates than the rest of us plebes. If you are as troubled by this as I was troubled by this when I learned of it, you’ll be more troubled—as I was—to learn this is how just about every podcast directory works. It’s not just Apple. Podcast directory developers write algorithms to evaluate the worthiness of each show in their catalog based on a variety of factors to determine the optimal update frequency for that show on their platform. If your podcast isn’t deemed as worthy, your episodes will take longer to get onto the devices of your listeners who use that directory. In hindsight, I think we all knew something like this was happening in podcasting. Many of us didn’t give it too much thought because we wrongly assumed we could bypass the slow lane by getting our listeners to subscribe to/follow our shows. But we can no longer safely assume that. The reason we can't trust podcast directories to deliver our content in a timely fashion is because it’s not a one-to-one relationship. We think it is, but it’s not. The directory sits in the middle, and they control the terms of the relationship. Not us. Not our listeners. But email is a one-to-one relationship. Yeah, I know you don’t want to listen to a podcast in Outlook. Neither do I, so I’m not suggesting you stop publishing an RSS feed or anything resembling that behavior. Instead, I’m—once again—suggesting you start establishing a one-to-one email-based relationship with as many of your listeners as you can. ----- A written-to-be-read article and a full transcript of the audio of this episode can be found at https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/pondering-podcastings-partiality-problem (https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/pondering-podcastings-partiality-problem) https://twitter.com/evoterra (Follow @EvoTerra on Twitter) for more podcasting insights as they come. https://buymeacoffee.com/evoterra (Buy him a virtual coffee) to show your support at BuyMeACoffee.com/evoterra And if you need a professional in your podcasting corner, please visithttps://podcastlaunch.pro/ ( Simpler.Media) to see how Simpler Media Productions can help you reach your business objectives with podcasting. Episode 275: The Transformation of Alison Cromie, Part 1 of 3 “Healthy relationships are like healthy bodies,” writes Dr. Melanie Joy. “They thrive when their immune system is stronger than the germs they are exposed to.” Alison Cromie of Cromie Creative Consultants is a remarkable example of withstanding and bouncing back from stressful and trauma imposing situations. She is the definition of resiliency.Once you hear the first part of her transformation, you will understand why focusing on website redesigns with wellness practitioners makes so much sense. Alison’s upbringing is one of the more complex ones. There is a lot of relationships and dynamics to navigate. Parent divorces and remarriages, blending of families, moves, chronic health crises of both parents, accidents. Adding to the mix of relational complexity is a male adolescent babysitter who found a young Alison to sexualize while her parents were going through a divorce.Alison speaks of her complex upbringing with compassion toward her parents and appreciation of another family who role-modeled functionality as they awaited news of a plane crash. You won’t hear a blaming voice or a child speaking from an adult body. You will hear the voice of someone asserting herself as a teenager by refusing to go through Catholic confirmation because her questions were not satisfactorily answered. Some might call this acting out and force their child through the process. Her devoutly Catholic father could have done that. Instead, he listened to his daughter and found her reasoning sound. He allowed her to form her own beliefs and practice her faith and spirituality in a way that makes sense to her. This was the launching pad Alison needed to steadily take charge of her experiences, seeing them as learning opportunities. The picture coming into view of a thousand-piece puzzle is a beautiful, vibrant woman entrepreneur coming into an adult self. The opposite of healthy relationships is what Dr. Melanie Joy describes as ' dysfunctional relating'. “A pattern of insecure, disconnecting relating.” To disrupt dysfunctional relating, we need to interrupt the pattern by focusing on a secure connecting way of relating and meeting needs more directly, no competing. An easy concept to understand; it takes creativity to implement. How can you gently yet firmly set boundaries by disrupting a conversation? Or how can you listen for words of disconnection and shift the relating into a connecting conversation? Those questions reminded me of the Netflix documentary about Tony Robbins when an audience participant was describing his depression. Tony Robbins interrupts the participant’s narrative by starting a conversation about his red tennis shoes. A major thought-pattern disruptor. Everyone paused for a moment. This participant went on to have a significant breakthrough with his state of depression. Clever, right? It took a moment to shift into a connecting way of relating that made us witnesses feel secure. After that disruption, the interactions between the two of them were healthy so the participant’s transformation could gain traction.Today’s conversation is the first part of Alison’s transformative journey. I thought I might feel overwhelmed at the end of our first conversation, but no. We maintained a confident and relational tone. Alison expresses her life story with focus, ease, and openness. I felt, when I relistened, an enticing desire to know more of how Alison’s life will continue to unfold as she secures healthy relationships. We leave you with three marketing tips for emerging entrepreneurs. I’m dedicating this episode to the courageous and unapologetic Black woman, Asia Barnes, coach of the University of Arizona Women’s Basketball team. Thank you for being a fierce, passionate, and loving competitor and for representing the Pac-12 conference with excellence. Welcome to Seasoned with Salt Podcast. This is Dominique Beaumonte, your host. Every Monday, I am bringing a motivational thought, inspired by God's word, to keep you grounded, empowered, and courageously moving towards your goals! Did you watch the 2021 NCAA College women’s basketball championship? The Stanford Cardinals played the Arizona Wildcats in a historic game between two Conference rivals who had already place twice. The Wildcats were down one point with 6 seconds to go in the game. They had the ball but couldn’t convert. Time ran out and the Cardinal wins. After the game, they asked Arizona’s coach, Asia Barnes, about the last heartbreaking moments of the game. She said; “Against great teams like Stanford, we have to be a little bit better at the small things. It doesn't ever come down to the last shot. It comes down to the missed free throws down the stretch, the foul on the three-point shot, getting the turnovers and not converting. It's those things. It's never the last play, but it obviously just stings pretty bad.” Losing can have a detrimental impact on our future efforts to win. If the team spends every day focusing on the last mistake they made, they will be grossly unprepared for the next season. So the challenge becomes: Don’t be crippled by your last shot Winning has to be the byproduct of wholistic Preparation. Every action matters. This week, we will have the choice to labor on what we lost or focus on how to win. So this week, every play matters. Discipline is the name of the game. 1. This week, Don’t be lazy. Ecclesiastes 9:10 - Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for [there is] no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. 2. Prioritize God over your plan Proverbs 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD, And your thoughts will be established. 3. Put your plan to work with the three Ps: Prayer, Practice and People! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/seasonedwithsalt/support

Frank Rauch joins Channelnomics’ Changing Channels host Larry Walsh to discuss best practices for gaining top-down support from corporate executive leadership for channel strategies and programs. Executives from the CEO to sales leadership at technology companies often talk about the value of their channel partners in their success equation. Many corporate executives say that they couldn’t achieve their goals without channel partners’ contributions. In reality, faith in the channel is elusive. According to Channelnomics’ annual Channel Chief Outlook report, one in five channel chiefs is under high pressure to demonstrate the value of channel programs. Most channel professionals say they’re challenged in proving to their company’s leadership that the channel has value. Seasoned channel chiefs say a critical factor in operating a productive channel program is having the support of the C-suite. Frank Rauch, head of worldwide channel sales at Check Point Software Technologies, has made gaining executive support a hallmark of his career. At Check Point, and at HP and VMware, Rauch used strategic alignment, key performance indicators, personal relationships, and demonstrable results to prove the value of the channel and earn executive support. Seasoned guitarist Marko Tervonen from the Swedish death metal outfit, The Crown, is our guest in this episode. Having been playing in the band for 30 years, while undergoing different lineups, name changes, and breakups – Marko is more than grateful that The Crown has overcome many hurdles in it's storied timeline before releasing the new upcoming 10th album, “Royal Destroyer”. Many topics explored in this in-depth back and forth conversation with Marko, from the live concerts played worldwide to the pandemic and to the new album and beyond. Tune into this episode with Marko now and make sure to pick up the new album from The Crown out everywhere March 12th on Metal Blade Records.

Jockey didn’t make my most anticipated list of Sundance, because frankly, horse movies usually depress me. The horse always gets injured or dies or gets injured and then dies and who amongst us really needs that kind of heartbreak right now? Well shame on me for judging In a surprising turn, I don’t even really remember much about a horse in Jockey. I mean, there definitely is a horse and there is definitely horse racing but the tragedy is wrapped up in the self-destructive addiction to a profession, which he believes gives him purpose. In so many ways it’s reminiscent of Sound of Metal, in that you’ll be tightly clenching your teeth and yelling “JUST STOP” with exasperation, for most of the film. A bit more about Jockey from the festival program Seasoned horse jockey Jackson (Clifton Collins Jr.) has weathered decades of races on the riding circuit, but he now finds himself facing what could be his last season as his health deteriorates. With the help of Ruth (Molly Parker) and a promising new horse, Jackson starts to prepare for the upcoming championship. His plans take a left turn when a budding young jockey (Moisés Arias) shows up and claims to be his son. Caught between yearning for a connection and uncertainty about his own future, Jackson confronts difficult questions regarding his legacy. Shot at a live racetrack and with a keen eye for veracity, Jockey gives us an achingly personal window into a world we’ve never seen up close before, where fortunes are flipped upside down from one moment to the next and the freedom of riding comes at a grueling physical price. Collins delivers an intimately layered performance guided by director Clint Bentley, whose own experiences imbue authenticity and naturalism into this moving portrait of a sport unlike any other. Clifton Collins Jr. undoubtedly gives an outstanding performance that earned him the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Actor. Personally, I thought that Moisés Arias’ (who you might remember as the best part of Five Feet Apart) performance was really great, as well. About the interview with the cast from Jockey We had a link to a panel conversation following the movie, which usually are the cast on a ZOOM link with a moderator asking questions. It was 8pm, so I jumped up to put our kiddos to bed and Rob decided to pop in to check out the conversation (from bed, in his nighty shirt). When I came back 20 minutes later, Rob was nowhere to be found. He did emerge finally from the basement (after I had dealt with 30 minutes of the kids demanding water and snacks and other absurd things). The story goes, that when Rob joined the ZOOM, he was one of 4 other press members and Clifton asked why “this Rob Jarosinski guy wasn’t joining on the video.” Which triggered a frantic search for a hat and a race to the basement to plug in and record. So please enjoy this unique episode with Clifton Collins Jr., Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar! ***************************************************************** Love the Podcast? Leave us a review! The Future of High Street Join Andrew Grant and Darren A. Smith in the eighth episode of Grocery Guru: The Future of High Street. You Can Read the Full Future of High Street Episode Transcript Below: Darren A. Smith: … keeping their staff safe, understanding the rules, blah, blah, blah. You’re right. They’ve done it. Do you say they were cajoled into doing this? Andrew Grant: Who knows. Who knows the discussions I had. I think the important thing is that it’s been done and I guess that’s sort of the breaking news. So it almost links to what I was going to talk about today, which is they’re also having to, as we’ve said in a couple of the previous episodes of this, they’re having to deal with change to their market where 10 years of change has happened in six months. [crosstalk 00:00:00:38]. Darren A. Smith: Yeah, yeah. Andrew Grant: Yeah. And the costs involved in just coping with that must be immense. Darren A. Smith: And what does that mean? I mean, we’ve got the future of the High Street. I’m sure that’s well documented. And particularly we’ve got Debenhams, Arcadia recent. The future of our High Street, I mean, is it all going to be coffee shops and hairdressers? Andrew Grant: Well, it’s interesting. I think, unfortunately, you get the pain before the game. I saw over the weekend, Bill Grimsby, Bill Grimsey, I don’t even remember him, used to run Iceland and then Wix. Seasoned retail professional. Got a lot of time for the guys. A really good operator. I think he interviewed me once but didn’t give me the job. So anyway, not everyone’s perfect. Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week! On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit talks about the power of quitting and letting go.When’s the right time to let go of something? A relationship, a project, an investment?Seasoned investors have this great question for determining whether or not they should hold onto an investment. The question goes a little something like this: “If I wasn’t already invested in this business, would I invest in it today, knowing what I know?” Feel free to replace business with relationship, project, or friendship. The beauty of this question is that it cuts through the rationalization tactics that our mind uses to deal with our fear of loss. Sometimes we’re so scared of losing something, or admitting that it isn’t working, that it’s easier to pretend that it isn’t an issue than it is to deal with it.The challenge with pretending is that it just prolongs the inevitable pain and, more importantly, makes it harder to genuinely turn things around. When’s the right time to let go? Notice if the main reason you are holding onto something is primarily because you’re afraid of losing it, that may be a good sign. For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.
